GWWT:REGION

Official?[edit]

I extracted the portion regarding regions from Guild Wars Wiki:Formatting/Locations (which I wrote anyway), since a region is not a location, and thus deserved a separate formatting guideline article. What I've written is based on what currently exists and I think what currently exists is fine. Are there any problems with the existing pages that would require some redesign? -- ab.er.rant sig 22:19, 14 May 2007 (EDT)

Neighbors[edit]

What is a neighbor? Obviously it includes any adjacent regions you can walk to, but what else does it include? Regions on the same continent linked by boat routes? Regions on different continents? Regions linked by portals? What about regions that are geographically close but don't have any direct travel paths, such as the Maguuma Jungle and the Tarnished Coast? -- Gordon Ecker 22:41, 14 May 2007 (EDT)

Actually, I started it off as meaning "adjacent", "next to", you know, a neighboring region. But it seems to have been interpreted differently and people just seemed to just add whatever that remotely seems like a neighbor. So I'll just leave it up to everyone else. I'm fine with whatever the definition of "neighbor" turns out to be. -- ab.er.rant sig 23:13, 14 May 2007 (EDT)

Loading screens[edit]

Do loading screens have a one to one relationship with regions? If so, should we not include them, perhaps even as a mandatory field? Backsword 17:18, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, each region would appear to have its own loading screen, although some subareas maybe different (can't remember). In either case, like the location and npc infoboxes, the region infobox already includes several pic parameters that can be used for any image, and I think loading screen screenshots will fit in there just fine. -- ab.er.rant sig 17:39, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking it could be a good idea to have in place with the release of EotN coming up, since there are obvious new regions coming up. Also, some standarisation may be valuable, since there is nothing to duplicate: loading screens don't change. Backsword 18:10, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
I don't see how GWEN's release could cause any effect to what's already in place. The simplest thing to standardise is to make sure that all the pic1 would be used for a loading screen image and a pic1-text be used to say "Loading screen". I don't think it's necessary to insert a new parameter called "loadingscreen" just to make sure everyone knows that only loading screens can be uploaded there, because that implies we should also create parameters like "conceptart" and "mapview". -- ab.er.rant sig 04:19, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm sure you're right regarding naming and such. My idea was simply that this would be a good time to get it organised, as presumable, many new region articles will be created soon. (With GW:EN). Backsword 12:54, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm perfectly fine with wanting to standardise things, but I just feel that we can standardise it without needing to change the template. The whole pic1 to pic5 added to a couple of infoboxes were created specifically to deal with images that may or not be uploaded. For example, a new region might have 2 loading screens. If a loadingscreen parameter was used, it would mean that we'd need to change the template again to accomodate. What I'm trying to say is that there's no need for a parameter specifically named for a certain type of image. And because the number regions are actually quite small, it isn't hard to fix things if something does become messy in the near future. -- ab.er.rant sig 14:26, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Soundtrack?[edit]

A very minor idea: what do you guys think about adding a section listing the name of the songs played on each region? Those with any of the soundtrack may use that information to know how to find a song they like, and those without it could use it for learning (if only for the sake of learning) the name of the songs in the game. In other hand, it would be adding one more section just for something amazingly trivial. Erasculio 13:57, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I think it would be really nice. Either a new section entirely, or add it to the notes or trivia sections. - anja talk 14:01, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Since it's something that's actually region specific, it would be a good idea. As it would be a listing, and there is a one to one parity, a new section would be preferable. Backsword 20:40, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Sweet idea! How about throwing it into the infobox? *preparing to duck in case Anja throws a projectile at me for suggesting stuffing up the infobox again* :P -- ab.er.rant sig 02:13, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
*Looks big and bad* ;) Obviously, I would prefer outside the infobox. But, if it gets slimmed down first, I might change my mind :P - anja talk 06:35, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
I actually think outside of the infobox would be better. I think things look really prettier on infoboxes (*_*), but the text for some of the entries would be too big, if we want to add some explanations. For example, on GW:EN, we get songs from the previous games, so I think it would be worth saying "*(Music name) from the Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall Original Soundtrack". I propose a format like:
Landmarks
Soundtrack
*Song 1 from the native chapter
*Song 2 from the native chapter
*Song 1 from a different soundtrack from (Soundtrack Name)
*Song 2 from a different soundtrack from (Soundtrack Name)
Notes
Someone could likely word it better (sometimes I hate having English as secondary language >.>) but I think that shows more or less what I mean. Erasculio 23:59, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Landmarks
Soundtrack
*Song name 1
*Song name 2
*Song name 3 originally from Prophecies <!--if the song was first used in another campaign -->
Notes
Maybe? :) - anja talk 07:26, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
That's great : ) And that's what I think we should implement. The only problem is that sometimes a song comes not from a game, but rather from a specific soundtrack within a game. For example, a song we listen to in Prophecies may come from the Guild Wars Soundtrack (as it wasn't called Prophecies back them), from the Sorrow's Furnace Mini Pack, or from the Battle Pack One (the only Battle Pack). Likewise, a song in Factions may come from the Factions Soundtrack or from the Factions Collector's Edition Soundtrack. Do we want to add this level of details? I think no - I would rather use the model Anja presented above, as I think that anything more complete would be just too confusing to be worth the extra information. Erasculio 15:53, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
I think "originally heard in Prophecies (Sorrow's Furnace)" or "Factions (CE soundtrack)" could work, too. Although I doubt any of the songs that require you to pay extra money is included in other areas (if you do not already own those packs). - anja talk 15:58, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree, that would work : ) Erasculio 02:12, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

(RI) When I proposed it above, for some random reason I suggested the name of the songs to be links. When I was about to add the actual section to some GW:EN regions, though, I noticed it does not really make sense to have the songs linking to an article for each of them. I think it would be better to either don't like them to anything (the option I prefer) or to link all of them to a single page, with some information about the soundtrack being sold by Direct Song in which said song may be found. arena regions[edit]

not sure if this belongs here, but it wasn't getting much traffic in the arena infobox so reposted it here. anyways, backsword and i currently disagree on how to display arena regions. the main example is Rollerbeetle Racing (arena) and its outpost. i contend that they belong in the battle isles b/c their campaign is core. i believe backsword feels they should reside in the region that is brought up on the loading screen. If u press M in-game in the arena, u will see the battle isles. i think we should go w/ whats in game, but i can see why the loading screen information is useful. still, the outpost article looks odd when the campaign is core but the region is the jade sea (and even then the actual graphical content is from shing jea island and not the jade sea). to me that doesn't look right. if we go w/ backsword, we need to change the minigame locations. if we take my side, we need to change many of the random/team arena articles and all the guild hall articles.

i thought about this more and even if we did go w/ my suggestion, the thematic background is important. perhaps it deserves a separate infobox parameter or article section named theme? --VVong|BA 23:06, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

When you are in FoW and press M you'll see the Battle Isles as well, ubut the Region says The Mists. I would prefer to give a lore-like region instead of the in-game location when you press M.. poke | talk 06:34, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
The main map does not display a region but a world, or what we'd call a continent, tho' it should be noted that presearing has it's own world. PvP areas display the PvP world map, which happens to only include one region. Neither of this is dependent on campaign, as can e seen with the BMP quests, or to a lesser extnt Glint's Challenge. Backsword 07:27, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
I'd prefer to go with lore or what it appears to be as well. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 07:24, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
AFAIK all the minigames are correct. Backsword 07:27, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
okay fair enough, we'll go w/ lore. but backsword, the minigame articles for rollerbeetle and dragonball both say battles isles currently. unless i misunderstand u then those need changing. the battle isles nav also needs to be changed. --VVong|BA 14:51, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
