I would like to know if there is ANY possibility to switch back the login screen to some of the "old days" Guild Wars login screens.. u know when there was just "guild wars prophecies" or "factions" out there.. with different grafics and music..

New Security Measures for LogIn[edit]

I sincerely hope that the new "security" measures at logon are effective, but I believe that they will prove to be only partially so. The root problem that they are trying to address still exists -- e-mail addresses were originally used to change passwords on accounts. This was an extremely poor decision to start with, one that has been questioned in the past and one that still remains in force today. It would have been preferable to use something like the original game key (or one of the keys associated with the account) to effect login password changes. This would have been safer for the players instead of using a public/semi-public e-mail address. The present system is flawed and the security is weak. The changes do little to address the real problem and the server side programmers are doing essentially nothing to correct it. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't typical unresponsive A-net behavior (as anyone who has ever dealt with customer service can attest).68.2.241.211 14:06, 22 December 2009 (UTC)SBH

I'm just gobsmacked that they act without thought. My son cannot remember the spelling of his character name and now, just after adding GW to his PC, he can't play.

That’s such a surprising answer I just had to respond.
As it should never have happened in the first place I do expect an immediate resolution. How can anyone in their right mind find it acceptable if a paid for service is shut off without warning, followed by, ‘get in the support line’?
Whoever managed this should never have been allowed the responsibility. I can imagine that many more casual players will find they cannot login, subsequently they will for go the effort involved in contacting support and choose never to play again. They will be lost customers; which is lost revenue and bad advertising. They will be saying, ‘GW2, haha. No chance, they closed my account in GW1’.--Karia 17:12, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry if this comes off "trollish", but really now, does everything done by Anet to protect players have to be a QQ fest? Does anything make any players happy? And I'm sorry, I laughed when the OP said "so and so can't remember how to spell their character name." Actually, that isn't quite true, I /facepalmed first, then laughed. Really? (reset indent) Sorry, but you're agument for "my account was shut off" is incorrect, I think you'll find that this isn't having your account shut off... Ask any number of people who've been banned through some reson or another, those people have had their accounts shut off. You're is inaccesible because you or your son can't remember a character's name on the account. This isn't ANet's fault at all, it is your own. Are we talking about a small child? Because that is the only way I can justify a post like the OP's. And even then, if they are too young to spell a name, maybe they are too young for GW, or the parent should log all info for the account, as they do ask for a character name when you contact Support.--*Yasmin Parvaneh* User yasmin parvaneh sig.png 17:29, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
I do have some sympathy for Karia and i can see his/her point. I know it seems strange to us regular players but there are people who are very casual players of Guild Wars, but i don't think its particularly far fetched to assume that there is a sizeable chunk of players (maybe 10%) that do not play the game regualarly and maybe only have one or two characters. Furthermore there appears to be a lot of people in Guild Wars with character names that reflect these types of players: people who just wanna play a fun game every now and again. These players aren't too bothered about the RPG element of the game so much and just want to wave a sword around or cast some spells for a bit. How many characters in the game have names such as Asdfasdfasdf Asdf? And although these people can be to blame for poor name selection it simply reflects their attitude that they want to casually play the game, but unfortunately a lot of these players are now going to be unintentionally punished for their casual play plans. On another note, does anyone know if there is a way to make the command line codes work with the new security screen so that you don't need to manually type in the name of a character when swapping between two different accounts? The -character command line does not work, so I was hoping that maybe someone else knows a good work around. Thanks! :) --JET 20:01, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

If you have "Remember Account name..." turned on, it will save your login name and character name after first successful login. After that old -password command works just fine. On a different note... If you can't spell or remember any one of your character names then maybe you should start making names that are easier to remember and are possible to spell with out Ctrl+C,Ctrl+V - Everyone will be better off then. Yes, and that works fine for a single account. However, that does not work well for 2 or more accounts, as it only "remembers" the most recently entered character name. When you swap from account #1 to account #2, it tries to plug in the character name from account #1, and then pops up an error message, because the character name from account #1 does not correlate with account #2. You then need to manually enter both the password and character name to gain access to account #2 (even if you have a shortcut that uses the command line codes). My question is whether there is some way around that so that you don't need to manually input this information each time. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 99.154.20.43 (talk).

Sigh[edit]

Did anybody else get completely timed out of whatever they were doing? I was VQing Mirror of Lyss, literally searching for the last remaining group that i must've missed along the way when i get d/ced and cannot reconnect no matter how many times i tried. I didn't receive any of the usual messages about a new build of guild wars being available. Not sure what my point is, suppose i'm just peeved at it, fricking annoying. can I reupload a PNG version from BMP? the blue looks all wrong from the game's compression. yeah, I know, its' minor to some people. Password options[edit]

Gaile provided this information, and considering how many reports of no emails being sent for password resets we've been getting on the Help:Ask an account question page, I felt it was worth posting this information on a permanent page. Whether this is the most appropriate page, or whether we should create a separate Help:Password FAQ page (as was suggested on Gaile's page) is still up for discussion, but I felt it was important enough to not let this information get lost in the maze of Gaile's archives, so I added it here for now. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 08:04, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Referral to support[edit]

People don't see that (proven by the sheer number of covered questions that already appear on the Help pages). That however, really doesn't address this question, should the referral link for contacting support simply be a direct link to the support page, or a link to Gaile's Support FAQ? What I meant was if that page's content was moved into the mainspace, via appending it to the FAQ, or giving it its own help article. We would need to talk to Gaile I suppose. The problem is, she tends to want to maintain control of support information. The reason that all of that has been kept in her userspace to begin with is that ArenaNet would prefer it not to necessarily appear "official", where putting something like that on a permanent help page would give it a much more official appearance. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 13:26, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Trivia[edit]

If anyone cares, I think that at least part of the mountainous terrain in the background of the login screen resembles Yosemite National Park -- specifically the Half Dome mountain peak. Do an internet search for Half Dome and see what you think.
