um...[edit]

"It is not currently known if mantids are insects."

so I'm guessing that both

"These beastly insects have begun to appear with more frequency in the countryside and other areas surrounding Shing Jea Monastery. Mantids form small hives in the caves that dot the area, and are always on the lookout for prey—either to feed themselves, or their queen’s eggs. –The Guild Wars Factions Manuscripts"

and

"is intended to make them feel more like big insects- you stomp on them, but they still get up and crawl around" -Andrew McLeod (Freyas)/ArenaNet creature designer

isn't enough proof. Especially since GW staff themselves say they are insects. or am i missing something? (came back and signed) Kosmic 03:41, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Obviously they are insects to us, but the question is whether they are classed as insects by the game, e.g. if there was an Insect Hunt bounty in EotN, would Mantids count for it? It's a largely meaningless question unless or until something that requires an insect exists in EotN, or Mantids exist anywhere that insects trigger anything... As it stands, we can't say whether they are or are not insects - it's not even like there's any reason the Devs would bother classing them as such since insects are irrelevant to EotN anyway :) -- Splodge of Cat 17:03, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
On the other hand, an insect affiliation/army/w.e. already exists and unless they did a wildlife category (which they seemed to have cut with Factions, excluding elite areas) then they would have to put the mantids into one of them and since said grouping would of existed since Factions (if not Prophecies), there is one question: Why not put it as an insect. -- Konig/talk 02:23, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Bug?[edit]

When I try to attack a mantid, it won't let me. In fact, when I used ctrl+space bar, it said I was following it, not attacking. I have to use a skill. They have red name plates still. I do not have "double-click to attack/interact" on. What's going on? Why is this? Is this a bug? Btw, it was on my monk. Eryops3

Did you have a weapon equipped? Or were you carrying any items? (And it's easier to sign with four ~'s) Freedom Bound 17:19, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Ha I just noticed I didn't have a weapon equipped XD nvm -Eryops3

are inscects[edit]

I know relating a game to real world logic is partially stupid, but just hear me out: from what i've seen, mantids have 3 pairs of limbs and have 3 somewhat-segmented bodyparts, much like insects in real life. so i guess you could classify them as insects --Eclipse143 07:43, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Painweavers and Lifeweavers are Arachnids despite only having 4 legs. In mechanics, Mantids may or may not be the same as insect - there's sadly no way to properly test it. Konig/talk 08:01, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Die, dammit![edit]

These creatures would be perfect pets for minion factories. I got 8 or 9 new minions from one single Mantid Queen that just... would... not... die! 76.164.65.219 21:49, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Merge with "insect"[edit]

I'm against this, the creature type (aka the fact that these are classed as insects) does not make any difference in terms of game mechanics and they have their own trophies. Also the insect article would get pretty big with this list added to it. Imo the note saying they are insects is enough. Jeree95 (talk) 16:55, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

I completely forgot that trophies are a thing. G R E E N E R 17:50, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
I had asked Joe about the Mantids. He said they creature type files classified them as insects. --Falconeye (talk) 19:00, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, but the note said that already. There was no need to merge imo. Game code classifying them as insects is an interesting piece of trivia but not really relevant in terms of mechanics. If it was relevant it would've come up sooner than this anyway. But whatever, what's done is done. Next time, if you plan to just merge pages without discussion you might aswell not even stamp them with the merge tag in the first place. Jeree95 (talk) 14:13, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
Nothing is set in stone. I haven't played GW1 in ages, so as a contributor I'm very out of touch with the mechanics or information that would be useful for the typical reader. There does need to be a balance between reflecting the game and providing meaningful information to others, and those can be competing/conflicting stances.
Had a busy few days, sorry if I'm late getting back to this. G R E E N E R 05:20, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
