From Ursan Talk Page

Repost:

How is this ruining the economy? It's a honest question, so before you GOENGINE GOREDENGINE GORED explain what shattering effect this has had. Ecto prices are within 10-12% variance from 1 year ago, feathers are the biggest mover I've seen, but that's probably a spike in demand for Silver Eagle Armor. Black dye has gone up in price in the last 3 months, and white aswell.
I'm not picking a side here, I'd just like to know where people having fun on their own, instead of with PuGs which are notoriously bad, is bad for the game? Ghosst I Make Dead PeopleTalk • 05:45, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
"Ecto prices are within 10-12% variance from 1 year ago" Uhh....3.5k down from 5k is not 10-12%. That isn't fully Ursan though, that's another topic. An aspect of economy ursan (and EotN to a lesser extent) did ruin was items on the player-made economy. (Voltaic Spears, DoA items, etc.)
And in response to your other question, grinding isn't fun. Nor was it meant to be the core of Guild Wars. The most unfun aspect of this (and any other game) has been taken and glorified into the "standard." This standard has, in turn, created a stark sense of elitism: It's either you spend the time to grind out the title(s) or you are left in the dust. Prior to Ursan, even though you were expected to have certain skills and not necessarily ground titles (possible exception: DoA), the difference between Ursan and the pre-made builds is that there was usually more risk involved. If you are new or unfamiliar with the bar, chances are you would suck. However you would slowly start to learn from your errors, knowing when you should use a certain skill, where you should locate yourself, etc. Case in point, Ursan is a pick-up-and-go skill without the drawbacks. That is why it has seen so much use, and, in turn, that is why the player-made economy has been impacted.
On a side note, the rise of Black and White Dye Prices doesn't necessarily mean good. Infact, it's a sure sign that people are starting to get too much money. Let's do a quick logic exercise.
Question: Why are the dye prices going up?
  • Answer: because more consumers are starting to buy. There is a higher-demand, but the income of dye remains virtually the same (thankfully). Higher demand with stagnant supply means higher costs.
Question: Why are there more consumers buying the dyes?
  • Answer: Because, previously, a noticeably lesser amount of consumers (than today) were the only ones willing to buy the dye due to fears of money-spent versus aesthetics. However, this new wave of consumers have more money.
Question: Why do these consumers have more money?
  • Answer: Simple, it's easier to get money than previously.--Ezekial Riddle 06:59, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Higher Feather prices are from people buying Essence of Celerity. — Teh Uber Pwnzer 07:23, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, I wasn't sure about the feathers, I haven't really gone too far into EotN yet. The armor was a guess as beyond that I hadn't seen too much use for them other than for my necro max armor.
As far the other points brought by Ezekial, the 10-12% I quoted was from watching Ectos go from about 5000 (to buy) to 4500, which isn't much of change. You may be referring to selling them to other players, which is seperate. I rarely buy anything from a player that I can't go buy from a vendor myself. I do however recall white dye at one point being 37p per bottle but I can't recall where I saw a screenie of that (it was years ago). I understand how and why the prices move up and down, but I just don't see that they are wildly out of place.
I also don't see that titles are that terribly important. While I am interested in maxing KoaBD if I see someone displaying, for example, Legendary Cartographer, I don't get upset, I just think, "wow, that must have been a lot of work". In fact, I was chatting with a player who just received Legendary Survivor two days ago and I was complementing him on the work involved. It had nothing to do with the skills he equipped either, it was just respect for having done the work. Keeping that in mind, that does not mean to me that your displaying Sunspear Commander means you are a bad player or not worth answering a question to. Heck, you could very well be on a new or unused character and have far more experience than most people out there.
Finally, the rare items in NF are nice, but to be honest, it's a shield, or a spear, or a sword. I grabbed mine from the BMP and I'm quite happy with them, although I may switch to a Mursaat shield soon. It doesn't force anyone to go work at the BMP though, that's a personal choice. I picked the Tribal Shield (effigy) for my paragon over my Shield of the Forgotten because it's the look I wanted. People can party with me regardless of their choice in weapons.
Ghosst I Make Dead PeopleTalk • 13:31, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
People like you, Ghosst, are awesome. If there were more of you in the game, perhaps I could be happier. Unfortunately, there aren't very many people like you, and as such I have to make my arguement based on the majority.
The whole Ecto debate is, in essence, meaningless due to constant variation. I will say this: a year ago, they were going for anywhere between 4.6k to 5k. Recently (within a few weeks ago) I've seen prices around 3.5k. Something has happened within that time frame, and most notable things are the SF buff and Ursan. I won't make this page into an Ecto economy/SF/Ursan debate at once, so let's drop the Ecto debate. If you want, you can have the last say, I won't care.
Titles: It's annoying to be kicked from a group because your "Ursan Rank" -- as it is sadly called -- isn't high enough. Titles like Legendary Cartographer and KoaBD don't have any effect on how you play, but the EotN faction titles do. PvE'ers like "pure power", and as such whoever has the higher title wins. That is the sense of elitism I was talking about.
And, lastly, your point about aesthetics is why I think you're a cool person. You are okay without the most expesnive items, but, as I said earlier, the majority likes getting the most expensive equipment. To them, it's prestige. That is why two items with the same exact stats can have a very dramatic difference in pricing. However, to get back to my original point the last post is that the items in the player made economy have taken a dramatic hit. It's not good for any economy to have such a decrease in prices.
We should continue this chat in the talk-page so this page doesn't get so cluttered --Ezekial Riddle 05:05, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I just don't see the point of all these people getting so angry and yelling at ArenaNet, cursing and swearing because they made the game easier to play. I completely agree that the consumables are way too overpowered. I received a Powerstone of Courage during a quest in EotN and I've been saving it since. Saving it because that is such a powerful little tool for hardmode missions like the Gate of Madness mission. It does what would have taken us 4 candy canes and a sweet-tooth item, things we used to only get from holiday events.

But the number of people crying about Ursan just amazes me. I have the skill, and I do use it sometimes when I want things killed quickly. But I wipe using Ursan regularly too. I also try to keep the rest of skill bar filled with useful things because I don't want to use it constantly. Now if other people play with nothing but Ursan, 24/7, it really doesn't change anything. Sure those tormented weapons might be forged easier with Ursan, but not everyone wants to join an 8-person group to get them.

I do, for the record, understand that more people having them makes them less presteige, but really, some people need to take a step back and remember that in the end, it's a game. A damned fun, entertaining, mind-warping, obsessive-compulsive game, but a game none-the-less. Telling Arenanet staff (and I don't mean you, I mean the attitude on this wiki) that they suck, and are stupid, is uncalled for. The worst part is the admins here either join in and say the same things, or they silently support the biggest mouths on the wiki.

Over what? A skill that you are not forced to use, but one that lets a casual gamer have a little more fun. Ghosst I Make Dead PeopleTalk • 13:17, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

A lot of this is an argument of personal opinion. However, "a skill that you are not forced to use" really only applies if you have a good set of friends or a good guild. If you are trying to PuG a mission or elite area, chances are that going Ursanway is the quickest way to go. That is the issue in several people's minds: Ursan is too good of a last resort option. If a team tries a balanced but screws that up, they can always go Ursan. If a team is afraid of a wipe, Ursan is your buddy. If a team wants to do a speed clear, Ursan shines. If you want to PuG a balanced group or something else, too bad. A lot of their arguments are centered around "Ursan doesn't encourage anyone to learn from their mistakes and not bring Frenzy Healsig." If a team does wipe, it was most likely due to over-aggro, in which case the player only learns to not over-aggro, which is just the fundamental lesson of PvE. (Personal feelings start to ensue) That is all they learn, just the basic fundamental lesson of this game.
The other day, I am proud to admit, I learned something. I was doing the Darkrime Delves Dungeon. I thought, "I should bring an MM for the amount of spare targets. Jotun's are fleshy, therefore I should have plenty of bodies for minions." However, I soon learned that Jotun's take a bit of effort to kill, and they annhilate the minions. After suffering from a few wipes, I switched my necro hero from MM to SS, and I breezed through the dungeon. My lesson? MM's don't work as for every area with fleshy creatures.
I guess Ursan wouldn't be as bad if there wasn't a sense of elitism and grind shrouding it. It's either you take the time to get to "Slayer of All," roll a PvE HB monk, or get kicked. The only reasons I suspect that ANet hasn't touched this skill is
  1. The grind associated with it. After spending loads of hours grinding up your title track for one specific skill, it gets nerfed. This would raise a lot of hell.
  2. It is a PvE skill, and as such it should be more powerful than other skills.
  3. <Insert "ANet getting rich off EotN sales" conspiracy theory here>
I want to think it is the first reason. Perhaps that is why, in the July 10th dev update, ANet said, (I paraphrase) "We will be looking at how to change the grind associated with PvE skills." Perhaps if the grind wasn't so daunting, this skill could have been balanced a long time ago. --Ezekial Riddle 21:53, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
While I do agree with what you're saying, you do have to keep in mind that PuGs are just horrid. I do my best to steer clear of them unless I see someone asking for help and not getting it. In thast case, I'll party with them, provided I have the time, and help them out, or if I don't, at least offer some pointers. I noticed that a lot in the hardest mission of the game, the Gate of Madness where people couldn't figure out why they couldn't make it. They laughed when I said "Take 4 hours if you have to, but go slow!". They thought it was outrageous to go slow but had been stuck there for months. It was a basic lesson in pulling and aggro they obviously hadn't learned. All the Ursan in the world won't get you through that mission if you're an idiot about it.
As far as an Ursan nerf, it's too late and now the skill will be pummelled into uselessness like the entire Assassin profession has been outside of Shadow Form which will again be next on the chopping block. It's just sad these people who can't cope with new builds are running the game into the ground and it really pisses me off (pardon my language).
Good guilds are hard to come by, I agree. I was lucky to join a friend's guild and now have started our own alliance. It was through his guidance, and working my way up from Prophecies, that made me a better player. Now I can show people tricks to stay alive, and I can still find good players who can show me a thing or two. But for the most part, I stay away from PuGs, Ursan or not.
Ghosst I Make Dead PeopleTalk • 22:07, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
ANet wouldn't (or shouldn't) completely destroy Ursan in one sweep. Too many people are dependent upon it; nerfing ursan would cause a major uproar. At this point, they should slowly start to chip away Ursan's power month by month, so people would slowly be weaned off Ursan.
Shadow Form, however, is a different story. They've tried to balance that, and so I wouldn't be surprised if the hammer pulverized this one. If anything, they should just have the skill be disabled for 60 seconds, and then perhaps buff Deadly Paradox and a few others to compensate.
Gate of Madness being the hardest mission is debatable. While I was stuck on that one for awhile, I was able to eventually h/h it for Masters. For me, Gate of Pain was the hardest. With a PuG, I got standard reward. --Ezekial Riddle 00:32, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

There is no need for - or point in - a Philosophical Discussion

First of all, I don't mind - or rather care - being called a fanboy (which you, technically, didn't do, because I don't know if I'll buy the storage tabs, I'll continue "as if" nonetheless, for future reference). I've been called so on different occasions, by different people, and I am, to be so frank, tired of denying the charge. These discussions don't have a bearing on who I am in the larger - and more important - part of my life. They hardly have a bearing on my position in these discussions themselves. Fun fact, nonetheless: I've been playing computer games for quite some years, maybe hundreds of them, and Guild Wars is - by far - the one that fascinates me the most. So, in a way, if I ever played a game I would have deemed worthy to be a fanboy of, it'd be Guild Wars, because no matter how much or how often I may reminisce about the glorious days of old, about the classics and how such games aren't being sold anymore, I have spent more time in Guild Wars, than in any three of the greatest classics - or runner-ups on my list - added together. So yeah, call me a fanboy all you like, it doesn't make me dumb, it doesn't make my points invalid, and it doesn't make the game a bad one. It just explains, if you require such explanation, why I may be inclined to take up the position of the advocatus diaboli on controversial topics, and defend ANet and Guild Wars in spite of knowing that the odds are against me - facing off, as a no-name, against a very vocal and very (I'd sometimes like to say over-)critical community of established and prominent wikieans.

So, why is there no point in a philosophical discussion? First, because we talk about different types of philosophy. I talk about the philosophical nature of "rewards" or "values" like entertainment or convenience and that there are few differences between paying to get something to kill time without having to do anything useful (paying for entertainment) and paying money to not have to do something at all (paying for convenience). You talked about personal philosophies or mottos. And even that, in the end, doesn't matter. My question was, if someone is less of a thinking person just because of buying the storage tabs. You said, according to your philosophy, such a person is a fanboy (which I will roughly translate into "yes" for the sake of an argument) and I can't do anything but accept your conviction. To you, with your priorities, it is unimaginable that someone can make the decision, based on arguments and reasons, to buy these things, and be happy (while maintaining common sense) with that decision. I can't do anything about that, and, frankly, I don't mind that you think so.

I'll even agree with your conviction that if someone wants to buy the most storage for the least price, the storage tabs are the worst possible way. I'll even go as far as admitting my great disappointment when visiting the content update preview page, seeing the rather low length of it, and the high price for the Storage Tab upgrades. Then I shrugged and had another look at the good things: The Menagerie (which I will surely like), the Zaishen Challenge Quests (which have a certain idea behind them, which was requested by some parts of the community and which I couldn't care less about, but which will solve one of my problems with the game in a completely different way) and the Equipment Packs (which will solve most of my storage problems for free anyways). Plus we finally get HoM account-wide (which I will most probably like) and maybe some surprises they have kept for now (yes, I'm that naive and full of hope, I know). Some people will stupidly buy the Storage and then complain about it, others will - for whatever reasons - buy them as well and be happy with it, some people stupidly won't buy them, and complain about it, and some people will - for different reasons - not buy them (but something else or nothing at all) and be happy with that decision. To me, people who have reasons for their decision, and act accordingly, and then are, in the end, as happy as they can be with the outcome, are those who made the "smart" decision after all (at least, and especially, if we're talking about a context of strict entertainment and/or convenience purposes) ... no matter what reasons they had, or how they decided. So... okay, maybe, this ends on a slightly philosophical note after all, even if it is just "my philosophy" to answer "yours".

To bring this to an end - I'm rather verbose, I know, sorry for that - I have enjoyed your list as a more neutral and reasonably critical contribution to the discussion than most, and I thank you for honoring my... slight tempting you... with a rather polite answer and inviting me over here for discussion. I likely will continue to read around here (have done so for quite a while) but won't find the time to answer over the next few months, and even if, my IP changes daily, and I don't like giving out carte blanche to anyone who happens to be in a position to assume my identity (as little as there is of it on the grounds of being identified by IP), so I guess noone will ever really *know* if it's me writing another answer on this (Ha! Look at me, trying to keep a non-existant "name" a good one!). Not very elegant a solution, I know, but yeah, I just love the immunity anonymity provides... (well, in fact, I'm just easily addicted. Having a name and an account to take care of would have me occupied with wiki business just like many other addicts. Can't afford that now, so I'm not buying in.) No matter what "lame excuse" or "good reason" you choose to believe, it's been fun, thanks again, and continue having fun around here and in game. Let's hope the update will be better than expected after all. - 84.178.116.148 00:24, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

You're very welcome for the invitation. Anyhow, to expand on my beliefs/philosophy/reasoning: What I was saying was that for the little bit more convenience you would get from purchasing the storage upgrade versus character slots (The most convenient storage option outside of the Upgrade) is really not worth paying double. Switching characters isn't that hard, and due to how Guild Wars works—when you login to a character, you always load in a town that has a storage vault, which all your characters can access—it's only a little less time saving than just putting your stuff into an expanded storage.
I posited that ArenaNet can't sell this upgrade to thinking people. I did not necessarily mean stupid people, just people who are uninformed or chronically ignorant (Happens to me all the time). If you're buying the upgrade because you want the storage and/or you want to support ArenaNet, you are being very fanboy-ish (In this context, stupid). If you buy it because you didn't do the math or did not see ArenaNet's flaw in marketing, you are just being ignorant. It'll be a choice you will regret later, but slips of the mind happen to the best.
I am looking forward to the content update. I wasn't aiming to discard the entire update by saying that the storage upgrade sucks, therefore the whole thing sucks. This update will probably get me more active in Guild Wars again. Anyway, have fun out there. --TalkRiddle 03:13, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey

""I don't think ArenaNet will disclose the length (if there is a defined length) of a permanent ban. I think the reasons for this should be obvious, but if you're curious, hit me up on my talk page.""

I'm curious to why you think they would not. The only reason I can think of is because people who use accounts to only sell items for real life currency would be able to access them again, like those asian farmhouses (you know what I mean by that?). But I think the individuals who solely bot to get richer in-game should be given another chance after a perma-ban of 6 months - 3 years, maybe they have grown some brains and see that playing fair is fair, I hope you understand what i'm trying to say. "The only reason I can think of is because people who use accounts to only sell items for real life currency would be able to access them again"
Well, any account. The permaban is supposed to represent "You broke the rules too much/made us too angry/whatever, so please don't ever come back." I believe it's detailed in the EULA that if you're permabanned and you get a different account, if they find you playing that account, they'll ban it too. --TalkRiddle 18:50, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
I think you mean this part right?
"(i) Related Accounts. If NC Interactive terminates an Account, NC Interactive may terminate any other Accounts that share the same member name, phone number, email address, postal address, Internet Protocol address, or credit card number with the terminated Account."
I think they mean when they terminate an account, any account currently active that "share the same member name, phone number, email address, postal address, Internet Protocol address, or credit card number with the terminated Account" can also be terminated, but i'm not sure if they will terminate a new account wich hasn't been flagged yet, maybe i'll ask Gaile in the future. Errr....

may I ask why you moved so much of the responses to Auron's message to Auron's talk page? Although the stuff that was just basic trolling really doesn't have a place on the wiki (which to be honest could include Auron's original post), alot of the responses you moved we're not trolling and we're in fact responding to Auron in a constructive manner, like the messages from Kokouo. I will wait for your response before moving the text back. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 11:46, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

All that needs to stay on Linsey's page is my post and relevant replies, not people bitching at me. I don't pester devs with random bullshit. I'm not Shard, Adrin, or even Lena. I only post when there is an issue that needs to be addressed (or at least, an issue that ANet *probably* doesn't know about and really should). I'm not even expecting a response. My goal was to let Linsey know that there are serious lag issues. I achieved my goal in a single post. My intent was not to start a flame war, against her or me or anyone - thus, I am actually perfectly happy with the bulk of that discussion being moved to my talk. I only found this section because I was going to thank Riddle for moving it. -Auron 13:20, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Edit: moving any of the irrelevant discussion back would be counter-productive. Just leave it where it is, please. -Auron 13:21, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Actually the stuff that was moved contained alot of stuff which was generally applicable. Such as people informing you that a whole host of things could be the problem, the fact that you don't like the responses doesn't mean they should be moved, you can not just classify it as "bitching". I'm not gonna touch it this time but if it happens again I will be moving back all relevant discussion without warning. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 17:33, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
I moved, along with the trolling, what I felt was people posting specifically to debase Auron's claim of mass server lag rather than trying to find a solution for it. I wasn't trying achieve a message of "mass censorship," but since it had gone so far off-topic, and it was to the point where ilr said that "the Sysops, they should all be ashamed for letting this fight go when they obviously have the power to break parts of it up and move it to the respectable pages of those involved," and since the duties of maintaining the wiki aren't reserved for sysops or bcrats alone, I did what I did.
For the record, I've been getting lag spikes at most every 5 minutes, so I will admit that I was and still am partial to the subject. --TalkRiddle 18:50, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Thats fine riddle but posts where people explained the many points it could be happening, does not count as trolling, it counts as discussion and that's allowed. Censorship is not part of this wiki and nor should it become so. I'm not saying that's what you did, but editing out all the statements opposing Aurons is not the way to give a rounded picture to anet of anything. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 19:01, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
So, Salome, you propose to only move back those comments which you find relevant to the discussion, never mind the fact that most of them have interlaced content and contexts with the "bitching" such that they would not really make sense by themselves? Vili 点 User talk:Vili 01:32, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
No Vili, that's not what I meant (or even close to what I said). Any post that had pertinent points, I was going to move back, regardless of what bitching it contained, however posts which just went "Auron I think you're a dick...whine whine whine" I was going to leave on Auron's page. If it was on topic then it up to linsey to say she doesn't want it there, not us. We take a limited archiving role in her page, but actually chopping and changing the posts to reflect one persons sentiments and quell others seems to be going too far IMHO. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 01:51, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
The original post was a message to Linsey. All other posts that weren't an addition to the original topic should be removed. It's pretty simple, really. -Auron 00:24, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
Yes that all pertinent comments should have been left where they were. When reading the comments most of them we're on topic, they just contained alot of bitching as well. Containing bitching however is not enough to get ones comments moved. Actually we very rarely move the off-topic comments contained within a wall of text either. Either way it seems that this conversation is going in circles. So in closing all I'm saying is that if I see pertinent posts moved like that again, I will consider it to be vandalism and will be moving the comments back. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 11:34, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Signature

When did you get a new signature? -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 10:29, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Just changed it yesterday. --User Ezekial Riddle bigsig.pngRiddle 17:37, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
I liked the red better. — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 17:40, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
I wanted to do Gold outlined with Black, but that would've required breaking sig image dimensions. Perhaps the only way I'll change it so that it alternates gold and black, but I don't know how to do that without a ridiculously huge markup. --User Ezekial Riddle bigsig.pngRiddle 17:48, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, I like it. I like the black & gold better than the red. -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 01:21, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
There isn't an HTML tag that outlines text? User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 18:23, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Not that I know of, and I really don't feel like trying to google the answer ATM. --User Ezekial Riddle bigsig.pngRiddle 01:03, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
You could also probably "shadow" your text for more-or-less the same effect, if you wanted too. Or you could also edit your signature in like paint or something, and then just make an outline that way, then have your signature as the uploaded images? -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 02:40, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
GWW:SIGN#Images + GWWT:SIGN#Proposal_.28Signature_Image_Size.29. --User Ezekial Riddle bigsig.pngRiddle 02:46, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, it doesn't say that you're not allowed more than one image, so you could use lots of different little tiny images? =P -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 03:16, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

For your liking? At least you would have the outlining that you wanted. Heh. -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 06:40, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
