I have a problem. On *this* particular Internet connection - only on this one, it works if I'm connected anywhere else - I can not access any e-mail sites. No Yahoo!, no Gmail, no Hotmail (sucks btw), whatever. It doesn't matter what browser I use. I also cannot access IRC, no matter what client I use. Ventrilo and TeamSpeak (sucks btw) won't work, either. Finally, I can't even connect to my favorite MUD (text-based game). None of the relevant sites/IPs are down; I can ping them just fine and if I use any other computer, I can get to those places. All of the programs are "trusted/allowed" through the firewall, they're not triggering antivirus or spyware alerts, etc. On the surface every indicator says they ought to be working fine.

As you can see from me posting this, other sites and services are working normally. I can use the wikis, I can get on Guild Wars, and so on. It is just any sort of communications-related service which seems to be impeded.

At first I thought this was a problem with ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite (sucks btw) and BitTorrent (sucks btw), because those programs are known to not get along and cause all sorts of weird problems. In fact, cases just like mine are extensively documented. The fix was to remove one or both of the programs. I did that; I'm using a different firewall etc. now, and don't have any torrenting software installed. The problem seemed to be fixed, but at the time I was at another location using another Internet connection.

So now when I'm back home, it's still broken, and I have no clue why or what to try next. Microsoft Support has been less than helpful. I mean, even ANet is better.

I'm pretty stumped, and so is my dad, who is an IT professional. We're going to attack the router itself next, but that seems rather drastic, and we know it's a shot in the dark without any idea of what else to do.

Any ideas, anyone? >:(

Well, to start with, flush your windows partition and go Linux. Deluge is new your torrent client, you don't need anti-malware, and I would assume there's voice conferencing software out there somewhere. I hate talking to people, so I hardly need it. I recommend Ubuntu for the new user, but Debian is better overall and it doesn't take that much to do it, just the getting used to it. Assuming you don't want to adapt to a new OS, however (and the pain of using a virtual machine to run GW), read on.

ZoneAlarm is known for pulling this kind of bullshit. It did it to me, once, and if I recall correctly, it's more than a matter of just uninstalling it, unfortunately. Google "zone alarm removal" or some shit like that. The first thing I think you should do is try a few other formats. You can obviously access http:// just fine, try an ftp:// server and download shit. Keep spiraling further from http:// until you find what you can't connect with. If the only thing you can connect with is http://, then it's probably some malware bullshit. Download every anti-malware suite you can find, and by that, I mean Spybot:S&D, pretty much. You could try some others -- AdAware is pretty popular, and the guys who make it are on the level from what I hear, but don't take my word for it because I don't really know -- but chances are you'll find what's wrong with spybot. It's good. If you don't, try re-installing some drivers. Any of them will do, it's really not important which ones. I would say start with the ethernet one or whatever, but you really can't go wrong updating drivers (on a serious note that is BAD ADVICE DO NOT TAKE IT, only do the ethernet one). Mkae sure to set a restore point so you can roll back if all of a sudden none of your interbutz work.

If you're using a LinkSys router, don't. They suck. But if you don't want to get a new one, just unplug it, leave it for about 5 minutes, then come back and plug it back in. They do this kind of crap sometimes because they're shoddily made and shoddily maintained. Like windoz. Anyway, I'd bet money this is a shitware problem. Some crappy program is preventing you from accessing stuff. If worst comes to worst (and obviously you should talk to people other than me, I am by no means a computer expert; I haven't even taken computer science 3, hurr hurr), just back up your shit and restore. NOD32 is probably the best anti-malware client for the average user, but in my opinion it's useless since you have to pay for it. Instead, go with avast (andbe sure to turn off those annoying vocal updates...), it should keep you safe. I also have a list of recommended firefox addons that will keep your shit tighter than a scrawny white boy in Riker's Island, if you want it. —Jette 02:13, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

This is my only working computer (well, laptop), and I sort of need it every day so I'm not going to change OS on the fly...I've heard uTorrent is the better torrent client, but I dunno. Can you access a vent server with Skype etc? o.O

I don't know any ftp:// etc servers that I'd connect to.

Restore points don't work on this machine and never have, because it's Vista and restore points no longer restore your system, hurr hurr. Well, they might work in Safe Mode.

I'm using a NetGear router, but I am connected through a LinkSys switch (splitter thing). Don't really have a choice of that, unless I want to pay for new hardware myself, and I'm sort of broke.

Avast is terrible from all accounts I've heard. Maybe it's okay just for malware, though.

I use Internet Exporer 8 because I'm bad, but if I ever do use FireFox someday that list might be useful. The only things I know for sure to get are noscript and ABP. Anyway, I'm scanning my system now. Vili 点 02:42, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
