Talk:List of Charr bosses

From Guild Wars Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

The reason I am making this list is so that people have someplace to look up charr bosses. Not everyone knows about the category pages. It is my intention to adjust this from a basic list to be more of a searchable table, identifying which campaign and/or general area each boss is specifically located in.42 - talk 17:57, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Template:Charr boss nav was made just few days earlier :P - J.P.User J.P. sigicon.pngTalk 18:02, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I don't see any reason for this page. This list is just a repeat of Category:Charr bosses If you need something linked on a page, use the category link. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 18:05, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
And might I suggest that you work on it under your userspace before putting it on the mainspace? Because as it stands, it is functionally identical to Category:Charr_bosses. de Kooning 18:08, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Also, for consistency, if you are going to do Charr bosses, you need to do identical pages for all the different boss types... by profession, by attribute, by species, by campaign.. etc. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 18:11, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
It is my intention, as soon as I find out how, to add more to this plain list. I thought it would be easier to have a starting point to work from. And as I said, the people who work on the wiki know about the category pages. The large portion of the people who make use of this wiki are looking for a quick information access. They are not going to take the time to sift through all the subsections to try to find something they think is simple. Besides which, someone having the information being repeated in their own user space is also not cool, or so I thought. Since that information is supposed to be for the improvement of the whole site.42 - talk 18:12, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I am willing to take on that project for all of the boss lists, if it is wanted.42 - talk 18:13, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
(Addition to previous post) JP, that was me that did that, and I am trying to figure out those damn tables, so I can have nested nice looking nav template for that, smaller text, subsections for prophecies, etc. I also saw someone comment about making it hideable as well. I would like to add that since the existing nav table I made was so huge.42 - talk 18:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
As I said, many of the users will not want to sift through and do not know about the category pages. But I will temporarily move this to my user page so this work doesn't get wasted.42 - talk 18:21, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
You said people don't know about category pages; however your list requires that people find those lists. So instead of linking to the list from somewhere, simply link to categories. There is a reason the category structure is automated in MediaWiki. And having additional manually maintained lists + the need to actually link them from everywhere (categories are accessible from every page that is in that category), is just stupid. poke | talk 18:25, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Ok, you wanted a place to start... User:Wynthyst/Sandbox/bosses Has the basics for you, but you get to do all the rest of the research. If you are serious about wanting to take this on as a project. As for the benefits of having a mainspace page, it will show up easily using the Search, the categories don't unless you use the advanced search option. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 18:33, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) This page gives the user a place to select the charr boss by name (as the category page does), that opens the wiki page for that particular boss without knowing how the category section works, or where to look to find that particular section. Besides which, to me at least, the plain category page doesn't cover enough information. Too bare-bones for me. If I knew of a way to automate the updates, believe me I would make further use of them. I would love for there to be a way to have an already built table that when that page is viewed, it automatically populates the information from all available sources from within the wiki. Something that would, for example, add entries to a sortable table as they are needed. Something that would have, in this example, charr boss name, profession, level (with hard mode info as well), campaign, and map area location. If anyone knows if there is already a way to do this, please let me know. I want to learn the ins and outs of this system so I can help improve it.42 - talk 18:38, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

K, thanks for the starting point Wyn.42 - talk 18:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

New and improved[edit]

Finally got done with the new and improved look of the table. The existing page is still on my user space, because there will be more tables like this I am going to do, and having to go through and look through the same exact information again would be stupid, especially when I already have that part of it done. I am going to add to the category lists of bosses as I complete the lists for each type. Wyn had also suggested adding the unique drops to the table, more than likely that will be added from the beginning to the next table, but for now this one will work as is. If someone else wanted to add the unique column to this one, I wouldn't oppose it. 42 - talk 23:48, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I would put 2 next to campaign and 3 next to elite skill. - J.P.User J.P. sigicon.pngTalk 00:01, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
Added the unique drop column to the page. Figured someone else could make the effort to populate it with boss specific information. Also wondering why it is that someone doesn't need to know that an elite skill can only be captured from a specific boss while in hard mode. That sounds like important information someone would want to know. Someone already removed the 3 tag JP, and I thought of that as well. My first go through, I had the 1 tag at the location or locations, but moved it because it tells the info at the name just as well. Some of them would also have more than one occurrence of the note. 42 - talk 01:19, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
I removed that note. Show me a single boss(not necessary a charr) that has an elite skill in HM only. If you can prove it that you can capture an elite from that charr boss in Great Northern Wall mission I will revert the change.--SharkinuUser Sharkinu sig.png 08:26, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
That information was from the Charr boss' page, I did not do the research other than looking up the information on the pages themselves. If I remember properly, the Charr boss page showed that that particular boss had the elite skill only in hard mode. That was why the footnote was put there, and in that way. 42 - talk 23:33, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Proposed addition[edit]

I propose adding an additional column to this table.

Currently, the columns are:

 • Boss Name
 • Profession(s) Icon
 • Profession(s) Title
 • Campaign
 • Map Location
 • Elite Skill (if any)
 • Unique Drop (if any)

The change I propose is to add a species column here:

 • Boss Name
 • Profession(s) Icon
 • Profession(s) Title
 • Species
 • Campaign
 • Map Location
 • Elite Skill (if any)
 • Unique Drop (if any)

The reason I would like this addition is to have all of the boss tables I am working on having the same format across the board. On the profession tables, obviously, it would be the same for all entries, and the species tables, the same. The reason is to keep the formatting the same design on all of the boss tables I am working on. It makes a lot more work to have the two seperate styles of tables for each "side" (one design for profession, and a different one for species). It also creates a standard look to all of the tables for any of the users. If they are looking at the table for a profession, then switch over to one by species, they would have the same exact layout. 42 - talk 19:19, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Normally we try to eliminate any unnecessary columns on tables. If the entry is going to be the same on the entire table, it shouldn't be there. I do understand your reasoning, I just don't agree with it. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 19:24, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Been going over the boss pages I have been working on Wyn, and making two seperate table styles at this point would just be too much work. I am going to basically copy the information from the completed prof boss lists, and cut them down by species, that way the info and the work is done once.
If someone else wants to remove the columns after they are moved to the main space, that is up to them. 42 - talk 21:22, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Rough DPL solution[edit]

{{ #dpl:
| category = Demon bosses
| notcategory = Historical content
| uses = Template:NPC infobox
| allowcachedresults = true
| secseparators = \n|
| include = {NPC infobox}:profession,{NPC infobox}:campaign,#Location,#Skills,#Items Dropped
| table = class=sortable, Name<br>, Profession<br>,Campaign<br>,Map Location(s)<br>, Skills<br>, Item Drops<br>
}}

Advantage of staying updated with the source pages and not having to ferret out all the details.

Disadvantages of being reliant on the source page consistency. Also I was having trouble getting the post processing on the DPL output, so I couldn't figure out how to link the campaign or render the professions as icon/links, although it's clearly possible to at least link the campaigns as demonstrated by the skill table templates.

Obviously would work well with infobox captured data. can work with page level info as is demonstrated. 216.30.171.130 23:13, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
