[edit] Speaking of Wyndows7..

Is it any good? From what I hear, it's loads better than Vista, though I'd like to hear the opinion of a learned person before making a decision. I'm using XP currently, and if you have time, I'd like to know the benefits (if there are any) and the drawbacks (there will be many) of upgrading to 7, or even if it can be called as such?

Yes, I did make a very bad pun. NuVII 16:39, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

I had the beta for awhile, and I loved it even then (I hate Vista with a passion btw). I've heard nothing but good things about Win7, and when I can afford to put together a new box, it's going to be running it. -- Wyn talk 16:53, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
There are no starting problemms (childhood illness if we call it in Holland ^^) like Vista had in its starting period? -- Cyan 16:57, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Not that I've heard of. With the extended public beta Microsoft did, as well as adjusting their stance on sharing relevant coding with 3rd party vendors to develop drivers for hardware, it seems they have worked out most of the kinds of issues that were seen with Vista. Poke would be a better source of info though, I know he's running it on his computer. -- Wyn talk 17:13, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
So, what would I gain from going to 7 from XP? NuVII 17:48, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
If your hardware is up to date, you gain speed, as well as DirectX 10 capabilities. XP does not, and will not ever support DirectX 10. I'm sure there are a plethora of other more technical items, but even on my current XP machine, the beta performed better, programs loaded faster etc. -- Wyn talk 17:54, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Really...
Imma pirate buy windows 7 when I make a new machine, then.
When you say up-to-date hardware... NuVII 17:58, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, the newer the hardware, the more benefit you will see as far as performance, because most new hardware was built for the Vista architecture, and Windows 7 has is in that same family of operating systems but improved upon. (ie resource management, power management, etc). XP uses a different base architecture (thus the need for all new drivers for Vista/Windows 7). -- Wyn talk 18:02, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
But, is there a great/big/huge difference with Vista? -- Cyan 18:22, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
I couldn't tell you, since I don't run Vista. Ask poke. -- Wyn talk 18:47, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
You were still running XP then I guess? -- Cyan 18:59, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
http://en.windows7sins.org/ disclaimer: I like Windows and will be installing 7 when I can afford a nice 1TB hard drive Image:User_Felix_Omni_Signature.pngelix Omni 19:06, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Despite my opinion that you should never ever be using Windows except for the vidya (through a VM if at all possible), Windows 7 isn't that bad. The only thing it really has on other OSes is that Aero thing, though, which even I'll admit isn't so bad.
Oh well, at least it's not as bad as OS X (*giggle*). –Jette 08:13, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

W7 isn't supposed to suck out all your computers power like Vista does. Most people had problems because budget boxes wern't made to run Vista. Im constantly at 40% usage of my 4GB of RAM on my Vista PC. — Seru Talk 12:41, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Ubuntu 9.04 uses up less hard disk space (while copying a lot of useful programs like openoffice and Gimp), boots up and shuts down as fast as windows 7, copies large files faster and a lot of smaller files a little slower than windows 7, also note that Windows vista and/or 7 has a delay up to 30 seconds when deleting files. Most important: Ubuntu is free software. --Boro 10px‎ 16:45, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
That's nice Boro, but this is a conversation about Win7, not Ubuntu. :P Also, some of us need to use actual Windows based software, rather than freebies. -- Wyn talk 16:49, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
There is one simple question: Why? Why do you think that there is a need for Win based Applicationss? --Boro 10px‎ 17:53, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
I need them to make my living as an instructor, since all my classes are on Microsoft Office, or other Windows based software. I have nothing against open source freebies, but unfortunately, there isn't a public school computer lab here that is equipped with such. Also, many people prefer to have their home machines compatible with work/school machines for ease of transferring data. Show me one major corporation (aside from the open source producers themselves), or major university that is going to be set up with open source software. But this is all getting even further off topic than you were to begin with Boro. If you have something to add, +/- regarding Windows 7 please share. -- Wyn talk 18:14, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Windows 7 is the best OS Microsoft has put out imo. Anything XP can do, 7 can simply do better: it runs faster than XP, it boots faster than XP, it's more secure than XP, it has more support for current things than XP, it looks better than XP, it runs 64-bit WAYYYYYY better than XP, etc. Basically, the only reason you can possibly have to not get Windows 7 is the money issue. The 0 day issues are null here because of the extensive beta test, and I've not had a single problem with the OS at all. DarkNecrid 18:53, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Yes W7>XP. But its sad how many comments I see of "I have seen nothing but good reviews about Windows 7...but I am not getting it till SP1" :/. --Dominator Matrix 19:15, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
  1. FYI: all indian state schools use GNU/Linux in the education.
  2. following text copied from http://en.windows7sins.org/privacy/ "Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is Microsoft's system for remotely checking your computer. WGA scans various parts of your hard drive to reassure Microsoft that you are running an "approved" version of Windows. WGA is mandatory monitoring system and if Microsoft decides you are not "approved" they can disable your computer's functionality. ...

For Windows 7 they are changing the name of the product to Windows 7 Activation Technologies (WAT), but the functionality remains the same.

Microsoft's version of a "Trusted Computing" scheme is called "Palladium". Proprietary programs have included malicious features before, but Palladium would make it universal.
Hollywood and the record companies will use Palladium to ensure that downloaded videos and music can be played only on one specified computer and the sharing of 'authorized' files will be entirely impossible." - They can check whatever they want on your computer. They can check what you do on your computer. They will be able to read your E-mails and monitor your computer activities. Sooner or later They will gain a complete control of your computer. Your computer will no longer be Yours. And Your children may not be able to reach their full extent because using MS based applications discourages them to study programs' source code, modify programs to meet their needs and so on.
  1. Windows 7 can even make Non-windows apps (e.g. firefox) run slower to discourage you from using free software. More than that, Microsoft's goal is to force computer makers to make computers that will only work with windows, and won't let you use other operation systems.
really: Really read these windows7sins. Felix linked to you and finally open your eyes: Microsoft's goal is to oppress you. Dont let it to do so.
more here. --Boro 10px‎ 19:24, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
1. Never trust everything your read on the internet 2. If that was all true then I do believe the EU would be after Microsoft on the front but there not. And no Microsoft cannot make certain apps run slower because they are free (as in freedom) software. Its purely propaganda. Not to mention the website looks like a 1994 geosites run off. --Dominator Matrix 19:29, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
WGA is to stop/prevent pirating of microsoft products that you are suppose to pay for, they are NOT going to disable computers for running open source/free software. Why is it Boro that in everything you do, you see/believe in the great conspiracy theories of "The Man is going to keep the little people down?" Keep this trash off my page please. -- Wyn talk 19:52, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Not to sound like a wet blanket, Wyn, but it's been documented many times that 'the Man' tries to do over the little guy, as it were. Our histories are full of such incidents, companies and governments manipulating the people to what they want/think is best, even if it's not what the people want. It happens a lot, though I haven't bothered looking into what Microsoft is up to, maybe because I know there's probably some geeks in basements all around the world capable, 30 minutes from 'The Man' releases stuff, of bypassing all that non-sense. Gotta lovez dem geeks ^_^ ~~000.00.00.00~~ 20:00, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, I am perfectly happy running Windows and Windows based software. I don't see that changing any time soon. The next box I build will be running Windows 7. Now.. please keep this on topic, which btw.. is Windows 7. Thanks -- Wyn talk 20:09, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Archive

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User_talk:Reflect/archive coulda checked if i have one before saying i dont... --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 95.42.114.191 (talk).
Well, you also are required to link it. I will lift your ban if you read the policy. -- Wyn talk 13:04, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
red it...anyway i had problems on linking archive before..was gonna do it later, but did it now...-.- The preceding unsigned comment was added by 95.42.114.191 (talk) at 13:13, 02 November 2009 (UTC).
I've lifted your block, so please login. -- Wyn talk 14:00, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
I think both of you need to take note of the one-revert rule, but more importantly, Wyn, I think you could've taught by example how an archive should be created (e.g. maybe create the archive, use the archive box), considering Reflect is a new user and probably not accustomed to editing or using templates. Also, autoblocked accounts need their IP unblocked if the account is also unblocked, but I went ahead and did that.
That aside, welcome to the wiki, Reflect :). -- pling 17:14, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
I don't believe I violated 1RR Pling, I reverted his removal, and added comments explaining he needed to archive. Her reverted, I reverted and added a comment about it being part of policy. Both of my "reverts" actually constitute a change, so, no violation. If you see it differently, please block me, I would rather that than what you just did. -- Wyn talk 17:26, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
I didn't mean to 'warn' anyone here, I was just attempting (perhaps not very well) to provide advice. It was a minor part of my comment. I'm certainly not going to block over it. -- pling 17:47, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Do you know?

How could i make my signature code shorter? I don't quite like it as it is now. - J.P.Talk 00:21, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Would a template work?-- Shew 00:23, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Pretty sure templates are against da rulez. You could use apostrophes instead of the <b>, <i>, etc. tags. –Jette 00:25, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Oh, apparently the reason they're not allowed is because they're easily targeted by vandals.-- Shew 00:27, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Just to point out, <span style> = <font color> so you really didn't save anything. And the shortend color codes don't work with font color, so you need to change it to #000000 or black. -- Wyn talk 00:59, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] linzee

Responded to all the rants. You could probably remove the protection on her page now that she has time to talk again.  :o –Jette 12:34, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

We still have the basic problem that was the root cause of locking it in the first place... it's 350k and breaking browsers. So here's the quandry we face with this question.... do we unlock it and allow people to respond to her answers (thus making the size of the page even bigger and more problematic), or do we leave it locked until these topics are mass archived on Saturday thus eliminating the actual reason it was locked to begin with? I personally am of mixed opinion so a FEW other opinions would be welcome (NO GIANT WALLS OF TEXT PLEASE, keep it short and to the point.) -- Wyn talk 14:22, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Why not archive right now? :S--Unendingfear 14:30, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I agree, that would solve most of the problems, even if it goes into a temporary or separate archive so people can actually find it. Most of those topics are closed and require no further discussion. A few might be reopened, but being new topics won't hurt them. Letting the topics sit there locked for a week won't really help anything. Misery 14:38, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
I am hesitant to create yet ANOTHER temp page for Linsey, though yes, if it were understood it's an archive not to be further responded to by her and then perm archived on Saturday.... Would people find the link? -- Wyn talk 14:51, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Your spies came clean, they told me everything. You are under arrest for assault and the attempted murder of the wiki. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in the court of The Internet. How do you plea? — Jon Lupen 16:42, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

UM WUT? that's a broken link, and I have absolutely no clue what you are going on about. I dislike nonesensical posts on my page, so can you please try to be clearer in the future? -- Wyn talk 16:44, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Try the link now. The image that's attached to it and the fact that the wiki went down for a short period of time earlier should explain the joke... — Jon Lupen 16:46, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, of course it was me, you can see that in the RC when I unprotected Linsey's talk page. I can't help it that IT can't find/fix the bug that does that when we protect/unprotect pages. I still don't believe this was worthy of noting on my page. (as for it being a joke, it's not, it's just annoying). -- Wyn talk 16:49, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
It was a joke. If I was pissed or anything, I would have made a huge deal about it and filled several pages with walls of text. I'm just making light of the entire situation. I guess I'll just wave this off as the two of us not sharing the same sense of humor then. — Jon Lupen 16:53, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] How did you do that?

Wyn, I have been looking at the source of your user page and your templats, and still can't figure out how you did it. How did you get the "criminal line-up" of characters? 42 - talk 18:55, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Well that 'splains it (in Ricky Ricardo speak). I thought it was something that the wiki itself could do, composite the pictures if you gave it head shots. Either way, it looks cool, thanks for, erm, "'splainin" it. 42 - talk 19:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Monthly date

Is there a possible way to get a comand on wiki to know things by the days (of the month), for example {{CURRENTDAY}} but for months? What I'm trying to get at is User:Halogod35/Theme to change according to a specific date stamp. Example: switches to halloween theme from October 15 through November 5 and then christmas from december 10th through january 15th. -- Halogod35 00:34, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm sure there is, ask poke. -- Wyn talk 00:37, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
You mean, something else than {{CURRENTMONTH}}??--Fighterdoken 01:21, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, something like that. It's complicated. -- Halogod35 02:47, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Question: Heroes in PvP

Hey Wyn, I'm not really sure where to stick this so maybe you can help me move it to the correct spot since you're a wiki guru. Maybe you can even answer it. Since the recent update that removed heroes from PvP, why can you or even what's the point of "buying" heroes with faction from a Priest of Balthazar. Was checking him for skills I have yet to unlock and saw the heroes tab still listed. And from the wiki updates page(s) heroes can't be used in really any form of PvP now. :S Magic Talk 03:26, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

A PvP character can have all items unlocked. That means not only can you see what builds you want to run on your heroes, but you can also see what the equipment would look like (runes, etc). Not much of a bonus, but that's the only advantage I can think of. King Neoterikos 03:35, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
So basically what you're saying is heroes can now only be used to create builds and equipment sets to plan out builds for your characters. (Little O/T but can a PvP character equip heroes in their party and test their heroes builds out in Isle of the Nameless? Magic Talk 03:40, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Maybe ANet has plans to bring back Hero Battles or something similar in the future. 42 - talk 18:53, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
