Answers to various questions

Hello everyone,

To help me keep my thoughts focused into one main status area, I've created a little mini-journal to give me a spot to drop quick status updates about what I'm up to. Image:UserEmilyDiehlGrin.gif

Even though I've been a bit slower to respond, please feel free to continue to send me questions and comments as usual!

As a general update, here's some wiki stuff that may be of interest to you!

Image Contributions
I'm still working on renders when I have spare time! If there are any that require my attention as soon as possible, please don't hesitate to point them out to me on this talk page. For the rest, I'll keep chugging along.
Other Projects
I've had to bump a few of my projects onto my main projects page. I haven't forgotten about any of them, but I've had to shift priorities a bit for some of the bigger ones. If there is anything that you guys really need pulled from that list, just let me know. I'll continue chipping at this stuff as I have free time.
Bugs and Questions
We've managed to net Mike and his team for the wiki, so if you have bugs to report, he's your man!
Trivia
As always, if you guys have questions about trivia references, don't be scared to ask me to confirm or deny them. We know you guys put a lot of thought into figuring out the obscurities, so we don't mind helping out if you get stuck.
It's been a bit tougher to get trivia answers lately because all teams are really heavily focused on GW2 (mine included). I send regular emails to the team containing questions, and I still try to follow-up on the requests that you all have, but sometimes response times are a little slower than they used to be. I just wanted to let you all know that I'm not ignoring any questions, and I will keep asking folks periodically until I get responses. Thanks for understanding :)

[edit] Facet of Spirit & Grenth

Hey again Emily, I am curious about 2 things.

  • Since the Goddess of Truth was a Paragon, how come her Facet is a Dervish? and
  • Was Grenth human before defeating Dhuum and become a God?

hope you can answer these 2 questions for me. --MageMontu 18:44, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Mage! I'll find out these answers for you and let you know :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:54, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
oki, thnx Emily ^^ --MageMontu 20:30, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Heya Mage! I was told that "this is something for Tyrian scholars to debate. Certainly there are those who believe that all of the current gods were mortal humans at one time. It'd be up to the gods themselves to say for sure and they seem to be reticent on the matter". So, for your second question, you'll have to accept that as my answer 'cause it's all I'm going to get XD. I'll double check on the first part of it again in my next email, though. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:12, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
So that mean we will never know the secret behind the gods, or is it for now? Cause I think GW2 will be something like Ancient Dragons vs Old Gods; The Ultimate Match --MageMontu 22:19, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Any answer concerning the Facet of Spirits? --MageMontu 08:20, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
Hiya Mage! I sent this question out again today. I'll let you know what I find out. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:25, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Okie Dokie --MageMontu 07:01, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
It's probably a design choice. Lore wise Dervishes and Paragons are closely knit anyways especially considering the culture the Elonians/real life counterparts have, so it's not too far of a stretch, especially since Dervishes worship all of the gods. Design wise, it's a lot easier to make a solo Dervish boss than it is a solo Paragon boss since a Paragon is a class dedicated to group oriented stuff. 71.113.171.141 06:52, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Seers of Twilight?

Hullo Emily :) I have been surfing around information about Abaddon when I got to a a redirect to The Seers of Twilight, there is no page for them but there are a few brief comments about them in their talk page, and the page that did existed was deleted. In the Abaddon talk page, right at the bottom you can find it. Since time has passed and no question,I thought of getting to this headon and ask you :) Can you provide an asnwer about them? Who they are... what did they do... how (and if) are they actuelly related to Abaddon... or even if they realy exist? Thanks in advance :) 89.139.165.32 19:42, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

At least you could post the page where you got redirected to that page from. (Few minutes later) I did some research and seems it's just rubbish. I could be wrong although. – Barinthus 20:33, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Talk:Abaddon right in the bottom 89.139.165.32 05:54, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Every now and then, someone anonymously adds their own theories or fanfic to an article, like in these edits, since no one has been able to back it up with sources, I'm pretty sure the Seers of Twilight edits fall into this category. -- Gordon Ecker 06:21, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
You may be right, but still, some speculations appeared to be correct if you dig into it realy much. Maybe this is another one? 89.139.165.32 08:20, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
It shouldn't stay on the page, no need to note player fiction myths, even if it's based on the official story. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 08:26, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, theories and speculation generally belong on talk pages and user pages, and any theories or speculation within main namespace articles should be described as such, as they are in the Flameseeker Prophecies and Blood And Smoke articles, rather than being haphazardly mixed with canonical information as they were in the Abaddon and Tyria (world) articles. -- Gordon Ecker 09:53, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I've personally never heard of this group, but I will double check for you. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:15, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tease

There's been some RV wars over at GWiki about some trivia for Tease. Apparently, Tease is an exact copy of this picture of Mila Kunis. The poster actually considered it important enough to create a thread on Guru about it. It's rather obvious that it's a photoshopped copy, I just want to know what Anet has to say about it?
Oh, I see that the same editor has already posted it here too... --Macros

I doubt she going to say anything about this. Even if they just copy+paste the skill icon their not going to admit it ~ KurdImage:User Kurd sig.png 16:03, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Or, um, someone could have used it a s reference photo? Like artists do? --Star Weaver 17:03, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Trivia: Tahlkora

Hello! I just wanted to check something really quickly: since I'm a fan of both GW and LOST, I noticed that Tahlkora has a line ("Don't tell me what I can't do!") often spoken by one of the coolest character on LOST, John Locke. Is this an intentional reference?

Many thanks!

Could just be something she says... I doubt it's a reference :/ -- Brains12 \ talk 01:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure on this one, so I passed it along as a question to the designers :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:49, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Thank you, that's awesome! --190.0.21.127 01:38, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "They're on Fire!" Triva Qustion

is this a reference to Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street? i believe there is a part were his old now crazy wife yells this in the move/musical. thanks in advance for the answer. 75.165.110.13 09:06, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Could be a reference to many things and besides this skill was created when Nightfall was released, along time before Sweeney Todd.
Sweeny Todd was a penny serial (called The String of Pearls) back in the 1840s and was turned into a play in 1979. It's a bit older than the movie. --71.229.253.172 09:28, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
and the game for that matter.75.165.110.13 19:26, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] A favor...

Hi Emily. This is another of those huge request that we wiki users love to throw in your direction #^_^ Recently players have found, within the gw.dat file, a large list of Nightfall locations, together with a small description for (almost) all of them. A few are from places we already knew the name of, and most of those locations appear to be things found in the game but that have not been officially named. We were left in doubt if it would be better or not to add those names and descriptions to the articles where we think they belong...After some discussion, the community decided to try asking you for help.

The list of places found in the file, together with a tentative division by region and a guess at where they are found in-game, is here (I have wikified it for your convenience). We would like to ask the following:

  1. Would you (as in, Arena Net) allow us to post that information here on the wiki? It wasn't something released to us, just something found within the .dat file.
  2. Are those names "official" ones, or have they been discarded? For example, it's very easy to find where the Plaza of Art is; but is that place "officially" named Plaza of Art, and the name was just never mentioned in game, or has the name Plaza of Art been considered and then rejected?
  3. Assuming both questions above have favorable answers, do you, Emily, believe you would have time to look at the list itself and tell us if our speculations are right? It would be good to know if each place is where we think it is, so we may add those bits of information to the proper articles.
  4. Assuming the above question is accepted, would you also have time to correct the wrong speculations and to tell us where the places we couldn't find are, in game? That would allow us to finish this issue and place properly all information found about those landmarks.

I have a feeling that this belongs more to the writing team, since it feels like the kind of thing they have created, but since you're our main guru regarding wiki issues, and this is (kind of) a wiki issue...Thanks, even if you can't do any of it : ) Erasculio 23:26, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Emily is not allowed to comment on things that haven't been released or dug up in .Dat file. But i don't think it would be a problem if we added it ourself ~ KurdImage:User Kurd sig.png 08:42, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

but haven't they released it if its in the dat on are computers?75.165.124.46 06:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

I'll do some research about this, Erasculio. I don't know whether I can comment on anything in the .dat that hasn't been released into the game, but I can find more details on this grey area. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:02, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks : ) We all know you're realy really busy, so there's no need to hurry. Erasculio 20:50, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Well hell, I paid 50$ for the game, and what do you know, one of the things I got with my 50$ was a .dat file. Sounds like that counts as releasing to me. 72.83.249.20 04:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually, you payed 50$ for a license to use their game and create an account that they completely own and control (you just lease it out so you can connect to them), a manual so you know how to play, and a CD that downloads a .dat file that they also own and doesn't have anything like this on it. In fact, you "own" nothing but the box, the manual, those paper things, and the CD. You don't own your account, the .dat file, the .dat file's contents (especially not the one you have to -image to get all the hidden stuff viewable in a method that you're technically not supposed to do by the EULA), so yeah. You keep believing that pretty wrong and uninformed legal knowledge there Mr. 72.83.249.20 and I'll keep laughing. DarkNecrid 09:52, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
He didn't agree to anything until he plays the game. It's possible to view most if not all of this information without ever playing guild wars or "signing" anything. Thus he can view this information off of the dat which he got on the cd he owns without agreeing to anything. So keep laughing like an uninformed fool DarkNecrid. 122.104.165.13 15:22, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Stop squabbling. -- Brains12 \ talk 15:23, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I am actually very interested to know what landmarks are in the game and which are not, and if any info, especially Arachnia, that is found in game can be considered legit for lore. Emily, if you can respond to anything about the landmarks and Arachnia found in the .dat file, I would be very thankful. --Azazel The Assassin 03:30, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Due to the fact that is been nearly 2 months since this has been answered...I assume A.Net will not/can not comment at all about "stuff found in the gw.dat". Paying any amount doesn't allow you to snoop around. In fact I'm sure its against the EULA due to the fact that its breaking the (some) non disclosure agreement. [edit] Weapon bonuses that didn't make it as inscriptions

There are at least two weapon bonuses that didn't make it into an inscription form - those are +15% -1 regen hp and +15% -1 regen energy weapon bonuses. I'm wondering if it's possible for you to find out why is that. Was it an oversight or a design decision? Many thanks!!! If you are unable to help, that's okay; or can tell me who to ask, that'd be appreciated. – Barinthus 01:56, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Here are images of weapons with this mod. That appears strange to me as normally Anet tries to give PvP-characters all means a PvE-character could use in PvP. There are also no unique items with this mod. Maybe Anet just forgot them? It would be nice if they got added to the game. :) The fact that they only appear on weapons with inherent mod makes them to a Prophecies and Factions-only feature, and unattainable for weapon skins that are always inscribable. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 10:14, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure, guys. I'll send off an email to our items guy to check on this for you. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:03, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
These were in the game for quite some time but didn't make it to the J menu or any unique items, yes. I think they maybe retired the effect, which still sucks cause afaik you can get it in-game. Not much you can do I guess, there are still people with the old unconditionals (+15%/no drawback) from launch so...;) DarkNecrid 11:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Trivia Question

I'm going to be pretty specific here, so. :P

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Titans_get_plus_Health_regen_and_set_enemies_on_fire_each_time_he_is_hit.

Is this really the longest skill name? NOTE: I am including "skills" that we the players can't see, is there another hidden skill that is longer?

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Monster_doesn%27t_get_death_penalty

Is it true that all monsters are affected by this?

More importantly, how do these work? Do all monsters use these when spawned, we do not ever see them use them, but they have no activation time, could they be faster than "instant", and thus don't show up in the skill monitor? Could you generate a list of all these types of skills, if there are more?

I'm deeply interested in this! DarkNecrid 12:46, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

1: Yes, Titans...hit is the longest skill name in the game.
2: No.
3: They're probably static like Charm Animal. You get the bonus if it's on your skill bar. Check Guild_Wars_Wiki:Game_integration/Skills for a list of every skill in the game, monster, player, and other. ~Shard Image:User Shard Sig Icon.png 01:25, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Trivia - Ensign Lumi

Hiya. What is that boss name a reference to, exactly? Lumi from Eternum Pariah? Ensign... a second time? Both? -Auron 15:13, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

What's with that boss anyway, appearing in different places. Is he the leader of the corsairs or something? --MageMontu 20:46, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Last Day dawns Cinematic

According to this picture, Sir Tydus had a line in the opening cinematic of Prophecies. Is it true? I'm asking because in that screenshot it doesn't have the Sir Tydus: thing before his line. --MageMontu 11:15, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

I suppose you're looking for Emily to confirm this, not if it existed, my mistake. From that pic, I'd say that's an old version of the opening cinematic. I haven't watched the opening too many times, but I don't recall that line being there. And the skip button looks more like older builds of the game (not that it can't be changed). Unless it's supposed to be like from the very first time you load the game, which would be something I've never see. Yukiko Image:User_Yukiko_Sig.png 23:33, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Better late than never

I thought I should give you a heads up that we have changed the guild page policy to include a requirement of an English language summary on all foreign language pages. I know you have posted about allowing foreign language guild pages in the past, but from reading over those old posts what I saw was more of a concern for the way people were commenting on them rather than the actual need to have at least the basic information available to the entire community in English. We all realize that this is the wiki that the game links connect to, and therefore we need to allow the global presence which includes native languages, however, enforcing content on a page only a fraction of the community can read is difficult. I plan to monitor the guild namespace fairly closely and will do my best to see that all warnings or notices are done respectfully. We are also establishing a translation project to assist in getting the English summaries done on existing guild pages. I hope these changes will meet with your approval, and please feel free to speak up if you see any problems.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 03:28, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up, Wyn. I've brought up the topic of looking into the details of creating multi-language wikis to our community folks in the past, so I'll make a note to send a follow-up email about it on Monday. Are there many guild pages that are not English (I assume so if this was made policy)? If so, are there specific languages that you're seeing a large influx of content from? --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:34, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, we are working our way through the alphabet atm, but I see a lot of Russian, German, Dutch, and French pages. The tags are placing the pages into Category:Translation needed so if you wish to monitor the numbers as we get the tagging done, feel free.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 03:41, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Very cool! Having this hard data in-hand will really help us figure out the best thing to do for other languages. Thanks for doing this tagging. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:45, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
I was also thinking that if you need some numbers, we can also easily do DPL lists using the language variable in the guild infobox. It would give you much more accurate numbers of what languages are being used, since the tags we are currently placing are only for the purpose of getting translations on pages that are done completely in foreign languages, and will be removed as the translations are done. I believe the DPL lists could be done whenever you wish.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 05:05, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] reference in Asuran Scan icon?

On GuildWiki, it has been noted by a couple people that the icon for this skill resembles a Pokeball. I personally can't see any resemblance at all, but it was insisted that someone ask you about it anyway. —Dr Ishmael 15:47, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Eh, that they are both circular? There are lots of round things in the wrold, y'know? Backsword 15:54, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I think it's more that it has a similar line going around the middle, a circle in the centre, and a beam of light coming out of it. I can see somewhat of a resemblance. -- Brains12 \ talk 15:57, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Temple of Grenth in Lornar's Pass

I was recently in Lornar's Pass site seeing and I decided to check out the one of a kind Temple of Grenth just for something to do. It got me wondering, it seems a strange place to put an entrance to the Underworld - although I think it's totally awesome. Was this originally going to be the only entrance to the Underworld and players would have to fight their way here to enter it instead of entering from an outpost? How come there is no other similair "temple" other than Lyssa's ice cave in Mineral Springs? Why is there no FoW entrance in an explorable area? So many questions brought up by an awesome location in Guild Wars. 122.104.161.96 16:21, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

But there is. Lok at the following article. Temple of Balthazar. --MageMontu 16:30, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Wow I played 3 years without knowing about that hahaha. I find it interesting you can't enter FoW there but you can enter UW from the other one. Maybe cause Lornar's Pass is a lvl 20 area and the falls... well isn't. 122.104.161.96 20:43, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Incidentally, both The Falls and Lornar's Pass only allow 6 player teams from their closest outposts, unless you travel from ToA or Snake Dance respectively, and LP can be reached before The Falls when playing through the game... – josəph 00:45, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] N.O.X. trivia

Is the skill "Divider Drive," used by N.O.X. after he reaches a certain health amount, a reference to the anime Gao Gai Gar's Dividing Driver? If so, are there not a number of other mech references throughout the new golem quests? Felix Omni 16:12, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] M.O.X. quote

What does the MOX quote "*PEACE MEANS HAV-ING A BIG-GER GOL-EM THAN THE OTH-ER GUY*" reference? We (GuildWiki) have got it listed as a reference to Iron Man, but Big Stick ideology has existed for ages, well before Iron Man. The MOX quote is almost an exact replica of Iron Man's, but the Iron Man quote is almost certainly a reference to big stick ideology. Thanks. --Shadowcrest 19:19, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Notable guilds

Hi Emily! I know you are so crazy busy with everything, so I hate to even bring this up, but it appears that the Notable guilds page on gw.com has fallen terribly out of date. Since this is the page we use to determine whether a guild gets the Notable guild distinction, it makes it problematic. I am just wondering if that particular page of the website has been 'shelved' and we should look at expanding the requirements to include other sources, or if it's just a time/priority thing? If the latter, what are your criteria for a guild being placed on that page? Would give us at least a place to start. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 14:10, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

I believe there would be volunteers willing to prep articles for qualified guilds and submit them so that they could just be copied into the page, if the time it takes to do that is the issue. -Binary 19:27, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Honestly, I'm not sure how that page was initially run. I don't see why we couldn't include other sources of information, but that's going to be more Regina's territory than mine. I'll mention it to her and see what she thinks :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 17:37, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Heya guys! I just sat down with Regina to chat about this topic and another related one. We're going to be making some changes to this page (and other related guild pages on the site) towards the middle of next month, so keep an eye out for that. Thanks for bringing that to my attention...I appreciate it :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:48, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] pets and death

"Animal companion owners should be aware that at the instant the animal companion dies, all of the owners skills will be temporarily disabled (from 3 to 10 seconds, depending on attribute points in Beast Mastery). The one exception to this rule is if your character is still in Ascalon (pre-Searing)." Now i have had it where my pet has died and not have my skills disabled can you shead any more light on this?75.172.47.227 04:37, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

It's like how when you just get rezzed at a shrine, you have a few seconds of invulnerability. Keeps things going. I mean, how pissed would you be if your pet died, and just wehn you get him rezzed again, he dies and all your skills are shutdown again? — Wolf 04:26, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
no my point is it happens outside of pre searing. and it isnt like the rezzed thing. i think it has to do with if attacking, it could just be a bug.75.172.47.227 04:37, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Skills have always been disabled when your pet dies, that's not a bug, it's a game mechanic, and is one of the prices you pay for keeping your pet with you. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 05:24, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
yet again not what i mean. there are times when it dose not happen (out side of pre searing). i know that is a game mechanic i wouldn't be asking about it other wise.75.172.47.227 06:57, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
If your pet dies within a certain amount of time of it being rezzed, your skills do not get disabled, or it could be a very rare bug. — Wolf 07:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
how i know thats not what i am talking about is because in iway you want your pet to die. and i play iway all the time and it happens every once in a wile, so theirs an other circumstance where that happens.75.172.47.227 08:13, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] mesh tights issue with Mesmer Elite Noble armor

Hi Emily. Someone pointed out to me ingame that there is an issue with the female version of the Elite Noble armor; the hose to be exact:
The front view image you uploaded for the gallery has mesh tights. But all other images of the leggings for this armor (the samle for the page itself, the gray components in the gallery, the images on the old wiki and those on the german wiki) do not have these mesh tights.
I noticed that the leggings from the standard version of this armor, Courtly armor, do have mesh tights, though.
(Btw, this armor should therefore rather be named "Elite Courtly armor" since there does not exist a "Noble amor", but that's another story)
The pants of these two armors also appear to use the same model besides this fact, which makes the standard version of this armor piece kind of more interesting than the elite's.

Is this intended, or is this an unwanted bug and the female version of the Elite Noble armor proposed to have mesh tights as well? —ZerphatalkThe Improver 20:54, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Ick, this could be a bug in the initial render I capped. I found in my early days of render capping that when I'd cap images in quick succession that different pieces (like tights/tattoos/etc) had the potential to remain on the model even though an armor set was flipped. I learned why it was happening and stopped doing what was causing it, but some of the early professions may still have remnants of my errors. When I have a chance, I'll pop in and check it out. Thanks for the heads up! :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:55, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Hm thought I already did this

You did, in fact, do it already. If you scan recent changes you'll notice someone (accidentally I assume) thought the original was vandalism and tagged it for deletion. Subsequently, it was speedily wiped out. Lojiin 22:48, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah :) I noticed that after the fact. It's funny because when build notes are ready to go, I have to scramble to get them live on half a dozen sites, so sometimes my brain goes into auto pilot. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
So what you're saying, really, is "An easy way to toy with Emily's head is to 'accidentally' cause such pages to vanish from time to time?" :D Lojiin 22:52, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
That would definitely do it....lol. I'm sure at the very least you could get me to repeatedly post something over and over before I realized that someone was messing with me. I'd prefer if people didn't try that because it would be frustrating if it became a habit :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:54, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah sry it was me. When I clicked on d page I saw a bunch of random letters and thought it was the usual monthly vandalism. I tagged it for speedy deletion. After tagging I checked the history and saw your name. When I tried removing the tag, the page was already deleted (It all happened in 10 seconds Oo). Again sry about that ^^.

[edit] Everlasting Sinister Automatonic

I am not sure if you are the correct person to contact about this but... can you try and confirm if this is a real tonic or not. I have personally never heard of it or ever seen anyone trying to sell the tonic. If you could do that I would really appreciate it. Thanks! ^-^ --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 18:56, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I can confirm that it is a "real" tonic. It was made just in case we ever want to use it, however it is not accessible in the game, ANYWHERE at this time. It does exist in the .dat but it does NOT drop from ANYTHING, including the Zaishen chest. There is absolutely no chance that it drops from the Zaishen chest or anything else. This has been confirmed through code. I hope that was definitive enough. - Image:User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 19:16, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Game Update Page - Tonics

Hey Emily, sorry to bother you again but I wanted to ask a question. Why on the update page (on the main site and here), in the "More information on Zaishen Rewards can be found here.", do you have it link to the Zaishen rewards page? I think since it is near the information on the tonics, it might be a good idea to have the link to the Zaishen Calander there so that people can see what the new tonic is =D. --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 20:14, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

The linked page is the correct page for "more information on Zaishen rewards" - the calendar is linked on that page, too. poke | talk 12:32, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Heya Shadow! I think the update notes link to Zaishen rewards because it's an explanation of the rewards as a whole (and we wanted people to learn more about them when the reward was still new). Since they've been in effect for a few months now, I'll check with the team to see if it makes sense to just link off to the tonic calendar instead. Sorry if this answer isn't really coherent...it's Monday and I haven't gotten enough coffee into me just yet ;) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:06, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wallpapers on website

Hi, I was wondering if you could open up the directory http://www.guildwars.com/images/wallpaper/ or even http://www.guildwars.com/images/ on the website. (Just post a index.php there that makes a list of all jpg in the folder). Pretty please? (Qanar | talk) 17:17, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Er...Elaborating a bit, we have noticed that the wallpapers section on the American website has changed a bit. Now each game has its own wallpaper page, featuring at most nine images (the Factions one, for example). The thing is, there used to be far more wallpapers than nine for each game; and while the American website apparently does not have those wallpapers anymore, we can still find them in the other Guild Wars official websites (103 at the European website, for example, some different ones on the site from Taiwan, etc). We know you guys are working on the website and that you specifically are very very busy, but is there any chance that those wallpapers could be seen again on the American site? Just a note: if one day you are at work without anything to do, with everything in the wiki and on the website completely fixed and finished, all possible content up on both sites, the little fishes in the aquarium already happily fed and etc (in other words, never xD), any chance you could find out for us if we could ever get the Guild Wars cartoons from the Korean site on the American site, like this one? Given how that's likely not possible, any chance we could one day get a transcript or something along these lines for those? I have no idea how these things work, but if the Korean website had to ask the main Arena Net company permission for the content in those videos, maybe there's an easy way to access those transcripts and hopefully one day make them available...? For one thing, Emily doesn't deal with the wiki pages themselves, other than to post like any other user. I don't understand how there could be anything embedded within that page, the code is clean, and you can't add any kind of software etc. to it. You may wish to scan your computer. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:51, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey Emily, it seems that when you added the website projects tab to your userpage you forgot to change the "This" parameter for the Journal, Characters and Archives to reflect the extra tab and thus they show the previous one as active. Hope this makes sense since I sometimes have a tendency of confusing people with my explanations. [edit] LF Brant

Hi Emily. Don't know if you have seen this already but we started a project for skill animations here. After visiting Brant's site I wonder if he can help us out if hes not too busy with GuildWars2. I know your currently swamped with wiki-projects and GuildWars2 so take it easy. No ones in a rush. ~ KurdImage:User Kurd sig.png 21:06, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

No, unfortunately Brant has moved onto another company, so he's not able to help out with any of this. I also don't believe that anyone here has the resources to cap animations of each skill effect, so I can't promise help for that large of a project right now :( --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:15, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
In my opinion it's not the difficulty of capturing the skills (which would be quite easy if you prepare it good - talking about me doing it); the problem is how to store the videos as the only possibility on the wiki so far is gif. If the wiki would support a good video format (having flv in mind), we could display self-captured videos much easier. The problem with that is just the encoding to flv, but I think even that would be somehow possible (seeing as how many people work in a good way with the gwdat explorer, it wouldn't be a problem to explain the encoding to flv and have the encode them and then upload them). However then there would be still be the problem of a missing upload function (which could be enabled for custom extensions I think) and the implementation of video player, that wouldn't be abused for "private" videos or even YouTube direct links... On a side note, are there any news about the skill sounds? :) poke | talk 21:35, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
The skill sounds are still on my plate, but they've taken a backseat to other tasks I have going on right now. I haven't forgotten about any of these projects, but my time right now is extremely limited :( --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:17, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

(RI) Hi Emily, sorry for bothering you again. The community has began capping the skill animations ourselves (that's something we can do, so there isn't really a need to use Arena Net resources for this) and converting them to .gif files - here are all Critical Strikes skills, for example. We have a small problem, though - the image files are big, beyond the limit of what we're normally allowed to upload to the wiki. Would it be viable to have the size limit temporarily increased so we may upload these files, or would that consume too much bandwidth and so be hurtful to the wiki? Erasculio 12:15, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Testing a few of Erasculio's animations, it'll let me upload a 1.06 MB animation with a warning of "images over 150 kb is stressful on server", or something along the lines of that. I can't upload a 2.3 MB animation. But you probably already knew that... calor (talk) 16:03, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Power Leak

Hey, so I know you're iffy on the .dat file stuff, but I was just quickly wondering if you could give us the backstory on the following implementation of Power Leak found inside it: If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and target foe loses %str1% Energy. If target foe is not casting a spell, Power Leak instantly recharges.

Like I said, I know you're iffy, but some of us just want to know if this is a very early version of Power Leak that got scrapped, or something else (don't have to specify)! This type of early history on the skills is kind of interesting, so was wondering if you could dig anything up! Thanks either way. DarkNecrid 11:29, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] map pages

Emily... i love wiki, it really helps with the game, unfortunately i am having trouble with the maps. they are very hard to see with the white background... is it possible to put a darker background on the map pages? i realize this might be a big ask and another MAJOR project, but i find the maps stand out a lot better with a dark background and are therefore easier to read and navigate with. just a suggestion... [edit] Image cache.... again...

It seems that certain images are not updating on the image page when a new version is uploaded... however they seem to show up fine on the pages where they are linked. Image:Lupine Mask f.jpg is an example. --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 04:19, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

I looked through the MediaWiki source code on Sunday on this problem and noticed that there are multiple caching functions involved; the one for the image thumbnails (= all resized versions of an image) is called on deletion (which was already a way to get the new images displayed) and on purge; this however doesn't work - would it be possible to have the IT check what the MediaWiki-log says when you ?action=purge an image page, as there are multiple points where the purge task writes something in it? (I think you have to enable it first) It could for example be, that for some reason when the thumbnails should be deleted, exactly that isn't possible (maybe because of rights) poke | talk 07:39, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Random Teleportation Chat/Storage Skills Texmod

69.156.202.3 10:05, 4 November 2008 (UTC) NOX TO Kick it off, I'am tired of beeing warped to a town when I leave off in the hall. Its rather annoying when I'm trying to make an account runn over all my toons finding items Between Toons. (not to mention the constant stream of new items beeing introduced, and the lack of storage space there of). (some ppl are avid collectors, maybe you should introduce a green items/festival items bag where you can store one of each item in it..)I want to Log back where I Logged not put where I didnt want to Be. Dont try telling me this dosn't happen often I have complained about it before and it always happens! Way to often! If it didn't happen would I be complaining about it?

Now Lets get into the chat options like the local/trade dispute. The sea of one color is very hard on the eyes. I think some more colors are in order, party search should be an entirly different color all together. The GREEN" Item Drop list is annoying when im trying to GREEN" Guild chat for example. Team chat and whispers .. comeon guys wheres the rainbow? theres to much meshing we tend to miss things..

On to the Skills, why are the runn skills still 25% when you go in hard mod.. hmm hardmode skill changes like pvp skill adjustments are in order ? There are aot of skills that should function slightly differently in hard mode.. I'm sure you can think of some.

Warning: Oh, I downloaded (Spyware Doctor) and it seems to have come across a backdoor in TEXMOD ... As much as I regret to post this, Seeing how much I liked customizing the halls/skinns Ui and so on with that program. (I'am no longer using it)I sure hope that problem will be resolved, or someone comes up with a clean better program.. that dosnt hint in that direction. 69.156.202.3 10:42, 4 November 2008 (UTC)NOX

1- This happens when the GuildWars Server and your PC are out of sync, as far a I know. Quickly going through charaCters to check their inventory tends to be a bit too much for the server
2- Can't comment on this one, my trade chat is off by default. But I do know MY eyes would hurt seeing 7 different kinds of textcolor floating through my screen.
3- Why would you need an increase in running skills in Hardmode. The whole idea is that the enemies got a 50% speedboost, so you can never outrun them. Thats the 'hard' in hardmode.
4- This is a well-known false positive. Read up on it at GWGuru
--Arduinna talk 11:17, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
I would like to point out that Emily has little if anything to do with actual game issues. These items should be placed in the ArenaNet feedback area. Also, Textmod is NOT an ArenaNet product, so there is nothing they are going to be able to do about the false positive you got on your scan. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:30, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Not making these big pages listing all skill animations is easy, but I'm concerned about server load with the individual animations themselves. I don't expect people to try to open all 1000+ animations at the same time, and we won't have any page in the mainspace with more than one, but they are multiple large image files, many with more than 1 mb. We could just host all the images externally and make all the links into external ones, but that's far less reliable (and less pretty, too : P) than hosting the files inside the
