Black Bear

There are two ways to charm a bear in pre. I know one and know of the other but id appreciate some elaboration

Firstly as a first profession Ranger once you can have a high enough level in expertise you can charm animal faster then the bear can break charm.

The secondly involves two characters and can be done by anyone without a second profession. I've heard mention of a paticular order to doing the second prof quests. I've heard the key is to haveing a Warrior with bane signet to knock it down with a well time charm. My guess is it has to do a bit with luck a bit with distance and a bit with tanking. As i said, I'd appreciate some elaboration

Brutal Mauling

so hey, there's an official wiki and everything now. can we finally get a comment on this? bears get a skill that does normal damage and is slower to activate, resulting in an (arguably minor) lower DPS; but it DOES count as an attack skill, which means there are some paragon skills and other odds and ends that will trigger off this. is the "leftover" Brutal Mauling and its behaviour intended, or an oversight that might one day be corrected?

Well, it no longer even activates on skills, making it purely bad. It's an oversight, given that in other languages it clearly refers to the old skill which caused bleeding.

I charmed my bear at fourth level, with ranger as my secondary profession and using a second player who, as I recall, was a mesmer. It required over 20 attempts before we succeeded. I believe that timing and position of the caster is the key. Caster stands at the very edge of the aggro ring with bear and second player at the center. Every fifth attack the bear will rear up. This is when the charm spell is cast. At the samne moment the second player draws the bear away from the caster. If timed properly, the bear is pulled to far away to break the charm spell. Black Bear NPC

So, anybody seen this guy before? Most likely a bug but I must admit I was rather surprised finding a level 5 "Black Bear" dressed up as a white mantle inside Ice Caves of Sorrows. Even more so when he was healing himself with Healing Signet. :P — Galil 02:14, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Very common bug - frequently seen with the Enchanted Swords/Hammers in Crystal Desert which show up as L5 Dune Lizards. Shame they're not charmable in this form :) --Snograt 13:36, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Charming Guide

This was removed from the main page, thought someone might still value it so sticking it here.

Charming Pre-Searing Black Bear:

You will need to have two people for this. The person not getting the bear will aggro the bear and let it hit him/her without attacking back. The bear will hit three times and then cast his skill Brutal Mauling. When he does this, the person seeking to tame the bear will cast his Charm Animal skill. It may take anywhere from a few minutes to whatever time the glitch takes hold of the bear.

Steps to Tame:

1: Teammate aggros the bear.

2: Bear hits three times and casts his Brutal Mauling.

3: As the bear casts his skill, the tamer casts his Charm Animal at the exact time as that bear.

4: Repeat step 1-3 if it fails.

This is a bit wrong, the Bear will still break the Charm, as the Bear stops to cast Brutal Mauling, as soon as you see the Flash of light, the person who has taken Aggro has to run the away from the Ranger while keeping the Bear Aggro'd If done properly, the Bear will be out of range to use Break CharmAerie swiftarrow 00:07, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Purpose

How to death level a Pre Searing Black Bear ?

I was wondering where i could death level a pre searing black bear to dire? The main problem is getting it to stay at a resurrect shrine, i can actively use both my accounts to capture it but getting it to stay near a shrine is my main problem. If i take my newly captured low level pet to death level with me do you think it will enough to keep the bear occupied at the resurrect shrine until i resurrect? Well the answer to this question is YES! You can death level a bear in pre searing, just takes ages and you can not be afk. You have to keep running back to the bear and letting it kill you over and over until it is level 20, Which is a pain in the ass but if you position gwen as close to the shrine as possible to block the bear when it looses aggro, you do not have to run far to aggro the bear and let it kill you again... Unusually stubborn pet in Pre Searing

After helping someone to charm one and being helped with the same I've been documenting its behaviors. It could just be while it's in Pre-Searing that it continues to behave somewhat similar to the rest of the bears there. This is likely why it has the skill Breaking Charm, because the developers couldn't overcome the standardized 'bear' npc behavior and it's a very troublesome pet there with such (compared to the usual pet behaviors). Builds or skils that utilise Brutal Mauling

I don't suppose anyone has made any builds that specifically utilise the Brital Mauling skill. I have been through all the paragon skills to see all the ones that affect allies (ones that will work on the bear), but I reckon in order to make an effective build with them, it would need some other skills from another profession.

Im asking because now that we can have seven hero parties, I wonder if a good party combination could be made with all members having a Black Bear and with one or two heroes using builds that would utilise the Brutal Mauling skill on all the bears. I know this party make up would be nothing special but Im curious regardless. Titan Crow 20:49, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Is this true?

IMPORTANT: As of Thursday, September 8, 2016 a patch was put in that now makes it impossible to charm the Black Bear pre-searing. This has been tested repeatedly. The patch notes state "Fixed a bug in creature AI that could cause creatures to stop using skills"

The bears in pre were always using both their skills. The reason bear charming works is they were out of range of the person casting 'charm animal' for their 'break charm' to affect it's casting. I don't see how said update changes a thing, they never 'stopped using skills'. In fact once 'charm' was being cast usually they would spam 'break' in an attempt to cancel 'charm' with no effect since by that point charmer is out of it's spell range. 64.222.142.208 20:25, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

added note about unsuccessful charms making the bear un-tameable. It's from experience. If charm fails its best to move on to a new bear. Ppl who spam charm at the wrong time will never get a bear. Durp da durp (talk) 16:11, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
