Has anyone tried to examine this file using various editors to try to see what kinds of nuggets it contains? ThomasOwens 20:22, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I've taken a look through using a GW.dat browser, its fairly interesting stuff until you get a couple of million items in. These days I just use Texmod to extract/modify textures.- TheRave talk (talk) 20:33, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Do you know where I could get a GW.dat browser? ThomasOwens 21:59, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, I found one here, but when I downloaded it and scanned it for viruses, my virus scanner detected two trojans. Perhaps someone could look into this. ThomasOwens 21:35, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
That file DOES NOT contain a virus that I can tell - it appears to be the packager used. However, if you can, I still recommend using the source code and compiling it yourself in case I'm wrong. ThomasOwens 14:05, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
I tried running those files and they both popped up with a command prompt and a split second later they disappeared. Had to keep opening them to see what they said. Don't know how to extract stuff or do anything with them. -- My Talk Lacky 03:32, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
The GwDatBrowser (in the modified version by Smurf) is still available. Use that, not the unpacker. poke | talk 07:41, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Alright thanks Poke, I shall definitely check that out. -- My Talk Lacky 04:32, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

File size[edit]

Could we get an update on this page on the file's size please? So people can check if their gw.dat file isn't corrupted. I have 2 GuildWars games installed (for gwx2 / storage account), but both gw.dat files are different in size... I'd like to be able to check how large the file should be. Sjeng talk 10:02, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

The gw.dat can inflate due to inventory icons. Currently mine is 3.62GB. --Dominator Matrix 10:08, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
When the game works, the gw.dat is not corrupt - as simple as that. poke | talk 14:23, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Browsing the .dat[edit]

I often see people who have scoured the .dat and found little nuggets of info we never got to see (Xunlai Marketplace, for example) and I was wondering just what does browsing the .dat do? Is it merely textures or is it more detailed than that? I use and create Texmod mods, so If it's simply textures I'd be slightly less enticed to download the Gw.dat browser. Only benefit I can see from it is possibly finding something yet to be implemented or never implemented, Which is cool, but still would be very time consuming if there were no folders or directories etc. that could break up the mass filecount into something managable. PariahUser Pariah Pariahmoa.pngtalk 10:27, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

The gw.dat contains everything that is stored on your computer, including textures, 3d models, sound files (with epic music or even speech) and also a lot text files (which are the most interesting for those who are looking for new things ;) ). The gw.dat browser encodes the whole file when it starts and puts all entries in a big list. That list is not separated into folders or anything, as the gw.dat itself is also just a sequence of many files. However, when it has loaded all information completely, you are able to sort by things like type or file size, so that can help you a lot. But still, looking for something special inside of the .dat is hard and takes a lot of time. poke | talk 10:46, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the info Poke, I appreciate it. I'll check it out, If anything for the initial entertainment factor and later on for research purposes. I heard that a German guild was able to pull the Wintersday Hat icons before the end of the festival. I'm especially glad to hear there are text files as that was what I was most interested in. Thanks again. :D PariahUser Pariah Pariahmoa.pngtalk 00:11, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Info Texts[edit]

I've downloaded the gwdatbrowser, and I went through many cool things. One thing I couldn't find was the info texts that you can read in the wiki in a few articles... How do I find these?

i just want to see what the hats will look like 74.176.66.28 20:16, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
