Farming[edit]

The current farming section is less than accurate or efficient. The Tengu mobs (of four) are very often able to wipe out two or more groups of Ettin, making the shown route a race to get even a few shots in, and this being the first 4-5 kills in the zone very rarely results in any drop at all (and even rarer would such a drop be hardened humps). If you have WiK quests active, you can expect a heavy White Mantle presence competing for some Ettin mobs. An average run will allow 8-12 Ettins with most players unable to solo almost all of them. Typically, a good farm run needs to be a few kills to begin getting any drops before taking on the preferred target, and targets which come in small mobs that are quickly and easily dispatched with as few party members as possible.

For Gypsie Ettins, there are two areas that are better suited to farm:

  • North Kryta, (assuming no WiK quests active) where a HH group can run through to the North end near the Ascalon Settlement (from Lion's Arch or D'Allessio), and then flagging any henchmen/heroes away before taking on the pairs of Ettins marauding about from the settlement to Scoundrel's Rise. These Ettins are often spawned randomly, so there is anywhere from 3 to 12 mobs and one boss, yielding 0-5 humps per run, sometimes a rune or rare item or two, and ~150g.
  • D'Alessio Seaboard (Mission) to the point where you have defended Confessor Dorian, and then leave the henchmen/heroes flagged there while running solo to clean up the dozen or so Ettins between the Temple of Tolerance, the Melandru Offering, and Dinas. I prefer this one, as WiK doesn't apply, and my heroes can be flagged at the Confessor, while I head to the Ettins. My heroes easily keep Confessor Dorian alive and crush the onslaught of undead while I solo Ettins and map out. Typically I get 2-6 humps, at least 2 runes, 1-2 rare items, 1 dye, ~20 crafting material (fibre, bone or dust), 1-4 Decayed Orr Emblems (also a Nicholas item and useful for event collectors), and ~500g in drops per run. As I can see little other reason to farm Hardened Humps than for Nicholas, if you also take out the plants (4 + 1 boss), Abnormal Seed is also a Nicholas item worth saving.

Hardened Humps are a tough farm in any respect, expect lots of coin and salvage item drops... Gwynna Vive 01:03, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

The walkthrough I have written IS accurate and efficient. Because I have made turns to avoid the other species present in the area, specially against the Tengu groups. Realise that this route was described for "solo" farming. To me it was very efficient because the 1st run got me 7 Hardened Humps and the 2nd run got me 5 units, so 12 items in 2 fast runs was perfect for me, after all, I only need 10 for Nicholas.

In my experience the Ettins mobbed the Tengus, and I waited for the survivors of the initial battle to rally my way, as shown in the pictures.
Anybody who attempts to farm Trophies in Kryta with WiK active is a noob. See also: Feedback:User/Yoshida Keiji/Beyond Mode. Other alternative farming advices are always welcome, see also Guild Wars Wiki:Projects/Drop research. Sorry Yoshida, I was not bashing your route (though in reading my post, I can see how it could be taken that way). Many of us oldtimers are very capable of finding a decent method for collecting most anything we desire in the game all on our own. I would assume that none of us fitting that description would need to read up on how. Players with little experience however, rely on a group, often have poorly equipped characters, limited skillbar options, few professions at their disposal, and need the advice. These are the players we need to cater to if the game is to live on, especially for times like this, when Nicholas is visiting an area accessible fairly early in the game. In my experience, the first few kills in any zone drop nothing whatsoever. The first 2-3 Ettin mobs in your posted run are killed by Tengu in at least half the instances I've entered as well. In HM, they survive a bit better, however that makes for a greater challenge for a soloist, and HM isn't accessible for players who've not completed the campaign (and frankly not worth the bother for a few GotT's), so I offered up other methods which accomodate those concerns. I would think that your experience getting so many humps is quite exceptional. I, and most others I play Guildwars with, is quite different, with Ettins dropping hides, pauldrons and coins instead of humps. In fact, the only reason I visited here and made my post was because friends and guildies have been asking how to do your posted run or if there was a faster way of getting humps. You don't need to apologize, I didn't felt a bash nor played a defensive stance. I just said: "no". As for the inexperienced players, well... If you see 8 Tengus fighting other 8 Ettins...and somebody goes alone against 16... of course things will turn down. Since I did it with an Air Magic ele, I suspected that the traditional SoS rit with Destruction and Rupture Soul would handle himself as well. Tell the newbies to skip the initial battle and get the survivors only and continue until the described path ends.
