User:Ctarl/characters
For a german version of this page see gwchars.de.
This page may differ from most of the character pages on this wiki as it contains quite a bit of text, but I don't want to just bury the reader in facts he/she mostly doesn't care about anyway. Instead I want to give some info about the past of my characters, why I created them, what they mean to me and generally give them some kind of character of their own instead of reducing them to hero-tables or a list of titles. (Though I realize many might not care about the things I write here either ... :p)
Yarla Ctarl[edit]
Name origin: During the Beta due to lack of imagination called "C Tarl", as "Ctarl" had been my IGN for some time and I just couldn't think of any fore- or surname to match it. After chewing over a name for weeks I found or rather pieced together a forename from different names in an old RPG called "Das Schwarze Auge" (lit: The Black Eye, in english called The Dark Eye). So I renamed her at release.
She is/was my very first Guild Wars character, usually my main choice when playing the game and the only one I actively work towards titles with. |
Xu Klein[edit]
Name origin: The name was originally chosen as a (rather poor) joke on the tininess of the female monks. "Xu" in addition to sounding Asian/Chinese (corresponding with her face) can pronounced in German be interpreted or misheard as "zu" meaning "too" in English. So the full name would be: "xu" -> zu (German for "too") + klein (German for "short") = "Too Short". I never intended to continue playing her with this name after the beta but somehow I did anyway. My favorite toon back in the Prophecies days. When my necromancer got stuck at Thunderhead Keep in summer 2005 (well, who didn't?) I exclusively played her. I really loved the monk class the first ~6-8 months or so. I could use any build I wanted, stay relaxed in the back and heal the PUGs (which tended to die all to quickly most of the time I played my necomancer). But something in the game and its players changed around winter 2005. People became picky about what skills you had equipped and the enemy AI must have changed and some point, too. Playing a monk became increasingly stressful and all to ping-dependent. Suddenly it was all about how quickly you could click on party members and skill icons or number keys. I want to relax while playing a game, not be stressed out. And nowadays it's a pain to get some people to accept you as a monk when you don't run the "current" build. That's just not my idea of a good time. Even playing alone is out of the question (or at least isn't fun) due to the constantly decreasing hench/hero AI paired with increasing enemy AI. Bots and heroes are not even able to stay focused on specific enemies when the player himself is not an offensive profession character (and attacks the enemy himself). They run around like headless chickens ... (Even my hex-necro, who has to target multiple enemies all the time, has the same problems albeit to a lesser extend.). So, even though it pains me, I didn't really feel like playing her for a veeery long time :( |
Akame Yumiko[edit]
Name origin: As she is a Factions-born character I wanted to give her an Asian name. And since it's the only Asian language I know at least a bit about, her name became Japanese. In detail it means: aka (赤) = red, me (目) = eye, yumi (弓) = bow, ko (子) = child (a common female name ending). I know her eyes aren't red, but I didn't like the sound of akage (赤毛) = red hair. Her name is also written in the Japanese way, with the family name coming first. In reflection, I think I went wrong in trying to name her differently than my other characters. Looking at my character selection screen I don't like the name very much.
I created her because I got temporarily bored with my existing characters and back then barrage teams and trapping was highly popular. I didn't want to have to be the monk or necromancer all the time. But as it went, I never really played with her an she reached the Tombs (for which I initially created her) almost a year after her birth.

Myria Ctarl[edit]
Name origin: Not quite sure to be honest. I think the name appeared in The Dark Eye 3 PC game where I also got Yarla's name from. Prophecies tutorial dweller and Beer-collector. |
Liriel Ctarl[edit]
Name origin: Liriel Baenre daughter of the first House of Menzoberannzan (beware of MAJOR SPOILERS on wikipedia!).
Reincarnation of a mesmer called "Der Saft" (spur-of-the-moment naming like it happened with Xu) created in summer 2005. I deleted the first one around Factions release due to urgent need for a character slot and regretted it ever since. As Nightfall added more character slots to the game, I used the chance to re-roll my lost Mesmer and simultaneously get revenge for my unsuccessful try of a Survivor (Yumiko) by getting tier 3 ;p.
I'm still hesitant to play her, though, as I can't get myself to finally let her die. :/

Zahli Ctarl[edit]
Name origin: Random african name generator. I should have put more time into finding a good name for her. I don't like the name now and have dozens I would like to use but can't as I have left neither a character slot nor a class I would want to play. Even though it's my 2nd try to start an elementalist (the first one was a Prophecies character born back in winter 2005 and got as far as Lion's Arch) she's again become a candidate for deletion. Somehow I just can't get myself to like playing the class. |
Yvonnel Ctarl[edit]
Name origin: Yvonnel Baenre ruler and Matron Mother of the first House of Menzoberannzan. I wanted to use this name for a very long time. I just couldn't decide on a class. And since she's at least the 6th or 7th character bearing that name I'm not quite sure I definitely have. |
Xu Kurz[edit]
Name origin: Just a variation of my monk's "Xu Klein." I used "Kurz" for her since I planned to side with the Kurzick anyway and "kurz" is another german word for "short." So, you see, the joke is even worse than the one on my monk. Ritualists aren't even especially short. :P Carries crafting material, weapon upgrades and some useless junk I can't part with (like Banana Scythes or wintersday weaponry). |
Meine Eine[edit]
Name origin: That would take me too much time to explain -_-. It includes (very) old cartoons, Bugs Bunny and badly done german dubbing. She's the main storage for Yarla's countless armors but I already have to outsource some sets to other little used PvE characters like Zahli.
