Energy management skills and attributes - Are they disprop?[edit]

  • I have come to the somewhat surprising conclusion that ALL energy-management skills are disproportionally empowered by Heroic Refrain (refered to as "Disprop"). This includes from any skills or attributes (or even other sources i suppose). This is because the energy is the basis for all skills that you use. A great example of this is when you have a traditional discord build that you give you a player at low level. In this case, the build will likely be TERRIBLE because:
    • (1) While your skills are proportionally weaker to your lower attributes (e.g your Bone Minions are more or less exactly 3 times lower level, since MOST skills scale linearly with your attribute ranks), the ENERGY you have available is at the same time lower, because your soul reaping, as well as many energy management skill such as Signet of Lost Souls scale linearly with the attributes as well. This means that as your level increases, your skills are not just stronger, but possible to use more frequently, meaning that you have an EXPONENTIAL increase in power, even if the energy-management skills just scale linearly with the attributes!
    • (2) In addition, multiple energy-management skills actually do not scale linearly but EXPONENTIALLY with the attribute ranks. This is discussed below.
  • Previously I assumed that only certain energy management skills where disprop. For example, Energetic Was Lee Sa Energetic Was Lee Sa appears to be disproportionally affected, because under normal circumstances, you often have 7 Spawning Power or less, and in these cases, the skill grants no net energy. The initial impression is that this skill becomes exponentially valuable after this threshold, but this is clearly NOT the case, since it is just a linear increase in energy gain. As such, this skill is really no different from for example Signet of Lost Souls.
  • That said, i now see that ALL energy management skills are disprop. However, there is an important distinction to be made between skills that are EXPONENTIALLY disprop, and those who are not.
    • LINEAR DISPROP Soul Reaping and Signet of Lost Souls are examples of linear disprop; These elements give energy that is ENTIRELY linear to how much attribute points you spend. Even though they are linear, it is obvious that they are dispoportionally affected by attributes, because while the STRENGTH of your skills increases linearly with your attributes, the ENERGY COST does not, so for example a level 3 player cannot effecetively use Animate Bone Fiend (due to limited soul reaping) but a level 20 can do it easily.
    • EXPONENTIAL DISPROP - Skills and attributes that reduce energy cost by percentage is Exponential Disprop, e.g Expertise, Mysticism and Attuned Was Songkai. Taking the example of Attuned Was Songkai: It can be seen as a skill that GRANTS you 5-65% of the cost of spells & binding rituals. This energy depends on how much energy you you use, and the more energy you get from this skill, the more energy you can use, thus increasing the amount of energy you get returned. As a result, the skill is not just Disprop due to being a skill that grants energy (why this is disprop is described in the previous point), but the AMOUNT of energy you get back increases exponentially with increased attribute points.

What are some GENERAL features making a skill EXPONENTIALLY disprop?[edit]

  • Remember: A fundamental rule that I guess applies to ALL skills that are interesting for this purpose (perhaps for the ENTIRE DOCUMENT, is that you have a situation where the POWER of of a skill or attribute increases, and and the same time the AMOUNT OF TRIGGERS of that skill or attribute increases as well

Skills/Attributes where a reduction in energy cost OR energy gain on skill use SCALES with attribute[edit]

  • This applies to any percentage decrease
  • This ALSO applies to constant energy decreaces, such as Healer's Covenant, for the same reason as percentage decrease, because the more energy you save, the more frequently you can use the skill, thereby gaining more energy (See exceptions below though)
  • Examples where this applies (For more examples, see the actual list below):
  • Remember that skills such as the ones below are NOT disprop:
    • Glyph of Lesser Energy Glyph of Lesser Energy - Not exponental despite reducing energy cost because it only affects a FINITE amount of skills, and this finite amount is NOT increased by the attribute, unlike for example Glyph of Energy Glyph of Energy, where the amount of triggers IS increased.
    • Spirit Siphon Spirit Siphon - Can appear to be exponential since it is a percentage, however this percentage is of a finite/constant amount of energy of the spirit (41), so it is actually linear.
    • Skills like Channeling Channeling or Elemental Attunement Elemental Attunement are NOT exponential disprop despite effectively granting energy on spell cast (which IS increased exponentially by increased spell use), simply because the are not proportionally boosted by increased attributes at all. HOWEVER, these skills, along with ANY OTHER energy-granting skill could be considered INDIRECTLY Exponentially disprop if used in CONJUNCTION with an exponential skill. For example, Body Shot Body Shot is not by itself exponential disprop, but it becomes WAY more powerful when an exponential disprop effect - in this case Expertise - is active.

Effects granting energy while active, where the DURATION scales with attribute[edit]

  • Note that this has 2 ADDITIONAL requiremenets:
    • They must grant energy while active, unlike for example Arcane Conondrum
    • They must not be easily maintainable, unlike example Channeling, which is almost unaffected by increased attributes. HOWEVER, if the skill is useable on other allies, there is a difference. For example, Air of Enchantment Air of Enchantment CAN be considered Exponential Disprop because it can be maintained on several allies.
  • Example skill: Divine Spirit Divine Spirit. For more examples, see the actual list below.

In theory, Skills/Attributes where the INCREASE of DURATION of energy-related skills SCALES with attribute[edit]

  • While this is very clearly exponential disprop, I see very few options here. See the MAIN ARTICLE: Duration.
    • This does apply to Blessed Aura Blessed Aura since it there are several energy-management monk skills such as Divine Spirit Divine Spirit, but from the "Duration" page i see relatively few options.

Skills/Attributes that reduce the RECHARGE TIME of energy-related skills[edit]

  • E.g All mesmer spells that grant energy could be considered Exponental Disprop, because HR and other sources that increase all attributes, both increase the POWER of the skill, as well as the FREQUENCY due to Fast Casting reducing recharge time.

Skills of skills that are NOT EXPONENTIAL Disprop, but still particularly interesting[edit]

  • Energy Boon Energy Boon - REMINDER: in-depth discussions like this should be kept on the profession pages, not the main [energy storage] page Convenient because it has the ability to rapidly give energy to ALLIES. Note that despite being an enchantment, it is effective even when affected by Tranquility, because the energy gain is the big part of it. It also has GREAT synergy with QZ since that allows it to give energy much faster.
    • However for this purpose, it is worth considering Blood Ritual since it grants a similar amount of energy and is non-elite.

LIST of EXPONENTIAL disprop Skills & Attributes (energy management)[edit]

  • The LOGIC for why these skills are exponential disprop is included in the section above.

Skills that MAY SEEM to be exponential disprop, but are NOT[edit]

  • Spirit Siphon Spirit Siphon - Despite being percentage, it is only percentage of a consistent (41) spirit energy, so this is actualy Linear Disprop.

[COMPLETE] Skills/Attributes where a reduction in energy cost OR energy gain on skill use SCALES with attribute[edit]

  • Ether Renewal Ether Renewal is perhaps the greatest example of a skill that is exponentially empowered by HR:
    • Increased attributes mean that it becomes easier for you, as well as other party members, to use energy management skills to improve energy management. This increases the amount of spells you can cast, which in turn triggers Ether Renewal more.
    • Increased attributes increases the amount of health and energy gained every time this skill triggers.
  • Elemental Lord Elemental Lord - Increases the energy gain upon casting spells (2 energy at lvl 20)
  • Glyph of Energy Glyph of Energy - lasts for 4 spells when maxed, reducing them by 30 energy each.
  • Cultist's Fervor Cultist's Fervor - Interesting because of a constant energy reduction. Of course, necros already have great energy management, but this skill could potentially REMOVE the need for soul Reaping entirely (assuming the right skills are used).

Lower Prio
  • Expert Focus Expert Focus - however the skill sucks according to its page (because it applies before expertise).

[COMPLETE] Effects granting energy while active, where the DURATION scales with attribute (plus not easily maintainable)[edit]

  • According to the skills listed under Energy_management/table2, i find very few skills that match this description; most skills there granting energy while active, are easily maintained at rank 12 and higher.
  • Ether Renewal Ether Renewal - Golden skill for HR; however it has already been disussed elsewhere.
  • Weapon of Fury Weapon of Fury - While it IS trivial to maintain even at low ranks, remember it can be used on MULTIPLE targets, making it Exponential Disprop.
  • Monk Enchantments (Note that these can be extended further with Blessed Aura)

[COMPLETE] Skills/Attributes that where the INCREASE of DURATION of energy-related skills SCALES with attribute[edit]

  • NOTE that this section is ENTIRELY DEPENDANT on the previous section "Effects granting energy while active, where the DURATION scales with attribute". This means that there is only a single skill that fits the description of the current section:
  • Blessed Aura Blessed Aura
  • I strongly doubt there is anything else, based on the "Duration"-page.
