Firstly, that is a rule and also a definition. You don't look at a chair and ask "why is this a chair?", but since it's not right to leave you hangin', here is the "answer":
You know Distributivity? If not, it says c(a+b)=ca+cb . Now, let's make ourself an equation:
c=(-2), a=(-5), b=5
-2(-5+5)=
Now, we agree that there are two ways to solve this: One way is to solve the brackets and do it times two, and the other is to use distributivity. I'll start with the first one:
-2(-5+5)= -2*0 = 0
Since we know that our equation equals zero, it should be so if we distribute. Let's do so:
-2(-5+5)= 0
-2*(-5) +(-2)*5= 0
-2*-5+(-10)= 0
Now, what plus -10 equals 0?
10-10= 0
Here is another equation to solidify my "proof":
-4(-6+6) = -4*0 = 0
-4*(-6) +(-4)*6= 0
-4*(-6) +(-24) =0
24-24=0
