Note[edit]

"NOTE: 07/11/08 I have solo farmed the sickened animals on Minister Cho's estate and killed over 2200 animals. None dropped a skin.
Regardless, if anyone else tries to farm for these animal skins - be advised that they don't seem to drop as of this date."
Someone put this on the page itself, but imo it's better of @ the discussion part. (84.245.21.57 11:15, 13 August 2008 (UTC))

I've killed a whole bunch of animals myself too, about 500 I guess, and zero of these. WhyUser talk:Why Are We Fighting 04:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Linsey has said that according to the drop definitions files, Animal Hides should still drop...and they must have at some point long ago. Curious bug... Vili User talk:Vili 04:18, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Agreed, Vili. Eryops3 17:52, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

As of today, I've solo farmed this area with a multiple cast of characters (Assassin, Warrior, Elementalist, Monk, Ritualist,) and have YET to have an Animal Hide drop ANYPLACE on the island. Also, please note that Animal Hides apparently have NO known intrinsic value AND cannot? be salvaged (of course, that last conjecture is unproven, since no-one has been able to try to salvage any) Undouble 19:02, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
I also solo-farmed this mission today and aside from a single Golden Egg there was no single drop from sickened animals. Intended or not - except for their skills, these seem to behave like regular animals. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 18:56, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
This a rather ridiculous bug, animal hides can be traded for some nice lower level focuses, but since they don't drop, the focuses are merely a temptation. — Xyntho01:01, 04 July 2010 (UTC)
Equivalents to the collector items listed CAN be had, but the drops are extremely rare nightfall drops that can be modded to equivalent stats. An example is that I just got a Req. 5 Blood idol with +7 energy in Lahtenda bog. By adding a "Master of My Domain" inscription, this can be made to duplicate the Blood Knife focus listed as one of the collector items available. Do be warned, these drops are MUCH rarer than even greens and as such are crazy hard to get hold of. ----Ecks

Specify on the main page that they do NOT drop[edit]

They do not drop, people have been trying for over 3 years now and I haven't heard of anyone who got one as a drop, ever. Most people don't check the discussion at first, we just had a guild event with a treasure hunt and this was one of the item randomly selected as there was no mention of a bug or them not dropping on the main page. I can't think of a reason not to put a clear warning to players that they do not drop.

  • This information WAS posted on the main page and then removed - I posted it myself. I eventually farmed over 5000 sickened animals and none ever dropped. Yes, the information does belong on the main page or the page should be removed. As it stands, it appears that someone is actively involved in trying to get players to waste their time looking for these drops when they do not exist. Way too much of this type of information suppression happens on the Wiki information pages, causing players to waste countless hours.

Bug or not a bug[edit]

There are two competiting suggestions for how to present Animal Hides (an item that has never been seen in the game):

Version 1
"An Animal Hide is a trophy that was designed to drop from the Sickened animals in Minister Cho's Menagerie. However, they have never been seen in the game."
  • ANet created animal hides and the collector and, for reasons unknown to us, didn't implement them in the game. (Not a bug.) The collector, Xuwei Diyi, continues to be marked correctly as a bug (he serves no purpose in the game atm, requesting an unavailable item).
Version 2
"Animal Hides are trophies that were intended to drop from the Sickened animals in Minister Cho's Menagerie."
"Bug: They have never been observed to actually drop, which means that the collector Xuwei Diyi is useless.."
  • Both the collector and the hides are bugged.

They should be dropping, so the bug does fit here. But isn't the bug that sickened animals drop nothing at all? 24.197.253.243 03:42, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
"According to the lootdef files, they do drop." User_talk:Linsey_Murdock/Questions15
Linsey's exact words for reference. This looks compelling and I've updated the article accordingly.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 03:51, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Cool; the accidental evidence makes a better argument than any of my words without it could do. (For a spirited defence, I'd've just made analogies to better explain how I consider it. A locked door to a small room of game content but no key, or one of those WANTED signs saying that a boss dropped a great unique but it never did, or a quest required you to get an item that didn't exist, etc.) | 72 User 72 Truly Random.jpg | 18:00, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

My Theory: This is an in-joke reference by Anet. In the original Eye of the Beholder CRPG, the duneon contained portals that took you to another part of the dungeon. In order to activate the portal you needed to have a special object, the shapes of which lined the edges of the wall around the portal. If I recall correctly, there were eight shapes around the portal and all the matching items could be found in the dungeon, except one. Many a gamer spent months and even years looking for the eighth object before finally learning that it actually never existed in the game. I think this is Anet's tribute to that futile pursuit in EotB. HanokOdbrook 02:45, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Nicholas[edit]

why is this item listted on nicolas page of items?

Assuming that you're talking about User:Kanda/Nicholas#Items that have not been collected yet , thats a user page that hasn't really been updated in ages. (discontinued). I have however edited it. Chieftain Alex 15:13, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
