My last journies have taken me far from the mainlands to a small island chain seemingly disconnected from the world around it, a place halfway to everywhere in the middle of nowhere, that most simply refer to as the Battle Isles. It is a place where heroes of the greater world come to fight for personal honor and for the glory of their allies and comrades-in-arms-- and a place where only the greatest of those heroes are invited to join the Zaishen Order. It was during this leg of my travels that I was taken in by the lady Ami Tatsu Hanone-- Tatsu, to those who would call her friend-- and shown the way of the Zaishen, of the tournaments, and of the gladitorial battles. I must admit, there's something to the very concept of these battles... something almost primal in how the combatants react to one another. It wasn't unlike watching a game of chess brought to life-- but without pawns to sacrifice so immediately. Four combatants, tossed together at the whims of their Zaishen leaders, facing off against four similar combatants, studying each other so intently at first until that powerful moment in which all hell breaks loose... I now understand the look of glee and even awe on Tatsu's face when she returns from the arenas. |
