Watching my boyfriend playing in the Jade Sea somewhere and there were a group of 5 Oni. As he approached them they ran onto a bridge. He stood watching them for a while wondering why they ran away and noticed that they were making beckoning gestures, as if calling him forward. Is this a typical Oni animation or is it just for that specific group? Cause that's freaky as hell! And of course, it was a trap and 5 more Oni spawned on the other side of the bridge. - BeX 16:08, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Are those the Oni that drop Ungues of the Oni? If so then I think it is just that specific group that does it. --Rainith 16:10, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
He says he is in Rhea's Crater. I've never been that far into Luxon territory, I'm ashamed to say. They really creeped me out though. :o - BeX 16:13, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
(DOUBLE EDIT CONFLICT) Wow... yes, some enemy models do seem to have their own emotes, but I've never heard of them being used like that. Sounds like it was intended to be used like that, unless itw as a massive coincidence. I've always considered Oni to be the scariest creatures in the game, the way they just pop out of nowhere and massacre your party with their grey, tattered skin... *shudder* --Santax (talk · contribs) 16:14, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
We sat there for like 30 seconds watching them beckoning. It's something that's so eerie yet cool! Ugh I'm gonna have nightmares! - BeX 16:15, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Did you catch a screenshot? Maybe something should be added into the article? --Santax (talk · contribs) 16:20, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
I'll get a video of it sometime if somebody reminds me. :) - BeX 16:27, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Found that place. 5 Oni stood at the north-eastern end of the bridge doing /beckon... I approached them from southwest, after I killed them I went back over the bridge and another 6 Oni spawned - I had been at this place before, seems they spawn only if you cross the bridge from northeast to southwest. - MSorglos (talk|contrib) 19:07, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

(ri)I don't think it's unique to that group, it's just more obvious on them because there are several in the one spot and you have more time viewing them before aggroing. I tried popping one of the oni outside Tsumei Village and it looked like he was doing the animation too (he was facing the wrong way though). - BeX 13:51, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Eerie beckoning gestures?[edit]

It doesn't look like beckoning to me. I've always thought it looked much more like working a knot out of their shoulder. 67.164.201.47 06:24, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

not only rheas crater i was fighting oni in echovald forests ferndale on hm and they ran back and /beckon-ed when i chased them they led me through a bunch of dredge where i got ambushed and totally raped by the oni and dredge--Hubbard User Hubbard sig icon.png The Dervish 15:28, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
I highly doubt that the passive mode action of "beckoning" it really that. It is moving its more inmobile arm around to see if it works. Something humans do too. The arm it does it with isn't used as much in battle and always hangs next to the body making it run rather not demon like. -- Demonic Cobra User Demonic Cobra Cobra icon.png
Demons don't run. They tend to have wings. Paddymew 15:47, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Skills[edit]

In the description, the elite skill is mentioned without saying this skill is not given to Oni spawning on Sjing Jea Island in Normal Mode (in HM they do have those skills though). Who could be as good as to edit this into the article?

I don't see how Shadow Shroud is mentioned in any way. Vili User talk:Vili 20:31, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Sounds?[edit]

The article doesn't say it, but Oni definately make these creepy wailing cries when in battle, and also when they die. Should it be included or does a lot of enemies do that? Paddymew 09:05, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Update[edit]

These things are hell on wheels now. They hit for 120+ damage even with my slashing shield and blessed armor, which happens in exactly 1 second because ANet has no idea of how to balance anything, followed by another 240 damage with a knockdown. All the while the prot can do nothing thanks to Shadow Shroud -- yet they still go down as easily as everything else, because discord does more damage than HM SF bosses do. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 06:30, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

What makes you think this is because of a recent update? And what makes you think they inflict slashing damage? Paddymew 19:17, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, most daggers do. It could be piercing, yes, but the point is they were hitting me for 120 damage with 78 armor. The reason they're actually irritating now is because the recent update gave Jagged Strike an instant-activation time, which obviously chains with Fox Fangs. Because they have lol domoges and unlike Ranger interrupts, these have no aftercast, that's ~250 damage in 1 second, which is fine if it's just one; I've dealt with worse, but nowhere near as easy to counter when there's four. The obvious thing to do would be use shield of deflection () or guardian (♠), which does save party members a lot of the time, but the AI is kinda hard to predict sometimes. I'm not saying they're unbeatable, because I beat them all the time, I'm just saying you shouldn't have to groan every time one of these things pop out of nowhere because you know somebody is getting 15DP. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 19:28, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
78 armor targets shouldn't be in the front. Koss and Jora should. Paddymew 05:53, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Almost a year later I'd like to say that these guys don't usually appear at the front of your mob, they appear in the middle. Lolwho 00:13, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Their heads[edit]

You can't really see it in the picture on the page, but their faces really look like Abaddon. Kill one and pan the camera so that it's right up to their face. --Aldarik 19:42, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

about Trivia[edit]

While the Japanese Oni fall in the category "Kami" (and Kami is one way to express a god or goddess in Japanese), the term is much broader and used as a general description for any spirit-like being, be it a god, nature spirit, demon, the soul of a death human or otherwise. Oni would be better characterized as Youkai, or Obake, respektivly - these are the malevolent or outright malicious demons of Japanese folklore.

Split[edit]

I vote for a split of this article into three for multiple reasons:
1) The affiliation of the Jade Sea Oni is known to be the Nightmare Horde (at least it is in lore), while the others are unknown still.
2) The skill list is incomplete and completing it would lengthen the article even more (it's already very long).
3) The longest part of this article is the location and drops list - both of which can be reduced by the split.
4) We don't have an Oni race/creature type page and we very much should; I suggest making this page into such. -- Konig/talk 19:20, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

I got confused for a bit thinking you had forgotten that Shing Jea Oni were Lesser Oni, but yeah, there are a few "Oni" on Shing Jea. Don't they all use the same skill set though? I don't know if there's that much difference to split, one drop (two, including the green) and their locations? Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 19:46, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
The Shing Jea version has fewer skills, I believe. The Echovald and the Jade Sea may have the same skills though. But that wasn't a main point - my main points were the first and last; possibly different affiliations and we lack a general-oni page. -- Konig/talk 19:48, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I got Demonic Agility, Jagged Strike, Fox Fangs, Horns of the Ox, and Scorpion Wire from the Shing Jea version. What would #4 entail? Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 20:00, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
The same as every creature type page? General description of the oni+ a table of all generic hostile oni and their trophies (in such a much more clear manner than this page which acts as holding 3 of 5 kinds of oni atm). -- Konig/talk 20:09, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Oh, right, sorry. Sounds good to me. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 20:15, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I don't see the need for a split. If the Jade Sea Oni are Nightmare Horde, there's nothing to suggest that others won't be too, and having a long page is no reason for a split - see here. And Oni are demons, and can be listed as such, rather than as a separate Oni species. --Santax (talk · contribs) 21:09, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Mhenlo's article is about one thing though, this is about three. The Nightmare Horde is Kanaxai's army - I doubt that Kanaxai would have a reach all the way to Shing Jea Island, let alone the Echovald Forest, when he only causes insanity in those who get too close to him, and with jade sea/the deep oni being suspected by lore to be transformed humans (much like Margonites), and the lack of insane humans in other areas of oni I am finding it doubtful the non-jade sea oni follow kanaxai. Also for your reason for no need of a race page, see here for a race of demons who have their own page and is on the demon page. -- Konig/talk 21:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
IMO, these Onis have more in common than not. Leaving them on a single page allows people to see the similarities; splitting them to three implies more substantive differences. Those issues listed above can be solved without splitting.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 03:53, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) If not a split among the creatures, can we make this page a page for the race called "Oni" and make a new page for the creature called "Oni?" Akin to Abomination, Seer, and many more. -- Konig/talk 03:55, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Good idea. I don't see a problem with separating detailed lore (@Race) from detailed mechanics (@Creature). Obviously, there'll be some overlap, but not as much as between the three types of Oni. I also think that solution is more scalable — i.e. that it applies more easily across the wiki than splitting does.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 07:03, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure about moving this page to Oni (NPC). Why wouldn't we do Oni & Oni (race) with appropriate disambig notes? I would guess that people typing "oni" into the search box are looking for the foes, not the lore. I suppose we could have Oni redirect to Oni (NPC). Anyhow, perhaps we should get a few other points of view.
PS it might be worth considering how we should handle this for other races. Let's make sure we have a good balance between article categorization (better for editing) and ease-of-navigation (better for the larger number of non-contributing readers who won't post an opinion on this).  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:36, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I think the page would benefit from being split into Oni & Oni (Shing Jea Island). The Oni (race) page would seem clunky to me but I guess it would fit with the other pages, i.e. the oni lore should not be on the demon page.--File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 15:44, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I think the race information should be kept and expanded on Oni - monster info should be moved to other pages. Thus, we have it akin to all other races with race-named creatures. But then we have an issue of what to call the level 28 Oni - as adding (NPC) wouldn't really work, nor would (Jade Sea) or (Echovald Forest) unless we split the monster info into three. -- Konig/talk 16:11, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Spawns[edit]

I say we should get pics of known spawn/popup locations for the different areas. If this is agreed on, I'll start them - Stimpson J Kat 02:10, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm not done, but I figured I might as well add the map for where I'm farmin. Oni Spawns - can we add it to the page or no? - Stimpson J Kat 18:18, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) May I note that this is practically impossible to do without a lot of pictures? They spawn in about every zone that isn't in Kaineng City or the western side of Shing Jea Island. Including missions (but not competative missions). As such, you'd effectively need 18 maps. -- Konig/talk 20:43, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

which is why I have it on a seperate page, I plan on having it separated by region with a show/hide button... which I can't get working right atm... - Stimpson J Kat 21:39, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
With it on a separate page, we can just link to it.. and if I have to, I'll have it separated by region on different subpages under it. - Stimpson J Kat 21:46, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
That would be foolhardy imo. If we intent to have a fully documented group of maps showing the spawns, then we'll simply use a gallery section on the page. -- Konig/talk 22:06, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
Well... this is for reference, and if anyone decides to make something with it... they're more than welcome to - Stimpson J Kat 22:16, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
