too hard[edit]

WAY TOO HARD!!! Level 17 Nec; 12 Blood 10 Death 6 Soul cannot complete w/o help of Fire Imp summon! Lvl 15 Hammer Grawls spamming Healing Sig and Counter Blow continuously heal & KD, Lvl15 Shaman Spamming Orison & Healing Breeze reinforcing ea other. Tried this multiple times. The grps of Shaman take several minutes to kill until their energy has fallen off enough to finally kill one. If they tag team the fire imp he's dead then I have to rezone or wait an HOUR to TRY again. IMO Pre should not be unsolo'able. ANet please adjust the difficulty here. Challenging is fine but this hard is aggravating, not fun. -Haxa

solod with my lvl 16 ele, he wasnt at the location on the map pic and he died very quick, 15 second fight at the most, imo a bit boring compared to yesterdays  :) Spark-TBa 17:04, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
got him with a level 17 nec (death at 12 not like your 10) also either take a partner or the imp with you, nobody said they are 100% soloquests. maybe a respawn would have helped too since the three times I did this quest he always spawned in the western grawl field so I could gather my 6-8 minions before going for the boss.[[109.130.50.168 03:17, 5 March 2011 (UTC)]]

-Maybe getting a good firestorm in at the beginning and then spamming flare you can. Plus you can inflict Blind. Doesn't work that way for a Nec.

so the 7 minions you can easilly get from the lvl 1 grawl around him dont effect him too much? can i ask what secondary you have?Spark-TBa 17:53, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

--- Minions help, if they're available. Stone Elemental's however, do not leave corpses to exploit. Plus the 1 or two you may get are killed nearly instantly by Symbol of Wrath, Banish, or Bane sig by Shaman. I appreciate your comments however, please understand the Nec & Ele playstyles are very different. & to answer your other question; no, I don't think you should be forced to pick a 2nd in Pre until you want to go post. A big challenge with this quest as a Nec is that Nec skills all cost 10 energy and have some casting + at least 5 sec recharge time, Vamp Gaze, Dthly Swarm, L Siphon. Without things dying Energy mgmt is tough. Again, Nec does not work like an Ele where you can spam Flare for a net cost of 4 E with a pool of about 80 E and Glyph of Lesser E. You also have Lightning Jav which you can 'rupt with. -Haxa

the only reason i asked what secondary you had was to see if i could help with a skill bar, flare i might have to add is 5 not 4 energy, ive never had 80e in pre, and your putting your point across as necro only, you have secondary skills make the most of them, and pls could you sign and edit wiki properly pls.Spark-TBa 18:25, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

I beat this quest alone(no fire imp) on my lvl 12 Warrior/Ranger with a lvl 11 pet, my pet distracted the 2, lvl 8, hammer grawls and i took out the monk with my sword (using server artry and gash with a char sword) before my pet died i had killed the boss. Sadly the 2 grawls killed me, I took revenge and killed them after :) .Tycars125 20:44, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

If the other quests are like this, it'll be easier and quicker to death level.. I tried doing this as a lvl 20 Ranger (admitted I don't have a pet), and there was absolutely NO WAY I was even getting the boss to 50% health. The aggro range on the foes is astronomical.. I hit a grawl, and his partner Shaman ran in from 3 aggro bubbles away to heal him, and then knocked me down, with Bane, and the grawl I hit then chained 2 more knockdowns.. and that was BEFORE I got to the boss, who for me was lvl 18 and spamming heals like energy wasn't a problem, all the while his *2* (healing signet equipped) friends were KD'ing me every 2-3 seconds. Not funny, not right and not doing this quest. 86.17.72.80 21:22, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
The fights are highly variable depending on spawns. You can find Utini with and without nearby healers. Sometimes, he spawns close to 1-2 other groups; sometimes not. Rezone until you like the odds better. Also, the fights are much easier at lower levels. (And btw, you are a ranger without a pet in pre?)  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 21:26, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
It goes without saying (I believe) that one should always lure everything in the vicinity of a boss away and dispatch it first, or else lure the boss and its entourage away from all other foes before beginning the fight. If people aren't doing that, well, they have only themselves to blame for deliberately stacking the odds against success. Morgaine 21:57, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
Maybe they set the difficulty level with the hopes that people would not try to solo all the quests and instead do them with a friend or other party member. I know, it's a shocking suggestion.  :) Ailina 00:34, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Usually they say in the developer notes if they are trying to encourage a particular behavior. I suspect in this case they wanted to make the foes tougher (not just higher leveled) as the character gained levels.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 00:53, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Can't help but laugh at the fact that some people are finding the new quests 'solo-unfriendly'. IMO Pre-residents have grown too complacent with most enemies that die with a few wand hits and worse: have probably never seriously made use of the 2 man team except for res sig and 'gatemonkey' business. Only 3 classes have any real chance of solo (Mes/Ele/War), the other 3 WILL have to team. Ailina has the right idea. Even not picking a pernament 2ndry, a ranger pet would greatly improve survival chances (better pet gets KD than you). Anet have done good to promote team adventuring activity with these quests. Even the survivor title is now possible and perhaps even more prestigious in Presear than LDoA. Those who still want it easy will never see presear survivor anytime soon (and possibly never see the reduction in their powerbill by NOT leaving their computers ON for hours to deathlevel for experience). -Wrei110.175.241.56 12:45, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

It was indeed quite difficult the first try but you just have to abuse the AI. I'm a level 20 ranger/warrior (with a pet) and I could actually out DPS wupwup on his own you just have to pick off the other two warriors 1 by 1, break aggro inbetween. Just try catch their heal sig with either hammer bash(if you're secondary warrior) or time your point blank shot on it for big damage. And outside that ofcourse make sure you are on high ground so you can actually hit from outside spell range, making wupwup cast all his stuff on your pet. Hope this helps. 88.159.234.111 16:31, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Agreed, the difficulty is exceptional if your DPS is on the low side. This quest isn't even remotely soloable on a Mo/R level 15 with pet and no fire imp. This character has easily handled all prior Langmar quests, and is very experienced in tactical play, running backwards to spread foes and make best use of terrain obstacles, like we used to have to do in the hard old days of Profecies before heroes existed. But the combination of grawl's Healing Signet and shaman's Orison + Healing Breeze simply can't be out-damaged by smiting skills + pet. A single level-11 grawl on its own can only just be killed, after a 5-8 minutes fight ... that's how good their Healing Signet is (or how poor smiting is when you have to spread points between Smiting and Healing Prayers). But put level-11 grawl and level-11 shaman together and the possibility of killing either evaporates for this character. Add more of one or the other and this quest goes far beyond impossible for a level 15 Mo/R. In the absence of interrupts or knockdowns (sadly Bane Signet won't knockdown during Healing Signet), the numbers for DPS and healing simply don't permit success here. Because foe healing is not marginal but absolutely way off the scale, I suspect that ArenaNet has specifically intended that this particular quest be non-soloable for some professions. Morgaine 17:10, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

I have other perma-Pre's too, some of them high DPS, and I expect this quest to be soloable for them. I'll report back later in the day after some other Zaishen stuff that needs doing first. Morgaine 17:22, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
  • On my level 16 W/R swordsman with pet (5 Beast Mastery), it was quite easy. The spawn had Utini accompanied by two grawl, which I killed first -- his healing can't keep up with Warrior DPS. There isn't much to say about it, other than that you have to use your Healing Signet in between knockdowns from the grawl, and to run away occasionally if the second grawl's knockdown gets you. (Although this account has a fire imp available, I didn't use the imp for this test.) In summary, it's just a matter of DPS. My monk failed to solo it only because smiting DPS is so poor in Pre while grawl healing is so powerful. Morgaine 21:00, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
  • On my level 16 E/N, Utini and all other grawl just turned into cinder under Firestorm while the life-steal skills kept me at full health. There's really nothing else to be said, as eles are so powerful in Pre. (Again, no fire imp was used for this test, even though I have it available.) Morgaine 21:41, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
  • In conclusion, this quest is easily soloable, but not by low-DPS professions or combos. Morgaine 21:41, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

One could always team/hire a low lvl zone monkey (lv10-12) to lower enemy spawn levels to make this easier. Or find a mesmer to help (smart ones can solo even this at lvl20 spawns, takes only 5mins in my case)-Wrei110.175.241.56 17:32, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

I like this idea. I quite often fail at this (I don't know why cos I'm a w/r...), so I'd quite like to just finish the quest for the 1k exp :D FardaleUser Kraal Sig.pngFeedback

location[edit]

Not at location, i found him a few hundred meters NW

Might possibly mean there are different spawn points then. It would make sense as anet wouldn't want the boss to be too farmable. Obelisk The Knight 17:53, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
3 people from my guild found him in 3 dif placesSpark-TBa 17:54, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
[1] Where I found him, comming from Barradin Estate Anna Sophia 17:51, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
I covered the entire green hills,he never spawned. I hate these new quests. Ramei Arashi 17:59, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
If his spawn location is truly random and if he can spawn close to a portal between zones, simply rezone until he shows (AKA using Kersh's facet location trick)  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:09, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Seems to always spawn in that South-East corner of Green Hills County around the side-ways Heart shaped Plateau near the Stone Elementals. Done the quest twice and was around that area both times. Druakian 20:11, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
I've done it several times; he does not always spawn there. From the estate,
  • if you encounter a grawl near the second bridge, he spawns someplace else.
  • if you don't find a grawl in that area, he will spawn near the circus tents.
  • the hench that spawn with him vary; I found it much easier to tackle him if there were no other healers with him.
 — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:26, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
All of the pre-Searing quests have random spawns. The Annihilation ones are just a general area randomness due to the amount and the size of explorables. Don't recall how many spawns each quest has but there's multiple - this was done to make them different each time you go through so it's less repetitive than say, a zaishen bounty. -- Konig/talk 03:43, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

grawl level[edit]

grawl level varies and it's not 11, in my case grawls were lvl 15 (forgot to sign)Thedukesd 20:33, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Grawls appeared as level 8 for my level 13 character.. -- Joe Canadian 04:31, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Then jumped to lvl 11's after I hit 14.. -- Joe Canadian 07:15, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Trivia[edit]

I added some trivia. I lol'd when the boss cried out "Utini!". Thought that should be on the page ;) Anet sure loves Star Wars :D Sjeng talk 09:24, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

After disposing of Utini quickly (ranged), a normal hammer grawl from the boss mob cried out "Utini!" instead. 217.123.20.8 17:14, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Level scaling research[edit]

The note saying their level is highest player's - 3 looks very incorrect from what I have seen. It seems more like the whole quest just has 3 scales depending on player level as follows:

  • Player L10-13 = Grawl L8/Boss L9
  • Player L14-16 = Grawl L11/Boss L14
  • Player L17-20 = Grawl L15/Boss L18

I may be off by a level, but you get what I mean.. User ***EAGLEMUT*** Signature.png ***EAGLEMUT*** TALK 13:22, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Love this one[edit]

Did this the first time today and found it quite enjoyable. There are random Grawl groups all over the district, not just the few spots in the map. Seems this would be a good one to leave in the quest list for those days I head out this way to farm necklaces or lodestones. Utini, you may have a temporary reprieve.

Yeah, you have to wander around Green Hills to find 'em, but it's not near as annoying as Regent Valley, and the Grawl don't hit me with flare. 66.170.212.17 17:41, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

- This may be a good quest to farm for high damage proffesions, but for some it's quite literally impossible to kill the 2x Grawl Shaman groups.

Phrasing correction[edit]

Corrected the phrasing in the wiki page. It reads that there is more than one boss named Utini, yet elsewhere in the page, it says there is only one to kill, at one random location. 69.182.175.212 06:24, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Dialogue[edit]

Today while going through this quest, when I got near to Utini Wupwup a dialogue box appeared of him saying, "UTINI!" I don't remember this happening before and it isn't on the page. Anyone know if it's glitched or something? Eellis (talk) 23:39, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

This is standard and should always occur. It can/should be added to the page if it's not there, too. - Infinite - talk 23:54, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
