Salvage research

Hi, I noticed you adding many salvage research data. I suggest we slightly alter the table and add a column for item rarity or value to give a hint how "good" an item must be to get good salvage. Also we could add some sign for highly salvageable. - MSorglos 11:44, 1 May 2007 (EDT)

I think the item rarity or value would only apply to weapons or singularly named salvage items that drop from different creatures (like Necrid Robes). In the latter case it should be easy to see which item the salvage is from, because there would be a huge difference in the amount of materials gotten (except for rares). Most salvage items drop only in a limited range of armor rating and from creatures with a limited range of levels, so it wouldn't apply there.
We can definitely add a "highly salvageable" column or some sort of identifier for it. For the weapons I think it would be best if the researcher noted the value only in unusual cases, for instance, salvaging a low level weapon that can be also obtained with higher damage.
Unfortunately I've got around 500 screenshots of salvage research and I didn't take pictures of the armor rating before I salvaged it, or whether it was highly or normally salvageable for weapons. Hopefully in the case of the salvage items it wont matter, because most of them will salvage similarly enough and can't be highly salvaged (I don't think item rarity affects the salvage results as I've salvaged gold armors before after extracting runes and not noticed anything different). In the case of weapons, if the salvage amount is unusually high compared to other peoples' data then you can assume it was highly salvageable, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to salvage it.
I'm going to continue as I was before, and if anyone gets data with those added values they can modify the pages like we are when adding the mode column, etc. - BeX 11:55, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
Just one example: Talk:Margonite_Armor - I don't know weather salvage result is caused by salvaging purple rune (they were worthless, so I let them in). Don't know wether sell value is better for differentation, but I will continue with rarity and extra note for high salvageable. I think that high salvage will be noticeable in values, for rarity I don't know but will observe. Happy editing :) - MSorglos 12:07, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
That is a rather large difference. From now on I'll make sure to record value, rarity and AR. Maybe also whether the rune is left in or not. I'll modify the tables with the added data when I have it, and if it looks worthwhile people can follow suit. :) - BeX 12:12, 1 May 2007 (EDT)
This likely won't be useful, but I started a salvaging guide back in June 2005. I kept pretty detailed notes. I've dug it up from my archives and posted it at User:Tanaric/Salvage. I don't have individual pulls, like the tables you add do, but I kept notes on the ranges of goods I got from each item and what kit I was using. —Tanaric 13:55, 1 May 2007 (EDT)

It's me again. Sorry for using lvl 1 headings. I thought it could be a good idea to separate drop&salvage research from the rest of the talk. Perhaps we could use lvl 2 and 3 headings for that? Also we should adjust salvage research tables. I started to use the columns Material||Amount||Rarity||AR (if appropriate)||value||Signature but noticed you adding only one column for all properties. - MSorglos 04:59, 6 May 2007 (EDT)

I don't think it really matters about separating them - they're already under a subheading anyway. And now that the talk bit is at the bottom, anyone who doesnt use the add section link can either edit that bit or add to the end of the page anyway. And the properties thing was me being rushed. Currently levelling my survivor and trying to note everything down as quickly as possible when we reach towns hehe. Feel free to reformat it - at the moment most of the pages are using different column headings anyway. - BeX 07:01, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
Okay, then I'll remove my extra headings when I come across that pages again. I also will reformat your notes when on that page (as I do it on every page I find to make them look more equal). Good luck with your survivor, 2 of my chars died before they got that title (and I did not want to recreate them a I have done before). One (paragon) is still waiting at the starting line, but I don't have time and lust to play it. - MSorglos 07:11, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
It's up to you which way to format it, when the pages already have the correct column headings I've been using them. I could just never remember which order they are meant to be in. So properties was my lazy, lazy solution. :P
Thanks for the goodluck. I actually have several characters with survivor. It's very easy to get, especially in Cantha, but this time I'm aiming for rank 3. I just passed the halfway mark. :) - BeX 07:15, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
(Edit conflict)Do you think identifying items will change much on salvage result? I know that it makes a price go up 1 or 2 Gold, but I think that does not really influence salvage. If you think so (and let me know that) I'll change the tables to add an extra column for identify status.
My ritualist died after survivor 1 - somewhere around Kaineng while I thought I logged out fast enough... noticed it later when XP for Survivor did not raise. - MSorglos 07:18, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
Identifying high level items can double the value in some cases. I figured if we were noting value we should specify which value it is, to avoid confusion. - BeX 07:23, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
Okay, that'll go into value column as "HS" (high salvage) and "sale" (improved trade value) are already noted in that column. I did not know that there are so high price changes from identifying. - MSorglos 07:27, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
Especially caster weapons. You make a lot more money from identifying whites, but usually only ones from lvl 20 (and above) creatures. - BeX 07:37, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
Offtopic: Go BeXoR, Go BeXoR, :). Rank 3 Survivor is tough, but not that tough, I recommend capping as many elites as you can :) Good luck. --Indecision 08:21, 6 May 2007 (EDT)
^_^ Wasn't even rank 1 on Friday. Got over 40 elites now. Thank god for this weekend I say. Expensive though. >_< - BeX 11:25, 6 May 2007 (EDT)

Grey component shots

Heya Bexor! You and Anja should check out this topic and let me know what you guys think (since you two are the main armor gals around here) :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:44, 1 May 2007 (EDT)

Mc Meaties strikes again! - BeX 07:48, 9 May 2007 (EDT)
This seems to be an appropriate enough place for talking about your user page pic. Here is a simple way for you to be a real Ninja. Enjoy. — Gares 08:55, 9 May 2007 (EDT)
Ya, but real ninjas run through office buildings on fire. ;D - BeX 09:04, 9 May 2007 (EDT)

DAW Contest

I was just wondering.. Which weapon entry was yours? *prod* ~ BlackGeneral File:Blackgeneralsig3.png 02:09, 13 May 2007 (EDT)

I was only a finalist so it's not on the website. :P - BeX 03:00, 13 May 2007 (EDT)
Aww... thats too bad. I was thinking about entering myself, but I knew I didn't stand a chance agaisnt those guys :P ~ BlackGeneral File:Blackgeneralsig3.png 03:10, 13 May 2007 (EDT)
If I had known they'd get so many entries and of such high calibre I think I would have spent more time on mine. :P [1] [2] - BeX 03:30, 13 May 2007 (EDT)
Congratulations to being a finalist :) - anja talk (contribs) 05:11, 13 May 2007 (EDT)
Yes, well done Bex! Even to get to the finalists list is quite the achievement :) Hats off! User Fox.jpg Fox (talk|contribs) 05:58, 18 May 2007 (EDT)
Thank you both. :) - BeX 06:34, 18 May 2007 (EDT)
I was just posting a note below and added a P.S. to congratulate you, but then I noticed this, so let me add my 'gratz for a job well done! --Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:02, 21 May 2007 (EDT)
TYVM Gaile. :) It is an incredible honour for me to be recognised among so many amazing artists!! - BeX 02:29, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

Merchant location

Is it really necessary to have a location map for the merchants in outposts/towns? Maath for example. I don't think he's that hard to find. - anja talk (contribs) 08:38, 14 May 2007 (EDT)

I dunno, I'm just copy and pasting a pre-made template. Dirigible made maps for all the artisans, and there are maps for other NPC that are inside towns. - BeX 08:40, 14 May 2007 (EDT)
Oh, ok. I just find it funny ;) - anja talk (contribs) 08:50, 14 May 2007 (EDT)
What about the equipped weapon images? :/ There is no need for them to be full body shots. :( I guess everyone here wants to just go that extra mile. There's nothing specifically about adding maps in the formatting guide so I'll leave it up to whoever makes them to decide whether or not to leave it in. Meanwhile, if anything does get uploaded it'll be named right and have the correct caption! - BeX 08:52, 14 May 2007 (EDT)
I see your point. And I love that it will have correct names, really. Just continue doing what you do, it's more important to have the merchant pages than to know if the map should be there or not :P - anja talk (contribs) 13:21, 14 May 2007 (EDT)
I did those maps for the Kaineng and Seitung artisans simply for completeness' sake and because there were only two of them. I do agree that they are kinda useless and not needed, though. Even more so when considering merchant articles, the majority of whom are in outposts/towns. --Dirigible 17:29, 14 May 2007 (EDT)
Okay, I'll stop adding the map unless they're outside. A note should be added to the NPC formatting about it, because I am sure I've seen other town dwelling NPC articles with maps. - BeX 00:08, 15 May 2007 (EDT)

Was it you who... ?

Bex, was it you who offered to help me with my mini pics? I've been thinking about having them cut out, so that as I get a new one I don't have to redo the whole bar, but I cannot find the initial offer, and that's why I'm wondering if you were the offerer. Thanks! --Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:01, 21 May 2007 (EDT)

If you need any graphics help just send me the files and instructions to bexor (dot) wiki (at) gmail (dot) com. I have Photoshop CS2 so I should be able to open most files. :) - BeX 02:28, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

Elonian Leather Square

Why are you changing linking from Elonian Leather Square to the redirect page instead? It doesn't reduce the "What links here" list (as you said in an edit summary) at all, just puts them nested under Elonian Leather instead. I thought it was convenient to get to the correct page at once, when we are typing out a piped link anyway, instead of going by the redirect. - anja talk (contribs) 08:47, 22 May 2007 (EDT)

When I was doing the list of armors on the material pages, most of them use the redirect and they are all grouped together, conveniently. Some pages linked both to the redirect and the normal page, so changing the link got rid of the second occurence. And it was determined that using a redirect has next to no difference than just linking to the regular page anyway. - BeX 21:57, 22 May 2007 (EDT)
Unless I'm mistaken, we allow redirects for convenience in searching -- they're not generally designed to be linked to in articles, especially when direct links already exist. —Tanaric 00:29, 23 May 2007 (EDT)
I see your point with grouping them together. What I don't see is the reason to edit a page just for that small change :P As Biro said, editing a page is far bigger than performing a redirect, or following a link I guess.
Tanaric, in the armor articles in general we link to redirects a whole lot, because it makes the tables much easier to read when editing. Why I questioned this one, was because we were already using a piped link, so it was already long. - anja talk (contribs) 01:02, 23 May 2007 (EDT)
There are dozens of pages I didn't edit, the two or three I did edit were because they linked to both the redirect AND the article, which for consistency I wanted to consolidate. It made making the list of armor much simpler as well. And as for editing being more work on the server, I doubt that my three edits would make that much difference when there are people that don't know how to use the preview button. - BeX 05:39, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Images for deletion

Heya Bex,

Could you explain what your delete summaries mean for the images you tagged? I'm not involved with the requisite projects and thus don't understand why they need to go. Thanks!

Tanaric 03:57, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Which ones in particular? If it's the miniature ones, it's just because the renders were uploaded using the default filename which is meant to be an inventory icon. I resaved them as jpgs and uploaded them under the default render filename. Smurf had uploaded some icons under different names, but they are all moved to the correct default filename for the item infobox. - BeX 04:00, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
Good enough for me, thanks! —Tanaric 04:03, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Armor bonus infobox

I'm thinking we might remove that box totally. What's the purpose of it now? I think even Fow armor has changed, there is no indication that it has not changed. Might have to take a trip this weekend :P But I think we can remove the bonus box, everything seems to use Insignia now. - anja talk (contribs) 13:30, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

I was thinking we should switch over to using the item infobox, and ask for them to add a special parameter for us. - BeX 01:22, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, armor bonus infobox was wrong >< Armor bonus box on the art pages. It seems quite unnecessary to have a box to say "This armor uses only insignia". That can be stated in the desciption instead, which it already is in most cases. - anja talk (contribs) 07:57, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
I think the information should probably be moved to the infobox, because it is still helpful to know whether you can get attribute headgear in PvP, etc, and if the armor is collector armor then it would be basic only if max AR. - BeX 11:03, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
Yea, I think it would be better to merge it into description and infobox, because that small box looks a bit ridiculus (sp?) at the moment. - anja talk (contribs) 11:09, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

The mesmer flex...

Putting the note in the wrong date is better than not putting the note. All the people I know only noticed the change after this past update. I think it's more important to tell people with female mesmers that their emote changed than to "not" put the info in the wrong date. If you have concerte recollection of which update this was associated with, feel free to move the note to the proper game update. --Karlos 21:02, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey, that's a nicer way of saying pedant and I'm totes cool with that. ;D - BeX 16:58, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
I suppose while we're nitpicking - you might want to take a peek at GWW:SIGN - your sig is supposed to have a link to at least one of either your userpage or your talk page in it. I'm sure that was just an oversight, but I figured a friendly reminder couldn't hurt. :) Aiiane-a.gif (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 03:57, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
I know, if you check you'll see it's a link to my talk page. :P - BeX 03:58, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
Hmm, it's not showing up as a clickable link for me (even though I see the apparent code for the link in the wikitext). Doublecheck the coding? (edit: hmm, even if I link it myself - User talk:BeXoR - it doesn't show as clickable, just bold text. Very odd.) Aiiane-a.gif (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 04:20, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
A link to an article when you're on that article already is rendered as bold text. On any other talk page, Bex's sig will link here. —Tanaric 04:29, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm an idiot and realized that about an hour after I posted the above, can you tell I was tired yesterday afternoon? >.< Aiiane-a.gif (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 20:20, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Elite Cultist?

Is it "Cultist" or "Elite Cultist"? According to the Game updates/20070524 notes, "Cultist's" was renamed to Cultist. But I noticed you moved from "Cultist's" to "Cultist" and then to "Elite Cultist". -- ab.er.rant sig 07:23, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

It's Elite Cultist, looking at it now -FireFox File:Firefoxav.png 07:32, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Some of the notes were added incorrectly by Gordon. - BeX 07:37, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Starter armor

I'm not too sure on starter armor. Are the starter armor still called "Initiate's", etc. or have they all been renamed to "Ascalon"? Also, can insignia be applied on starter armor? Which would make the starter armor for both Proph and Factions the same right? Maybe I should just leave the "<prof>_<skin>_armor" articles alone since I'm not sure about the description there. -- ab.er.rant sig 07:29, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

So far, I haven't noticed any change in starter armor names, and I can easily try if they accept insignia. Imo, it's better if you do what you do now, as you seem to assume just as I do things some haven't changed. I'm not checking every little detail ;) Things can be corrected later anyway. - anja talk (contribs) 07:45, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Edit: I will go and check starter armor right now. - anja talk (contribs) 07:46, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Page Size check

Is there any way to check the page size other than saving it with the browser...? MithranArkanere 12:21, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

I know there are utilities out there that can do it, but I am not sure where to get them from. I'm fairly sure they were mentioned in the discussion of the policy page, but looking through the archive I can't spot it. As for your page, I doubt it would be over the limit, seeing as you have next to no images. I think someone said a normal user page with just text is probaby around 10-20kb though, and the normal wiki assets like the logo and background aren't counted. Anyway, now that you've changed the scroll length to the right size, your page should be fine. Thanks for that! - BeX 12:59, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
