A suggestion for people posting here

I would like to ask for some common sense when posting on Linsey's page. We all know she is in crunch time for the April update, so can we please limit our posts to short simple questions that she MIGHT have a chance to answer? Writing walls of text means her having to read walls of text, which she just isn't going to do atm due to her time constraints. If you feel the absolute need to write a wall, do it in your space and then just add a link to it here. Her page is growing exponentially again and will soon reach the point where it needs to be locked again for her sanity, not to mention to keep it from breaking. She has gone out of her way to try to be responsive and respectful of the community, can't we do the same for her? --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 00:18, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I was under impression that everything here was on a "read as she gets to it" basis, so there isn't much difference in it being posted today or on May 1st. Creating pages and linking them here will create split discussions in both places, and is only advised if the suggestion really is pretty large. But you are right, the Gwen Lore topic is like a fifth of this page by itself. What you can do is split it up into 2 or 3 pages, or semi-archive the top 2/3 of it as "topics still to be addressed" to reduce size of THIS page until Linsey has a chance to handle it herself. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 00:32, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
The problem with that is that as it gets so massive (currently 200k when Media Wiki recommends not exceeding 32k) it starts to become more and more difficult to access/edit. Since you know she isn't going to get to it right away, writing it up in your userspace, and linking it here will allow her to read it when she has a chance, yet keep her page small enough that people can continue to post, and the page won't have to be locked down again. If the discussion is limited to the talk page of the associate page in your userspace, there will be no split discussions. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 00:38, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
I'd rather not get in the position of having 2 or 3 pages of text piled up to read through and respond to while people continue to pile up more and more pages of text to read and respond to. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 00:40, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Lock it down again. Seriously. Makes some ppl unhappy, but u need a breather. 201.6.64.49 01:19, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
I second that, 216kb and exploding faster by the day, you need it Linsey. — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 01:21, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
I would rather see people using their userspace and just linking here (which is what Linsey was trying to say, rather than creating even more holding tanks). That way people can still post and discuss, and Linsey can read at her leisure. Her temp archive is still full from last time. I think she has proven she will respond in your userspace when she has time. However, if the walls of text continue here it will have to be locked down again, and then we will have another 3 months of no contact. It's up to the people posting to just use some common sense. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 01:54, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
i thought the hole point of the holding tank was so she could put questions that have ran there coarse via disscuion like a lot of the topics have on this page already. but still come up with an answer to them. + not everyone wants to make a wiki account. me being one of thous people i already have a zillion accounts all with different passwords. its annoying to sit there and try and remember my passwords and some i cant save because they change to frequently, and havening just one password is an unwise and unsafe thing because if that password gets compermized then everything has been. also wyn last i checked you don't work for anet so please stop acting like you do, and your also not linsey's keeper.75.165.115.205 02:01, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
QQ... edit conflict... QQ... Linsey doesn't give a crap about your passwords...
How about making a rule that ONLY LINSEY can answer posted questions, unless the player answering can quote a dev note, FAQ or other "official" resource answering the question asked, or you have a constructive enriching addition to the initial question that relates to the SAME TOPIC. If Linsey's response was somehow unsatisfactory, THEN other users can provide more feedback or ideas on the topic. Afterall, this is Linsey's talkpage and ultimately all questions are directed at her and are not asking for opinions of others who don't even know what they're talking about half the time. So far this almost seems like a public forum where the topics blow up long before Linsey gets to even see them. This rule will remove all these pointless fights about whose ritualist is better than the other in the Spawning Power topic, or the creative novels about Gwen's character, etc. etc. Or you could also actually make a forum that can discuss anything posted on this page until your eyeballs bleed, but leave Linsey to respond to the first post of each new topic HERE. That way, there are short questions and answers on this page, and any related discussions on the forum are not Linsey's headache to clean up. Just a thought. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 02:06, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm not Linsey's keeper, but I am her friend, and am trying to keep what happened to Izzy on this wiki from happening to her. If you don't want to make an account, that's your choice, and you can continue to post here until her page gets so large it has to be locked down, and then NO ONE gets to post here. All I'm asking is for some common courtesy and respect for someone who is working her tail off for this community. We don't want to impose rules other than those Linsey has designed as we had to do with Izzy's page, but if it comes down to her page having to get locked down every couple of months because people don't have any sense, then we (the wiki admins) will. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 02:19, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
If it's an issue, Wyn, then please by all means lock it down. Linsey has answered or commented in a few topics already that should be marked as answered, like the blindfold one for example. Spawning Power lovein could be moved to the hold tank. Same goes with Heroes + PvP = Nice Joke topic, it's already answered in her FAQ as you yourself pointed out. Linsey's a busy person, I'm glad we can all agree on that, so a little help for her might be nice, it would also help to keep the page slightly smaller. [shrugs] 000.00.00.00 02:27, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
Linsey does post on user pages and replies. Just be patient. --adrin User adrin ecto sig.png 02:52, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the moderate cleanup of some of the topics on this page, whoever did that. The problem here is not so much the large questions/suggestions/etc, but the ping-pong battles between users who diverge from the topic and talk about soon to become completely random things, irrelevant to the initial question. I think when this happens, it's not unreasonable to just plain delete their comments, or move that part of the discussion to one of the involved users' pages and tell them to continue there. Wyn seems like a fairly dedicated "Policewoman" on this page, and one that can take the whining of the users who complain that their ramblings have been moved. Also, a short notice at the top of this page saying that Linsey is a busy person and only has time to read and respond to reasonably-sized discussions before she begins to appreciate the help of other users to sort through this mess might help set a flag in the heads of newer visitors who usually tend to get into rambling ping-pong "DID - DID NOT - DID - DID NOT" mode. I think this concludes my ramble... User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 03:04, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Archiving

Linsey, I see your page is growing quickly in size once again, and I'd like to help in any way I can. Below will be a list of topics that appear to be resolved, and a quick yes or no on whether they should be moved or archived, and if yes, to where will be fantastic. Feel free to mark on the list its self. I linked them all so you can avoid searching for them. Wyn, if you think there are more that I missed, please add them to the list. Linsey, let us know which ones can be taken care of, and I'll see to it that they will be. Thanks! — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 04:21, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Since you don't have your Yes or No from Linsey (though most seemed to have been answered) the Holding Tank seems the wisest place if you intend on moving them, that way she can still answer/answer further if she wishes before archiving them herself. 000.00.00.00 04:56, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Music :D

Hey Linsey, what kind of music do you listen to? Love --72.230.63.96 02:53, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I listen to a lot of different kinds of music, but I mostly lean towards alternative and classic rock. My favorite band and artist of all time is The Talking Heads and David Byrne their front runner. They've been my favorite since I was literally 3 years old. Back in February, I was extremely lucky to see David Byrne in concert from the front row during a tour where he played a lot of Talking Heads material. So that pretty much made my year. I have videos on youtube if anyone else is a fan. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 03:49, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

while on the subject of music, are u allowed to listen to your own music while u work and do u have to use headphones if u can, or is there some sort of intercom/elevator music always playing in the office, or is it dead silence with the exception of occasional chit chat and ppl pounding away at their keyboards, OR do u HAVE to whistle while you work in order to entertain yourselves and keep you sane while/after working 32+ hrs straight?

Since we work in pods with anywhere from 4-20 people in there together, we don't really play music to the whole room. Most work with headphones on to drown out distractions. I listen to music a lot but more often than not, I put on movies or shows. I've got some pretty bad ADD to deal with, so I find that having the little visual piece can really help me not get distracted. It's like a super controlled distraction so instead of wandering off to read forums for a hour, I glance at the movie or show playing for a few seconds and that is enough to satisfy the ADD urges. I find that episodic programs can be just as good as movies for this. Most recently, I watched the first 5 seasons of 24 (I got bored after that, too formulaic). Before that, I watched Arrested Development (like 5 times, that show is the BEST EVER), the Office (British and American), Buffy (and Angel after that), Mad Men, CSI (the original and the spin offs), and a bunch of others I can't think of right now. Next I'm thinking about Battlestar Galactica since I've never seen it, what do you think? Should I watch the original first? Anything else I should check out? Something with a lot of seasons is the best since I don't want to be really paying attention to it and that is easiest to do if I've had the time to get more invested in the show. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 21:54, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
If you like sci-fi stuff, I would strongly suggest Babylon 5. Five seasons, the show is over so you get to watch all of it, and it's one of the best sci-fi TV series ever. Erasculio 23:46, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually, you should stay away from B5 if you're not going to be paying attention to it. It definitely is the best Sci-fi show ever made, but it demands a certain amount of attention or you'll get lost, not to mention all the subtle foreshadowing that you'll completely miss. 69.121.111.193 21:26, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Music, but a different issue. Is there a possibility to change the in-game music? In some GTA you could create a folder filled with *.mp3's which then was a radio channel within the game. I'd like to be able to edit the regular choice of GW music. Ɲoɕʈɋɽɕɧ 12:15, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

B5 is good as Erasculio pointed out but its a wee bit on the kitsch side. (I hv the full boxset myself and watched it like 5 times) I personally however would suggest watching Supernatural, the plot lines are easy to follow but the banter is witty and its fairly interesting, also the two winchesters are depressingly attractive, so enough to satisfy any ADD yearnings imho. it's up to 3 seasons at the mo, with a 4th season just ending in early may and a 5th season already commissioned. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 01:48, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Whether or not to watch the original before you see the new one is a good question. The 1970s original is what I would say is a lighthearted/campy show (except for the near total annihilation of the human race in the first episode), enjoyable if you don't take it seriously. The new show is the polar opposite of it, dark and realistic(for the most part). Watching the original first you would get some in jokes and references that might be meaningless otherwise. Just don't watch the 1980s one (except "The Return of Starbuck" episode, it was a good). Disappointment

Map rotation. Tourny points. Tonic update. Feels like something is missing. I noticed that on forums we got heads up the day before... the day before that we weren't getting a skill update. Honestly the skill balance is > new content. I would rather have a better balanced game than more storage + some new content, but maybe the game balance just isn't that important anymore. I think it is, but who am I to tell. In any case I view this as another disappointment being provided to the games fans. I've been hoping for the best, but I have reason to believe the BIG April update won't even occur until the last day of April. If this ends up being the case the wrong call was definitely made. Also, being deceitful like that is not how ArenaNet should play PR. Giving an announcement almost 3 months ago explaining these changes and what they will entail and telling us that it will be released in April. If it is released the last day of April how does that reflect? Hopefully this is not how things turn out, but if they do it would have been better to put off the update for a month and focus on skill balance instead. Announcing that there would be a delay would have been the best course of action.~>Sins WDBUser The Sins We Die By Sig.png 01:16, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Sins, stop reading deeper into people's comments than they were written, stop putting your preference above that of the vast majority of the fan base, and stop trying to speak for a group of people which you do not represent a large enough majority of. I count 3 of the greatest fallacies in one comment. — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 01:44, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

@Lupen: The number of hardcore PvPers is smaller than the number of PvEers, agreed. But who's to say that skill balances haven't affected the PvE sector? Ray of Judgment is an easy example (VSF, anyone?), but other things have more subtly affected them. To claim that skill adjustments are only for the PvP crowd... That's very debatable. That aside, there are the non-hardcore PvPers. How many more Wastrel's Collapse and Palm Strike sins, VoR mesmers, and Aura of the Lich necroes have you seen in AB, FA, and JQ? RA? I guarantee you that they're not all ranked PvPers (my former alliance had a very strong PvE component, and many of them would join us in lower-end PvP; I'm sure that our case isn't unique, or anywhere close). Skill balances affect everyone.
That aside, what's to say that PvE shouldn't be balanced? I 600 on a regular basis, and I'm sure anyone who has can tell you that it's broken to it's scalp. Two people effortlessly clearing dungeons designed to be difficult for eight-man teams? Invincible assassins who can go wherever they want? It would be one thing if it were something reserved for a select few (the few with the level of skill that a balanced game would require for such enormous benefits), but anyone can 600. Anyone can perma. It takes (almost) no skill, and has enormous rewards. Look at Cryway, look at VSF, look at Imbagons. How is that balanced? And that has nothing to do with PvP.
The point is, I don't think anyone would be "let down" by a skill update. With that in mind, I think a more proper question would be "Let down no one or let down the PvP community?". User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 01:58, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
That's antagonistic Lupen. Anyways, my preference of balance does represent the majority. Know why? Because balanced games lead to competitive games and competition means challenge. A challenge that people overcome they enjoy. Since, fun is what a majority of people play this game for I am in the majority. Paint your fallacies over my comments if you wish, it doesn't matter to me. I will express my concern either way until I have made my point to the degree I desire.~>Sins WDBUser The Sins We Die By Sig.png 01:59, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
@Raine: I think I should have specified a tad more. People in you possition are sadly the minority, and yes, I would like PvE to be balanced too. From what I have gathered, a very large part of the PvE player base is looking forward to the storage update more than the balance update, if they even care about it. I can't be everywhere, and I can't speak for everyone, that's just what I've gathered. Yes, skill balances effect everyone, but how many of those effected WANT to be effected? I don't think it's that many. I see where your comming from, and it's a stand-point I share, but right now, more people seem to want better storage options than skill updates. — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 02:09, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
i would rather have lots of storage in this storage update then a balance update that probably wont be balanced and wont have anything to do with the problem skills. also from a pvper point of view this way they can run stuff and get more used to it. also arent we at the point were the meta can be counted with skills already the way they are? i know there area always some skills that need to be changed and buffed but most of the time when something gets nerffed its completely nerffed. another thing to keep in mind is this storage update will probably effect you in that anyone who uses a pve toon to pvp will have more space to store items and weapons that they can use to swap in and out.75.165.115.205 03:26, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Well, I'm afraid Lupen has a good point there - a lot of (PvE) players actually don't want a balance update. They don't want their Permas or 600/Smite nerfed and they don't care about problems with PnH, PS or hexway. Why? Because they actually have fun doing godmode farming, speed-clearing areas or cry-waying through "elite" areas. It's all they do nowadays. They have done "everything" with their main character and pushed their Mo, Me and As to the relevant areas, so that's all they see as being left to do. Maybe the storage update will free some of their mule chars so that they might feel tempted to actually play another char - but I wouldn't bet on it because playing multiple chars is not rewarded. But balance updates? As long as it doesn't destroy their farm builds they don't care, and if it does they'll QQ like hell.
Personally I understand the need for balance in PvP, but nonetheless I believe ANet set the right priorities here. User Xelonir sig.pngXelonir 07:49, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Which part justifies gimmickry in PvP? I don't think any of it does, and I think you'll agree (though I may be wrong). So, then, which part of the above post justifies gimmickry (let's face it, that's all farm builds are: gimmicks) in PvE? PvE hasn't seen steps toward balance for the sake of appeasement -- is that really a good reason?
A couple of people also brought up the fact that most PvErs don't care about PvP balance updates; how many PvPers care about storage? A character has forty-five inventory spaces; that's enough for several sets of armor, several times the allotted number of weapon swaps, shields inscribed against every type of damage, and then some. How many PvPers really feel a strain on their storage space? I don't think that one side of the player base should be neglected when it can be avoided (please keep in mind that skill updates do affect everyone who uses skills). User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 09:15, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Sins, what i think you fail to realize is that this is two games, not one. PvP and PvE are very different, and just because one side gets some focus, you feel like the other is completely neglected. You need to remember that the live team is only a handful of people; thats the thing you should be upset about. It's not that the GW1 team is lacking in effort, it's that the company is lacking regard as a whole for keeping GW1 alive. If anet's focus wasn't entirely on making another sub-par wow clone, they might have put a little more care into GW1. They have stated after the content update this month, they're going to take a hard look at fixing pvp. If you read linsey's faq she has stated that they know heroes are a problem in pvp (the biggest issue atm) and that they wanna do something about it. I'm usually one to criticize and moan like the usual trolls, but I understand the situation. --adrin User adrin ecto sig.png 09:29, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
I still really don't get why people think GW2 is going to be a WoW clone...they've already given out more than enough info to show that it won't be. It looks like it's going to push the MMO genre and take everything that made GW good (besides the 100% instancing, but oh well) and make it better. Characters that grow in a PvE area but when you go to the non-World PvP area they automatically become UAX so you don't gotta waste multiple slots? Yes plz. Skills that change depending on how they're used and presumably a limited skill bar system? Yes plz. Persistence with cool world changing events while still having a story? Yes plz. They're also going to be taking everything that worked in GW1's PvP and making it better for GW2, and that's going to be amazing because they do know what didn't work here, Izzy said on WoC that adding tons of professions with tons of skills and tons of new mechanics really hurt the game, for example. I just think people see persistence and multiple races and go..."oh great, another WoW clone" when those are staples of the MMO genre...it's the other stuff they've hinted or talked about that change it from a straight up WoW clone. ArenaNet may be many things, but it isn't dumb when it comes to picking their battles, their vision of Guild Wars has always been that it was different from WoW, and considering they were built to make Guild Wars and basically Guild Wars only (that was the founder's vision...), that is one aspect I really really doubt they're going to change. DarkNecrid 10:17, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Guild Wars 2 can crash and burn for all I care (and I'm sure other people are starting to think it too), quite frankly getting damn tired of hearing about it. I'm disappointed there's no skill update etc and so on and this new pre content isn't very interesting for my gaming experience so meh whatever floats Arenanet's boat, in the end it's just another grind (farming) added to the game. It's not something I would have focused on if in their place but it's up to Arenanet to decide what it's going to do. Can people stop bitching now, in the end if you don't like what they're doing, leave. They've decided to put a bloody small team in place to handle one massive game (personally I think that's a massively brilliant move >.> <.< o.o), things are going to be damn slow coming out, get over it. 000.00.00.00 10:59, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Let's also consider that skill updates are almost always directly aimed at PvP. Have a look through the archives of updates. 3 or 4 updates have worked mainly on PvE, but the vast majority have been focused on PvP. What's wrong with a 3rd or a 4th update when all the others have been geared at PvP specific balance? The PvErs vastly outnumber the PvPers, and yet PvP has taken the focus of monthly updates. PvE needed a bit of attention for once, cut them some slack. It can't be all about PvP all the time. I know how much you guys want balance updates and how badly you want to see the game balanced, but it's ONE month to take care of some other things. How many people cried about not getting a skill balance update with the massive title update, or more recently with the Cunspear, Lightbringer and Luxon/Kurzick title update? — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 15:55, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

@ Raine, iway sway smite way and other "gimmick builds" have been neffed and are very easily counted. also why is it such a bad thing that people want to run something that isn't "balanced" or better named the meta? the game can become very boring when all you face is the same "balanced" build all the time.75.165.115.205 16:26, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
IWAY has been nerfed? Go to HA ID1 and tell me what groups you see forming. I ran my first IWAY earlier today (yes, I know, it's gross). Guess what we fought three matches in a row? Yep, you guessed it! Other IWAY teams! If you want to talk about a boring meta, look no further than HA (or worse - TA) today. It's the same as Sway was - spirits that destroy monks, pseudo-rit healers with unlimited energy, and frontline that wins by rolling their faces over the keyboard. Which part of that gameplay's been nerfed? Okay, Nature's Renewal isn't lvl 14 anymore. Is that really what you consider to be "nerfing" a build?
Very easily countered? Please tell me all the easy ways to counter the common gimmick builds. Sure, they're possible to beat, but good players will put in loads of effort to beat players worse than them. It's the same issue with Teaseway, Mind Blast, and whatever other lamer builds you want to name: players are able to succeed on a level that their lack of skill should not allow. When I say "the game should be balanced", I don't mean nerf everything into oblivion until there are only a few viable builds left. I mean balance the game so that the number of viable builds increases while the overpowered builds die. Remember when teams could run viable splits with things like SoR? Or when Dervishes could GvG (though the splinter weapon thing was pretty broken)? Ensign commented a lot on this; I'll find a link to it for you. I just want to make it clear that I'm in no way in favor of sealed-deck style play. User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 21:50, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
@Raine: "So, then, which part of the above post justifies gimmickry (let's face it, that's all farm builds are: gimmicks) in PvE?" (yes, that's a bit farther up this section). Answer: LOTS of people having FUN (or so they say). ... Oh wait, stupid me. It's a game, it's not supposed to be fun. /doh. User Xelonir sig.pngXelonir 07:13, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
(add) Though I would say that these gimmicks become a problem when (a) the gimmick is the only way to do something in a reasonable amount of time or (b) the gimmick is the only thing accepted by players to do something. Case (a) is a game design problem and could be improved on by ANet. And for case (b) there's a simple solution: remove the hero limit from PvE. User Xelonir sig.pngXelonir 10:55, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
DarkNecrid, just because certain things are MMO staples doesn't mean they have to be used. GW1 was good in part because it didn't use those staples but instead sought to be different. What people see with GW2 is, in part, a move away from that process. And in that, a partial move away from the thought of being different, of being experimental. Am I the only one that isn't sure having multiple playable races is a good thing, for instance? The fact that in GW1 all playable characters are human is an instant visual differentiation from most other MMOs that is now lost in GW2. And GW1's personalized instances allowed you and your party to feel like you were the only ones in the story, rather than just next in line to beat the next boss or whatever. And any way of telling a cohesive overall story is now gone in GW2 with player actions determining everything. How will you know what's lore and what's not, when it's turning out hundreds of thousands of different ways at once every day as different players do different things? How will the situations in the world be resolved? I just have mixed feelings about GW2. There's some good stuff about it, but there's also some not so good. --Axwind 13:42, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
GW1 isn't an MMORPG, it's an ORPG, so it not having staples of the MMORPG kinda makes sense. They're two different genres. Diablo 2 didn't have multiple races or a persistant world either. They already said they're using instances for all the story stuff like GW1. The world changing events (like the dragon + bandit example they've given) sound like they're done in such a way that they happen in a way that no one canonical outcome happens (ie: they repeat over time). DarkNecrid
No, there has to be some canon storyline, even if it's done in smaller packets. How else are you going to be able to say what truly happened in the world? How do you define the lore in that situation? And GW2 is still an ORPG, so it should follow the same path as GW1 in that regard. You don't change something that's proven to work, you only tweak it and fix the loose ends. Yet with GW2 it seems they're moving away from many things that made GW1 different in the first place. That's a loss, no matter how one looks at it. --Axwind 17:34, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
