Welcome (template)

Welcoming templates aren't really a good thing to have, especially when other people use them, and especially especially when they aren't substituted. Template:Welcome was deleted because of certain... problems with it, so user-created templates would likely follow suit. If you tag yours for deletion, make sure you add a subst: in the pages where they haven't already been substituted. -- Brains12 \ Talk 20:41, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

When you subst a template you would use the code {{subst:User:PoA/Welcome}} rather than {{User:PoA/Welcome}}, this causes it to actually place all the message on the page rather than just the template {{User:PoA/Welcome}}. If at a later time the template is deleted it doesn't affect any of the pages it's used on and doesn't cause red links. --Kakarot 00:53, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

For some it is unwanted page spam - it is a form letter pure and simple. Many people (new to the wiki) like to completely delete these things from their page. This is where they come up against the conservative user talk page archiving policies here which can result in confusion and anger from the new user who we wanted to welcome. I think it is unwelcoming to welcome someone and then start slapping down the rules when they want to clean up their page. If you want to welcome make it very specifically targeted and personal so the target is less likely to feel it is spam and want to delete it straight away. --Aspectacle 01:09, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
