You could make a page called User:Vanguard/sig and put {{subst:User:Vanguard/sig}} in your preferences. That way your sig will essentially be whatever is the content of that page, without breaching GWW:SIGN. People might still complain that it's too long, though. — Why 20:20, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

If you use, for instance, {{User:Vanguard/sig}}, people will complain you're using a template in your sig. Using {{subst:User:Vanguard/sig}} will result in {{subst:User:Vanguard/sig}} being replaced by whatever content is on User:Vanguard/sig. Basicly, when you use {{User:Vanguard/sig}}, your signature will change wiki-wide each time you edit User:Vanguard/sig, which will cause much wiki-lag and possible server drains, but when you use {{subst:User:Vanguard/sig}}, your previous signatures will remain the same, should you edit User:Vanguard/sig. — Why 20:27, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) (btw, that was {{subst:ri}} before saving :P) I brought up the idea of substituting a sig template long ago, don't know where it was (surely somewhere on the sig policy talk). the disclaimer on User:y0 ich halt/sig is a result of that discussion, as it was generally disapproved of and i created that sig page suspiciously close (in time) to that discussion. also, substing a page won't help with the code length that's on the talk page afterwards, which is the point here. for me, vanguard's current sig has a nice 6 lines of code, and that won't change by substing. using an inclusion would put too much stress on server, so i guess the only solution will be changing it... - Y0_ich_halt 20:34, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I somewhat agree with Noxify. When an anonymous edit to a userpage looks legitimate, assume good faith. Don't revert unless it's obvious vandalism, e.g. replacing things with LOLNOOB and whatnot. I can usually AGF but you can't always assume good faith when its an IP editing a userpage, because IPs do not have a userpage. Different scenario. I, as well as others, know for sure that you are not me; we own different user accounts and there's no way that my userpage is your userpage. Your edit would probably be reverted, unless it was a maintenance edit or something. With an IP editing a userpage, it's possible that the IP is that user; you can assume good faith and not look at the edit at all, or you could look at the edit and come to an educated guess as to whether it is that user logged out (and assume some good faith and leave it) or a malicious edit. Ah; if, for some reason, you used an IP and edited a character page of mine and changed a goal from incomplete to complete, I'd hope people left it. It could be me; I could have completed something in-game, come onto the wiki but not logged in, and updated my character page. Completely plausible and no reason, really, why it should be reverted -- from the points of view of other people. When the real me comes online, I'd revert because I'm the only person who knows for sure that it wasn't me.
