Concept arts[edit]

At the moment, all of the concept arts of the Gwen are spread in the article. It's a bit confusing, because they don't have anything to do with the particular section of the article. Won't it be better to move them all at the bottom of the article and group them together?

This is done so that there isn't one big arse wall of text. A gallery already exists and we're fairly opposed overall to having 3-rowed galleries, and for it to not stretch some monitors, we can only add 2 more images to it. It was figured that the better option was to have them to ease all the many lines of reading. This isn't the only article to do such (e.g., Cynn), though since we have the most of Gwen, it's most prevalent. Konig/talk 23:47, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Captain Gwen Thackeray[edit]

Where and when does GW1 expose this NPC with that naming? Screenshot? Aren`t people just mixing GW1 with GW2? User Yoshida Keiji Signature.jpg Yoshida Keiji (talk) 16:52, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

She becomes captain at the end of War in Kryta. She becomes Thackeray at the end of Hearts of the North. Is it explicitly stated? No, but she is "Captain Gwen" and she is "Gwen Thackeray." Just like how Keiran is never called "Lieutenant Keiran Thackeray" he is still that. Konig/talk 16:53, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Rewording needed: "Captain Gwen Thackeray (born 1060 AE) is an Ascalonian adventurer and the current commanding officer of the Ebon Vanguard.". User Yoshida Keiji Signature.jpg Yoshida Keiji (talk) 17:07, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
btw, reference for Captain: Gwen's Unintended Promotion.
Though I'm not sure if it's appropriate to start an article about the life of gwen with a title/name she only acquired recently. Tub 08:33, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
I personaly dislike lame edits [1] that either repeat what it was already written above or this kind where the user doesn`t even bother to rephrase the sentence so that it makes some sense. I thought that the convention to identify NPCs was based on names that can be targeted by UI or are displayed literaly at cinematics dialogues. (I haven`t done Hearts of the North since when I read I was going to get another Paragon hero...that was enough for me to lose all interest, if the dialogue actualy renames Gwen to Captain Gwen Thackeray; I can withdraw from this discussion, other than that I would just restore her name to the shorter.) But besides that... it bothers me to see people bring data based on GW2 information, it kinda spoils the lore of GW1. User Yoshida Keiji Signature.jpg Yoshida Keiji (talk) 08:52, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
The naming convention you noted is for article names, not the bolded first mention of the article's topic. The latter is and has been "full lore name" (hence why Keiran Thackeray is Lieutenant Keiran Thackeray), and usually at the latest we see the person. Gwen is a bit unique since she's the only non-massive-storyline spoiler late-game name-changed NPC. In the end, I don't think it matters which we go by, same as Salma. Konig/talk 15:40, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
If it isn't stated anywhere within the GW universe(1 or 2), I don't think it should state her surname is Thackeray. Who even says it's the custom in the GW universe for the women to take their husbands lastname, and who says that Gwen would chose to do so, even if it was a custom to do so. Just my opinion. Gaudy Gourd God 19:17, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
It's stated throughout GW2. And I think it's stated once or twice in GW1. Gwen does take the Thackeray surname. This is not the question at hand, or shouldn't be. Konig/talk 19:46, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
I disagree. If it is not stated anywhere in-game(as you said in the first post under this topic), then of course it should not be her name on her page. Besides, my previous comment wasn't trying to bring up a question of Tyrian custom, it was pointing out something which seemed absent in this discussion (in my opinion). Personally I havn't been able to find documentation for her surname in GW1, but if it is her surname in GW2, then that should be sufficient. Gaudy Gourd God 20:13, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
It is stated in GW2. It's all over the place in the game. As I said. My first post was in regards to GW1, in which I am not 100% sure (mostly due to how little there is between Hearts of the North and anything else in Tyria, which is effectively "nothing"). This discussion is, as far as I'm aware, not about whether or not she is "Captain Gwen Thackeray" (she is) but rather whether or not we should call her such when introducing her. Konig/talk 01:26, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
I think I remember her taking Thackeray's last name during the wedding, but I absolutely cannot find any sources in ingame-dialogues, the official HotN website or even google. If anyone can dig up a source related to GW1 (not GW2), please post.
If there's no source in GW1, then we don't know if she ever called herself Gwen Thackeray, or if it's something historians assumed and documented later. In which case we'll have a Trivia line, but nothing that belongs in an introduction.
That said, I still think the introduction should be "Gwen", no matter what. That's the name she's refered to ingame, that's the name/title she has during the majority of the storylines, and it's spoiler-free. It has been that way for a long time, and IMHO the existence of a tomb stone in GW2 is not a good reason to change the introduction. Tub 09:16, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Since Kimmes the Historian calls her Captain Gwen Thackeray, I highly doubt that it's something assumed. He calls her such in a series of books called "The Founding", documenting the Ebon Vanguard's recall to Ascalon and their journy to Ebonhawke. I think the ghosts in the Eye of the North in GW2 also call her that. So whether she called herself that or not, it's what her contemporaries and companions called her. Konig/talk 14:02, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Please, whatever the comes becomes of this, don`t forget to re-write it because the first line itself is already contradictory: Captain Gwen T is the current commanding officer...so which is it Captain or commanding officer? Have in mind everything was written for Gwen as met at the Eye of the North outpost and not the last whereabout. Because if the Thackery surname is added then it would turn to be more biographycal than introductory. User Yoshida Keiji Signature.jpg Yoshida Keiji (talk) 14:26, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Erm... commanding officer=one in charge=captain in this case (which would not be known if we merely call her captain, unless people go to the EV page). So it's not contradictory. Konig/talk 19:31, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

What about her education/studies? As a little girl in Ascalon obviously she was not a mesmer and I hardly can imagine that the charr would have been educating her for 7 years... So she must have had her education during that one single year in EotN before she became a 'commanding officer' of the Ebon Vanguard... this should be clarified. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 89.64.124.38 (talk).

I'd love to fil the article out more, but there's not really much information out there on the topic. Her training must have only begun in full after she joined the Ebon Vanguard, given we see her only starting to learn mesmer skills in The Flight North. horrible | contribs 20:38, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Beta weekend version[edit]

When she burnt down Lion's Arch

I've found some old screenshots with two quotes for the original beta weekend for prophecies:

  • "Why does everyone I love always die?"
  • "My 3 favorite things: skipping, playing the flute, and burning towns down"

-Chieftain Alex 21:40, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Should we add these quotes (and others if they can be found) to the main page? Perhaps a ===Beta Weekend Event=== section under the Quotes (between Ascalon (pre-Searing) and Eye of the North?)? I would say yes, personally, since I think they'd be too many for the Trivia section and it's worth documenting. Konig 01:41, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Yeah I think they're rather fun so worth documenting, guildwiki has loads of them. Like you said sounds fine. -Chieftain Alex 02:11, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Absolutely and I have some on my user page Gwen gone mad .MystiLefemEle 11:18, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Ramblings during Annihilator 2: Searing Day[edit]

By chance, did anyone catch her idle ramblings; about her misplaced cape, hidden flute and forgot where she put it? Just thought those would be nice to have up too, although, event over till next year :(MystiLefemEle 07:40, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Did Gwen “break up” with me? (Glitch)[edit]

A couple years ago, I made a “perma-pre” character. Right off the bat, I set about buying Gwen a Cape and Flute, giving her Irises and speaking to her, so she might accompany me on my travels and thereby lessen the loneliness of that insular world. She did so, even healing me from time to time as I exerted myself on behalf of the Vanguard (not that +20 HP made much difference while being hammered by Bandits for half my health in a single blow—but every little bit helps, I suppose). I left off questing at level 19 in order to retain my other companion, the Imp, yet continued farming trophies for Nick a long time afterward, still with Gwen, the Imp and a Bear in tow.

A few months ago, I took a break from playing this particular character, having already accumulated multiple stacks of Gifts, and feeling no need to keep up the practice religiously, but preferring to instead focus my playtime on Zaishen content for a while (with an aim to procuring an Envoy Staff before Wintersday, where I reasoned it would be most useful). Imagine my surprise when today I logged onto this character for the first time in several months, only to find Gwen wasn’t following me around. What’s worse, when I went to speak with her outside Ascalon, she no longer wore the cape nor carried the flute I had purchased for her! In desperation, I procured fresh copies of these, and handed her additional flowers withal. For my pains, I now have “2 Tapestry Shred [sic]” in my inventory; yet still, Gwen will not follow me, no matter how many times I click on her. :(

Apart from one occasion, early on—namely, that fateful day when I acquired the Res Signet (and used it)—there has never been another player in my party; so I know this cannot be a bug like the one which prevents people from acquiring a Shred, in the first place. All was well when last I played this character, and everything else is as I left it; I simply wish to know why Gwen (seemingly) despises me, now? Is she like one of those virtual pets you need to feed every day lest it “disown its owner”? . . . And here I thought girls were enough trouble in real life! -_- No offense. (Come to think of it, glitch does bear a phonetic resemblance to a certain other word. . . .) At the end of the day, all I can say is, “She took my money.” And that you have my sincere pity, Mr. Thackeray.

If anyone has any theory as to why this tragedy has occurred, I would be interested to hear it; or, if anyone else has experienced the same profound loss (her absence is keenly felt in our little party, I assure you), I should at least be vindicated to know it isn’t sanity I’m lacking. (Well . . . leave that aside.) And I would of course be most grateful for any proposed fix, should it prove successful. (And still thankful if it doesn’t; it’s the thought that counts.) If, on the other hand, your own Gwen has never glitched in this manner, then may you fare more fairly with everyone’s favorite pixelated Ascalonian maid. This isn’t the first time a girl stopped talking to me for no apparent reason, so I’ll just, uh . . . well, cry myself to sleep, I guess. ;_;

Sorry for the extremely late response, but this happened to me, too. I have no idea what the cause might be, but I'm very sad about this :( Her dialogue also seems broken, she only sometimes will talk when I click on her or get near her. I hope this is fixed, I'm very sad about it..... Eellis (talk) 19:54, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

thought i was crazy but mine is bugged too now. redid the item hunt for her and got a new tapestry shred. she still wont follow me... Justice (talk) 23:03, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
