Re: Upcoming Dervish, Paragon, and Smiter Update[edit]
Okay.
As far as the Dervish update goes, I've heard that it will make the profession more fun to play form respectable sources, so I'm actually anticipating this. I'm very curious as to how Arena Net will make a viable non-warrior melee profession without either (a) turning the profession into a rough copy of the Warrior or (b) turning the profession into a broken copy of the Warrior (read: Assassins). In fact, I'm rather looking forward to it.
However, the Smiter and Paragon updates unsettle me. Anet has, of late, shown time and time again their utter inability to balance damage with support and/or utility (this latest series of Mesmer updates stands as a testament to that), and Smiting Prayers and Paragons all-but-embody the seamless merge of those two things, at least in concept.
When one thinks of Smiting Prayers, what comes to mind? I, for one, immediately think of Reversal of Damage, Holy Wrath, Smite Condition, Smite Hex, Judge's Intervention. These, in my opinion, are what the attribute is about: defensive support and punishment. It's almost mesmer-esque, in its way, but so monk-like in practice. These skills mark a well-designed attribute. However, some recent changes (Ray of Judgment) lead me to believe that my ideals are not the same as the developers' ideals in this regard, and so I am worried that Smiting Prayers will follow Domination Magic into the "more mindless damage" category. :\
Paragons have been similar, in their own way. As long as Vicious Attack, Cruel Spear, and Merciless Throw exist, Paragons will be more-than-capable direct damage dealers. As such, any strong defensive support added to them makes them inherently broken. Skills like Anthem of Envy would be fine in a balanced game, but when the same character can then throw up a Defensive Anthem or Hexbreaker Aria while still maintaining very respectable damage, they become way too powerful. The opposite would also be true: a character with respectable defensive skills should not be able to use a skill like "Go for the Eyes!" or Crippling Anthem. And, again, Spear Mastery itself treads the fine line between "Warrior copy" and "purposeless". I see no simple clear-cut solution to the problem that is the current Paragon, so I am curious as to what Arena Net will do.
Hopefully, my uncertainties are unfounded and Anet will prove me wrong. I'm not going to get my hopes up, though. — Raine Valen 23:42, 16 Aug 2010 (UTC)

- I am also quite curious what will happen
whenif they over-buff Paras. In my humblest opinion, dual Para in GvG already stands as an incredibly viable spike, which basically only loses the linebacking capabilities of the warrior they lose. If they make the P/ any better at their job, expect the build back in the meta with a vengeance! -- Oiseau | 00:51, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- I am not uncertain. I foresee smiters getting turned into what mesmers are now, and paragons into what assassins are now. Protter Babe 11:13, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'm more worried that we haven't seen a preview yet. Considering that it's already a month or two late, I hope that they don't push it out without at least letting us see it. Karate Jesus 14:10, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- Why would that matter? All anybody ever does when they release a preview is whine. –Jette 14:32, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- Good point. But supposedly it's just the Dervish first and mostly forms stuff. So, it's PvE...and PvE doesn't matter because it's been imbalanced too long for anyone to care anymore. Karate Jesus 15:07, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- Are you really challenging them to prove they can make avatars brokenly overpowered in PvP too? Misery 16:25, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- I can see it now. Moved Eternal Aura to Mysticism attribute. --- NessHrin | 16:31, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Buzzzzzzzzzz[edit]
I'm a bee! Sometimes I get so angry I sting someone, then I die. So only one time really. Misery 16:29, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- A bee is an expendable part of the hive and it is fully aware of this. Or perhaps it is that it isn't aware that it is an individual at all. — Raine Valen 16:34, 19 Aug 2010 (UTC)
- Physically speaking, self-awareness is most likely due to different parts of the brain interacting with each other as a network, and research (as far as I know) shows that only humans, orangutans, and chimpanzees have this networking. So no, bees are technically not self-aware. --- NessHrin | 16:38, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, you are right, bees are dumb. Why did we want to be bees again? Misery 16:45, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

- Unfortunately, the wasp mind is much more simplistic than that of a human or even the most primitive proto-primates. The human sense of empathy gives us a certain desire to feel connected to such lesser creatures, but they are incapable of even such things that we would consider integral to existence: causality, fantasy, complex thought processing, etc. It is these such differences that bring up such questions as whether or not even smaller organisms, such as viruses, can truly be called life-forms or if they are merely malignant combinations of proteins and genetic sequences. Then again, they're vicious little bastards. Maybe there is some malevolent intent behind those tiny compound eyes. –Jette 17:00, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
