Guild Wars Wiki talk:Projects/Skills animations
Standardize[edit]
PoA mentioned recording all the skills at a certain place. As earlier suggestes i think it would be best to do this a GToB, maybe use Texmod to make environment black. Also doe sit matter what your character looks like(Armor, gender etc. )If so we can easily make a pvp charr to record. ~ Kurd 18:50, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- The Isle of Wurms has a good background that is fully black, without the need for Textmod. I have no idea if PvP characters are capable of touring the guild halls, though...As far as equipment and armor goes, hopefully not something too distracting, like a Tormented Shield, or too big. Between using Assassin Ancient armor and Assassin Elite Imperial armor, the latter is better, for example. Erasculio 18:58, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Video edit[edit]
You can only zoom in to a certain amount until your character starts to fade. Which leaves a big unnecessary space at the top.How do you guys cut off the rest of the screen to only show the character? ~ Kurd 19:20, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have been doing that in the video processing stage, using Animation Shop. Later today I'll write a small tutorial on using it. Erasculio 19:26, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi[edit]
Hi, I would like to join the project. I did Fire Attunement as a test. Advices would be appreciated ^^ --MageMontu 12:45, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Looks nice. Great work on image size, that file is way smaller than almost everything I have done. Erasculio 15:02, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I did some more elementalist stuff. Can someone check if they're good? Also is there a place on the wiki where I should upload them? --MageMontu 11:53, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- There all pretty good. Just a little request for the next set you're going to do: Please remove the cape ~ Kurd 12:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oh oki. I can redo those if u like. --MageMontu 13:45, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- No that wont be necessary ~ Kurd 14:14, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- The animations look rather nice, good work. You may consider adding your name to the list of contributors here and/or sign here which animations you would like to do (you don't have to pick an entire profession, you can do just what you want, of course).
- Regarding the uploads...We're waiting for Emily to reply one question about the uploading process before we start uploading the images. Once she replies, it will probably be an easy matter to prepare everything for the uploading. Erasculio 14:30, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Converting is taking longer than i thought. How does this look? 12 ~ Kurd
- They look really great. I like the one for Soldier's Fury a bit more than the one for Anthem of Weariness, since it was made in a slightly higher point of view, making it easier to see the circle around the character (in Anthem of Weariness, it's a bit hard to see the circular animation around the character). That's something that took me a while to notice - compare, for example, this animation, in which we only see a line of light in front of the character, with this one, in which we see the entire effect surrounding the character. Erasculio 14:30, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Spirits[edit]
Some skill animations for ranger spirits end after the spirit comes out of the ground. It looks ugly haveing a spirit come up through the character during the animation. DO we want to cut off the last few moments of the animation (just a few sparkles floating up and away), or do we want to capture the full animation but have the end look a bit messy? calor (talk) 20:29, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- So far I have been capturing the entire animation, but for ritualist spirits often the majority of the effects happens after the spirit itself has been summoned (like in Dissonance). Erasculio 20:46, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Alright. On a tangentially related note, I have forty ranger skills (all stances, all preparations, some spirits, nothing else as of right now) done here if anyone wants to take a look. I should have at least a dozen or so more done tonight. calor (talk) 01:07, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- I've never noticed the prot spirit like thingy above dissonance before :) 198.54.202.150 13:56, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Upload[edit]
I uploaded a few animations. Which seems to have crashed this page. So for now use this to see the ones ive uploaded. ~ Kurd 00:21, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
Skill Pages[edit]
Im going to make a list of skills so we can keep track of all these animations. I'll go by Profession, but im just going to include a link to the image seeing as actually including all of them would prob kill the page. — Seru Talk 00:43, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
Suited Software[edit]
i found wink recently. seems pretty nice to do stuff like this. a tutorial is included in the installation (i.e. help). - Y0_ich_halt 15:34, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'll have a look at it. I was having trouble with Studio. --Antioch 16:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- uh, nevermind. wink only gives .swf or .exe as output format, so to make gifs you need another program (like Adobe ImageReady or animake). - Y0_ich_halt 16:31, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- just noticed :) - Y0_ich_halt 16:31, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Camtasia Studio, definable screen recording, very easy to use.Sierra Invenio 19:44, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Necromancer[edit]
I have just started on the necromancer gifs. I am having trouble uploading the gifs onto photobucket as it keeps crahing once one is uploaded and when I do them one by one, it never completes. If there is a better/easyer way to upload, please tell me. A link to the few I have managed to get on photobucket is here EDIT: Is only the activation of skills being recorded and not side affects. Example is Dark Aura. Is the activation the only recorded part or is the animation due to sacrifise also recorded? There are others but I am using this as the example --CAJOS talk 16:00, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- It appears not to complete (says 100%, but never gives you the new page) but it does. Just click the my photos section and it will warn you. Ignore this and proceed. It will appear there when you load. --Antioch 16:40, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Mods[edit]
Try the Health Bar Remover mod. It's useful. Also, can someone make a mod to remove hero flags and hero names? Turning off the HUD makes it impossible to target things. --Antioch 16:45, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Question: The Dervish section is 'done' it says... How can I check the animations? |Cyan LightBoooh!!!| 16:48, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- thanks for reminding me. i wanted to exactly this question: how do i even access the animations? the project doesn't give any links and we don't have any overview pages. - Y0_ich_halt 17:01, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
just a hint if you're gonna use the mod: i might not work on slower machines as texmod itself requires lowers performance already ;) - Y0_ich_halt 18:36, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
GIMP[edit]
how can i convert a .avi video into a .gif animation with GIMP or photoshop? - Y0_ich_halt 18:35, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Dunno, I couldn't figure it out. It's probably impossible or annoyingly difficult with GIMP. calor (talk) 02:03, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- in that case, i'd remove the part saying you can use gimp. - Y0_ich_halt 11:56, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- It's possible, only (extremely) annoying. I only mentioned it because it's free, and some people like using GIMP. You have to...
- Get the GIMP Animation Package (for example, from here).
- Open GIMP, go to the "Extra" menu (on the menu bar), then pick the option "Split Video into Frames" (second to last option), and click on "Extract Videorange". A screen will appear asking which video file you want to open.
- And here we have problem 1. I don't know if that's only in my computer, but GIMP doesn't recognise the Fraps files. It does open .avi files, but specifically the movie files created by Fraps it cannot read. So we would have to convert those .avi files into something else (even .avi files, yay!) for them to work.
- Once a (working) video has been chosen, click on "Video Range". That will expand the same interface, showing a lot more options. It's possible to view the video and choose which frames are to be extracted.
- Once the frames have been chosen, click on "Ok". The first frame will appear, and there will be a "Video" option on the menu bar of the image, allowing cropping of the image, changing frame, etc.
- The "Filter" menu (to the left of the "Video" option) has an "Animation" section that optimizes the file size for .gif images, and may also reproduce the animation.
- When everything is done, go to the "File" menu, and "Save as", saving the result as a .gif file. Here I had problem 2 - the next screen should have an option to create an animated .gif, but it doesn't, at least not for me.
- And problem 3, the speed in which the animation plays may not be the same as seen in game. Theorically there are ways to fix this, but I don't know how to do it myself.
- I don't really recomend using GIMP (go Animation Shop), but for those who like to use it... Erasculio 12:43, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- is photoshop easier? - Y0_ich_halt 12:49, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- No idea, I don't have Photoshop : ) It's used by so many people that you can likely find a tutorial about it somewhere, though. Erasculio 12:53, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
- i guess i'll dl animation shop then... and uninstall some of the other tools i have o.O - Y0_ich_halt 12:59, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Sry...[edit]
but I can't help on this project. Some weird unexpected probs occurred and I cannot be much active, both on wiki and ingame. I'm removing my name from the list and here is the few stuff I made. Again sorry that I cannot help. --MageMontu 19:59, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Update[edit]
(Not really saying anything important, just to let people know this has not been forgotten) What is preventing this project from being implemented, based on the animations currently available, is the problem when uploading large files to the wiki. We could try using a third party host, but aesthetically it wouldn't look very good, plus it would make generating automatic links a mess. The option is talking to Arena Net in order to learn if it's possible to solve the uploading problems. Emily has acknowledged this issue and sent an e-mail about it to the IT people a few days ago, so hopefully we still get a reply soon(ish? It is the end of the year...) and then become able to settle this. Once that's done, we will be able to begin uploading the animations. Erasculio 16:55, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- Ive already started. Don't know what problems you're talking about.~ Kurd 17:45, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- I probably should egt back to finishing the last half or so of Ranger animations... calor (talk) 18:00, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- The skill infobox code for implementing the animations has been set. Now all we need is the fix to the above mentioned upload problem (although smaller files don't have that problem, so many skill animations have already been uploaded and are working). It may be a good idea to add the "Category:Not orphaned images" category to the uploaded files, given how they are likely to appear on the "Unused images" page. Erasculio 14:56, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
- Oh. I thought they appear in Category:ArenaNet video sequences. Or that doesn't count, huh? --Antioch 23:34, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Spear Attacks[edit]
I'm stuck with the spear attacks. It seems they all have the same animation. Which is a spear in fire and a white explosion at the character. Example: 1 2 3. How do we handle these? ~ Kurd 10:44, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
- They are slightly different...Image 1 above has a glowing ball of fire appearing around the spear, for example, while image 2 has a more barbed light around the weapon (Barbed Spear?) and image 3 shows a more organized light pattern. Maybe you could change the angle so it's closer to the character, viewing her from the side so it's easier to see the spear, and just show the throwing animation without showing the target? Since the hitting animation is always the same (the standard "being hit" one), not showing the target would allow high definition images without increasing file size too much. Erasculio 12:21, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
- They differences are so small that I'm wondering if its even worth it. You'd have to really compare them to each other to see it. I'll do a few more to see how it works out ~ Kurd 13:49, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Confused[edit]
Where are all the gifs? They can't be accessed from the main page, and only a few can be seen in talk pages and the explanation. I shouldn't complain, I haven't done anything to help this out, but some way to see the already finished ones would be nice. Uberxman1028
- Here for now Vili 08:23, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- We have changed the skill infobox template so the animations are automatically displayed in their articles. In other words, if you would like to see a skill animation, just head to that skill's article here in the wiki - if there's an animation available, the infobox will show an "Animation: Click to view" line (like the one seen here, for example). Erasculio 14:58, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Warrior[edit]
I will do warrior, atleast as much as I can. I have all sword/axe/hammer skills unlocked, most tactics skills for some reason, and most unlinked ones. Missing quite alot of strength skills though, but I'll do atleast the sword, axe and hammer ones (after I dl necessary stuff, which will be thursday) Mini Me 22:12, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Join the Project/Examples[edit]
Hi. I was wondering if i could officialy join this project? I just finished the animations for all Asuran skills and am starting on the Norn skills atm. You can find the examples of my work here. If those animations are acceptable I would be happy to help you with this awesome project. Lukasn | talk 23:34, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Requesting[edit]
I have not seen where CAJOS has uploaded any of the gif images for the Necromancers and his last edit was over a month ago. I see that he has a few of them on photobucket, but I was wondering if it was ok if I helped upload a few of the gif images for necromancer skills. --Shadowphoenix 05:06, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

- CA: I would but I do not a=have very many Mesmer skills. However, I do have a lot of Necromancer skills. Kurd: Ok I will start soon :) --Shadowphoenix 14:57, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Spells that expolit corpses[edit]
How exactly should I go about recording these types of spells? Do I need to record just the animation that happens to the character? Or do I need to record the minion being summoned as well? --Shadowphoenix 04:37, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- There aren't any rules for this; some skill types are more troublesome than the others. In my opinion, if there's a different animation for each skill, then record the summoning; if there's no different special effect on the body when each minion is summoned, just ignore it. Erasculio 23:13, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah sorry for the lack of communication or any productivity. I have been busy with my work and so havn't had much time to get to make the gifs. Once again sorry for the lack of communication. --CAJOS talk 23:34, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
- Np! Real life gets in the way sometimes, I am sure everyone here understands that. Since you will be back soon, would you still like to work on them? If so I suggest we split them up, for instance I could to Blood Magic & Death Magic and you could do Curses & Soul Reaping. --Shadowphoenix 15:34, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- I have done the no attribute ones and done the soul reaping ones. Done a few blood and curses then had to leave it for the time. I guess I could finish the curses line and you take the others. I just thought it had to be the same character for all skills but whatever :P --CAJOS talk 13:29, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Signing up[edit]
I saw you guys needed someone to do the warrior skills. As I have (nearly) all of those on my warrior, I'll join the project. Unfortunately my time is limited, so do not expect me to be finished very soon. I'll create a progress page so anyone can add warrior animations I have not covered. — Why 01:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
I'll do Illusion Magic.. or is anyone else doing that? --Cursed Angel 08:28, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Progress Pages[edit]
I saw that Shadowphoenix was using it but it occurred to me that other might not have noticed that I made a simple way to make a progress page.
You can use this template: Guild_Wars_Wiki:Projects/Skills_animations/Template:Skill_animations_table.
You can see how it is used in all the Elementalist pages.

- P.S. It doesn't work if you have ones that you won't be adding. No way to give it a red X like on this page Guild_Wars_Wiki:Projects/Skills_animations/Paragon

Update[edit]
I've updated the pages of "No attribute" skills. Please use them, and create pages of animation checklists like the one seen here for attributes and here for entire professions. When you have created the page, please link to it on the Project page. Thanks! --Antioch 21:00, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
- I made pages for most of them. Except the Sin and Mesmer for some reason won't work .... ~ Kurd 22:58, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
- Fixed. I've updated and separated a few pages for easier "at a glance" tells of how we are doing and what still needs to be done. --Antioch 03:02, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Infobox?[edit]
Will the infobox for the skill automatically update or do we need to add something? I just did Barbed Trap and it showed up correctly on the list of animations but not in the skill's infobox. --Go4the1 11:33, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- The skill article will be automatically updated to show a link to the animation. This may take a while as the server catches up with the changes. apparently I missed that... nevermind! --Go4the1 11:40, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
I can possibly work on this, particularly Ranger skills. I'll have to see if I can get the mods to work, never used them before...I'll check back here later. --70.158.147.83 18:16, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

- Maybe I should just zoom out more on my animations. But I only understand what you mean about less colors because of the Jasc technicals (as I'm color blind, I can't really tell the difference until you get really low in the colors ^^;;). --70.158.147.104 14:51, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Passive/Non-useable skills[edit]
For example, Edification is a passive skill which is listed under the Asuran skill list (as the list seems to be automatically generated) but is not a skill that can be activated, thus it doesn't have an animation to record. I'm irked by the fact that the lists are not technically "completed" because these skills are included in them and can't be checked off. Maybe it's a personal issue. But if there's any way that someone could remove the passive skills and monster-only skills (Splinter Shot (monster skill)) from the lists more efficiently than manually generating these lists, that would be great. I believe some of the skill lists were in a manual type of formatting, so if nobody fixes this after a while I'll just snatch the formatting from one of those pages and try to overhaul the pages that irk me. --Kyoshi 23:13, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Never mind, I fixed both issues and feel smart. Now we just need a new template for the Consumables list, because those are caused by items and not actual skills. It might actually be easier to manually create a list with almost the same visual formatting as the skill template, seeing as it's only going to be used for one list anyhow. Or to just remove it, since they're technically not even skills. If anyone would like to get started on it, whatever is deemed best, I'll gladly get started on the animations sometime soon. --[ Kyoshi ]::[ Talk ] 08:34, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Gif Slower on Differnet Browsers[edit]
I was looking at my animations again and they all appear to be moving at ~ half speed. Since I've made them I've switched to Chrome. I looked on Firefox and they were at full speed again. Internet Explorer is also at half speed. Others also seem to have the same problem.
Is this a problem? Do we care? Fenyx 14:00, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Are you sure it's not just how you have them on cache on Firefox but they're still loading on everything else? Erasculio 14:48, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Just checked on firefox and it does seem faster than on both chrome and IE. --JonTheMon 15:02, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yikes, they're definitely slower in IE. I don't know why that would be; I disabled browser-dependent optimization when I made my animations in Jasc. However they have the same issue. I've actually experienced the same on various different gif animations all over the internet. Might it be related to some default viewing option in different browsers, or the browser through which the animation was uploaded? I'm going to upload a copy of one of my animations in IE and see if that makes a difference. --[ Kyoshi ]::[ Talk ] 17:06, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- No difference. Just as slow viewing in IE when uploaded in IE. I'm gonna switch over and fiddle with the settings, see if there's some default there that might cause this. --[ Kyoshi ]::[ Talk ] 17:14, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds like another example of IE not following standards. Firefox obeys the encoding, IE cuts the speed. -- FreedomBound 17:18, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Considering I couldn't find any option in IE that slowed gif speed, I'd have to assume that's the case. I think we can also assume that Chrome doesn't follow standards either. I'm going to add a note to the page saying that the animations are optimally viewed in Firefox and start testing on a few other browsers I know of for comparison. --[ Kyoshi ]::[ Talk ] 17:25, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Just look 2 times to the same animation. First time is slow, second is normal. Don't think this problem need to be listed. Have some patience =) -- Cyan 17:55, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

- (reset indent) I'll try to get an IE7 installer then, and test that out. --[ Kyoshi ]::[ Talk ] 17:50, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Should we...?[edit]
I don't know if it would be relevant here, but seeing as there's a spot on our list for Consumable animations...would this project be suited for recording and compiling emote animations as well, or should that be a separate project? It seems just as useful as Skill Animations for the purposes of the wiki, and probably a much quicker project to complete. Someone let me know which would be preferable: an addition to and generalization of this project (possibly moving it to something like simply Guild Wars Wiki:Projects/Animations), or creation of another one for the sole purpose of recording emote animations. I don't know which would be better. --[-Kyoshi-]::[-Talk-] 18:32, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Inactive[edit]
Kaisha posted here before asking, but the project does mostly seem inactive, and I can't currently contribute due to only having GW access via a school computer. Regardless, though, there are some questions that need to be solved, so I think it would be a good idea to ping some of the contributors' talk pages and ask them to help out. The issues I know of are:
- Pet-related skills: Most could be done in the Isle of the Nameless, I suppose, but in particular Charm Animal is going to be tough since the pet will be attacking the whole time. (Maybe hit it with a long lasting enchantment, then hit it with Icy Shackles as it approaches?) Also, skills which display an animation around both the pet and the beast master will be awkward.
- Lightbringer's Gaze, Junundu skills, Siege Devourer skills: Gaze can only be used on certain enemies, and those enemies all attack on sight--Junundu and Siege can only be used in areas where the enemies are all predictably hostile. Might be able to accomplish these with Amity or the like, but otherwise attack skills will get in the way of the animation. Might need some player collaboration with this one, 'cause heroes will just kill things.
- Some of the images uploaded by Balistic use a dervish wielding a staff; unconventional and kind of silly looking.
- Consumable skills: I don't know how to get around this one. We need a list that has all of the items on the left side rather than the effects created by consumables, since some consumables have effects but no corresponding skill (see Squash Serum). I'm no good at wiki formatting, so someone will need to help.
- Snowball Fight skills: same sort of issue as with Lightbringer's, Junundu, and Devourer. If used in PvP, other players won't likely cooperate with your placement. PvE quests around Wintersday might work.
I think that's all I've seen. --ஸ Kyoshi 20:23, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
- Charm Animal may be something that can be done in the Menagerie? As I don't really know and I'm not sure, but I didn't seen any charmable pets in the Isles of the Nameless... It did seem some what inactive, hence I questioned and I don't mean to be rude about any of it, but I would like to see this project continue. I don't have the necessary tools to do this nor really the amount of time this would really require... I'd rather it not go back into the inactive list, but to see those on here (not banned) help step up or even more to step up and help out... Kaisha 20:28, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
- I didn't mean that Charm Animal should be used on the IotN, but yeah, the menagerie was my plan. We'll see. --ஸ Kyoshi 00:46, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Is this still going, if so I'll gladly pitch in. Just shoot me a skill list. Sierra Invenio 18:16, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
- Jump in! There are many listed on the page that you could do (the ones with the gray x for sure!). Have fun with it! Remember, you can add your name to the user list. :-) Kaisha 18:28, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

How....[edit]
Do we get these animations out of the unused files? when they're linked... Kaisha 00:52, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- I don't quite get what you're asking. --ஸ Kyoshi 07:11, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- I get the feeling they're in a list of orphaned files - except they're linked in the skill templates on each page or something of that ilk? --File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.pngChieftain Alex 10:23, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- They are listed in the Unused Files section. 72.148.31.114 16:48, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
