Halloween/Finale

This page contains information about an element of Guild Wars that has changed since the original writing, and may need to be updated to reflect the current state of the game.

The Halloween finale is the time that Mad King Thorn makes his appearances, having the players do various emotes to receive rewards. Failure to comply to Thorn's commands results in death for those partaking in the event. In order to partake in the finale, you must stand within the glowing circle in Lion's Arch or Kamadan, which is outlined by the Mad King's Guards.

Mad King Thorn has generally 3 parts to his activities:

Commands: During Thorn's text, a word will be in all capitals and will always be in a command - with the exception of playing music, where any instrument emote command will suffice.
Rock, Paper, Scissors: Done between various sentences, Thorn challenges a single player in the glowing circle to a one on one Rock, Paper, Scissors duel. In rock-paper-scissors a player can win, lose or tie. If you win, you get one of the Halloween Collector items. If there is a tie, nothing happens. If Mad King Thorn wins, he kills the player (who is quickly resurrected).
Mad King Says: Always at the end. In Mad King Says, similar to Simon Says, you must only perform the action when the dialogue contains the phrase "Mad King Says:". Performing the action for the other dialogues will result in death.

Since Halloween 2007, Trick-or-Treat Bags are given whenever the player succeeds in Thorn's activities (a total of 30 can be gained, excluding the Rock, Paper, Scissors activities). Along with the bags, at the end Thorn gives a festival hat to everyone in the glowing circle.

Deaths during the finale do not count against the Survivor title.
All instruments must be played at least once or Mad King Thorn will kill everyone. These instruments are: drums, flute, guitar, violin.
If you join the event in District 1 (one) and stay until the point of receiving the festival mask, and then go to District 100 (one-hundred), you will see the arrival of Mad King Thorn again and participate in his festival event again.
- This goes out of synchronization as the day progresses.
It is not required that you enter the festive event at the beginning. You can join at any time while it is in progress.
Maximum reward is 140 Trick-or-Treat Bags (ToTs) and at least 55 Gamer points if Mad King's Fan is still active at the end of the finale:
- 30 ToTs for following instructions
- + 10 ToTs for being picked and winning in rock-paper-scissors
- + 100 ToTs if Mad King's Fan is still active at the end of the finale
- 30 Gamer points for following instructions while Mad King's Fan is active
- + ? Gamer points for being picked and winning in rock-paper-scissors while Mad King's Fan is active
- + 25 Gamer points if Mad King's Fan is still active at the end of the finale
If you do nothing and stand near-by Mad King Thorn you will be granted 10 ToTs for correctly playing Mad King Says when it doesn't contain "Mad King Says:".
If you do not have enough room in your inventory to receive a festival hat or a ToTs, it will be dropped on the ground and assigned to your character.
The Mad King's Guards, that appear as piles of oversized candy corn around the glowing circle, stand up during a finale.

Anomaly.The /dancenew emote will not count as the /dance emote when requested by Mad King Thorn.

Anomaly.In 2009, Mad King Thorn always called players participating in the event Elonians, even if the festival event is taking place in Lion's Arch.

Bug.In the Polish translation, the Beg and the Mad King Says dialogue sections are partially not translated and some of these sections are swapped with different ones.

The line "If you don't dance, then you're no friends of mine." of the dance dialogue comes from the lyrics of The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats.
The last line of the Go Team dialogue is a reference to the title of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.
The line "The Great dwarf is an oxymoron." is a Refence to the Order Of the Stick #355 [1]
The last line of the agree dialogue is a reference to a catch phrase from History of the World, Part I.
In Kamadan, Jewel of Istan, the scare dialogue might be a reference to the in-game quest Flamingo-ing... going... gone., although there, the /shoo emote is used.
