This page contains information about an element of Guild Wars that has changed since the original writing, and may need to be updated to reflect the current state of the game.

The Halloween finale is the time that Mad King Thorn makes his appearances, having the players do or not do various emotes to receive rewards. In order to partake in the finale, you must stand within the circle of ghostly flowers in Lion's Arch or Kamadan. A finale is 30 minutes long.

Activities[edit]

Mad King Thorn has generally 3 parts to his activities:

  • Commands: During Thorn's dialogue, he will command characters to use a certain emote. Characters that fail to do so will be killed by Thorn and resurrected before he gives his next command.
    • When Thorn commands to do so, each of the four instruments (i.e. drums, flute, guitar, and violin) must be played by four different players (i.e. one player using all four instrument emotes will not complete this command). If this is not completed, Thorn will kill everyone. If this is completed, no one is killed and everyone receives a Trick-or-Treat Bag (ToT), even individuals that did not play an instrument.
  • Rock-paper-scissors: Done between various sentences, Thorn challenges a single character in the glowing circle to a one on one rock-paper-scissors duel. In rock-paper-scissors a character can win, lose or tie. If you win, you get a ToT. If there is a tie, nothing happens. If Thorn wins, he kills the chracter (who is resurrected before he gives his next command).
  • Mad King Says: Always at the end. In Mad King Says, similar to Simon Says, you must only perform the action when the dialogue contains the phrase "Mad King Says:". Performing the action for the other dialogues will result in death.

Rewards[edit]

Since Halloween 2007, ToTs are added to one's inventory whenever the player succeeds in Thorn's activities. Since Halloween 2011, Gamer points are awarded if Mad King's Fan is active whenever the player succeeds in Thorn's activities. Since Halloween 2012, a Minutely Mad King Tonic is added to the inventory of every character who stands in the glowing circle at the end of each finale.

  • A total of 130 ToTs and 55 Gamer points can be gained (excluding the awards from rock-paper-scissors) if Mad King's Fan is still active at the end of the finale:
    • 1 ToT for following each instruction (maximum total of 27 ToTs)
    • + 1 ToT if each of the four instruments are played by four different players (maximum total of 3 ToTs, since this command occurs three times per event)
    • + 1 ToT for being picked and winning in rock-paper-scissors
    • + 100 ToTs if Mad King's Fan is still active at the end of the finale
    • 1 Gamer point for following each instruction while Mad King's Fan is active (maximum total of 27 Gamer points)
    • + 1 Gamer point if each of the four instruments are played by four different players while Mad King's Fan is active (maximum total of 3 Gamer points, since this command occurs three times per event)
    • + 1 Gamer point for being picked and winning in rock-paper-scissors while Mad King's Fan is active
    • + 25 Gamer points if Mad King's Fan is still active at the end of the finale
  • If you do nothing and stand in the glowing circle, you will gain 7 ToTs (for correctly playing Mad King Says when it doesn't contain "Mad King Says:") and a Minutely Mad King Tonic. You can gain up to an additional 3 ToTs (for a total of 10 ToTs) if each of the four instruments are played by four different players.

Quotes[edit]

A few seconds before Mad King Thorn is about to make his appearance:

Mad King's Guard: "The Mad King is coming! The Mad King is coming!"
Mad King's Guard (1): "The Mad King returns! On the Hallowed Eve he will appear!"
Mad King's Guard: "Prepare for the coming of the Mad King! He will rock your very world!"
Mad King's Guard (2): "The Mad King will return to Lion's Arch on the Hallowed Eve! Mark me well: when the Mad King returns, you are all doomed!" (only in Lion's Arch)
Mad King's Guard: "The Mad King will come to Kamadan on the Hallowed Eve! Mark me well: when the Mad King returns, you are all doomed!" (only in Kamadan)

Dialogue[edit]

Opening dialogue[edit]

Halloween 2005 to 2010
”Greetings, people of Elona! I am King Thorn of Kryta! I command you to entertain me on this Hallowed Eve!”(In Kamadan, Jewel of Istan)
"Greetings, people of Kryta! Your beloved King Thorn has returned! I command you to entertain me on this Hallowed Eve! "(In Lion's Arch)
"Come and stand before me, my subjects, and bask in my glory!"
"Yes, gather 'round. Don't be intimidated by my regal bearing. I won't harm you, unless you give me good reason to do so..."
"Is this everyone? Where have all the brave <Tyrians/Elonians> gone? COME HERE, NOW!"
"Good, good! Seeing all my adoring subjects before me again gives me a WONDERFUL idea. Let's have a CELEBRATION in honor of ME!"
Halloween 2011, in Lion's arch
”O beautiful Kryta! O slightly less attractive but nonetheless endearing Krytan subjects! Are you ready to adore me?”
”You can't appreciate my splendor from that far away. Stand in my circle!”
”Yes, gather 'round. You have nothing to fear! Actually, you have much to fear, but it's best not to think on it.”
”Honestly, my presence is best enjoyed from a range where you can hear my commands.”
”Now that we're together again it would delight me if we played some games. My delight is a paramount, so you'll do what i say or DIE!”
Halloween 2011, in Kamadan, Jewel of Istan
”Greetings, fine people of Elona! Gather round and i shall treat as my own subjects! It nearly become true once...”
”But enough reminiscing, come stand in my circle! My splendor must be seen up close!”
”Honestly, my presence is best enjoyed from a range where you can hear my commands.”
”You have nothing to fear! ...unless princess Zola is here. She does have a temper!”
”Splendid! Now that we're together again it would delight me if we played some games. My delight is a paramount, so you'll do what i say or DIE! If you play along, I'll make it worth you while, particulary if you pay extra close attention...”

Kneel dialogue[edit]

"It is fitting for subjects to show their king the proper respect, is it not?"
"Why, in the old days, there was not a man in all the world who dared look me in the eye as if we were equals." (In Lion's Arch)
"In days of old, any who did not show proper respect to the king paid with their lives. Fitting, if you ask me." (In Kamadan)
"Now, kneel before King Thorn! Kneel before me! KNEEL NOW, I SAY!"
"Those who did not kneel must die!" (if someone doesn't /kneel)
"I just love to see you all grovel! HA HA!" (if someone /kneels)

Agree dialogue[edit]

"Isn't this fun? I haven't enjoyed myself this much since I had that entire village skinned alive all those years ago!"
"This is quite entertaining, don't you think so?"
"I asked you all a question! Do you AGREE, or don't you?"
"I'm sure you can guess what happens to subjects who do not agree with their king!" (if someone doesn't /agree)
"What did you hope to win by disagreeing with your king? Instead, you lose... YOUR LIFE!" (if someone doesn't /agree; during Halloween 2011)
"HA HA! It is good to be king." (if someone /agrees)

Joke dialogue[edit]

"What this celebration needs is a bit of humor. Unfortunately, the court jester couldn't make it tonight."
"Luckily for you, in addition to being wise and generous, I am very, very witty. Listen up!"
"Why did the Charr cross the Wall?"
"To get to the other side!"
"Why can't you borrow money from a Dwarf?"
"Because they're always a little short. HA HA HA HA HA! Get it? DWARVES are SHORT!
"Knock, Knock"
(Now you say: "Who's There?")
"It's Mad King Thorn, and I command you to laugh! LAUGH NOW OR DIE!"
"A Troll, a Tengu and a Dwarf walk into a bar..."
"No wait, only the Troll and the Tengu do, the Dwarf walks UNDER the bar!!"
"I just flew in from the Underworld..."
"and boy are my arms tired!"
"When I first returned from the Land of the Dead, one of the fine citizens of Lion's Arch let out a cry: "Why King Thorn, you have a pumpkin on your head!"
"And I said, "Eh? So he repeated, "Milord, you have a pumpkin on your head!""
"And I said, "What? So he yelled, "Milord, you have a pumpkin on your head!""
"To which, I replied, "A thousand pardons, fine citizen, I cannot hear you. I HAVE A PUMPKIN ON MY HEAD!" HA HA HA HA HA!"
"How many Asuras does it take to screw in a power core?"
"None, they force a human to do it for them!"
"How are a Paragon and a drunkard alike?"
"Both like to shout at strangers and run around without any pants."
"What's the difference between the Great Dwarf and the Great Destroyer?"
"One is a harbinger of the apocalypse and the other is an oxymoron."
"Why do the Norn "Become the Bear?""
"Because "Become the Arrogant Loudmouth" was already taken by the Asura."
"This celebration gives me a feeling of deja vu."
"This celebration gives me a feeling of deja vu."
"This celebration gives me a feeling of deja vu. (That's a joke, you dolts! LAUGH NOW OR DIE!)"
"What do you say to an Asuran stilt walker?"
"Hello down there!"
"Why can't Orrians maintain their armies?"
"Because they keep dropping out of their sleevies!"
"I know you mortals are always interested in the future so I will give you a little preview."
"Two hundred years from now.."
"YOU ARE ALL DEAD! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
"What's the difference between Lazarus the Dire and Kormir?"
"One never got what they deserved and the other never deserved what they got!"
"What's the difference between someone who doesn't laugh at my jokes and a corpse?"
"I don't know either!"
New jokes from Halloween 2011
"What is a coward favorite treat?"
"Retreat!"
"How do you know if a Charr likes you?"
"He asks for seconds! Ha ha ha ha!"
"A human, a Dwarf, and an Asura walk into a bar, and the bartender asks for their orders."
"The human orders wine, the Dwarf oders ale..."
"The Asura orders the bartender to park his golem!"
"What do you get when you cross a Norn and an Asura?"
"A Norn with something stuck to his boots!"
"One way or another, my jokes always slay the audience!" (if someone doesn't /laugh)
"Although I know the joke was quite rewarding in itself, here is a little something for those who laughed." (if someone /laughs)

Rock-paper-scissors dialogue[edit]

Halloween 2005 to 2010
"Now, as you all know, while I lived, my military genius was unsurpassed. I crushed every peasant revolt that rose up against me!"
"My army could not be defeated! My fleet was unsurpassed! Most impressive of all, I was the MASTER of that greatest test of strategic aptitude: ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS!"
"<Character name>, you look like a smart one! Now, I am going to count down from three, then you must choose a weapon that will overcome the weapon I choose."
"I have lost? How can that be? DID YOU CHEAT ME? No, I suppose not. Here is your reward." (if player beats Thorn)
"A tie? Ha ha ha ha ha. Great minds think alike, do they not?" (if player ties with Thorn)
"I'm afraid I'm just too smart for you. You've lost and so you must die. Justice is cruel, ha ha ha!" (if player loses to Thorn)
Halloween 2011
"When I lived, my might was unmatched. I arm-wrestled frost wurms, leg-wrestled wind riders, and killed everyone who doubted me!".
"Most impressively I was a master of ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS! I've heard of a new variant with drake and M.O.X., but I'm a purist... AND the most fearsome competitor you'll ever meet!"
"<Character name>, you look up to my challenge! Now, I will count down from three. On one, we will both reveal our weapons and then celebrate my triumph. Ready?"
"You've won? Well, no one will ever believe you beat me, so accept this prize as a consolation." (if player beats Thorn)
"A tie? Ha ha ha ha ha. Great minds think alike, do they not?" (if player ties with Thorn)
"You never really had a chance. I am, after all, the great King Thorn, and you are a corpse... now! Ha ha ha!" (if player loses Thorn)

Music dialogue[edit]

Halloween 2005 to 2010
"I grow weary of these games. Let us have music! I demand music!"
"Everyone play and keep playing. Play your hearts out. PLAY OR I WILL RIP YOUR HEARTS OUT!"
"Now, play for me! And give it everything you've got!" (In Lion's Arch)
”Yes, yes. Play for me now! And give it everything you’ve got!” (In Kamadan)
"Such sweet music to my ears. It reminds me of my glory days. You have all done well and will be rewarded."(if all instruments are played)
"Where are the GUITARS? Don't you know you can't choose a better instrument? YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED!"(if no one does /guitar)
"What madness is this? Are you all deaf? How can you make sweet music without any FLUTES! I'M DISAPPOINTED..."(if no one does /flute)
"No violins? Not ONE of you thought to play the VIOLIN for me? How can such INCONSIDERATE beasts be allowed to live?"(if no one does /violin)
"Where are the DRUMS? I cannot dance without a steady beat! Not that you'd appreciate my sweet moves..."(if no one does /drum)
Halloween 2011
"This celebration needs music! VIOLINS! GUITARS! FLUTES! DRUMS!"
"Everyone play and keep playing. Play your hearts out. PLAY OR I WILL RIP YOUR HEARTS OUT!"
"PLAY! But no singing! Only Bruce the Herald sings!"
"..."(if no one does /guitar)
"NO FLUTES? Are they all broken? Maybe if you had durable Krytan flutes instead of those flimsy Ascalonian ones..."(if no one does /flute)
"I don't hear any strings! How could you forget the VIOLINS? Has this nation lost all its culture since my rule?"(if no one does /violin)
"Where are the DRUMS? I cannot dance without a steady beat! Not that you'd appreciate my sweet moves..."(if no one does /drum)
"Now THAT'S what I call music! What do you say to returning to my realm and playing in my court FOREVER?" (if all instruments are played)

Beg dialogue[edit]

Halloween 2005 to 2010
"You all like treats, don't you? Of course you do! We all love treats!"
"Hmm... Some of you don't seem to want treats very badly. You had better convince me that you really, really want a treat, or I shall be disappointed..."
"Let me see you beg!"
"Hardly a worthy effort from some of you. Can you not beg any better than that?" (if someone doesn't /beg)
"Many of you are excellent beggars! Ha ha! I am pleased." (if someone /begs)
Halloween 2011
"BEG for your treats!"
"Hmm... Some of you don't seem to want treats very badly. You had better convince me that you really, really want a treat, or I shall be disappointed..."
"You all like treats, don't you? Of course you do! We all love treats!"
"Here's an analogy for you: begging is to standing around as rewards are to DEATH!" (if someone doesn't /beg)
"Many of you are excellent beggars! Ha ha! I am pleased." (if someone /begs)

Dance dialogue[edit]

"There is something missing from this celebration... but what could it be?"
"I know! This is a party, is it not? Then why is there no dancing?"
"Let the dancing begin! Dance, I say! DANCE!!!!"
"If you don't dance, then you're no friends of mine." (if someone doesn't /dance)
"Some of you dance well. I am pleased. Here is your reward." (if someone /dances)

Go team! dialogue[edit]

"It is nice to see so many people from across Tyria working together to appease a Mad King such as I. It almost brings a tear to my eye." (In Lion's Arch)
”It is nice to see so many people from a distant land working together to appease a Mad King such as I. It almost brings a tear to my eye.” (In Kamadan)
"However, some of you do not seem to possess the proper... how shall I put it... team spirit."
"Let me see your team spirit... GO TEAM!!!"
"This lack of team spirit will not be tolerated! Die!" (if someone doesn't do /goteam)
"Yes! It even smells like team spirit!" (if someone does /goteam)

Bow dialogue[edit]

"Ah... it is good to be back in Lion's Arch." (In Lion's Arch)
”Ah... it is good to be back in Kamadan. When I was a young man, I came all the way here from Kryta to woo the royal princess.” (In Kamadan)
"I remember a time when I would walk through the city and all of my subjects would bow before me."
"If only I could relive those glory days, when all would bow before me..."
"Perhaps I was too subtle in my request for some of you to understand. Too bad for you." (if someone doesn't /bow)
"Loyal subjects are always rewarded." (if someone /bows)

Scare dialogue[edit]

"Hmm... things are not nearly scary enough around here."
"I think that on a night such as this, the mood should be very scary."
"If only someone had a Palawa Joko mask..." (in Kamadan during Halloween 2011)
"I'd like you all to try and scare me. DO IT NOW!"
"Some of you couldn't scare a moa bird!" (if someone doesn't do /boo; in Lion's Arch)
"Some of you couldn't scare a flamingo!" (if someone doesn't do /boo; in Kamadan)
"Some of you truly frightened me! I think a reward is in order. (if someone does /boo)

Mad King Says dialogue[edit]

"This last game is very difficult and will take all of your skill and knowledge. Even the greatest heroes of Orr, Kryta, and Ascalon have feared to play this game with Mad King Thorn. We shall now play..." (In Lion's Arch)
”This last game is very difficult and will take all of your skill and knowledge. Even the greatest heroes of Elona have feared to play this game with Mad King Thorn. We shall now play...” (In Kamadan)
"...Mad King Says!"
Halloween 2005 to 2010
"All right, this is very simple. You must do only what the Mad King Says. If I give a command preceded by the words "Mad King Says," then you must obey. If you do not hear these words, then you must not undertake the action. Are we ready?"
Halloween 2011
"As if my orders weren't imperatives, let's make a game of it. If I precede a command with the words "Mad King Says," then you must follow the command IMMEDIATELY! If I don't say those words, do nothing. Ready victims? I mean... ready players?"
"Let me see your muscles! Mad King Says: FLEX!"
"I think I would like you all to jump now. Mad King Says: JUMP!"
"All right now, I think I would like to hear all of you roar like a great beast. Yes, that would be nice. Mad King Says: ROAR!"
"Let's see your muscles! FLEX!"
"Now JUMP!"
"All right, now roar like a monster! Ready, set, ROAR!"
"I know you are not bored, but still, I would like to see you YAWN!" (In Lion's Arch, and prior to 2011 in Kamadan)
"Pretend like [sic] Palawa Joko was giving these instructions and YAWN!" (In Kamadan during Halloween 2011)

Closing dialogue[edit]

Halloween 2005 to 2010
"Sadly, it is time for me to go."
"Do not weep, for it has been a glorious night!"
"Look for my heralds, mark the signs that foretell my coming, for I will return!"
"Farewell, my loyal subjects! Here is a final gift for each of you!" (In Lion's Arch)
”Farewell, my adoring public! Here is a final gift for each of you!” (In Kamadan, Jewel of Istan)
Halloween 2011
"Sadly, it is time for me to go."
"Don't cry, little Krytans. You've made me quite happy!" (In Lion's Arch)
"So happy that I may grace you with my presence again before my power wanes!" (In Lion's Arch)
"Don't cry, people of the golden sun; you've brightened my night!" (In Kamadan)
"You've pleased me so well that I may visit again before my power wanes!" (In Kamadan)
"Farewell, loyal subjects! Here's a little something to remember me by. Something very little!"

Notes[edit]

  • It is not required that you enter the finale at the beginning. You can join at any time while it is in progress.
  • Deaths during the finale do not count against the Survivor title.
  • If you join the finale in a low-numbered district (e.g. 1) and stay until the point of receiving a Minutely Mad King Tonic, and then go to a high-numbered district (e.g. 100), you will see the arrival of Mad King Thorn again and participate in his finale again.
    • This goes out of synchronization as the day progresses.
  • If you do not have enough room in your inventory to receive a Minutely Mad King Tonic or ToT, it will be dropped on the ground and assigned to your character.
  • The Mad King's Guards, that appear as piles of oversized candy corn around the glowing circle, stand up during a finale.
Anomaly Anomaly. The /dancenew emote will not count as the /dance emote when requested by Mad King Thorn.
Anomaly Anomaly. In 2009, Mad King Thorn always called players participating in the finale Elonians, even if the finale is taking place in Lion's Arch.
Bug Bug.In the Polish translation, the Beg and the Mad King Says dialogue sections are partially not translated and some of these sections are swapped with different ones.
