Lockpicks are used to open locked chests in both normal and hard mode. While they are optional in normal mode, every locked chest in hard mode must be opened using a lockpick. In the expansion Eye of the North all locked chests require a lockpick.

[edit] Use

Unlike keys, lockpicks have a potentially infinite number of uses. They do, however, have a percent chance to break depending on certain factors. Once broken, the lockpick is destroyed and will disappear from the inventory. Successfully retaining a lockpick earns 250 points towards the Lucky title while breaking one adds 2.5 points for every 1% retention rate towards the Unlucky title.

[edit] Statistics

The base chance of retaining a lockpick upon opening a chest is determined by the following formula:

(Character level / 2) + (3 * Treasure Hunter ranks) + (2 * Lucky ranks) = %

A lockpick bonus will also be given on top of the inherent bonus to any normal chest, depending on the price of the key. This is to compensate for the money one would save in the long run when using keys rather than lockpicks in hard mode. The following tables illustrate the inherent lockpick retention based on titles and the bonus lockpick retention based on the type of chest in normal mode at level 20:

Inherent Lockpick Retention
Treasure Hunter
Lucky 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
0 10% 13% 16% 19% 22% 25% 28% 31%
1 12% 15% 18% 21% 24% 27% 30% 33%
2 14% 17% 20% 23% 26% 29% 32% 35%
3 16% 19% 22% 25% 28% 31% 34% 37%
4 18% 21% 24% 27% 30% 33% 36% 39%
5 20% 23% 26% 29% 32% 35% 38% 41%
6 22% 25% 28% 31% 34% 37% 40% 43%
Normal Mode Retention Bonus
Key Cost Chest Bonus
50 Gold 55%
80 Gold 54%
200 Gold 50%
300 Gold 45%
450 Gold 35%
600 Gold 30%
750 Gold 25%
1 Platinum 250 Gold 10%
  • For example, you have a 40% retention rate (assuming rank 0 treasure hunter and lucky) for normal mode Eye of the North chests (i.e. 10% inherent + 30% bonus because EotN chests count as 600g chests).
  • If your retention rate is RR, then with one lockpick on average you will be able to open 1/(1-RR) chests.

[edit] Dialogue

The following messages appear for the user when they attempt to open a chest with a lockpick:

Opening a chest in Normal mode while you have both a key and a lockpick in your inventory:

Would you like to use a(n) [key name] or a lockpick to unlock the [chest name]? You have a X% chance to retain the lockpick.

Opening a chest in Any mode while you only have a lockpick in your inventory:

Would you like to use a lockpick to unlock the [chest name]? You have a X% chance to retain the lockpick.

Opening a chest in Hard mode without a lockpick:

This chest is locked. You must use a lockpick to open it.

[edit] Notes

  • Merchants in alliance held towns offer lockpicks at a discounted price of 1200 Gold, people with access to these will often resell in towns for a small margin, but overall still lower the price compared to the regular merchants.
  • Eye of the North Chests in Normal Mode have a "virtual key cost" of 600 Gold meaning a retention rate bonus of 30%

[edit] Lockpicks vs Keys

Disregarding the contribution to the Lucky/Unlucky titles, when does it become wise and profitable to use lockpicks instead of Keys?

(Based on 1,500Gold lockpicks)

Key cost Rate
50Gold 97%
80Gold 95%
200Gold 87%
300Gold 80%
450Gold 74%
600Gold 60%
750Gold 50%
1250Gold 17%

(Based on 1,250Gold lockpicks. Typical price for buying them from players in-game.)

Key cost Rate
50Gold 96%
80Gold 94%
200Gold 84%
300Gold 76%
450Gold 68%
600Gold 52%
750Gold 40%
1250Gold 0%
  • The Rate on the right column indicates the Retention Rate necessary to start using lockpicks instead of Keys.
  • The Values represent the point at which a single lockpick will open as many chests as 1250/1500Goldworth of the corresponding keys.
  • If your Retention Rate is below the value on the right column for the given type of key, using keys will be cheaper.
  • If your Retention Rate is equal to the value on the right column for the given type of key, using keys or lockpicks will cost you as much.
  • If your Retention Rate is higher than value on the right column for the given type of key, using lockpicks will be cheaper.
  • Please note that these boards only refer to the choosing between keys and lockpicks concerning which is cheaper and when.
