CSS url()

url() also triggers the error. Its useful in CSS for adding background images. MediaWiki:Common.css uses it to add the large profession icons to the skill infobox. I personally find it useful for adding a checkered background behind images to see its transparency. If this was blocked to disallow external content, could it somehow okay local URLs and maybe data: URIs? -Smurf 11:51, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Smurf! I checked about this, and we'll get this excluded. I'll keep you posted on the status. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:32, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
cool, thanks. Looks like it's unblocked now. -Smurf 22:53, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Everytime I try to edit this page, I get an "Internet Explorer Cannot Display The Web Page" thing. I cleared my cache and check my connectivity (which is fine btw), but I am still getting this page. Is it a bug, or just my browser? --Shadowphoenix Please, talk to me; I'm so lonley ;-; 19:52, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Just tried in both FF/IE and both worked fine. --Kakarot Talk 19:56, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Database error

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

    (SQL query hidden)

from within function "SiteStatsUpdate::doUpdate". MySQL returned error "1213: Deadlock found when trying to get lock; try restarting transaction (172.30.129.83)".

Just got the above database error while trying to view this image --Kakarot Talk 02:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Hiya guys! We're aware of this issue, and will be working to resolve what's causing it in the near future. Thanks for the heads up. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:00, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Ummm....

I have no idea if this is a bug in GWW or just my computer, but I logged off of GWW eariler and when I got to my desktop my background was GWW's background.... This is very strange, Any ideas from anyone as to how this happened? --Shadowphoenix Please, talk to me; I'm so lonley ;-; 15:06, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Don't rightclick on the image and select "Set as Background." --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 15:09, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
That is not a wiki bug, as it happened when the wiki was closed. Also please use descriptive section titles. poke | talk 15:21, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Internal Server Error

Whenever I try to view User talk:Gaile Gray/Guild Wars 2 suggestions I get:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, arenaweb@ncsoft.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

It seems other users don't, but the error message suggests the problem is server-side? I can view the user page just fine.Cassie 15:01, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

It basically means the page is to big for your comp. I cannot access the page either :P. --Shadowphoenix Please, talk to me; I'm so lonley ;-; 15:25, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Works for me; basically with that error it is the best to wait and try it again later. poke | talk 15:32, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

missing jpeg images on Quest help screens

I'm currently running the a secondary quest from Gadd's Encampment and cannot open the jpeg image of the current dungeon. The "file name" is listed correctly, but it appears in RED, and does NOT apparently link to anything. I have checked (3) other quest help wiki screens, and have found the same error. Is it just my PC or is something else happening?? Undouble 19:40 30 May 2008 (EDT)

A red link means there's nothing at that destination - in this case, no image has been uploaded. By the way, you can sign your comments by typing ~~~~, which will automatically enter your username and the correct time. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 01:53, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I'm aware of that. Up to now, when you accessed the wiki help screen for ANY quest (Primary or Secondary), a "mini" map of the quest (and best route) was displayed for us "igorant louts" who just caint figur out wher we is sposed to git to". That "feature" of the wiki has, for some reason, disappeared--- thus the "RED" linkage statement. I'm concerned that this "change" is NOT authorized by the Gods of WIKI, but rather, by the denizens of the Internet.71.226.165.182 03:03, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
It's not a bug, quest articles and the images on them are not automatically generated, some quest articles don't have maps because they haven't been uploaded yet, and some quest articles such as Malaquire's Test and Advanced Defense Techniques don't have maps because they don't need them. -- Gordon Ecker 09:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Of course you can help us and upload the map as soon as you finished the quest :) poke | talk 10:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Problem is, I've run this particular dungeon before--- and the map DID exist--- for all (3) levels. Now, the link exists, but finds nothing to upload. So, the question is::: " was this deleted accidently, purposefully, for deliberately???"Undouble 01:36, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Which quest article is it you are referring to so I can check if the map was deleted. --Kakarot Talk 01:41, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Maybe you opened the dungeon article last time and the quest article this time. All the dungeon articles have maps, but most of the dungeon quest articles are missing them. I'm adding map links to the dungeon quest articles right now. -- Gordon Ecker 02:32, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
It's done. -- Gordon Ecker 03:56, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Flooded with "Watched Page" Update Notifications

I have set up my account to email me when certain pages are updated. As the notification email itself says, I should get one email until I visit the watched page. However, I am currently getting an email every time someone updates the page. So in 10 minutes I have 5 emails about my page being updated, even though I've intentionally not viewed the page to test what's going on. :D

I have alerted our IT Team, but would like to know if others are experiencing this issue as well. Thanks. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 21:50, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

This is probably due to the recent slew of vandalism via page moves we've been experiencing, especially on pages that are likely to be watchlisted. Most of the big-name pages are move-protected now, but we're also discussing potential ways to prevent such types of vandalism over at GWW:RFTA. Poke is being cryptic. What happend is that variables didn't work before, so we used special templates in order to make them. The update made variables work properly, which in turn broke the templates. Backsword 00:17, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Uncategorized images

It seems certain images are showing up in the uncategorized images even though they are. At present this affects both both ArenaNet images (3 links) and screenshot images (2 links) for a total of 13 images. It doesn't seem to affect all ArenaNet images or screenshots so it's a bit weird why these images don't work. --Kakarot Talk 23:49, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

We had some vandalism on the ArenaNet image template which would have affected those images; the job queue is around 821 at the moment, so they are probably still updating. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 23:52, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Content that causes issues on the wiki

Hi guys! I just wanted to remind everyone that there are certain types of content that can't really be posted to wiki pages because it makes our web security freak out (I mean a system, not a group of people that are running around in a panic ;)).

Over the past few days, I've gotten emails from IT pointing out a few pages that have been blocked because they were in violation of these criteria. Here are some things that we should all be really mindful to not do. I'll keep this updated with other things I find out over time. If you guys can find a better home for this list so it's more visible, or want me to maybe create a template that you can embed into various places, let me know.

OK, so some no-nos:

  • Object embeds (and any other embed style tags).
    • The site that DominatorMatrix mentioned above had issues because they were trying to put YouTube videos on their guild page (which doesn't work at all on the wiki). For security reasons, we can't allow embedded code from any other websites.
  • Putting ~ in URLs (and using other characters that aren't supported in wiki titles)
    • We ran into issues with several guilds trying to surround their guild tags with tildes in their wiki URLs. Unfortunately, MediaWiki has certain characters that it just rejects when they're used in titles. This causes dead pages, and requires us to manually go in and clean stuff up. And me to get emails, so let's try to avoid that as much as possible :)

As a rule, automatic page blocks are pretty uncommon, and will only occur when something that the system views as critical gets posted to the site. If anyone runs into anything in the future that is throwing strange "not found" errors (you'll know them when you see them), just let me know and I'll track them down.

Thanks a bunch, everyone! Sorry for the confusion over some of this stuff. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

To Emily: Is the character restriction applied to Wiki links only, or is to be imposed over external links also? (by example, when a guild links to their webpage or a forum?).
To everyone... Should we include these restrictions into GWW:NAMING and GWW:GF (and other policies/guidelines if the answer to the above question is affirmative), or is enough with this admin knowledge about this for now?--Fighterdoken 21:46, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Bring it up on the general formatting or the community portal talk pages so this page stays relatively clean. --Pling! \ Brains12 \ Talk 21:50, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm a little confused by the object embeding block since I thought MediaWiki already filtered this stuff out or turned it into plain text (html encoded). Also could we get a list pages that trigger this block, if there is any? I'm worried that like one of the talk pages might have <object> or some other blocked text and a user couldn't edit the page unaware of the blocked text previously there. -Smurf 11:51, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Preventing fix

The url check prevents changes to MediaWiki:Common.css as we use background images for the skill infoboxes. I don't understand the need to prevent that usage on the server-side, as the MediaWiki software has very good methods against such things (in normal articles, it is just parsed as text; in user css it only applies to the users alone and for the MediaWiki css it can only be edited by sysops). Same applies to the javascript: syntax.
While there are methods you can still use that in javascript, you cannot split it in CSS so we cannot fix our styles for the new MediaWiki style "modern" (including all other edits to the css file). poke | talk 17:07, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, this doesn't seem necessary to me either. I'll put in the request to see if we can exclude this file. Thanks for the heads up, Poke. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:58, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Actually I don't see a need to have that check on any page, as people won't be able to use it inside of articles; instead it is disturbing even when you are talking about it, as you always have to split it with nowiki-tags or something like that. However thank you, Emily :) poke | talk 16:48, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Unviewable Image problem

Not sure if this is a wiki bug but this image was uploaded around seven hours ago and still appears to be a Corrupt or unviewable image, hence the delete tag. However the image seems to work just fine on the guild page that it was uploaded for, this appears to happen both for myself and for DominatorMatrix. --Kakarot Talk 04:00, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

caching issues

it's happening more and more often that template-using (usually the templates themselves) pages look totally broken, but in preview everything is fine. then, after saving without actually editing anything, it works. i suppose it's because of server cache, since ctrl+f5 doesn't solve the problem. it's not really terrible, but it's an unnecessary nuisance here. - Y0_ich_halt User Y0 ich halt sig.jpg 16:44, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

No problem here. However, the pagew is 789 kilobytes in size, which just may be the problem. Backsword 16:24, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Same as Backsword, probably just the size of the page causing a problem. --Kakarot Talk 16:27, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Yep, it's definitely because of the size of the page. My browser has issues just hitting that page. I think that for the time being, this should be archived and broken into chunks. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:25, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Upload/page save problems

It seems that recently around 10pm pdt, there is some issue if people are uploading pictures, making changes. Browsing is fine, RC loads ok, but doesn't register any changes. If you try to save an edit, or upload an image, you either get timed out, or a 'page cannot be displayed' error. The RC will show red links for images being uploaded. It has lasted for as long as an hour, and eventually, things seem to catch up, and the RC will show all sorts of changes that were made during that time. It's really strange to watch the RC when it's happening. I was wondering if there was some sort of regularly scheduled maintenance/backup that is done around that time of day that could be mentioned somewhere.(edit) Tonight it lasted approximately 40 minutes.--Wyn's Talk page Wynthyst 05:18, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I've noticed that happen before, not too sure the exact time but it was late in the night my time which I think is maybe one or two hours different than your time Wyn. Didn't notice anything last night although I wasn't on as much as normal at that time. --Kakarot Talk 14:01, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Even though I didn't upload anything, I would also see these red link images in RC, but when I check in Special:Newimages I could see them clearly. --TalkPeople of Antioch 18:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
It is happening again tonight, it started just before 10 pm pacific time and it is now 10:45pm pdt and I am still unable to save an edit, and the last edit on the RC was from 39 minutes ago.(edit) ok.. this edit went through finally. Total of 52 minutes trying to post something.--Wyn's Talk page Wynthyst 05:47, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

I have seen something simmilar, mostly with edit conflicts not showing while tagging pages (which makes my edits invisible), or on talk pages (wich causes ident mistakes).--Fighterdoken 18:51, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
The new version of MediaWiki handles edits differently creating this. Hopefully it will be resolved with the next update. Until then I think we are stuck with it.--Wyn's Talk page Wynthyst 05:10, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Monobook log out

When I try to edit my monobook, to get rid of purge since it applies to the new clock, I keep getting logged out and thus unable to edit my monobook. I have cookies enabled, and I'm using FF3 on Vista. I'm fine basically everywhere else. The only way I could edit the page, is by viewing the history and editing from there. Then I was suddenly relogged in. Strange. After I edited the monobook, when I hit the clock again, I was magically logged in again, but logged out when I hit "User page" to go back to it without hitting the back button. --TalkPeople of Antioch 18:41, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
