I have a question regarding..

Well, I made some templates yesterday and Finally got the right image These templates are smileys. The thing is I need some input about the fact that they're smileys and should be used on on "Talk pages" , is there any way to make them only for "Talk pages"?. I'm also concerned about people spamming them, once again can you please give me your input, thank you 120px-Face-grin.svg.png Blood User Blood234 Blood sig icon arg.png 01:21, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

There isn't a way to restrict the usage of a template to a specific namespace, bar telling people not to. Anyway, I don't see why one would use this on a non-talk page or non-userpage. If someone mentioned those templates being spammed, it would be in reference to how often they'd be used on talk pages -- see how the wub template has been used as spam. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 01:24, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

GW2 wiki

Hello. I'm not sure if you're the appropriate person to direct this to, and even less sure if ArenaNet is anything but perfectly satisfied with the direction this wiki has gone since you set it up. Anyway, if you wish it had developed better, or are okay with it but wish to give users who weren't around when it was started and aren't willing to kiss the backsides of those who were, please consider re-creating the GW2wiki without simply moving the GW wiki leadership over there (including some whose only claim to leadership is that they were an admin on the GW wiki at some time in the past). Otherwise it just recreates the same status quo and prevents any significant change in methods or management. Thanks in advance for your consideration and I continue to hope for the success of GW2. -- Inspired to ____ 02:56, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

First, what advantage would starting the Guild Wars 2 wiki over from scratch have over just replacing the sysops? Second, of the ten grandfathered sysops and bureaucrats, six: Barek, Gares Redstorm, LordBiro, Rainith, Tanaric and Xasxas256 have passed reconfirmations, and the other four: Fyren, Gem, Karlos and Rezyk, have resigned. Third, on the Guild Wars 2 wiki, there seems to be a general concensus that policy should not be finalized until some point after release. -- Gordon Ecker 03:36, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Fourth, they already won the trust and respect of the entire community (Some more than one community). Who better to run the wiki? Lord Belar 03:40, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
While it's true that GW2W is currently run on the whims of the bcrats, this is not an issue. There simply isn't much to run. THe bcrats aren't even active, and so is most others. Once the wiki becomes more 'alive', we'll have to pick a foundational policy. But that is of no issue now. Backsword 03:58, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Appeal to fear. That is all. User Defiant Elements Sig Image.JPG *Defiant Elements* +talk 04:09, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Fear? Okay...whatever. Point is it looks like a wiki already set with people who may not even ever play the game. And given the self perpetuating nature of the policies, etc. there is only the slightest chance of a change after the fact. So, yes, it's a game that's probably a year or more off and yet for some reason, that can only really be explained as to maintain the status quo, we already have an official wiki set up. -- Inspired to ____ 04:25, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
This wiki's policies are convenient as a rough guideline for sysop behaviour on the Guild Wars 2 wiki pending the implementation of actual policies. There was considerable policy divergence between this wiki and GuildWiki because the community overlap was far from complete, and because some of the users from GuildWiki wanted to avoid perceived flaws in GuildWiki's policies. I suspect that the same thing will happen on the Guild Wars 2 wiki when it becomes more active. -- Gordon Ecker 05:15, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
You're basing your assertion that we should "re-creat[e] the GW2wiki without simply moving the GW wiki leadership over there" on the faulty premise that, if we don't, the GW2wiki will stagnate. Because your premise is intended to produce "fear," it is possible to appropriately label your statement an "appeal to fear." In other words, I read your statement as saying: wiki stagnation is something to be feared/avoided, grandfathering the administrators will cause GW2wiki to stagnate, therefore you shouldn't grandfather the administrators. However, you provide no evidence that grandfathering the administrators will necessarily cause wiki stagnation. Thus, appeal to fear. Indeed, I tend to agree with Gordon that the likely culture clash produced by the infusion of GWikiers will produce a good deal of change. On the other hand, providing no explanation on my first go-around was, admittedly, lame, so I apologize for that. User Defiant Elements Sig Image.JPG *Defiant Elements* +talk 05:57, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
O ye of little faith ;) did you honestly think that any of the current admins would vehemently oppose any idea of them having to relinquish their duties on GW2W that you had to approach Emily directly? If you'd requested me to step down as a sysop over there because I'm not over there at all, I'd be happy to, since I won't bother with that wiki until the game is released. And if you're hoping to have a fresh start, well, you'll find that many people simply love trying to copy their favorite policies over to GW2W from GuildWiki, GWW, PvXwiki, or Wikipedia. It's just simpler for people to copy something as the basis for a starting point than it is to start from scratch. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 11:47, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi guys...I'm going to archive this because I'd really prefer to stay out of wiki politics if possible :) As we've mentioned before, we want the wikis to be completely run by the community, with us being here to support everyone technically and with information about the game. Our stepping in and trying to mandate the way that things should be run is not something we intend to do, since it would destroy the spirit of the wiki as an organic community. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:42, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Upgrade coming!!!!

Hi guys! I wanted to let you know that our new wiki hardware has come in and all of our internal testing with the new equipment is complete. We will be performing an upgrade to the site this Wednesday, October 1 from 3:00 AM Pacific until 7:00 AM Pacific. During this time, the wiki will most likely be down. I'm going to go ahead and post a notice on the main website in the morning, but I wanted to let you know a bit early. I'm guessing we'll want to have a notice on the front page warning people of the downtime :) Anyways, just let me know if there are any questions! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 02:19, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't have any specific questions about the upgrade per say, but there are several tech requests that have been there for awhile now, and I was wondering if any/all of them would be incorporated in this upgrade?--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 03:03, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi Wyn...we'll need to wait until the next version upgrade to make those changes, as the wiki is currently version 1.12. There are plans to upgrade the software, but we're not going to roll that update into this upgrade. We want to make sure everything goes well without throwing an additional variable into the mix. I'll follow up with the team to see when they'd like to schedule a full version upgrade. There was talk about waiting until the 1.14 version release, but if there are pending requests like Lucene and the newest batch of requests that hinge on 1.13+, I can definitely raise that point. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:07, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Emily, whenever I enter GWW using the ingame /wiki command, I am logged in with my IP instead of my user profile, even though I checked the "Remember my login on this computer" box in my preferences. Is this a bug in the new wiki version? WhyUser talk:Why Are We Fighting 21:36, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Hm, I don't believe that this should occur more than once at the most. How many times has it required you to re-log in today? I'll check with the team to see if there could be any reasons for this. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:46, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I have actually the same. Even before the last GWW update, I had that. I think it is caused by the fact that I don't have a fixed IP address. You should check your connection preferences, there you can see if you have a fixed IP or that it's automatically assigned by the network. In the latter case, your IP can change once in a while and the GWW log-in won't recognise you logging in from the same computer. Another possibility is that the cookie with the log-in was removed from your computer after your last log-in. That removes the username/password combination from sites and won't allow automatical log-ins then. Hope this helps out (and correct me when wrong, Emily). Juriaan Cuthalion 21:47, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
It is very odd; When I enter GWW via my browser, I'm logged in as Why Are We Fighting, and I can browse the wiki freely while still being logged in, but if I then use the /wiki command in Guild Wars, a new tab is opened, in which I am not logged in. Also, if I start browsing the wiki from this tab, each new page I open will list my IP at the top-right corner of the screen. When I then go to my other tab, the one which I opened before using /wiki, and browse the wiki, every page I visit from that first tab will list me as logged in as Why Are We Fighting. WhyUser talk:Why Are We Fighting 21:54, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Did you go to www.wiki.guildwars.com from your browser? The /wiki command (and links from the Guild Wars website) takes you to wiki.guildwars.com (without the www.), where you might not be logged in. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 21:57, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
(ecx500-something)Works fine for me. Please note that the in-game /wiki command takes you to "wiki.guildwars.com", so if you normally browse "www.wiki.guildwars.com" (some people do, though I've never understood why), even though it goes to the same servers, the login cookie from one will not be recognized on the other. - Tanetris 21:59, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, that might be the issue. Indeed, when I browse for wiki.guildwars.com I am not logged in. Odd I never noticed it before. WhyUser talk:Why Are We Fighting 22:02, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Quick downtime

Hi guys! I've been notified that there's a fairly serious security update we'll need to do to the wiki immediately, which fixes an issue with the version of MediaWiki we're running. This will take the site down for about five minutes. Sorry for the short notice! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:12, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Oof, yes...that was longer than we'd all predicted and caused quite the flurry over here. We'll be monitoring the site closely throughout the night to make sure everything levels out. Again, we apologize for the unexpected downtime. Sometimes issues are just impossible to predict, even when you test changes beforehand. I feel for everyone, though. Whenever the wiki goes down for any reason I feel like someone pacing around in a hospital waiting room :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:19, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Could it be that we are back to the version from before this update? I think I saw 1.12.1 in between of the update, but now we are back to 1.12.0.
Btw. you should have visited us in IRC, it was really ... weird/funny/don't know a good word to describe the mix between despair, boredom and insanity xD poke | talk 23:21, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Eep, I honestly don't know! I'll check on that for you as soon as my IT wiki guy comes back from idle. I have a feeling that he's still working on things behind the scene...he was crazy busy today with everything going on.
Comically, I actually mentioned the IRC channel to Regina in the lunch room this afternoon when I was grabbing coffee...if I'd remembered the address I may have popped in just to say something about what was going on. As a rule, I tend to stay away from channels during the day, though. I've been hectically busy lately and I'm an IRC junkie by nature, so I decided to just avoid that temptation altogether. I have more than enough on my brain already :) I heard you guys were getting the shakes, though. I can only imagine. I bet that some of our recent traffic congestion problems came from thousands of wiki addicts frantically mashing F5 as fast as they could. I could hear the poor wiki crying in pain from here :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:30, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
I had a script reloading the main page every 30s :P So I watched the time the wiki was going to be working increasing two times ^^ (btw. CST has DST active atm, so it would be CDT).
Also the irc channel is #gww@irc.gamesurge.net - we would be happy to see you some time ^^ poke | talk 23:38, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Awesome...thanks! By the way, I checked with my poor contact when he came back, and he mentioned that there was a version rollback. I guess this fix made some crazy changes to our old friend caching, which started the big snowball of issues today. We're most likely going to be doing a version upgrade in the near future, though, so we'll be leaving the 1.12's behind soon. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:03, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Emily! I made this image yesterday and linked it on the main page to see if people thought it would be a good idea to put this up. here is that discussion. People seem to like the idea, but I think you are the one that has to change the image. I just wanted to ask if it was possible to put that image, or a similar image, up as the logo temporarly for halloween (24th-31st); or would you all rather not do that? Thanks! --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 15:48, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

To expand a bit: We are currently discussing a make over of the main page for halloween. Apart from changing the Mainpage itself, Shadowphoenix proposed to change the wiki logo (in the upper left corner) during that period. That logo can not be changed by any wiki user, only by accessing the database directly. So if we decide to change that logo, we would need your help in changing the database at the start and end of halloween. --Xeeron 15:52, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Also if you do that, could you ask one of the designers to pick up Shadowphoenix' idea and create the image based on the original files of our current one? Shadowphoenix' version is a bit downscaled and you can see rests of the current logo (and the background of course ^^), so a fine transparent version would be really great :) poke | talk 16:38, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
I believe Shadowphoenix has gotten the original transparent image to work with now. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:40, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Here is the new High quality one, with a transparent background :) --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 16:56, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
That's awesome, Shadow! Comically, I think you guys are on the same brainwave with AJ (one of our graphic designers) right now. I just saw something he's been working on and it looks pretty darn close. As far as the logo goes, sure. I wouldn't mind spicing things up for Halloween. Just let me know when you guys would want to decorate and I'll see what we can do :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:33, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Decorating for Halloween

I believe we have decided to put the Halloween version of the mainpage up effective the 23rd (when the game decorations go up), so if you could get the wiki logo changed then, as was discussed in an archived post, that would be great. I don't know if you are planning to use Shadowphoenix's design, or if the designers there have come up with something else. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 23:45, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

I talked with folks about this today, and it seems like it will be no problem to use whatever logo you guys decide you'd like up during the seasonal time. Unfortunately, our team is crunched, so we won't be able to get a new logo created ourselves. If this is Shadow's that works for me. You guys just decide what you want up there, pass me a link, and I'll get it in place on the 23rd :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:07, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

It actually appears that more people prefer Shadowphoenix's version, so I've removed mine. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 18:01, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
Could you please, if you have time, put the Halloween logo up a little bit before or a little bit after the decorations go live? Thanks! --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 13:07, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

For one thing, Emily doesn't deal with the wiki pages themselves, other than to post like any other user. I don't understand how there could be anything embedded within that page, the code is clean, and you can't add any kind of software etc. to it. You may wish to scan your computer. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:51, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: Hm thought I already did this

You did, in fact, do it already. If you scan recent changes you'll notice someone (accidentally I assume) thought the original was vandalism and tagged it for deletion. Subsequently, it was speedily wiped out. Lojiin 22:48, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah :) I noticed that after the fact. It's funny because when build notes are ready to go, I have to scramble to get them live on half a dozen sites, so sometimes my brain goes into auto pilot. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
So what you're saying, really, is "An easy way to toy with Emily's head is to 'accidentally' cause such pages to vanish from time to time?" :D Lojiin 22:52, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
That would definitely do it....lol. I'm sure at the very least you could get me to repeatedly post something over and over before I realized that someone was messing with me. I'd prefer if people didn't try that because it would be frustrating if it became a habit :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:54, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah sry it was me. When I clicked on d page I saw a bunch of random letters and thought it was the usual monthly vandalism. I tagged it for speedy deletion. Wiki issues

Hi guys! I'm sorry for the sudden downtime. We're currently working to restore everything back to it's normal state. I'm going through reporting issues right now. I see the one with ImageMagick being unable to display thumbs properly. Hi again guys! I just wanted to let you know that we're still looking into what's causing the skill anim subpage issues. We don't see any links between it's issues and tonight's downtime, so we're thinking that this may be a problem that was actually happening before tonight (or was about to). We're going to keep trying to figure out what's going on with the page, and I'll keep you updated with what I hear back. You may not hear from me again tonight since it's close to midnight and I need sleep too, but I'll follow up with you as soon as I learn more tomorrow. Thanks for your patience (and quit making pages that big...yer breakin' the wiki. Eesh! =P) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 07:50, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
"so we're thinking that this may be a problem that was actually happening before tonight" - it was like that already when it was created ;) Probably too many images for the server, to check/resize (server-side)/display. poke | talk 07:55, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Isn't everything before midnight? Ɲoɕʈɋɽɕɧ 08:45, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Not making these big pages listing all skill animations is easy, but I'm concerned about server load with the individual animations themselves. I don't expect people to try to open all 1000+ animations at the same time, and we won't have any page in the mainspace with more than one, but they are multiple large image files, many with more than 1 mb. We could just host all the images externally and make all the links into external ones, but that's far less reliable (and less pretty, too : P) than hosting the files inside the wiki. The issues aren't only with the skill animations, there are other images problems as well. Some images seem to have just disappeared and are creating errors here, I would guess they didn't get restored, and it appears to be impossible to upload images atm as I just reported on the Report a wiki bug page. (I wish you guys would take your bug reports there instead of directly to Emily. I thought that's what that page is for :P) --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:11, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
I went here and got a weird error: "Undefined variable: flags in /home/httpd/guildwars/en/includes/LoadBalancer.php" Is it just me or can someone else reproduce this error? --JonTheMon 14:48, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Hiya guys! I'm looking into all of these reports now. I'm trying to replicate them, and I'm passing them along to the team as we speak. Thanks for your patience! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:56, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Its only a diff error, so its not that big of a problem. Could be someone not coding correctly on the page. Dominator Matrix 21:03, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
No, samething happened when I tried to view my Holiday Logo Gallery earlier, and I am pretty sure the coding there is just fine... --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 21:07, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Same User Great Darkwolf Wiki Error.jpg I would get this error upon attempting to access any non-special page for a period of 10-15 minsutes. — Wolf User Great Darkwolf User Image paw.png 00:20, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks guys! The team is aware of this happening, and are working to figure out what's going on. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:12, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Just to let you know, I have replaced the image that was giving me problems for expediency. But that doesn't mean the problem is fixed. Earlier I found several of the skill icons were also missing. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 01:15, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Hi again all! I've received word that the deadlock issue should be resolved. If anyone else sees it happen, please let me know right away. Thanks again! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 02:00, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Ehmm....not loading pages at various time, not seeing comments, no bars for shortcuts to adding sigs etc. Wiki is as reliable as gwguru atm? --Silverleaf User Silverleaf sig.pngDon't assume, ask! 13:27, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
