Priest of Balthazar "Unlock Items"[edit]

There are discrepencies between the game and wiki when it comes to item unlocks. Examples - wiki lists the Rune of Recovery and Prismatic Insignia as being core, but neither is listed at the Priest of Balthazar on an account without Nightfall. I got out my main account which has all three chapters and EotN and made a list of every item listed under the Priest's "Unlock Item" tab. Then I took my two alt accounts (one with only Prophecies, another with Prophecies and Factions,) checked the Priest and marked which items were and were not available. I don't have an account that has EotN without NF to check if adding EotN fills in some of the items. I'm pretty sure EotN did not add any new item upgrade options, so I'm not worried about checking an account that has NF but not EotN.

The following list shows where I find differences (or surprising lack of difference) in the Priest's lists for one or both of my alternate accounts.

For the record, I'm not talking about locked vs. unlocked items. I'm talking about the lists of things that could be unlocked, regardless of whether or not my alt. accounts have unlocked them yet.

  • Runes and Insignia
    • Common
      • Rune of Recovery - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions
      • Rune of Restoration - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions
      • Rune of Clarity - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions
      • Rune of Purity - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions
    • Ranger
      • Earthbound Insignia - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions (I have seen this insignia drop on runed armor in Prophecies and Nightfall.)
      • Beastmaster's Insignia - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions (I have seen this insignia drop on runed armor in Prophecies.)
    • Monk
      • Anchorite's Insignia - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions (I have seen this insignia drop on runed armor in Prophecies.)
    • Necromancer
      • Undertaker's Insignia - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions (I have seen this insignia drop on runed armor in Nightfall and Factions.)
    • Mesmer
      • Artificer's Insignia - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions (I have seen this insignia drop on runed armor in Prophecies.)
      • Prodigy's Insignia - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions (I have seen this insignia drop on runed armor in Prophecies.)
    • Elementalist
      • Prismatic Insignia - listed as core on this wiki, appears neither for Prophecies or Factions (I have seen this insignia drop on runed armor in Prophecies and Factions.)
    • Assassin
    • Ritualist
      • Shaman's Insignia, Ghost Forge Insignia, and Mystic's Insignia do appear in the list for a Prophecies-only account, which is not what I'd expect. The Ritualist runes do not appear for a Prophecies-only account, which is what I'd expect. Would the Ritualist runes be listed on an account with only Prophecies and EotN, given that such an account could have Xandra unlocked?
    • Paragon
      • Neither an account with only Prophecies or one with only Prophecies and Factions even has a Paragon section. This is not surprising. However, would adding EotN and not NF to such an account unlock any Paragon runes or insignia given that such an account could have Hayda unlocked?
    • Dervish
      • Neither an account with only Prophecies or one with only Prophecies and Factions even has a Dervish section. This is not surprising. However, would adding EotN and not NF to such an account unlock any Paragon runes or insignia given that such an account could have Kahmu unlocked?
  • Sword, Axe, Hammer, and Bow mod sections - no differences, no surprises
  • Staff Heads and Staff Wrappings - These discrepancies are quite odd, as only some of the new staff mods introduced with Nightfall are missing.
  • Dagger Tangs and Dagger Handles - There are no surprises here, for an account with Factions has all the dagger mods listed while an account with only Prophecies does not. I have the following questions.
    • Would an account without Factions but with Nightfall and/or EotN get these items available in the lists, given that daggers can drop in NF and EotN and that EotN could unlock Anton?
    • The existing Dagger Tang and Dagger Handle articles list them as PvP gear. If they only unlock with a Factions account, should that be cleared up?
  • Scythe Snathes and Scythe Grips - There are no surprises here, for neither a Prophecies nor Prophecies/Factions account has anything listed here. I have the following questions.
    • Would an account without Nightfall but with EotN get these items available in the lists, given that scythes can drop in EotN?
    • The existing Scythe Snathe and Scythe Grip articles list them as PvP gear. If they only unlock with a Nightfall account, should that be cleared up?
  • Spearheads and Spear Grips - There are no surprises here, for neither a Prophecies nor Prophecies/Factions account has anything listed here. I have the following questions.
    • Would an account without Nightfall but with EotN get these items available in the lists, given that spears can drop in EotN?
    • The existing Spearhead and Spear Grip articles list them as PvP gear. If they only unlock with a Nightfall account, should that be cleared up?
  • Focus Cores and Shield Handles - Like with staff mods, these discrepancies seem odd because only some of the mods introduced with NF are missing.
  • Wand Wrappings
    • both wrappings are listed as NF and EotN on this wiki, but do appear on lists for both Prophecies-only and Prophecies/Factions accounts.
  • Inscriptions - Both the Prophecies-only and the Prophecies/Factions account were missing the same inscriptions from their list. I've listed them all here to highlight the odd pattern of what is and isn't missing. Would adding EotN to an account without NF make more or all of the missing inscriptions available?
    • Strength and Honor (15^50) - available on Prophecies and Prophecies/Factions accounts
    • Guided by Fate (15wE) - available on Prophecies and Prophecies/Factions accounts
    • Dance with Death (15St) - available on Prophecies and Prophecies/Factions accounts
    • To the Pain! (15/-10) - available on Prophecies and Prophecies/Factions accounts
    • Brawn over Brains (15/-5) - available on Prophecies and Prophecies/Factions accounts
    • Too Much Information (15vH) - available on Prophecies and Prophecies/Factions accounts

I know some of the items that don't appear for accounts without NF or EotN make sense. However, it seems to me like a lot of items I've mentioned should be core and are actually not (10vsFire inscriptions, condition runes because vitae and attunement runes are, etc.)

It'd be great to hear from ANet if any of this is a bug/mistake or if it's all just as they intended. If they meant for 10vsSlashing inscriptions, for example, to be core then they should make them available for all accounts.

It would be nice to get someone who has an account with EotN but without NF to check the things I can't.

Finally, I think some of the wiki articles for these items need to be updated or at least get notes about availability.

I started looking at this because I've seen two recent Guru threads from people asking why they had missing items at the Priest when it turned out they didn't have NF on their accounts. In both cases, they seemed confused because something here implied the item in question was "core."

Releases of Factions, NF, and EOTN added insignias to core professions. I can't remember which campaign they all came from. I think someone just got a little edit fever and listed all (or most) of the core insignias as core. Nice job catching this. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 04:02, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
When I first put a link to this up on "Ask a wiki question," here poke mentioned that there used to be different definitions of "core," so that could help explain it. Being rather newbish to wiki organization it took me a while (and some help,) but I have now asked Gaile for an official response on her talk page. She says she'll look into it. I'll give it a while to see if any of it is deemed a bug and fixed. It would certainly be interesting to know the history of how the wiki vs. game split happened, but I'd say the most important result of all this is that wiki documentation matches the game eventually. I can't take much credit here; I may have been the first to write it up like this and make much noise about it on wiki, but I think some of the folks starting those q/a and bug threads on Guru get the credit for actually finding it. I'd never have thought to look if not for them. I can't imagine many people do "serious" PvP on an account without access to everything. Given the popularity of farming the Zaishen for daily Balth faction and the apparent increase in new GW players starting with only one campaign, though, I can see how this could be more than just a trivial issue for some. They both say that all of these upgrade unlocks are either core, from Factions or from Nightfall. No unlocks come from EotN. Neither answered the, "does any of this need to be patched?" questions, so I think it's safe to assume this is the way it's all going to keep working. So, if something doesn't show up for an account with Factions and without Nightfall, then that item is a Nightfall unlock. Their responses lead me to believe there is no overlap where a non-core item would unlock with either Factions or Nightfall. LicensedLuny 04:54, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
