Public post-mortem
Excuse me if this isn't in the right place, but I didn't know where else to put it (since you are the community manager).
Anyway, my question: Will there ever be a public post-mortem about guildwars? If I recall correctly you've already done one internally, but I've never actually seen it yet. Pulpulpullie 11:44, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- What do you mean with 'port-mortem'. This is the first time I see the expression used with a video game. MithTalk 15:13, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- Where they "dissect" what they did wrong, what they did right, etc. Quick example, from a google search. -- FreedomBound 15:25, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- In a business context they're also known as "Post-Implementation Reviews" and as FB says they're usually a discussion what went well and what went badly in developing and implementation but they also often include feedback from customers about what was produced. Mr J 15:32, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

- That's certainly an interesting idea. I've seen public post-mortems related to other games, but mostly these are developer-oriented and presented at professional conferences like the Game Developers Conference or published in trade magazines, like Game Developer. I do believe that in several recent interviews about GW2, our designers have talked about the strengths weaknesses of the original Guild Wars, and this sort of touches on the idea behind a post mortem. At this time, there are no plans to release an in-depth post mortem publicly. --Regina Buenaobra 00:56, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
- That's a shame. I'll do one myself sometime, I have this cool new text editor that comes with a minimap that I want to try out. –Jette 01:06, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Guild Wars Book Series
Regina, any word on how the Book Series is progressing? Book one is supposed to be released in Late February or Early March if I remember correctly; however, we haven't heard a thing about the book since PAX. Thanks. --Malchior Devenholm 18:12, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- The release date has been updated by the publisher. See Guild Wars 2 and the talk page. -- FreedomBound 18:16, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Guild Wars 2 Release Date
Regina,Not sure if this goes here but Gamestop is allowing you to reserve Guild Wars 2. I talked to an employee and they say they have a release date of November 3rd. True,Yes/No/Maybe? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.220.50.18 (talk).

XTH
Hi, sorry to beat a dead horse but, has there been any movement on the XTH? 24.188.207.20 05:07, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- No. It's over. --Boro 13:15, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- If there was, they'd say something... They mentioned at one point that they have the record of the reward points for the last month it ran, and will give them out eventually, they must "fix it" before they can distribute points, whatever that means. The official story is that they still hope to work on it once time allows, but it's currently pretty far down on the to-do list, so yeah. Consider it dead indefinitely. Rose Of Kali 16:47, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- I used to push this once a month. Just do as I have and become disillusioned. The XTH is dead. It's been over 7 months since they removed it, it's not coming back. Let it go. Karate Jesus 17:06, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- It'd be nice if they came forward and said it. -Auron 17:07, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

- Since they implemented these new policies of "being more open", duh. is for Raine, etc. 18:04, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- I believe this approach is similar to the TA/HB removal: there was never an official in-game note about it, just the announcement of the new arena. It's probably bad PR/marketing to remind the masses of casual players that they are removing features, as most don't even remember it.--Sensei | talk 18:24, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- PS: I think the silent end of the XTH came the day the NPC was removed from temple.--Sensei | talk 18:26, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- Tbh, at this point I think the people who actually care about the XTH would just love to hear an answer one way or the other. Removing a game feature, then after 4 months saying that they've narrowed down the problem and have our TRPs, then after another 3 months continue to say nothing.....is a bit much. Just telling us the truth at this point would be nice. Karate Jesus 18:29, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
- But they did. They said it's ON the list, just kind of far down, so they may not get around to it, like ever. They should just write it off and stop teasing us with hope and give us the last month's points (May was it?) and call it a day. <_< Rose Of Kali 14:20, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Can we just get a "There's nothing I can tell you yet" or "The XTH is officially down for good" now? I'm tired of waiting on this thread. Karate Jesus 20:05, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Not until I get my RP from 4-5 months ago. Can I have my points please? -Drakora 20:08, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- If XTH is never coming back, maybe they need to nerf the entire zkey thing in general? I'm no hard core PvP but it just doesn't seem that exceptional anymore to be successful in high-end. All the guilds have been around forever, everyone is extremely good at what they do in those guilds, they're set up with Vent and working relationships that allow for easy communication and cooperation. It's like going to work and being used to what you do there. So people are reeling in huge ass loads of money that no one could realistically hope to work for in PvE. It's especially bad since even if I was willing to enter the PvP scene because I wanted to get ranks and money or whatever, you can't catch up to the best guilds and good luck getting a decent spot in one. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 21:29, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Very little of that just made sense. Are you suggesting that good PvP guilds make more money than PvE farmers? Because you would be highly mistaken. Ectos are worth more than zkeys. Ask Wasabi, after all, he owns a former PvP guild.... Karate Jesus 22:10, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well, woops I guess. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 00:50, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- As it is you can still get Zkeys without PvP via the Zcoins LynxRavenRaide 21:11, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to make not of something interesting. Since I posted this question, two things have happened: 1. aNet has not responded (which I assumed they wouldn't) and 2. the note about the impending fix for XTH was removed from the "Upcoming changes..." page. I'm assuming that by removing it, we're being told that XTH is so far down the list that it simply wont be addressed. A lot of you had some very sound perspectives. I didn't bring this point up again because I'm clinging to the hope that XTH will be fixed, as indicated by one of the individuals who responded. Instead, I asked simply out of curiosity. Having been away from GW for more than 6 months, I was curious to find out how much progress they made on the issues that were outstanding when I left the game. 24.188.207.20 00:34, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Windows 7 and DirectX 11
Maybe this has already been discussed previously, but I was reading this article and I got to thinking that this all started to come out about a year into development of GW2 (if memory serves). Did that complicate things at all for you guys? Did you have to change course at all in realizing how different things were going to be under this new set up? Could this help explain to some players why development has taken longer than most people (at least within the player base) originally expected? I'm mostly just curious, and am also wondering to what extent GW2 is going to take advantage of the new system(s) in Windows 7 and DirectX 11. (Satanael | talk) 15:52, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- Easy: Both systems suck, so they don't use them. --Boro 16:06, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- Don't talk about things you don't know about. Win7 is an improvement over Vista and enables much more options for your hardware and software. Too bad it is chained to a limited operating system. Especially DX 11: the improvement since DX 9 is significant, and if you take out OpenGL of the picture it's a worthy engine. Anyway the DX11 supported cards are only two months old, so don't expect much. Too bad DX 11 is stuck to the more recent M$ system. -- Karasu (talk) 18:42, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- Boro in his usual repertoire... Anyway, I'd be thrilled if they took decent advantage of DX10, forget DX11. Why? Because the expectation for GW2, just like GW1, is that it will run well (not just "fairly playable") on average machines, not gaming rigs. Save DX11 for "Halo 7" or whatevery they'll be at by then. But I guess we can wait and see if Regina has something to say about this. Rose Of Kali 22:10, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- DX10 is barely used already. PhysX? Just a few games. It will take a bit of time for DX10 and 11 to be widely used, since many people stick to XP afraid of W7 being anything like Vista. Many games come with DX9 and DX10 versions, like Assassin's Creed. I wonder wich one will be the case for the GW2 client. DX10/11, DX9, multiple support? MithTalk 23:33, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

- We aren't ready to discuss system or OS requirements, or the challenges faced with developing for an OS. To my knowledge, operating system considerations have played little or no role in the length of time GW2 is taking for development. As most informed gamers are aware, it takes between 4 - 6 (or 4 - 7) years to create an MMORPG from the ground up. Guild Wars 2 isn't really unusual in terms of its length of development. Even AAA console games can take at least 3 years to develop. --Regina Buenaobra 20:49, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Keyloggers and protection against them
I don't know what is Arena Net's posture towards keyloggers, but I am willing to bet they are strongly against them, since those programs are a constant cause of account theft; given this speculation, has Arena Net ever considered this software? Several other companies (And their games) already have agreements or are supported by the software. I'm sorry if this has been brought up already. -- Large 19:01, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

- Buy a USB expansion card and install it and if you don't have an extra slot, then you wouldn't have access to a more secure account. I would buy one if they offer it for Guild Wars. Zehnchu 03:28, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
