Talk:Ruins of Morah
Difficulty[edit]
worst mission in NF. too many adds to master this easily. take 2 aspirin and waste 3 hours of your life. dont even try to solo this for masters.Palewook 03:07, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- Not true. Tried a few things last night for around an hour. Nothing worked. This morning, I tried Ursan Blessing and flagged everyone near the entrance after the monk fight. Killed everything that spawned or wandered up there, then focused on Varesh. Masters with only H/H at 6:45. --67.191.222.19 17:06, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- uh... this is a farily easy mission imo o.O - Y0_ich_halt 17:24, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Jennar's Hoard is way worse than this. Just keep by the entrance after Varesh goes paragon and don't move past the first spawn point until it runs dry. Varesh is only dangerous if there are too many Torment demons nearby. - HeWhoIsPale 17:31, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- there's no problem at all if you have one of the mentioned anti-all assassins that knows how to play. now just tell your monk to remove Scourge Enchantment if someone hexes that assassin and all torment creatures are dead in no time. - Y0_ich_halt 17:47, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Fair enough, but I speak from my experience of HH'ing pretty much exclusively since a few months after Factions released. - HeWhoIsPale 17:58, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- and what's that supposed to mean? did i oppose you in any way that you need to justify yourself? and what does hhing have to do with this? - Y0_ich_halt 18:05, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry if I came off justifying. The first person mentioned this mission being impossible for masters with HH, and I was responding with the general tactic that worked with it for me. I read your post as having a Human play the Assassin and/or Monk for the mission to be easy, and I was merely pointing out my lack of knowledge for an efficient solution that would require a human team. - HeWhoIsPale 18:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- kay. oh, i didn't have any humans... i was that assassin myself XD - Y0_ich_halt 18:30, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Easy as pie with this team, and I even got the chance to go AFK for snackage while the H/H handled Varesh for me until I got back. Of course, going AFK cost me Masters, but I'm not worried about that for a silly farming toon (nor am I concerned with using pro builds, because laziness = win :P). http://i22.tinypic.com/2wpk00i.jpg Faer 08:34, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks mate, that pic helped a lot, if I couldn't do it with normal team I would gotten it run. :P--78.146.166.99 22:46, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
- I did this mission with hero/hench too. Using three Monks(1 hero,2 hench), 1 paragon Hero(Required for mission),1 MM hero(because I like Livia, besides minions distract enemies, makes you easier to hit them,1 warrior hench and 1 holy Hecnh.
- I became Assassin/Monk with healing signet, heal party,Bane signet, Castigation Signet, Spear of light, Lightbringer's Gaze and EOTN Skills :Pain Inverter, Ursan Blessing. !st Iquickly kiled the three clerics and pull Verish to one of the opposite gates and finish her off as Ursan. Then I went a little slow and start pulling and killing the spawns(tormented creatures). After killing 6/8 og them I pulled Verish. The minions and henchis were distracting her while I used pain inverter, lightbringer's gaze and Holy Damage on her. We her health is dropped to 25%. I went Ursan and quicklty finished her off. Note that 2/3 tormented creatures arrived and started attacking my monks and hereos nut I ignored them and concentrated on verish. 2/3 tormented creatures can't do much damage while I got minions and 3 melee alies arround. And with three monks arround we didn't suffer much. 1 or 2 heroes died between battle but quickly ressed and I didn't experience major health loss. Pls note that low working pain inverter may not be effective against verish and tormented creatures. I finished the mission in 5.59 mins.--220.245.178.137 09:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Strange. Since Vareshs AoE spell (forgot its name) can take out my entire party in 10 seconds. And when moving out of its effect more mobs came by. And she used that spell like 3 times in a row. And with those vortexes everywhere it was an instant death. A slightly unbalanced quest in my opinion. Especially since all the following missions is easier to gain Masters in.--Tommy Mag 23:04, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, they forgot to made it fun. Just do what you did against last boss of Factions, bring the Spoil Victor build and she should go down easy. Laziness is all abroad here. If they are reading this, make a better boss fight. Doing things a la Serious Sam isn't fun, is just boring and no innovation at all.--ShadowFog 04:34, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Pretty simple when beeing rushed. Look out for rushers, don't pay more than 2k. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.32.120.79 (talk) at 15:15, 2008 July 9 (UTC).
I also was struggling with this mission, but the one good thing sometimes forgotten is how valuable Mesmers are for single target kills/shutdowns. In this mission I used Gwen and Norgu as well as myself to spam wastrels worry. Their bar was just Wastrels Worry and then Energy Tap, leech signet, and power drain (the rest of the bar is insignificant). I chose to get energy back. The rest were support for healing and some melee and I did this in around 5 minutes by first killing the three monks upon entering, kill the boss, kill the first spawn near the gate, let them spawn again and pass on their patrol, then aggro boss and spam away. Hope this helps those having problems with this mission for Masters. WayneMesmer 14:49, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
First thanks you guys; 2nd if you find this Mission Frutrating, the Guidance above works; 1. Kill the Clerics, 2 Kill Varesh, 3 Pull Trap Hammer the Deamons, 4 Rekill Varsesh - I Got expert NM my first try after reading this Wiki; again great work, great help Thanks guys.--69.255.123.188 16:02, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Allusion to LotR?[edit]
Ruins of Moria, Ruins of Morah?
- Ruins of [former place name] is a pretty common naming system, and the two don't have anything else in common. So no, probably not. 109.145.208.77 11:08, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Another Hench Strategy[edit]
Go to the middle as in the guide. When you kill boss, go to the southwest. Kill the squishy casters that spawn (Eles and Mes) there. If you see a necro Shadow of Fear, take it out quickly as it will start generating minions. Next in priority would be Eles (AOE Water damage), then Mesmers. Then take out Paras, and lastly rangers. The rangers are a PITA as they have block from Whirling Defense. Helps a bit to have Morgahn bring Wild Throw. I ran a standard MM build on Olias but also had him take Aegis along with Signet of Lost Souls. This seemed to bring the damage levels down to where the 3 monks could handle it. I got expert on this using a para char. Have fun :) ---Donuts of Doom
Edit[edit]
Why would someone looking at this page want to look at the Dervish or Paragon page when looking at Varesh's forms? I relinked the "Dervish" to Prophet Varesh and the "Paragon" to Commander Varesh, as to be actually useful. If someone has a problem with this, please explain the logic of it before you change it back. =P Since nothing can really explain that... Bathory 10:40, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
Less Than 3 mins Masters H/H[edit]
I use Heaches: 1 Healer 1 Para 1 Derv and 1 Blood Necro. Heros: Discord Healer,Discord Curses and of course General Morgan who had nothing but the build he cam with (lol my bad) Me I am a smiting monk with r8 LB Build show in pic but to anyone would seem a mish mash and something I just threw together, believe me its not...
Used strategy as suggested, killed the clerics first them concentrated on Verish whilst ignoring the rest

Hard Mode[edit]
I tried over and over again to do this mission on hard mode. I tried all the suggestion of the other players, pulling Varesh back up the hill, trying to position myself exactly in the middle. Then suddenly I realised something; ten minutes is a long time!!
The key to completing this mission is patience. Go down the hill and kill the 3 clerics then start on prophet Varesh. As you fight her move back up to the hill flagging heroes/henchies at the top. (Heroes are better as you can stop them from running in). With any luck/skill you should drop Varesh as you are up at the top of the hill. Two torment creatures will then jump out of the chasm to the left. If you are positioned correctly they will not aggro you as you are far enough up the hill.
Get a ranger to ping them in the head with an arrow to get their attention. They will run up to you but with 8 of you against 2 of them and lightbringer title track and lightbringer gaze, you should drop them no problem.
Another wave of 2 or 3 torment creatures should start to make their way up the hill (slowly). The ranger can ping them in the head to speed them up. Again drop them at the top of the hill as you will attract commander Varesh's attention if you go too far down.
There are a number of waves of 2-3 torment creatures but each can be dropped quite easily (and quickly). When the area is safe have the ranger ping commander Varesh. She has a really large aggro range so will probably start towards your ranger without him firing a shot.
On her own she is fairly easy. A good combination of deep wound, pain inverter, lightbringer gaze, spoil victor and general life degen can drop her quite quickly.
Remember to do the mission you need to do it in less than 14 minutes, the masters bonus is less than 10. After all the messing around killing the torment creatures I still did it in around six minutes. 9:59 will still get you the masters bonus do not feel pressured just because you are against the clock. Take your time and try to isolate commander Varesh on her own. The (2 players 6 hero) party I used was: (not all the skills are shown but the main ones are)
- Warrior/Derv: Eternal aura /aura of holy might/ pain inverter/ lightbringer gaze
- Jora: Sword attacks and fragility
- Pyre: BHA interrupt
- Morgan: Blazing finale/they're on fire/ crippling + bleeding spear
- Necro/Ele: Spoil Victor/ meteor shower/ firestom/ immolate
- Vekk: Dual attunement air spiker
- Ogden: Divine spirit/ divine boon/ Glimmer of Light
- Dunkoro: (general protection e.g. Aegis, Prtective spirit etc)
Hope that helps :) --Stu 13:55, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- It helped a LOT. I was really stressing out on this, and made a bizarre skill bar with Pain Inverter, Echo, Arcane Echo, Lightbringer's Gaze, Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support, and Energy Tap among others. Echoing PI, I was able to annihilate the first Varesh in under a minute, but I kept getting overwhelmed by the mobs in her second form. After reading your post, I relaxed a little, and spent some time picking off the mobs before taking on Varesh. At the end, I got mobbed a little bit, but still pulled it off in 7:34. First try after reading your bit. Thanks :) --Sahjiarah 04:34, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Completing it with Master Reward in about 3:05[edit]
NM Guide:
Here's how I did. I went Ursan - after nerf, with Lightbringer's Gaze, Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support, Ursan Blessing and random damage skills (preferably condition skills like Deep Wound, Bleeding, Poisen etc.).
- Hero one: General Morgahn - Spear + Smithing to deal holy dmg and a couple of holy dmg signets.
- Hero two: Melonni - Balthazar's Holy Dmg Scythe with Avatar of Balthazar.
- Hero three: Gwen - Spoil Victor + MM + Inspired Hex and Inspired Enchantment + Interrupts.
- Hench one: Cynn
- Hench two: Gehraz
- Hench three: Kihm
- Hench four: Mhenlo
Walkthrough: Kill the 3 Clerics with all your skills except for Ursan. Take on Varesh, first use Assassin Support then Ursan Blessing and take her down. Go to the portal near you (The one you came from) and flag your heroes to the portal. Lure Varesh to the portal and focus only on her. When your Ursan Blessing recharges use it instantly, before that use all attack skills. She should be down in under a minute and you gain master reward.
Hope it Helped Wohlert 20:17, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
- Heh - what helped me was the 4-man Ruins of Morah build on pvxwiki. Build uses a 55, but I've done it with a 330 elementalist (see variants) and I think a perma-sin would have an easier time with the right build. I've gotten around 2:35 in NM and 2:14 in HM (I've done the run a lot, though - average is closer to 3). --Falseprophet 23:58, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Completing it with Master's Reward in HM; My time was 5:02.[edit]
I have done this on a paragon. My build was;
Angelic Magnus:
- Spear of Lightning
- "Go for the Eyes!"
- Great Dwarf Weapon
- "Save Yourselves!"
- "There's Nothing to Fear!"
- "For Great Justice!"
- Focused Anger
- Aggressive Refrain
My heroes used these builds;
General Morgahn:
- Swift Javelin
- Vicious Attack
- Stunning Strike
- Anthem of Weariness
- "Fall Back!"
- Bladeturn Refrain
- Aggressive Refrain
- Signet of Return
Hayda:
- Spear of Redemption
- Finale of Restoration
- Song of Purification
- Hexbreaker Aria
- Ballad of Restoration
- Mending Refrain
- Aggressive Refrain
- Signet of Return
Livia:
- Xinrae's Weapon
- Weapon of Shadow
- Mend Body and Soul
- Spirit Light
- Protective Was Kaolai
- Recovery
- Life
- Flesh of My Flesh
Furthermore I used the henchmen;
- Sogolon [Motivation Henchman]
- Mhenlo [Healer Henchman]
- Odurra [Domination Henchman]
- Kihm [Monk Henchman]
My strategy was quite simple. Run in and kill Varesh. The first form went down very smoothly. The second form, as you may already know, spawns alot of Margonites. I had approx. 15 Margonites on my party when I killed the second form. The trick is to keep spamming GDW on your paragons (you may or may not use it on the Motivation Henchman as well), while maintaining party-wide damage-reduction through "Save Yourselves!" and "There's Nothing to Fear!", while managing energy with "Go for the Eyes!". You can just rush in, no need to worry about deaths from all those Margonites on the second form, you have enough Ressurrects. They won't heal Varesh, so it's best to call Varesh with Ctrl+spacebar, maintain GDW on your paragons and press "T" to target Varesh again. She doesn't do any harm, as she will be knocked down for 90% of the time. Do not try and kill the aggroing Margonites, as when you kill one, another one will spawn. That is obviously a waste of time. Hope this helps!

Neutering "Enemies Must Die!"[edit]
"Save Yourselves!" makes Varesh's Enemies Must Die! a non-issue... "Save Yourselves!" is from Factions, which the player may or may not have purchased. The Nightfall curse Vocal Minority also neuters EMD, but in a different way. I set up Livia (max Curses) with VM, Spiteful Spirit, Arcane Echo and Revealed Hex on her bar; also Cacophony and Ulcerous Lungs for backup in case VM got interrupted. After pulling Varesh with the flag@hilltop method, Livia and Gen. Morgahn (Hexbreaker Aria) rendered both EMD and the wandering Spears of Torment practically harmless. -- Tekn0mancer talk 19:28, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Correct ... but "Save Yourselves!" makes most other PvE threats a non-issue too.--98.114.178.63 16:42, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
This mission...[edit]
I used to think this mission was hard...but once you get used to it, its actually quite simple, because you only need to kill 2 creatures...them being Varesh twice. A 55 setup on any character can easily tank Varesh, while a few heroes hex her and remove hexes, and Morgahn just does...whatever Morgahn does. Varesh has a huge aggro circle, so it isnt too difficult to pull her away. If you still need help, go to my page. 198.82.57.97 06:26, 26 April 2010 (UTC)I mean my page -.- Arcdash 06:27, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
Prophet Varesh[edit]
"Varesh is situated in a crater in her Prophet Varesh form, which is a scythe-wielding Necromancer level 29". Okay, what makes us think she is a Necromancer? I would rather call her a Dervish. http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/7333/gw072.jpg Barbe-Q Michael 10:23, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- And also the article about Prophet Varesh implies that she is a Dervish. Also that Dervish Tome she dropped gave me a small hint.Barbe-Q Michael 11:46, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Who needs Discordway/PvE shit?[edit]

- yea i can confirm this. it was lol- Zesbeer 03:51, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- Cool story bro
- After many tries with builds from here, I went back to Discordway: 3xNecro, Monk support, Panic Mesmer and SoS Rit + Morgan (gave him some mesmer interrupt build. No, really!).
- Me, ele/me: Echo, Pain Inverter, Lightbringer's Gaze, "Finish Him!"
- I was camping at the top all the time luring that desperate desolationwife twice. Finished HM in 5:09.
- Have fun! --Osael 00:56, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- It's not too difficult anymore with full hero teams. Henchmen were (as always) useless. But I can run just about anything, nuke Varesh, maybe kill a couple of mobs. Overall I'm done in about 2-3 minutes.-- anguard 01:08, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Solo runs nerf[edit]
when did that happen? when i go in, she casts the anti-enchantment thing and runs right past me to my bonders, every time, no matter what i do. how does her targeting system work? ПALANA 22:29, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
- And once she changes to Command (Paragon), she no longer pulls back up to your party but instead dances around at the exact range all the Torments patrol from. ...atleast 1/3 of this article will need to be rewritten now --ilr 10:06, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- I updated the artilce with a new strategy based on the changes, etc. I'm sure it could be worded better, but it beats having misleading/outdated information in the article. This strategy worked for me with an okay build, so I think it's a pretty good general strategy. 75.120.50.139 08:58, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the last edit made it harder to find information useful to people attempting the mission for the first time or who haven't tried it in a while. There are lots of strategies that work successfully in this mish and the update made it seem as if there were only 1. Also, h/h strategies differ notably from even 2-player tactics. Last time it came around in the Z-mish cycle, I went with several different groups and h/h and used more/less all the ideas at one time or another (except for trying to tackle Varesh on the side opposite the gate). Which method worked the best depended on the team.
- Accordingly, I've restored the original text and added the IP's idea verbatim. This results in an article which is harder to follow. (Many of the ideas are repeated and some are appear to be contradictory without a clear explanation of why.)
- I think the next step is to separate the explanation of what happens during the mission (Varesh + Clerics, dead Varesh, new Varesh, pops+patrols) from the suggestions...and generally useful ideas (e.g. flagging, moving away from a vortex) should be separated from those particular to a specific tactic (e.g. pulling V to the gate). We should be cautious about emphasizing an idea b/c it works for our team or removing it b/c it doesn't. Let's try to make sure we have a couple of methods that work reliably for a variety of different players/teams. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 09:34, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
This mission somehow became much easier..[edit]
Was running an SoS Rit and H/H. The moment I entered, Varesh rushed towards me at the gate, so I killed her with my spirits and then she respawned and came running up to me and I killed her again. Didn't even touch the 3 clerics, and barely touched the other spawns. Whole thing took about 3 minutes. 220.255.4.30 04:40, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
This article needs work. The fight as it goes now barely resembles the one described. Varesh ALWAYS heads right for your group in the Paragon phase and she does *significant* damage. I've been trying to hero/hench run this on my Dwayna derv spamming RoF and Victorious Sweep isnt even able to keep me up when she is in Paragon.
She also heads directly for your group in the Dervish phase, but in my experience at least, the first part is the easier of the two now. 174.24.102.215 11:22, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Waaaay easier. 2:18 min with heroes in HM. That makes me kind of sad, 'cause I remember fighting for my very life in NM just a year ago. 84.171.170.83 01:46, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
- That's because you can use 7 heroes now. A year ago, you probably completed this mission with 3 heroes and 4 henchmen. --Silver Edge 02:31, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
- I just did it with all henches (except for Morgahn of course). 3 minute win, first try, no consumables, standard turret Ranger build. This mission is easy. Arshay Duskbrow 07:56, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes this is definitely another mission where all of the discussion of tactics etc. has been rendered obsolete by the power increase 7 heroes brings. 2011 strategy for this mission: run in, kill Varesh, kill her again, collect Master's Reward. --124.168.27.166 10:39, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah this mission is such a joke now. I ran with a slightly modified 7 hero support build...and beat it in 2:48 on HM. No wonder there are no runners for this...too easy to run people through it.--Thor79•File:User Thor79 sig.png•Talk 03:10, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
(Reset indent) I don't think the 7 hero update has made as much of a difference as Varesh's behaviour. She used to stay nearly in the middle unless aggroed, now she rushes at you. In the first 'round' I was just getting ready to pull the clerics when I realised she was coming at me so I killed her instead (NM so this was easy). Then I pulled back to the gate and had just flagged heroes and positioned my spirits when she came at me again. This put her well outside the range of the clerics and meant even with a tank holding her back from the rest of the party we didn't aggro the patrolling spawns. So basically it was 8 of us vs. 1 paragon whose strongest skill (the target calling one) was useless. Varesh is no Shiro, a lot of the challenge of this mission used to come from having to deal with the patrols to avoid a massive damage spike when she called a target. If this new behaviour is consistent then that challenge is gone. 109.145.208.77 11:21, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I just tried in HM on a different character and I didn't see the exact same behaviour but she did start running to the edge of the inner section (where the vortex will be) and back as soon as the mission started and she seems to have a bigger than average aggro range, so if you're careful to get in between the patrols it's possible to pull her away from all the other enemies, especially if you have a ranged weapon for pulling. (Which I should have done but I was doing a quick test on my derv.) 109.145.208.77 11:51, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
This mission somehow became much harder..[edit]
There was no word about, but Varesh has some weird enchant removal skill or what... just tried this mission 20x times in row and always died when tanking her for my degeneration heroes... Yes - heroes has hex removal... Affirm or disagree? --Calixos 05:20, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
- When's the last time you tried this? It was easier for me across all toons the last time this came up as a Z-mish. Prophet Varesh has always carried the Monster Skill called Enchantment Collapse. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 05:31, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Enemies Must Die![edit]
The description of this skill need attention. I went to the skill page and it is described properly. And so I fixed its description in this mission page as well. Why? Because if we say: "causes nearby enemies to lock onto single targets" its like the user's enemies turn to allies XD. Yoshida Keiji talk 23:19, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
