"Help me." Those soft, simple words from dry, cracked lips and a parched throat were the first words I'd heard uttered from the ragged girl, six days into my first trip from Lion's Arch to Elona alongside the Corsairs of the southlands. (It was under the guise of learning the songs of the sea, nothing more-- I was a poor man at the time and needed the cheapest travel I could find.) She was pale as could be-- or at least, I surmised, she would have been had she not grown up under the southern sun for so long. It turned out that the girl, Aria by name-- a perfectly fortuitous name, I must say-- had been taken from her family during the time of the Searing, the Redthorns of Ascalon, and forced into labor... and worse... at the hands of those same Corsairs. Hmph. So much for the romanticized life of a pirate. I made the decision on the spur of the moment to take young Aria with me when we disembarked upon the Barbarous Shore, stealing her away only after we sank the ship and escaped in the starboard lifeboat. It was a dubious thing at best, but once we reached Gandara-- and after I produced certain... credentials... we departed once again for Istani shores. But before we could take the next boat back to Lion's Arch and futher back to Ascalon to find any trace of her scattered family, young Aria instead told me that her destiny would not yet lead her home-- not until she put an end to the Corsair menace as best she could. Thank the Five Gods for the Sunspears, then... for a place to channel that rage and to give her the skills that just might lead to her ability to achieve her goals. |
