Well said Jon. Now that we've cleared that up, I wanna make something else clear. Calor already told you guys to stop. Awesome. I guess the next time this happens I'll just start dolling out the bans. Thanks for precedent DE <3 -Auron 08:48, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Just make sure you tell them to stop first like Calor did here (quite early on) ... something that apparently didn't happen on PoA's page. --Kakarot 15:19, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- So telling people who are posting on a non-crucial user talk page to stop allows me to ban them for doing absolutely nothing wrong? Oh man I'm going to have a lot of fun with this. When can I start banning people for being stupid? As long as I let them know not to be stupid in advance, laying down bans for it afterward shouldn't be a problem, right? -Auron 15:48, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
On a side note, I think a stop message should contain a bit more than "stop" as I somehow missed it the first time. It would be nice to see a polite request, and possibly a few reasons as to why it should be stopped. I hope that's not too much to ask. — Jon Lupen 16:24, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, you have every right to demand reasoning for sysop action or requests. In fact, before bowing to such wishes, you should know the reasoning behind them. I have no intention of ceasing posting random bullshit on my talk page, since I haven't seen a single valid argument against it.
- Calor being annoyed isn't a valid reason. DE being annoyed isn't a valid reason. There are no policies that forbid talk page spam, and there is no reason that sysop discretion should come into play here - the spam is not hurting anyone or anything. My talk page wasn't long enough to be unnavigable, so its only purpose (getting in touch with me) wasn't being compromised. As people might realize when they read my post about busy and important talk pages, this page is neither busy nor important, and as I said, its purpose was in no way being compromised by a handful of users participating in a wtf chain. If I could get a single reason as to why calor/DE posted, I'd be appreciative.
- I was annoyed at the spam on PoA's talk page, but I had no right to demand everyone to stop posting. Honestly, who the fuck am I to go in and rain on their parade for no reason? I wouldn't be helping the wiki in any way, shape or form, and thus my actions would have no backing as a sysop or a user. I could have said "sup, you guys are spamming RC, can you tone it down?" but I would never have enough of an inflated ego as to threaten to ban people if they didn't stop posting.
- I'm trying to figure out when we fell down to the bottom of the slippery slope that started with Izzy's page spam reduction. Anyone care to explain how we took the logic leap from important, busy talk pages being compromised by off-topic discussion to rarely-visited talk pages being policed against the will of the user who owns it? -Auron 17:58, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Personally I was neither annoyed by this "discussion" nor by the "let's get the indentation so high that the wiki breaks!"-talk on PoA's page.. Both was for fun and fun should be always allowed - there were a lot more annoying sections on others talk pages before and I don't see a reason why someone should be banned because of this. It should be enough to clearly say that it is annoying to someone and then everybody posting should think about if it is necessary to continue "talking" and annoying that person... If talk gets too loud (like some waves on pvxwiki that were built within hours), then I can understand administrative action or warnings of course. poke | talk 18:06, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- WTF?! Have to admit I agree with poke and Auron on this one. If chat like this truly becomes disruptive then fair enough, but really I don't think this has truly effected the wiki in a detrimental manner and the ideals of fun and community should be promoted on peoples talk pages as I think it leads to a more productive community as a whole. I truly think a polite request would have worked better in this instance and that personally I feel waving the ban stick about for user endorsed, non-disruptive, non-flaming chat to be a tad disproportionate to say the least. I think a tad more perspective and use of common sense is in order. EDIT: for example the recent chess games which have been played throughout the wiki, Which I think DE has been involved in himself at times, have at times clogged recent changes with people's moves. That is in no way more meaningful to the wiki than a wtf chain, but yet has not attracted the same threats of bans and no one has even suggested such a thing. -- Salome 18:13, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) I feel obliged to point out that I never had any intention of banning anyone on this talk page. WTF chains serve absolutely no purpose, and only hinder the wiki (albeit very slightly, by clogging up RC). I believed the chain would only continue to grow, so decided to leave a simple message asking everyone participating to stop the chain before it entirely clogged RC. If I failed, which it seemed I would until DE and Backsword stepped in, I had intended to simply let it run its course. Obviously, I really wouldn't care if you were having a constructive conversation, but repeatedly saying "wtf?" is far from constructive or engaging. We had a discussion a while ago emphasizing the point that the wiki was not a site for social gathering, and there are better places to have small talk with people. Now, the only logical reason for starting a wtf chain on your own talk page, at least that I can think of, is to attract anyone who sees it to your talk page to talk with you, perhaps beginning some sort of trivial small talk discussion (read: social gathering). Admittedly, I should have left a message with more than four letters, but that's beyond the point at the moment. And Auron, since when is the talk page of one of the handful of active sysops and a former bureaucrat unimportant and insignificant, as its the best vehicle to contact you if necessary? Lastly, I had only seen the first post or two on PoA's talk. I don't have his page watchlisted, so failed to notice any extended and very useless discussion. If I had seen it, I definitely would have left a message asking them to stop and explaining why I believed they should. calor (talk) 18:30, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- I would like to point out as well that I don't have any issues with Calor asking people to stop doing things he finds disruptive or annoying, As I understand that and have done so myself on previous occasions. I do however think that DE's response in this instance was somewhat heavy handed. -- Salome 18:35, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) You have to remember that people watch talk pages for actual discussion, and having watchlist pings for chains of "wtf" is different to getting pings for chess games. You watch a chess game to watch a chess game, and you watch a talk page for meaningful talk. RC spam is a factor, yes, (and of course you have to take into account what's causing the rc spam) but it's not the only factor. Talk pages have a different function to chess games. (When the whole chess thing started, I did have an issue with it, but so far I haven't noticed it being too problematic. That's another story though.)
- I agree that if you're asking people to stop, you should give reasons. However, I don't think that asking people to stop when spam chains become disruptive is a bad thing - if something starts being disruptive, you try and stop that disruption. If asking the users doesn't help - i.e. if people continue being disruptive in spite of that message - then short blocks (like two hours) might not be out of order. Of course, that's taking into account watchlist spam, rc spam, page spam, and how that disrupts the talk page. This section was getting annoying, yes, but it wasn't in the blocking phase. -- Brains12 \ talk 18:38, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- In our defence, it's not like it was an edit a minute. the edits that where taking place were somewhat few and far-ish between. — Jon Lupen 18:42, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Imo if the user who's page it is on asks for it to stop, it should stop. If it becomes a disruption (RC spam etc), it should stop. I don't necessarily see either of those things happening here. -- Wyn 18:54, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

- The wiki is first and foremost a place to document Guild Wars. That means work. It's a place for work, and I think that some fun is productive. But if it gets in the way of something, fun should take a backseat. Someone asked (not directly) me to stop the chain on my page, so I have. Well, Calor, if you (or anyone asked me) I would have stopped it sooner. Though we are not "owners" of a talk page, I suppose we're ambassadors of our page. I think a more pronounced reason is needed though. --Antioch 22:36, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

- I hit 999 about twice a month when I play. I have to make sure I document what I talk about - when I say that every single fucking team I just faced getting to halls was palm strike sins with smite heroes, I am able to back it up with pictures.
- I'm playing fun games like l4d now though, so I've been in the 600s for weeks. Just broke 700 this run. -Auron 10:37, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

- Me three! I'm still catching up on my FPS ability (last one I played seriously was Goldeneye 007). I'm actually rather bad at expert mode since it requires being excellent at reflexes/trigger mashing, but I'm okay at versus since most infected attacks aren't based on reflex. -Auron 02:25, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- Oh and l4d is the best game I've played in a very long time, and the game isn't even complete yet. Valve is going to add more campaigns to the PvE mode and make the other 2 currently-available ones PvPable. They're also planning to fix some of the grosser balance issues (closets make versus mode kind of stale) and fix outright bugs (like being able to bypass certain checkpoints without attracting hordes). -Auron 02:37, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- I keep shotgunning my own teammates when I see more than 5 infected run towards me, so I don't dare to play it online to avoid rage. Pika Fan 12:11, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- You learn to use melee attacks early and often when playing online. It knocks off hunters and smoker tongues, bounces boomers back, and stuns the normal infected, and if you hit a teammate with it you do no damage to them. It's a win-win situation. It's basically palm strike for l4d.
- But yeah, even some experienced players get team fire sometimes. It's pretty common when you're trying to nail infected at range and they walk in front of you thinking the team is moving on. Most people don't lose their heads, but if you auto shotgun a teammate twice in the face they might get perturbed. -Auron 12:31, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Which was more annoying[edit]
The smite or tease heroes?Pika Fan 15:56, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Gwen, IMO. Raine - talk 16:51, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- It's Gwen Gwen Norgu Norgu tbh.Pika Fan 02:16, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- Eh, they're both generally annoying, but to different people. As a midline caster, I'm more irritated by the smites, since WoWarding/Shadow doesn't do anything to my spells, while smites can remove hexes and condis I put on (not to mention getting a RoD right before rodgorts lands is *really* annoying, as it made 25 energy do basically nothing).
- When I'm playing warrior, they're both equally annoying IMO. Having deep wound removed the second you apply it is as annoying as having fastcast weapons thrown on a bunch of targets :/ -Auron 02:22, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- I find the interrupts debilitating, it sucks when I have to cancel cast 4-5 times just to force them to use up all their interrupts just to get 1-2 spells off before I have to cancel cast again.Pika Fan 08:59, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

ANet does balance things[edit]
SS/LB weekend and it won't extend favor, lul. Learning from mistakes too late is srs bsns. Vili 01:18, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- Good userpage post, Auron. I feel that Flail should be slightly changed though, just only have it work with melee weapons. The BA Turret Ranger is really really dumb and unless if ArenaNet decides to weaken Ranger damage output to the point that Flail doesn't matter (not likely, they might slowly lower it though), it should probably be changed so it is out of their hands. DarkNecrid 16:20, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- The problem with the ba turret ranger is ba, sloth hunters, and hunters. Rangers have used lightning reflexes and such for ages, and while flail ending quickly is really just a boon for use on rangers (since they don't have to bring a cancel stance), it really isn't the problem with the build. Even with RtW and a 15^50 bow, autoattacking really isn't that impressive. The damage comes from the damage skills. -Auron 01:06, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Epic[edit]
Balance essay. Now, if only anent would both read it and give a damn. Lord Belar 21:15, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
I read it, and you pretty much just told arena net that you want to make a spiking class into a waddling pile of useless. though ANet always misses the point of balance.--66.192.104.13 22:04, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- Oh you can't play sin unless it's a 5 attack skill horror? Oh okay.
- Here's a hint - they can still be useful without a billion attack skills. Just because that's the only way you've been able to win with them doesn't mean that's the only build they should ever have. Ttgr ran two builds showcasing amazing assassin utility, and both of them required a semblance of skill.
- It's hard for ANet to balance the class when 90% of the people who play it are retarded fanbois who are like OMG IF I CANT INSTAGIB SOMEONE IN 2 SECONDS THE CLASS IS USELESSSSSSSSS. They are terrible at the game and useless in terms of balance advice - all they want to do is continue playing a mindless build to win without putting any effort into it. Basically, they are the last people in the world ANet should be listening to when it comes to balance. Unfortunately, since ANet's CR team has never known where to look, those are the kind of people ANet has been listening to. And it shows. They never stop making terrible 1-2-3-4-5-6 gimmicks because they don't understand what the class should be. -Auron 23:24, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- Here's a way to enact balances on sins without the "OMG IF I CANT INSTAGIB SOMEONE IN 2 SECONDS THE CLASS IS USELESSSSSSSSS" nonsense: rename the class to Agent. The implication behind "Assassin" is someone who kills someone else by profession (not necessarily sneakily), thus forcing the theme of 1-2-3 instagib. "Agent" doesn't have the "must kill" implication, but does imply sneaky infiltration AND general sabotage, which could kill someone, meaning that one could balance the class without 1-2-3 instagib.

you forgot to mention teaseheroes and roj monk smiters, as well as the general imbaness of pdrain/drainenchant on heroes. 99.236.13.140 20:07, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- Those are another issue entirely. If I wrote up everything wrong with Guild Wars' balance, it would be a treatise of epic proportion, because ANet's balance has been exceptionally poor these last two years :/

- No. He makes a lot of sense. Palm Strike is balanced because of condition removals. Smiteway is balanced because you got WoH to redbar people back to full. Hexway is balanced because of PnH. Eleball is balanced because you can preprot and infuse, and their damage is reduced by shield sets, which everyone runs.Pika Fan 10:26, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- Eleball needs a buff actually because Pika Fan is so good at infusing. It's unbalanced. Misery 10:27, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

- You still need to unblock 4726, if that is your intent.
- Either way, I find his actions extremely hypocritical. He's pissed off to the point of wanting to take a wikibreak for someone reverting his block, except when felix did it to me, he was all on Felix's side. He can be a carebear and spout his dignity bullshit all he wants, but he's more biased than half the wiki put together.
- It's unfortunate that he pulls out all the stops on fallacious logic, going all the way to destroying the exception with "Is this the style of discussion you want to condone on this wiki?." A "logical" answer to his "logical" question would be, "Do you want to allow 'herp de derp palm strike is balanced' all over the wiki? Please reconsider." He just doesn't think it all the way through. Although, with righteous anger, they usually don't... -Auron 12:22, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, thank you for the reminder. I usually leave autoblock off, so I'd forgotten to check.
- It's funny because the both of you accuse the other of failing at logic, with "gaping holes" and "complete turnarounds", but have never actually gone over such things to defend yourselves... ;)
- Anyway, while I don't believe it falls specifically under the role of a sysop to "raise the bar" by giving notice to those that fail at
game balancelogical arguments (i.e. anyone/everyone ought to do that), I think it was a stretch of an NPA assertion, and that was my rationale to counter...and then he blows up. :\ I was aware that he was in a bad mood, but "don't post to wiki in anger", etc. Ah well, this was a long time in coming. - One can prove - factually, almost indisputably - that Pimpslap is imbalanced, and so I don't get why people argue against that. It is like people who argue Glimmer is superior to WoH. You can mathematically show them they are dead wrong. :\
- Just so I'm not 90/10'ing, was wondering if you think I might have been overhasty with the demotion, as it will most certainly look like a knee-jerk reaction to any observers. Vili 12:59, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- I wasn't expecting it. I'm ignorant of your reasoning - I haven't talked to you for quite some time, so I'm not privy to any potential drama leading up to the current situation. Knowing the history is often important in cases like this. Mostly because of my ignorance, I don't have an answer for you.
- It will look like a knee-jerk reaction to some. No matter how slow you move and how many chances you give (especially if you give them in private), someone will always assume that the straw that broke the camel's back was the only straw on his back. But maybe they're right? I dunno the whole story here. -Auron 13:57, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- tl;dr story is: "Overruling me this way means I hand in my badge and take a long wikibreak if you ever do this again." (Threatening me is never a smart idea.) I knew that such a repeat occurrence in the future would be nigh inevitable, as we've clashed over blocks or potential blocks repeatedly. You may also recall the discussion we had after I made the promotion in the first place... you've expressed time and again how mountains are made out of molehills, and I suppose this was enough to tip me over the edge and admit that you are right. He's just not worth the trouble, ultimately. (Which is a hard pill to swallow, since he's "fixed" a lot of stuff which no one else can/has the time for...) 'Twould become a question of how much time I want to spend personally monitoring an admin, and living my life. :\
- Regardless, you are correct that we ought to talk sometime. Vili 14:11, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Done. Vili 11:13, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
