.jpg vs. .png[edit]

Hey Magamdy, just wondering if you had intended to upload .png's for File:Ghost Champion.png, File:Ascalonian ghost m.png, and File:Beast Swarm of Bees.png. G R E E N E R 22:23, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Yup. PNGs allow for an alpha channel/transparency. The ghosts are transparent ingame and I found making then a PNG gives them a more "natural" look than giving it a "hard" white background in a JPG. With the bees, I figured it would feature so much white, I might as well make it a PNG. Downisde is the filesize of course. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 22:54, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Rendering[edit]

3DSmax ?--Ruine User Ruine Eternelle Ruine Eternelle.jpg Eternelle 18:56, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Jup, and 3D Ripper DX Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 19:40, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Funny fact, I'm working with 3DSmax, but only use it to create 3D objects. I honestly never thought it could be used that way.--93.25.214.156 22:54, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
It can. See it more as reverse engineering. You have the model, the wrapping and the textures, now only to figure out how the game fits it all together. Reproducing that in MAX needs some trickery. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 10:24, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
Ok I get it, you are using 3D Ripper DX to snag the 3D mesh and the problem is the program grabs EVERYTHING. That is why you need the 2D planes removed and been going off at Joe about it. Well Joe hasn't been on the wiki since August. He must have taken my advice and left on vacation? But I wouldn't hold my breathe on Joe and his team making you a button. Oh well, there is a man in my guild -I will hook you up with- who also uses the 3D Ripper DX on several of his games. He doesn't use 3DS Max, he is using Blender 3D. I don't know if that makes a difference to you or not? Maybe he has the answers you are seeking. --Wendy Black 22:03, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
More information on this subject, I spoke to him and he said, he hasn't worked on it since Blender was completely remodeled years ago. I wrote this part down so I could get it word for word;
He said,"I worked with Blender 2.49b and used a lot of Python scripts. When they moved Blender into 2.5x and above, they (explicitive) it up! None of the scripts worked anymore. So I began to drop out of game modding and left the Blender community. I did a lot of GTA modding and it is sad that Roman Lut didn't continue his work on the 3D Ripper DX." He also told me to wish you luck and that you can find older versions of the Blender from the repository. Good luck! --Wendy Black 09:10, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
No, I just need to have the 2D planes removed because it looks better ingame, during playing :/. When I'm rendering I'm just rendering a single object that I'm right in front of with my character. It rips everything seperately so I can just delete everything I don't need. Also I didn't start the thread, I saw God of Fissures start it, and it's something I thought about like a day ag, so I joined in. Thanks for taking the time for helping me though :). Although I don't need it, as a non-graphic design person I'm very happy I ws able to learn enough about 3Ds Max and GW to make these renders. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 11:08, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
I only wish I could have been more help to you. I don't mess with advanced 3D programs like Ripper and Blender. That stuff would drive me crazy, I am crazy enough as it is now. I just fiddle with the 2D artwork, but you are doing a great job on your 3D Renders. I prefer to work in the GIMP and have a small DA page. Stop by anytime, the door is always open. --Wendy Black 14:28, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks ^^. I see you like having cut-outs of your characters. If you want one rendered we can meet up in-game and, so I can render it. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 14:48, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the offer, but it was a lot of work getting them in poses, also I had to ask my son to work my account while I took the actual photos from his account. The format of my characters standing in front of their status display is from another video game my sons played. This was my inspiration for making them like that. I see you have a few rare animal renders. There is a cat in Kaineng Center, it is the only one I have seen in the whole game. But my son told me, he thinks it might also appear in the Zaishen Menagerie. --Wendy Black 21:24, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Ah yes, I do those for fun occasionaly ;) Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 15:10, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Categorizing[edit]

Love the model render "magic" your doing! ^_^ Should images like File:Luxon magistrate.jpg be re-categorized as Category:ArenaNet renders? And not ingame Category:Screenshots? --Falconeye (talk) 23:43, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks :). Yes absolutely, those renders are in no way a screenshot. I believe Category:ArenaNet NPC renders is appropriate? Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 00:24, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
It should be, since its the only appropriate option. --Falconeye (talk) 19:43, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Request[edit]

If its not too much trouble, try categorizing by "an existing association"; preferably the smaller ones (see example). It should be a welcomed alternative to navigating ArenaNet NPC renders. Don't worry bout the already uploaded ones; I'll eventually get to them during one of my infamous insomniac edit binges. ^_^ --Falconeye (talk) 05:16, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

It seemed like a nice compromis, I render, others tag ;). But yeah, will do. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 15:44, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Could you create a category for item renders. if that doesn't already exist? Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 16:35, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Like this Category:ArenaNet item renders and this Category:Item renders? --Falconeye (talk) 11:55, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Right...that one. :p Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 15:50, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

More requests[edit]

If you run into any duplicate item renders, please tag them with this: Category:Items with shared icons. --Falconeye (talk) 06:54, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Will do. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 16:24, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Glint Render[edit]

Hey Magamdy, Falconeye has decided to spruce up the Glint article a bit, and has found a few images that could be included, but what are the chances of us getting a render of Glint? She's got at least two different versions, lying down and and in combat. G R E E N E R 00:58, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Sure. One maiden from the village should suffice as payment. Actually I've been thinking about doing her. It's just a pain getting to her. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 10:56, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
I'll see what I can drum up. Quality not guaranteed. G R E E N E R 19:51, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
It's shots like File:Glint side.jpg which amaze me the most. The artists build such a beautiful model, yet we as players don't always get the chance to appreciate what was made due to having to fight it! Thanks for grabbing that vantage point. G R E E N E R 17:00, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Jup! That's one of the reasons why I enojy rendering so much, it allows me to show these models in high resolution to everyone, uncovering details normally unnoticed. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 18:16, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Item Generic Renders[edit]

Hey there, I just noticed your edits from September 16th, 2015 (and a few later ones) regarding Item Generic/2/3.jpg and a few sites that use those three renders. That doesn't make sense to me - why have a lockpick use a bag render, for example? Do you have any plans there? Since it's been quite some time now ... . Cheers, Steve1 (talk) 12:26, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Well, that's the model they use when dropped. So why not upload them. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 15:48, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

The Tools of War[edit]

Are the The Tools of War foes not level 26 in hard mode? --Silver Edge 07:37, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

No, they're lvl 20. The rest of the Kournans in the map are normally "upleveled", but those stay level 20. Pretty weird. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 10:43, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

Renders[edit]

Nice job bringing the render project back to life! Haha MadMaxx (talk) 21:50, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks ;). Figured I might as well try and finish what I started. Say MadMaxx, while you are here. You didn't use 3D Ripper DX right. Or did you? Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 21:55, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
I did indeed. I always cheat a little on the capture though using memory manipulation and some tricks to force the engine to load any (npc) model I want where ever I want. Hence how I got the one on my user page. MadMaxx (talk) 22:11, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
Care to share that with me? Would make my life a lot easier with some hard-to-get-to-models. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 22:13, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
Well... I don't even know where to start. I've spent a crazy amount of time reverse engineering this game, which sometimes can be fun haha. ;) Which models are the hard-to-get? MadMaxx (talk) 23:28, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
Anything on the Special event list, all models that appear only as moving enemies (ie. Renegade). I usually force the GW client into displaying the default animation of a model (by minimizing and maximizing the client). But that rarely works with enemies, and is impossible if they're walking around. Do oyu use cheat engine for your stuff? Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 09:42, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Also how did you make those screenshots with the icy river n stuff? Did you make your own GW builder or something :O Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 09:44, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Something like that, yes. Also yes to cheat engine. I think it's the easiest way to manipulate memory/functions on-the-fly. As for the screenshots, those are maps that they put a lot of time into and then scrapped. Sadly they were never utilized, which is too bad. They could of been fun to work into Beyond. I haven't used ripper in a long time so I doubt I'll get around to doing any new renders these days, but I can try to help you any way I can. My goal on GW was always to reverse engineer it and discover how it worked. The renders just kind of branched as an extension of that. The topic of loading models is a long and complex one that I'm not exactly sure how to approach yet. MadMaxx (talk) 18:05, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Reverse engineering is a lot of fun :). I did it too on my journey to teach myself the rendering process (I have zero 3D experience/skills.), for example how the game applies shine textures to armors etc. What you're talking about seems like a totally different cup of tea, but I'm willing to learn. Is there any way you can teach me to specifically how to do the model loading? Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 18:27, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I'm sure I could come up with an easy enough way. Join the wiki IRC sometime. MadMaxx (talk) 20:37, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

What wiki IRC? I'm not aware it exists, nor can I find it. -- Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 21:46, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
#gww on GameSurge MadMaxx (talk) 21:59, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Aha, I see. Well I've signed up, guess we'll have to make an appointment then ;) Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 22:05, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
I'll be around for a couple hours today and randomly idle so whenever is good. You have a Magrid tonic? MadMaxx (talk) 22:33, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Where do you live (i.e., whats today for you) It's GMT + 2 here. Also, no I don't have a Margrid tonic, although I think I see what you wanna do here. You want to use the model change using tonics to find the value that changes, right? Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 04:22, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
GMT - 4 and close to that, yes. There's a reason the tonic is required so it's nice to have one that's easy to find. MadMaxx (talk) 10:42, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
Ah ok. I just came back from a 3 hour exam so I'll just play the game for a bit ;). But I'll check if you're on later today, and I'll see if I can get some of dat margrid. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 11:22, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
So Renegade and the only special missing storm actor are easy. Is there any other specific ones you have at the moment? MadMaxx (talk) 20:24, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Not specific ones. Can you morph into any model, including non humans? Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 20:37, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

Other black parts ?[edit]

You managed to get the black part near the shining blade encampement in The Wilds, so I wanted to ask of you if you (by any chance) had more of these old but currently non-explorable areas, especially around the old PvP outposts (the crag, fort koga, amnoon oasis, d'alessio arena) ? Thanks in advance :) --Ruine User Ruine Eternelle Ruine Eternelle.jpg Eternelle 10:44, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

No sorry, I've not nearly been around for that long :P. I started playing after EotN was just released I think. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 11:25, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Half Moon[edit]

Hi Magamdy,

don't the two unique Droknar's Bows look like the Half Moon skin in another colour? http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?title=Half_Moon&diff=2603921&oldid=2598492

Cheers, Steve1 (talk) 22:30, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Hey. In my opinion it's not. Other unique items are just a dye variant of the standard, but the Droknar bows have an entirely differnet, unique color that happens to take the Half Moon as a basis. I guess we can put it back with a note like: "Droknars bow uses the same design, but colored uniquely." Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 22:35, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
I concur that it's not dyed differently (assuming the Dye chart is correct). I don't own either bow - but from your scans I thought the skin is identical, just with a entirely different colour. But since you seem to own both bows I thought I just ask you. I'm cool either way. :) Steve1 (talk) 22:40, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
I don't own both bows. I usually go through all "same skin" weapons to check for which one I can upload a render too. But I found these to be simply not eligible for the "same skin" label. From a technical viewpoint "skin is identical, just with a entirely different colour" is impossible because skin=texture, and a different color is a different texture. But Ill put them back with a note. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 22:53, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Questions about 3D renders[edit]

I have recently started learning "Make Human" and "Blender 3D". I attempted to use "3D Ripper DX" in another game but can't seem to figure it out. Either errors occur with just a number and nothing else or the program crashes. I am using this on my new laptop, HP Intel Celeron N3050 Processor, 4GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive and Windows 10. I don't want to mess with Guild Wars until I am 100% certain of what I am doing. Is this program incompatible to the new OS? The games I tried all use DX and all are 3D; Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege, and Dungeon Keeper 2. As you can tell the titles are some older games. Any help is appreciated Thanks! --Wendy Black 07:19, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Hmm, can you be more specific with what the problem is? Because it works fine for my on Windows 10. What do you mean with "just a number"? -- Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 16:02, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Gw2[edit]

Nice to see that you're back again. Have you ever considered doing renders for Gw2? :) MadMaxx (talk) 22:24, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

Hey, yeah I'm getting back to it whenever I have time! Actually i have tried my hand and Gw2, 3D Ripper DX DOES work. However, Guild Wars 2 makes use of more advanced rendering techniques, so I couldn't accurately portray the models right away. Seeing how long it took me to "reverse-engineer" Gw1, I decided to stick to it. Besides I never got far into Gw2. Btw, I should finish that Factions list of yours! Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 16:00, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Ah that's too bad. Compiling a list of models in Gw2 is so much easier thanks to content and look up info being in the dat. Making that factions list took forever haha. MadMaxx (talk) 17:45, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Icertainly wanna get into GW2 when i get a new GPU. Then I'll give it a new go for sure. But I would love to complete Gw1 first, as far as possible. Do you think you'll be able to look up weapon adresses? That would make it possible to render those rare Asian pre order weapons. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 18:28, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Just looked at the bonus items again to try and refresh my memory its been so long. I know I remember seeing the Japan/Taiwan ones. Most of them were added to the game around October 2005. I don't remember ever seeing the "coke" ones though, but I would imagine they were added around that same time period. (it looks like only 3 of them -- Bonecrusher, Heaven's Arch, Storm Ember -- are actually unique/non GotY) Which ones are you interested in? MadMaxx (talk) 21:09, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Ideally all of them. Except the common "1 million" upgrade items. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 21:28, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Added some to the bottom of the list. MadMaxx (talk) 21:58, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Whoop, that was fast! Do you by chance have the adress to a weapon I can morph? I tried using the Rift Warden but transforming into the weapon itself isn't ideal lol. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 22:38, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Uhh well what do you have that you can use? FDS is 14392 if you have one of those laying around. MadMaxx (talk) 23:12, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Hmm, I'm sure I can get one somewhere. Cheers once again! Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 04:40, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Renders in 3DS Max 2016+[edit]

Hello, I just came across your userpage and saw you are busy doing renders for GW. Do you use 3DRipper, and if so, what modelling program do you use? I currently dabbled a bit with some renders of my own characters (as you can see on my userpage), but I have to do an obnoxious process of snapping to .obj as the .3dr format is not supported beyond 3DS Max 2011. You know an up-to-date importer for that for later version? Would be interesting to know what method you are using. Just for reference, I'm a long-time GW player, and use 3DS Max for level design, but I was really surprised to see you can actually extract 3D Models from just GW. --Jorre22225 (talk) 22:37, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

Hey! Yep, I am using 3D Ripper DX. As far as I know it does not support anything beyond Max 2011, as you say, which is why I use 2011. The tool has been abandoned by it's creator, which is a shame, because now we're stuck using old software and old games. What do you mean with what method I'm using? You should know that, if you're an actual modelling artist, you are leagues beyond me in knowledge about 3D artistry. I only taught myself to do this rendering process and nothing more (although I did learn me a few basics of 3D rendering). Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 16:02, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

Abaddon's appearance[edit]

I always thought of Abaddon as a huge dude shrouded in darkness all chained up, so we could only see his head and hands. I never thought of him as a floating head and disembodied hands when I was playing. The area around him is context, which is vital for illustrating the character. I feel the same way about Glint, whose model is blue but who is brown in-game because of all the sand. Yet she's always thought of as blue because that's how she's depicted on the official wiki (and I think that's influenced the design for her appearance in GW2 cinematics, Aurene, etc..). --Santax (talk · contribs) 17:38, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Yes, I understand your sentiment, but I find your timing of acting on it a bit strange. This discussion of what is better, a screenshot of an NPC "in context" of the environment or a more "objective" render of the model - unaffected by lightning etc - has already been conducted when the Render Project first started. That discussion ended in preferring renders. If you would like to argue the opposite, you're kind of late to the party because the project is dead except for me :/. To illustrate, Emily Diehl's render is from 2008, which was ONLY the head, not even the arms, so yeah... Don't shoot the messenger.
Also there's the fact that this particular render took like 2 hours to get right (and even then I missed an effect) so I don't necessarily take kindly to you just removing it lol... Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 14:34, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
I think renders are generally fine, I just feel like in this particular case the character of Abaddon isn't accurately represented by a render. Most of the time, context lighting, environment etc. do matter to how the character is represented (e.g. depicting a dwarf standing in the snow), but not that much - and if we have NPC's with shared models, we end up with a screenshot of each different NPC in a different context and it's very unwieldy, which is how things were before. Don't get me wrong, I think things are better now that we use renders - I just also think that there's a big difference between Abaddon being depicted as a huge guy looming in the darkness, and as a disembodied head and Rayman-style hands. If Abaddon's in-game appearance isn't the main image on the article, I think it at least warrants inclusion in the infobox. --Santax (talk · contribs) 14:43, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
It depends on what you are looking for in representation. A screenshot shows the context, which is one good thing. But a large render reveals details of the model that go unnoticed in-game due to resolution, lightning, movement etc. I would prefer the latter, although I admit the Abaddon case is quite extreme, so yes, the screenshot would do fine in the infobox. But the fact remains that Abaddon model is just an evil Rayman. Whether your mind processes it into more or fantasizes about the rest - which it should, probably that's what Anet intended to convey - is not really something that can be documented on the wiki, because the wiki is as factual as possible. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 15:38, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
I guess it's a difference in perspective about what the images on NPC pages are there for - whether they're there to document NPC models in as much detail as possible, or whether they are there to document the NPC's appearance in a context much more directly linked to the game. Anyways, I'll add the screenshot into the infobox being as you're in agreement. --Santax (talk · contribs) 12:56, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

References[edit]

Using Mursaat as an example:

  • Use <ref>[URL name for url], Name of source</ref> inline behind the information you're supporting.
  • Create a subsection at the bottom of the article titled ==References== with <references/> in the line below.
  • E.g. <ref>[https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User:Greener Greener's page], Greener</ref>

Hope that works out! G R E E N E R 16:19, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

It sure does! Thanks, Greener :) Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 23:29, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

You were the only person I could think of maybe finding it.[edit]

Spider's Gluttony needs an image but idk anyone with taiwan preorder. Can you think of a way to find it in the gw.dat? It's item id is probably close to the other preorder shields with the same stats I would guess, but really its just a guess. I figured you might know since you poke around in there doing the renders (I think thats how anyway lol) Durp da durp (talk) 02:23, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Try User:MadMaxx, I cannot look into the dat, also I don't have my render tools anymore :(. Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 17:50, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
