Hello From Wikia

Hi Emily, I work at Wikia and would love to talk to who-ever is the appropriate person at Arena Net about ways to work together to promote this wiki. Can you let me know if you are the right person? Feel free to message me back on my Wikia talk page or send me an email at angie at wikia.com --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:68.122.1.246 .

Oh hey Angies, it's Lugiatm from Uncyclopedia. Sorry to hijack your talk page, Emily, but I just thought I should let you know that it's Gaile Gray that is ArenaNet's community relations manager, however Emily does a LOT of helping out at the Wiki so it should be fine to talk to eiher of them. --Santax (talk · contribs) 07:10, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Emily is Design Liaison for ANet - every bit as wonderful as Gaile, just with a different field of expertise ;) --SnogratUser Snograt signature.png 16:24, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Hello Angie! I think that your best bet for this would be to email community@arena.net. This way, it would get to Gaile and the community team, and they can pass it along the proper channels from there. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 17:27, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
I don't surf the web for all things wiki-like, but very nice portal for finding different wikis. Now, if you'll excuse me, I didn't know there was a Final Fantasy wiki. Got to check that out :D — Gares 18:03, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

GWW:RfTA

Hey Emily, I know this might sound a bit repetitive, but are there any updates on the "to be installed" requests? (GWW:TECH)? The latest updates on them were 3 weeks ago. I can understand that the IT department is busy, but DPL is on "to be installed" for over two months now. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 22:13, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I sent an email out again this morning asking the status. I know that the IT team is extremely busy, so the best that I can do is to send out weekly emails about the requests. Don't worry :) I'm on top of it. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:17, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick response Emily. I do hope IT will sacrifice a lunchtime to install them. :) -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 22:22, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Looks like the dismiss notice, thing has been installed. --Sktbrd341 22:45, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
You're right! 1 down, 2 to go. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 22:58, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I just got a reply that they are all installed. I will update that page accordingly. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:01, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your chasing efforts Emily! I've made a little headstart with DPL and it seems to work perfectly! Give the guys/gals from IT a cookie from me! :) -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 01:10, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
That's really cool, Corrran! And yes, I'll pass the sentiments along for you. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

{{Latest update}}

Just FYI: we changed the way the Main Page looks by adding a 'latest game update'-link, but this. Anja did it for you this time, but just so you know how to do that yourself: go to {{Latest update}} and fill in the date of the last update. I also believe you have sysop-rights so you should be able to change the template. (Since it is on the main page, it has to be protected to avoid defacing.) -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 00:57, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the reminder. I knew about the template, but when I went to change the date it had already been adjusted for me. You guys are fast ;) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:01, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Anja is faster than a speeding bullet. I'm trying to get the template to auto-update, but I might need StringFunctions for it. See here for an example of how it would work. It's a combination of StringFunctions and DPL. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 01:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and I added this section to your page, since I wasn't entirely sure if you had been notified of it already. I know you are very actively involved in a lot of things, but you also mentioned that GW-work is currently keeping you a bit from the wiki. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 01:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
If you put in a community-approved request on the RTA page for the functions, I'll pass it along to IT. I do check that page even when I'm busy, since my watched pages send me email, so it would get relayed to them. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:23, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Spontaneous Combustion

Now you probably know this skill, but the problem is, this wiki is not able to obtain the proper skill icon for Spontaneous Combustion ever. (Unless Gwen becomes lured by the dark side in GW:EN and starts using it again.) Would it be possible for you to have a look if you could find this skill's icon somewhere? Unless it is similar to Image:Monster skill.jpg. I'm a bit afraid that if I post this on Izzy's page he won't notice it due to the heavy comment traffic there. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 01:01, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Sure, let me dig around and see if I can find that icon for you guys. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:11, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
OK Cor...I checked this out for you and found that the skill is set to use our generic monster skill icon, so there was never art made for that specific skill (probably because it was such a specialized thing). I checked the icon category, and didn't see this generic icon on the list, so I've uploaded the icon for you guys here Image:Monster skill.jpg. If you already have it and I'm blind, feel free to delete it :) Oh, and by the way...those new skill pages with the DPL tables look AWESOME!!!! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:20, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Wow, I must be blind AND psychic. I didn't see the icon in the list but managed to pick the same name you guys had for it already. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:21, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Sounds like a ritualist to me. ;) Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 01:24, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm overdue on vacation too, that's why I'm off tomorrow. Perhaps a good idea for you too? Or are all vacations canceled until GW:EN is released?
Thank you for checking on Spontaneous Combustion, I think I already thought it would be the Image:Monster skill.jpg-image, but one can always hope for some more neat skill icon art. :)
As for the DPL pages, I'm quite pleased with them myself, but don't give me all the credits though: there was a lot of input from others, especially regarding the formatting, which in the end makes it look so neat.
And I would also like to nudge you in this direction if I may, perhaps you want to add anything to that discussion? (This isn't related to any skill icon.) -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 01:29, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Alrighty! I gave my input over there for you. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:46, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Small request

Hi Emily, just a little request :) We have created a category for the rendered images to go in [[Category:NPC renders]], It would be a great help if you could put that in the description along with {{arenanet image}} that you already put in. If it's too much bother it's not the end of the world but thought I would ask :) --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 15:12, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Nope, that's not a problem at all! I can start doing this from here on out. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:09, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Wiki Question

Emily

First glad to meet you and I have been admiring your page but had some questions for you. I have a busy page and very much like the tab function that you have on your page so I am looking to copy the code but must also admit to not being the most skilled at this. My last programming class of any description was over 4 years ago so I am very rusty.

Blushing ask if you have a tutorial for this that I can access and start learning again? I if not I am open to getting a book if you have one you can recommend.

Thanks for your time Rockweaver 18:18, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

For a simple tab based navigation, simply put in links at the top to the pages, so you can navigate from one to another page. The rest is design, so you can put each link into a div which are aligned horizontal. And on active pages you can (as Emily did) change the color of the active link for example. If you need help, feel free to ask me and I will help you. (btw. you can also look through other user pages as a lot people use tabbed navigations) poke | talk 18:23, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi Rockweaver! I find that the best way to learn wiki code is to look at pages and see how they are built. Wikipedia also has a wealth of knowledge about formatting and templates, but you may learn better by talking to some of the advanced editors (like poke or other helpers). I'm also willing to answer questions, but I am afraid that GW:EN is keeping me so busy that I won't be able to spend the same amount of time here as I usually would, so the other helpers may be a better avenue for you now :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:12, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Bad at Math?

Yes, I've been trying to create an account but cant get past the puzzle. Guess I wont be using the site anytime soon. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:98.194.220.105 .

The Windows calculator might work. -- Gordon Ecker 02:54, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Hello there! If this persists and you still cannot create an account despite answering the math problem correctly, please let me know either on my talk page here or on the reporting wiki bugs page. It's possible that it could be an issue with the module we use to run account authentication, but I haven't received any other complaints so I'm not sure. In the meantime, I'll do some research! Thanks for pointing this out :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:25, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Captcha problems

Emily, could you have a look here please? Thank you. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 16:01, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I'm passing this along right now. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:01, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Yay!

Hey Emily, just wanted to say that I absolutely love what you do on the wiki. I think you had the update info up before it even went live. :o Way to go, love you Em!(It is okay to call you Em, right?) -UserDrago-sig.gif Drago 06:03, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Aww, thanks :) I compile the notes, so it's super easy for me to just plop them here a little before I send them off for publishing. I wub joo guys that much! We're partying and celebrating in the studio right now, excitedly waiting for launch ourselves (with our own characters sitting there ready to roll). I'm between my desk , the food, and nearby Guitar Hero trying to pass the time! (And sure, no worries about abbreviating my name. People do it all the time!) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 06:40, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Wiki server problem?

Please see Talk:Main Page#Wiki 'lag_spikes' and forward the problem to your IT team. Thank you. :) -- Gem (gem / talk) 07:42, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Gem. I've passed this along this morning and they are looking into it. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 16:49, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
I noticed your message on the main talk page already. Thank you! -- Gem (gem / talk) 16:56, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

The lagging is getting ridicilous. Any updates on this? I'm too frustrated to even try contributing. -- Gem (gem / talk) 15:08, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

I think it's the fact that templates like this keep getting mercilessly edited, and all the pages being simultaneously updated is killing the wiki :P --Santax (talk · contribs) 19:34, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, that put the wiki to a very nice stop situation too, but I'm not talking about that. -- Gem (gem / talk) 19:49, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

User page layout

Hey Emily, I've been a bad boy.. I used your user page layout as a base for my user page. Should have asked it first I think, but I really liked your layout ;-). Tell me if you would like to see it removed from my page ;-) Grtz --User Tribina Mulogo.jpg (Tribina / talk) 14:06, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

She has said it is fine in the past, (probably in an archive somewhere) I use it :) --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 16:18, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

German translation task force

Hi Emily! A time ago you visited our project page and seemed to be impressed. :) We asked you not to give this further to your localization department as our list was too small to be recognized. Now it grown bigger and bigger - and we think it's worth the look. We hope that many changes will make it into the game. :) Thanks for you help. BigBlueMonk 20.pngtalk 09:18, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

My favourite one is - "Temple Strike: A better translation would be something like "Schläfenstoß" instead of "Tempel Stoß" (as you do not hit a building)" made me chuckle :) --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 16:22, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
But I think most german don't even notice o.O poke | talk 09:09, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately. :( BigBlueMonk 20.pngtalk 09:29, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Hi guys! You guys are doing a great job :) I've been super busy lately, but I pop in and check it out periodically. I'll send another email off to the loc teams giving them a heads up about your progress, and encourage them to check it out. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:15, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, Emily :) poke | talk 01:46, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Emily, just wanted to say that you don't need to change the template any longer when there is a new update, it updates automatically. :) poke | talk 00:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

IT

Could you pass this onto the IT guys next time you are doing that Guild Wars Wiki:Requests for technical administration/Adjust job queue run rate, Thanks :) --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 12:24, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing! I passed both of those existing requests along in an email (one new, one a reminder). I'll let you know what I find out :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:28, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Hello Emily, welcome back. Hope you're feeling better. If I could also point out to you the following: Guild Wars Wiki talk:Requests for technical administration/ConfirmEdit/Update. It seems that MediaWiki has released version 1.11.0 as stable. I'm not sure if this changes anything for that status, as I'm not sure if it is a huge job to update wiki core software. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 19:35, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Oh, good point. I'll mention it to the team and see what they want to do. I know that version upgrades are always a big thing since it involves lots of folks here and it would mean that the site would be down (even if it's only briefly unavailable). I'll let you know what they say. I haven't been down that way today, so I'm not sure if the office plague spread down to IT yet or not :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:40, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
According to Tanetris, A.Net needs more Cowbell. Although I'm not so sure how that would prevent germ attacks. But thank you for forwarding it to them as well. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 19:45, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Requests for technical administration

Hi Emily, could you please pass the request on GWW:TECH to the IT staff? Thanks! poke | talk 18:59, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi Poke! Sure, I'll fire off an email before I take off tonight. Sorry I didn't notice this before! My inbox has been a big flood lately :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:40, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem with the recently installed extension, see Guild Wars Wiki talk:Requests for technical administration/Character Escapes. poke | talk 01:09, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Heya poke! I replied on that page if you get a chance to check it out. I know the IT team is literally swamped right now with a bunch of stuff, so the more specific the information I can pass along to them the better. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:31, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Page format

What page format do you use? Have a Happy New Year!--Burning Freebies 22:00, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, page format? I'm afraid I'm a bit confused. Are you asking about the layout of my userpage? --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:47, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

oh sorry i did mean the layout can you help me get on my user page? --Burning Freebies 16:35, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I use a similar one and it is fairly complicated. I wouldn't advise trying to duplicate the code until you have a decent enough knowledge of how wiki code works. In essence you should be able to copy anybodies page just by viewing the source code, and I assume if you were not aware of that your knowledge of the code is still fairly beginner. There are far simpler but yet still nice layouts to be found around the place :) --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 17:19, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Update wiki

I believe I read somewhere that you were in charge of the wiki (might even have been on your own user-page now that I think of it) and so I think you might be interrested in knowing that MediaWiki has announced a security upgrade for versions less or equal to 1.9.3, and I see that this wiki is running 1.9.2. As such, I think an upgrade would be in place. Unless of course $wgEnableAPI is set to false, but that I can't find out. :) — Galil 04:26, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up! I'll pass the update along to IT so they can check it out :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:28, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Rendering

Hi Emily. I know you're busy, but do you think it would be possible to put renders of Kanaxai and Urgoz to the top of the list when you next have time to do some rendering? See Image talk:Kanaxai.jpg for why I ask about Kanaxai, and I'm tossing the request for Urgoz in for consistency. Frankly, neither screenshot is that great, and it's a bit long of a trek to go through for better screenshots. Thanks much. - Tanetris 07:39, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

I sure can! I'll get those for you later today. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:21, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Shiny. You're a peach as always, Emily. :) Thanks much! - Tanetris 05:56, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Hehe, of course :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:18, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Question about your Rendering work

Hey Emily! All of the renders that you produce are great, and wonderful additions to the wiki. I guess I'm just kind of curious... what is involved, on your end, in creating a render? Is it a quick double-click and hit Save As -> jpg, or does it take 4 hours to create one, or... etc. Just kind of curious. Thanks for all of your work! Eryk 06:13, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

From what I have gathered so far there is a special program she has to load the model into but I am sure Emily can answer it better. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 17:41, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm 99% sure she uses an in-house program similar to WoW Model Viewer, but for Guild Wars. — Galil Talk page 17:44, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
Hiya Eryk! I use a proprietary in-house tool for the caps. The process varies at times depending on what I'm capturing, but it will usually take a few minutes per image. I then take those caps into Photoshop for cropping and saving for the wiki. It doesn't take terribly long to capture in the program...most of the time overhead is getting a chance to devote a block of time to the project (which is really tricky lately), making sure I have the current versions of all materials, geometry, etc, making sure the models are posed correctly/positioned correctly, the photoshop prep work, and the uploading to the wiki. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:31, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
I would assume she's more than likely using 3d studio max or maya, they are pretty much the industry standard in 3d modeling. It isn't terribly difficult to setup and render a ready made object, the most work goes into post production and setup like Emily said. --Lou-SaydusHow dare you put that damned dirty thing on me! 00:26, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

favicon

There was discussion about changing the navicon to be transparent going back to February 07. I put a request on RFTA but it was overlooked. I revamped the shield image: User BeXoR wiki logo mini.gif (this is the old one I suggested Shield-Logo-Mini.gif). I can work on it a bit more if needed, but I thought I'd ask if you could revive the discussion and ask IT about changing it. The link in the main page talk is dead, but I can upload a .ico version when necessary. - BeX iawtc 10:48, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Bex! I'm going to loop Reagan into this conversation, since she's taking point on the look and feel of the sites. Ultimately, she'll be able to make the call on things like FavIcos. When she gets back to her desk, I'll fire her a link :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:58, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Hiya again, Bex. AJ actually took care of that for us, so I'll pass the icon along to IT to push live! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:59, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Could the IT not simply use the current favicon and make it transparent (instead of white background)? I think it looks a lot better that Bex' icon (sorry Bex :P) poke | talk 22:03, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
I think AJ based his off of the original, but made it transparent per request. He got the request without seeing this wiki page (in kind of an out loud "Hey AJ! Can you make a transparent favicon for the wiki?" way) So, it works out for everyone in the end :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:07, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Ah, sounds very good :) Thanks Emily! (*gives a hint that gw2w would need a transparent favicon as well* :P) poke | talk 22:10, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I think there are plans to redesign that icon in general, so there will definitely be a new one coming sometime soon. We're working on a couple of crazy big projects, so that one may get bumped down in priority because it will be a bit more involved (discussions about the look and whatnot). We'll see how it goes :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:18, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
