Spoiler alert: The following text contains spoilers relating to the story of Guild Wars Prophecies.

The Chosen are commoners from Kryta who are taken by the White Mantle for recruiting. They are identified by the Eye of Janthir and are said to be taken away for learning magic from the Grand Masters at the Temple of the Unseen, which is considered a great honor. This process is addressed in a ritual during the Divinity Coast mission, in which the player takes part. Any Chosen will remain standing when judged by the Eye of Janthir, whereas those who are not Chosen will be knocked down by it.

The truth is that Chosen are those who are part of the Flameseeker Prophecies, and destined to play a part in the downfall of the Mursaat. In the Maguuma Jungle the players learn from the Shining Blade that the White Mantle are taking the Chosen into the jungle to be sacrificed on a bloodstone, in service of the Mursaat. The souls from such sacrifices are powering the soul batteries in the Door of Komalie that are preventing the armies of Titans from invading the world of Tyria.

At the end of the Sanctum Cay mission the players learn they are also Chosen and therefore fit to Ascend, earning the gift of True Sight, which enables them to see the Mursaat.

  • The Bloodstone Fen mission involves the White Mantle's attempt to sacrifice the Chosen on a bloodstone and the player must help the Shining Blade save them.
