GW2 Languages

Hi Regina, a simple question: what languages will be translated? Thanks in advice for your answer. - San Matteo 14:36, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Matteo: the language list has not been finalized yet. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 16:54, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Hall of Monuments

I was wondering if you'd be able to pester the developers for us about information pertaining to the Hall of Monument in Guild Wars 2. I was hoping that since the Hall of Monument is a connecting factor for existing players that some more information would be out by now, but since it's not I'll throw my toys from my cot and hold my breath until you tell us. ^_^ ~~000.00.00.00~~ 09:47, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

We've been pestering the developers about this for a while, but they aren't ready to make anything public at this time. When they are, it's something that will be a big announcement, and probably won't be discussed by me in any casual way (such as in the forums on the wiki) in any significant detail before a large scale announcement. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 16:57, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Artbooks and Soundtracks

Tried googling around, but I couldn't find the answer for this: Is there any way to buy the artbooks and soundtracks that are given in the Collector's Edition as separate product? And is there one of those two for Eye of the North as well (since it didn't come with a Collector's Edition)? And for the soundtrack, preferably not from DirectSong. Thanks in advance. -- Konig/talk 05:57, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

It's cool, I'll totally scan/rip the stuff for you when it's out. .flac or .mp3? —Jette User Jette awesome.png 06:57, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Good luck finding the content of the Collector's Edition for sale. This falls in the same category as people wanting to buy the Divine Aura in the online store (actually it's worse, given how you can still easily find the CE of Nightfall). Erasculio 11:01, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I assumed he meant GW2. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 11:14, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
The GW1 art books and physical CDs included in the Collector's Edition versions of the game are not available for sale separately, but the soundtracks are available digitally through DirectSong. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 21:54, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Aw, darn. I was hoping to buy the books and CDs. (Don't like DirectSong much tbh... or any online buying). And @ Erasculio, NF is the only one I don't need, since I bought the CE of it. Why aren't they sold separately? Unlike wanting to buy the Divine Aura, miniatures, or special dances, those who only want the artbook or the physical CD soundtrack (and already own the game) should be allowed to buy them separately, imo. The fact I already own the game(s) is why I don't go searching for a Prophecies and Factions CE. Also, EN didn't have a CE version, so is there no "Art of Guild Wars Eye of the North" book then? Just doesn't make sense to me... People love the art and music enough that at this point, selling them separate may help profit (since CE is so pricy for Prophecies and Factions, and many people, like myself, don't own those CE). Just my thoughts. -- Konig/talk 22:54, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
It is way to expensive to make everything sell als a solo item in the shops. Only thing that you can do is look on ebay if someone sells their artworkbook from the games. But I guess your chance is not high to find them, but you can alwese try. Selling accounts is illegal but I guess buying a artbook isnt. But I dont know it for sure. Death Slighertalk: Death Sligher 18:07, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
In my googling, I've already found various Prophecies artbooks on sale via people. Though wanted to ask for a more official sale. So question for Regina: Would buying artbooks/soundtracks on amazon or eBay be illegal? -- Konig/talk 21:29, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Spam Email

I received a phishing email from a marketing company claiming that arenanet wants to conduct a MMO survey for its users, and you have a chance to win a GW2 Art book. I have forwarded the email to support so they do have it on file (ticket #090912-002817). It leads to a fake survey where your information is stored. I have reported the email...to well everyone, but I am not the only one getting this either.

So I am telling you so you are aware of the scams flying around. --Dominator Matrix 22:35, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Ya the email(s) are becoming very wildly popular and the Federal Trade Commission, plus support are tracking the emails :/. --Dominator Matrix 00:14, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

I was skeptical, but the only personal information it asked for was name and email, and they already had my first name and email, so I went ahead and took it anyways :p ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 10:12, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Lol! Go Erasculio! Would it be possible (in future) for officially ANet-sanctioned-anythings that could be suspicious to be added to a list (somewhere) or just a heads-up? There's the announcement on the log-in about not falling for exactly this sort of thing, which turns out to be real O.o --Alex User AlexEternal Mr Bear.jpgEternal 18:28, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for the confusion. It is a legitimate marketing research email. The reason a small number of Guild Wars have received it is because they opted in to participate in future surveys, based upon a previous survey we conducted last year. So if you opted in to receiving communications in the future, you were on the list of potential survey recipients. If you opted out, then you should not have received any message. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 18:30, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Awww Regina I got confused totally :( I got the e-mail and I blocked it,thought it was from you and when I read wiki I thought it was about scam. Aww aww aww... *dong head on wall* lol,is there a possibility to repeat the e-mail or somehow unblock it or anything? Oh wow so I made myself look bad :S. Whoops, sorry for the false alarm. As I posted the think and a few people alerted me that my name a email where publicly viewable which is not the normal case for survey monkey surveys. --Dominator Matrix 23:30, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Aion Wings Emote

This is what we know so far, for customers who purchased a digital pre-order of Aion:

  • The cross promotion applies to the physical retail box copies of the game.
  • However, if you purchased the digital pre-order, you can contact Aion customer support and they will provide you with a serial code for the wing emote.

Wings

Im not sure if this has been answered yet, but i was wondering how long the wings emote will last. Is it like a /rank emote that will dissolve after a few seconds, or will you be able to walk around and do things with wings? 68.90.189.48 20:52, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm willing to bet that they'll be just like the rest of the emotes, mere seconds per 30 seconds. --Ulterion 23:13, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
The video implies that they disappear after a few seconds, like the /rank emote, instead of being a permanent emoting feature like the divine aura. --Mme. Donelle 09:33, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
As far as I know, the wing emote is just an emote rather than a hat/piece of armor. So you can't walk around wearing your wings (as cool as that would be :D). --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 00:48, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Resolution & Botnet Edition

I searched your archived for this, but didn't find much anything: what screen resolutions will GW2 support? I'm getting a 1920x1080 screen sometime soon, and I want to know whether I will be able to play GW2 in full-screen mode or not on it. I also searched your archives for this, but not as thoroughly: will Botnet Edition be supported? (That means Windows 7.) I just finished cracktivating (they make you flash your BIOS this time, ffs) and I'm considering deleting my XP partition, to leave Debian and W7 , but I'll leave it if GW2 might not be able to handle W7. P.S., please tell James Phinney to get a wiki account. I want to kiss his ass for Diablo, StarCraft and Prophecies and yell at him for EotN. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 11:10, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

You can play GW fullscreen at 1920x1080, so I don't think GW2 would have a problem with it. - Tanetris 01:34, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
...what? Why doesn't it offer me that then? Is it programmed not to let you try to run it in larger sizes than it's capable of? —Jette User Jette awesome.png 02:38, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that's your video card or its drivers. 75.142.239.153 06:04, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
I can also choose 1920x1080 in GW. Most resolution restrictions come from your monitor rather than your video card (unless it's totally ancient, in which case it wouldn't be playing GW in the first place). -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 08:06, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Odd. Stupid computer. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 08:18, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
I would guess that Guild Wars doesn't display resolutions larger than those your monitor can support. --Sirius (talk) 01:03, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
There's no reason for Guild Wars to not support a resolution that Windows and your monitor can support. It's completely natural for your display drivers to limit the available resolutions for the desktop and applications only to the ones your monitor can support, because setting different ones would make your screen go black, and it would be hard to change it back (that's why windows asks you to confirm the resolution after you change it, and reverts back if you don't click "Yes".) If you really want to experiment, and have an Nvidia graphics card, check this topic over at the Widescreen Gaming Forum.
I don't know what you mean by "Botnet Edition", but there's no reason for a game not to work under Windows 7. If anything, dropping support for an older system (XP) is more likely then not having support for a newer system (W7), though XP is still on over 50% of gamers computers. Ignoring such a large userbase is counterproductive. You have nothing to worry about in both cases. Roar! Poki#3 (talk) 17:30, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, apparently I've never bothered trying to play GW on a higher screen resolution than the one I have, but a lot of other programs allow me to go anywhere from 640x480 all the way to somewhere over 2600x(some other stupidly high number). "Botnet Edition" is a bit of a joke amongst people who like to poke fun at Microsoft; some loser released a pirated version of W7 RC2 on a torrent site that had a botnet preinstalled. Naturally, idiots didn't bother with the SHA-1 hash and he got about 26,000 zombies in 2 weeks or something before they shut him down. Anyway, what I should have mentioned initially was that I'm using the 64-bit version, and I know quite a few games for some profoundly stupid reason put a "lock" on 64-bit systems that prevents it from running purely to keep it from running. Usually you can get rid of it with a hex editor and a little time searching for the lock, but that's a bit more difficult on MMOs where they like to keep you from doing anything to the software by any means necessary (heaven forbid someone need to debug the thing). It seems unlikely now that 64-bit stuff is becoming more popular, but I thought I'd check just to be certain. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 17:53, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Information about system requirements and suggested specs, including screen resolutions, hasn't been published yet. In general, we would like to support the resolutions we supported in the past, but please don't take this as an indication or confirmation of the screen resolutions we'll support in GW2, because again, that information hasn't been released yet. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 19:59, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello Regina. European store of artbooks is out of stock already. Any chance it will get 'refilled' in the future or should we cancel our orders already? Thanks :-) Athariel 09:52, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Also would it be possible to make any other payment options available for the EU merchandizing store? The normal NCsoft store has paypal for example. poke | talk 16:45, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
I paid using my debit card. If you have eg. Visa Electron you can pay with it instead of a credit card Athariel 17:19, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

We noticed the "out of stock" message yesterday afternoon. We're looking into the out of stock error message on the EU store, and trying to confirm with them whether the art books are indeed out of stock, or whether there was some kind of error in the notification. We've notified the EU web team and they're looking into it.
As for additional payment options, as far as I know they are not looking into making additional payment options available for the various different European countries, unfortunately. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 17:33, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
UPDATE.
The EU NCsoft merchandise store was behaving properly. What happened is that the shipment of books was late, and because of this they were listed as "out of stock". The books should be arriving by the end of this week. In the meantime, everyone who placed an order in the store will have their order queued, and when the books arrive, they will be sent out in the same order that the orders were received. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 19:38, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

What is the name

of the font used in Guild Wars? Not the big one for the logo, I mean the one used in chats and stuff. Did someone at ANet make it in-house? If it was and you don't care if other people are allowed to use it, can we have it? At first I thought it was Friz Quadrata Std (best known as the font used for the big "Law & Order" logo in, well, "Law & Order"), but I'm beginning to think it isn't. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 03:52, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

It was a long time ago and probably not on the wiki, but I distinctly remember Gaile or someone saying that they would never be releasing the GW font. (Which implies that yes, it's in-house or something.) Vili 点 User talk:Vili 04:51, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

hai Linsey

moved from Feedback talk:Linsey Murdock

If I redid all the PvP-viable skill icons that are available for players to actually place on their bar, except the res sig and a select number of others, would you guys consider updating the in-game skill icons? I'll do them at the standard 56x56 in-game resolution. The default in-game icons are kinda cruddy.  :/ The sharpening seemed rushed, and there's a lot of noise that could have been avoided. I'm mostly done with them at 112x112, so 56x56 shouldn't be that hard to do. Also: if you wanted to upload all the icons that aren't usually available for people to view in hi-res (those that weren't in the skill icons pack, such as this one), it would make me happy. I know you have them stashed somewhere, but the artists who made them haven't responded to my e-mails.  :( —Jette User Jette awesome.png 09:08, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Duuuude, I would love this. Having to run TexMod just to get some slightly better default skill icons seems sucky, the really rough Elite frame and the gry areas surrounding the actual skill art are horrible and I've always wondered why they made the Elite frame so rough and the gray area so blurry. It makes it really hard to tell what some of the skill icons are :(. DarkNecrid 09:19, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
I would be overjoyed if ANet changed the default interface to the Glazed mod, but what I'm talking about is just the skill icons. They would look better, to be sure, but they would be the same icons, same size and no change to the interface. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 10:14, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
The frames make the icons not look flat. It reminds me of those rings with pictures personally, and considering the origin of the skills, that's probably a good thing. And you want skill icons to be 4 times bigger or what? I don't want to see the return of that stupid hourglass thingy, I want my skill icons to load fast. The only icons that are not "sharp" is a few Prophecies ones, but you'll probably only notice it if you're running a big interface... Roar! Poki#3 (talk) 07:44, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Meh. It's not that important to me, mostly I'm just asking because I'm making a 56x56 mod anyway for some people I know, and if ANet wanted them (I'm not on a time constraint, so they will look better) they could have them, so that A) he doesn't have to run the mod and B) they look nicer for everyone. All in all, I doubt it will be implemented, since it'd probably a lot of extra files for people to download. Can't hurt to ask, though.
And no, unless Linsey or somebody else specifically asked me to do it, I wouldn't have make them 112x112 or 224x224 for the "official" icons, because that's much larger than the default interface, and it has to be designed to suit the smallest available resolution (I believe in this case that's 800x600). My monitor is 1280x1024, and I'm upgrading to 1920x1080 sometime soon, so obviously my interface is a bit bigger than the default, skill icons especially.
What makes my icons better is all of the following: first, I remove the JPEG artifacts with a proprietary tool (I should certainly hope the artists who made the icons had the sense to send them in .png format, rather than jpeg... the point is that I do it, though), then I resize them to the desired resolution, then denoise as necessary (usually a lot), then LAB smart sharpen (or unsharp mask sometimes, but much more often the smart function is better), increase saturation on the A & B channels when necessary (not often), increase the border to 1/7th the icon size (thus, a 56x56 icon needs a 4-pixel border on each side, though the color isn't important, leaving a 64x64 picture), then coloring to alpha (this is the step 99% of people miss, which is why their icons don't "flash" correctly, such as when they're casted or interrupted). I think ANet did this process rather hastily, most likely by using a poor resampling function and then oversharpening, which makes them look sorta cruddy.  :/ I also assume they use the .dds file format, which means they probably compressed the files. Aside from leaving block-shaped artifacts, that also means that despite the reduced file size, it actually takes longer for a GPU to render them, since it has to decompress them. For files that receive so little benefit from lossy compression in the first place due to their small resolution, the best compression is actually no compression at all if you intend to put the icons in a graphics-intensive program. Actually, I'm just kidding, I have no idea of what I'm talking about. :3 —Jette User Jette awesome.png 07:58, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Well I'm pretty sure that I can say that no one wants "your" icon mod. Even if Lindsey or someone else at ArenaNet would add an "icon overhaul" project to the "to do" list, they would do it themselves, using the assets they have at the office. Asking them "Hey, do you want to use this thing I made in your game" will give you a "no" every time. I'm kind of overusing "quotes" I think... Roar! Poki#3 (talk) 09:25, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
I wouldn't be so sure Poki. Jette isn't talking about a mod, just about a series of upgraded images. These images are already the property of ArenaNet, so there is no copyright issue, and if it works out to simply be a matter of uploading this new set of images onto the server, and they are indeed better suited and better quality, I don't see why ArenaNet wouldn't happily accept them. Jette is not looking for credit/compensation, just doing this for the love of the game. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 09:56, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Ya, I gotta agree with Wyn here, idk why you think they'd just automatically turn this down. ^^ Plus he does good work (edit: maybe a good comparison on how it'd look vs current would help Jette? :D). DarkNecrid 14:29, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
I think you should better ask Joe for technical and performance limitations of the engine. BigBlueUser Big Blue Icon.pngtalk 17:05, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, Poki kind of has a point, the difference is rather negligible at 56x56. But as you can see here, it's still apparent when compared. Mine's on the left, the in-game version (ripped with texmod) is on the right. The only advantage the original has over mine is the lack of that ugly border on the edges, which is one of the advantages of using the original art rather than icons cut from the skill card packages released some time ago. The jpeg compression sort of "fused" the silver border with the edges of the image. I could probably remove it manually, but it would take a long time to do that for every image, and since that part of the icon isn't visible in-game anyway, I didn't really think it was worth the effort. Obviously, I skipped the last step here and didn't convert black to transparency, otherwise it would look really weird. —Jette User Jette awesome.png 21:01, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
No offense, but I didn't see enough of a difference between the two images at 32bbp 1680x1050 to make it worth the effort. There was some difference, yes, but not enough for me to care (or probably the vast majority of the userbase), since I don't stare at my icons all day long, I click on them (once in awhile) or hit numbers on my keyboard (more likely). I use the largest interface setting by the way, and if those are used on the smallest or default UI setting, the difference won't be noticeable at all during the actual game. This last sentence I wrote is especially true of anyone using widescreen LCD monitors. The difference was much more noticeable on CRT monitors at resolutions equal to or lower than 1152x864 though.-thejynxed- 16:46, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
