Ascalon Vanguard
The Ascalon Vanguard is the elite force under the command of Prince Rurik. They are completely independent of the financing and influence of the king, and are small but very powerful and strong. As of late, the Ascalon Vanguard have turned on the offensive, instead of the defensive style of the Ascalon Army.
The player, upon choosing a secondary profession and entering the Ascalon Academy, becomes part of this fighting force. Additionally, any player that achieves level 10 in pre-searing may assist the Ascalon Vanguard by undertaking quests given by Lieutenant Langmar.
Many of the Vanguard members followed Rurik through the Shiverpeak Mountains with other Ascalonians, though not all of them did. The Ebon Vanguard, an off-shoot of the Ascalon Vanguard, remained behind Charr lines under Captain Langmar's command. After the prince's demise, Captain Greywind continued to lead the refugees into Kryta and protected the Ascalon Settlement during the civil war.

- Although believed to be a portion of the Ascalon Army, it is never stated in game that the Vanguard is a part of the Army, and is implied through their independence to not be connected to the army.
