Nicholas the Traveler's travels[edit]
Is Nicholas broken? He's been stuck in the Prophecies campaign for five weeks in a row now. -- FreedomBound 18:00, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- Prophecies is a BIG place.... -- Wyn talk 18:07, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- True, just seems odd that thus far (excluding the EotN 3 hour tour) he's been in Prophecies 12 times, EotN 3 times, Factions 5 times, and Nightfall 5 times. Seems like even if they did want to have him be in Prophecies more often, it doesn't have to be 5 weeks in a row. -- FreedomBound 18:23, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- He would be broken if he stayed in exact same spot for more than a week. He's moving every week so it's all fine. The list of his locations may be generated randomly like the Z-Quests or ordered by the devs manually, we don't know. But if it's random it's entirely possible to be 5x in a row in one continent, especially Prophecies which is so big.--Yawg 17:39, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
- No Freedom, Nicholas is not broken. I checked with him this morning though, just to be sure, and he tells me that he has been arriving precisely where and when he means to. Now with that said, he had also mentioned a surprising number of fellow travelers taking issue with how long he has been hanging around in a particular area, as if he were somehow inconveniencing them by just being where he wanted to be!!! ...but for their sake he said he'd probably try to hasten his travels away from his homeland sooner rather than later to shake things up a bit. He did go on to mention though, just as Yawg and Wyn did, that there is a lot more that he has yet to explore there, so don't expect his stints there to always be short ones. :) [John Hargrove] talk 19:37, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks John! I was just worried that he might have lost his passport, or needed funds for the trip! Glad to hear that he's ok (and that he'll be traveling again soon)! -- FreedomBound 19:41, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, he's doing just fine. Thanks for voicing your concern!!! :) -- [John Hargrove] talk 19:48, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Seems to have been a while since Nick's had some issues with his travels. And the key issue lately seems to be with the recent war, apparently. And with the upcoming events in Cantha, I foresee his travels there may be affected as well. Are there plans in place to more concretely allow him to be where he needs to be without regard to the fourth dimension? (Plain terms question: Will WiK versions of map, and future reworks of maps be better updated such that Nicholas can be found regardless of version visited? It is irritating to learn that he won't appear ever if you have passed certain things, such as this week in Talmark Wilderness. Or if you need to pass certain requirements to see him, such as the previous, albeit fixed, incident in Watchtower Coast.) -Yossitaru 23:04, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Nicholas is a popular man![edit]
He's broken into the top 20 most popular pages! Does he have a statement about his meteoric rise to fame? -- FreedomBound 19:41, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

- Nicholas isn't actually aware of the existence of the wiki unfortunately, and I didn't want to break his immersion in the world by explaining the whole concept of it to him, so no quote can be given by him on that... Nick's locations and the release time for GW2[edit]
I should put this post with a warning that I started thinking in the middle of the night and this probably makes no sense but I was thinking about how someone mentioned (probably you as Nick is your brain child) that Nick has currently enough preplanned locations till about end of 2010ish. Does this correspond in any way to about when GW2 will be done? I was thinking that you just planned out about enough locations to keep people busy till GW2 got into beta testing as a little distraction. Is this true or should I stop thinking about Anet secret plans and plots at about 11:30pm? Katherinezoltin 05:04, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
- I imagine they are aiming for 2010, so they figured enough locations to last until about that time will be good enough, as they could always add more at a later date if need be. But then again, I'm just theory-crafting. — Jon Lupen 14:34, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
- GW2 was not a factor in any decisions made about Nicholas. Now, read it again, but this time say it out loud to make sure it sinks in (because I could get in a lot of trouble if anyone leaves my talk page with the wrong impression!): "GW2 was not a factor in any decisions made about Nicholas." ... okay, seriously though, I just wanted Nicholas (aka "Project Wumpus") to be a lot of fun, and a big part of that was the feeling that he could appear almost anywhere in the entire world. In order to do that we obviously needed to give him a lot of locations, and so we did. His list of possible haunts at launch was 137, and given 1 a week, that's 137 weeks (or ~2.6 years) of Nicholas' travels before he even considers going to the same place twice. I believe that will keep him moving around until close to the end of 2011, but that date won't mean anything except that we ran out of sensible new places for Nicholas to travel to. The worst case scenario at that time is that he starts doubling up on the same stomping grounds after 2.6 years of unique locations, and that's not so bad for the worst case. I'm just glad to know that he'll always be somewhere out there. (...beneath the pale moonliiiiight!) :) - [John Hargrove] talk 03:10, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
- So what you're saying is you confirm that GW2 will be released November 2011?
- Kidding! Just kidding. ;) GW2's release has no bearing on or relation to Nick, I got it. - Tanetris 03:32, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
- I thought my brain was thinking too far into this, thanks for unconfirming my ideas. Now, onto trying to figure out why the Mad King Stewart has reappeared as Linsey said something about a plan. - I think it would be a good idea for us to know what the titles and other stuff get us in GW2, that way it gives players more of an idea what they want to get in GW for GW2 instead of just trying to get everything they can and have more of a choice for what to aim for. Simzy 23:11, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
- Regardless of what Linsey said about poking John about this, I would not expect any details regarding GW2 ANYTHING as it could easily cost him his job as a violation of his NDA. If you want to aim for something, aim high and go for it ALL. -- Wyn talk 23:18, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

- Well I'm not going to spill any info on the HoM unless it is first posted on our website and/or by our community team, but just know that I will be holding the rewards to a pretty high standard given that I am probably the person at the office that will be the most personally affected by it since I *believe* I may be the only Anet employee with GWAMM. Hopefully that makes me a pretty good gauge for the rewards since I've pretty much done it all, and for that reason I can weigh them versus the amount of effort it took pretty well. - Talking aboug HOM... it doesn't really matter for me what we'll get in GW2, I'm much more interested in whether you have finally decided upon what HOM unlocks will count for getting something and if you can maybe share us some info about that. Things like whether there are certain specific unlocks that grant something in GW2, hidden among lots of 'duds' (meaningless unlocks) or maybe the monuments are all about the number of unlocks on them so for example every armor set unlocked is treated equal, just a +1? Same with others? We can add lots of stuff to the HoM but do they all count or there's some point where you're going over the top and adding more gives you nothing in return, like for example dedicating 21th minipet? Currently we know very little about how the HoM really works so any hints would be good.--Yawg 01:46, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Swamp Club[edit]
Hi, I've done a bit of research into swamp clubs but this particular wiki claims swamp clubs were removed as a drop because of the removal of key-less chests. Is there any chance I could get a confirmation that swamp clubs are no longer possible as monster drops. I've heard rumours they still dropped just before the release of hard mode in various areas, mainly portal wraiths in Tyria. Any information will be much appreciated.
Also I was wondering if you can confirm the existence of the "Writhing Staff". I know there is a focus by the name of Writhing, however I have heard reports of the staff but never of any drops or evidence to show it even exists. Thanks, Solus 10:54, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- On the Swamp Club Issue~> I believe I originally made the change to remove Swamp Clubs from our development server in February of 2006 (more than a year before Hard Mode), and from what I recall those were removed simply because they shared the same skin as the Ram's Hammer. It should be noted that I didn't start at ArenaNet until about 5 months after the release of Prophecies, but I was told that the Ram's Hammer was the placeholder hammer during much of its development, which meant the Swamp Club was simply a legacy item that never had its art replaced with a proper model. No model ever existed for a "Swamp Club" though, and that is why it was simply retired from our loot drops. [John Hargrove] talk 03:01, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- On the Writhing Staff Issue~> I can't find any history of one ever existing, and I don't recall ever making the item myself, so my guess is that someone may have just started a rumor about it or mixed up the names of two items by accident! So I'm calling this myth busted! :) (I've always wanted to say that...) [John Hargrove] talk 03:06, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Festival hats[edit]
Hey John, I decided to message you as the wiki lists you as an item designer that is on the wiki. As an avid Guild Wars play and wiki user, and a curious individual, I (and I am sure others) am wondering when you decide on what particular festival hats are for each individual festival, and when they are made/thought up/of (just before the festival, several months before, etc.). I was also wondering if you have decided on what hat(s) are going to be at this years Wintersday festival, and if so, is it possible to know in advance as to update the Wintersday 2009 article (you don't have to say what they are if you don't want to though). Cheers! -- Lacky 11:29, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
- I apologize for taking so long to give you a response on this Lacky! Obviously I missed the boat on answering your Wintersday question, but to answer the first question~> We generally think up hats somewhere between 1-6 months in advance, and usually implement them in the month or two leading up to the festival. We have done it further in advance than that though. For example, I believe the Lupine Mask had been designed and modeled about a year before it was released, but the Zombie Face Paint it was paired with during Halloween 2008 was done within a month of the festival. [John Hargrove] talk 02:27, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- P.S. I'm not the one that tends to choose which hats we do btw, although I guess I do sometimes get a vote! We tend to brainstorm as a group with a few artists & designers, and we go with whatever seems to generate the most excitement amongst anyone involved with the process. - Ah, so you were the one who made up the builds - nice job, i like the flavor aspect :D The Celestial Snake and the Celestial Ox are my favorites since they use the most obvious skills. I guess you used Leaping Mantis Sting (and Jungle Strike) because of Trampling Ox, right? Since the Mantis Sting isn't "that bully" i would have considered using Wild Strike and Berserk instead. Berserk suits great, but being a monster skill it's also pretty powerful, so i would likely have replaced Wild Strike for Wild Blow and Shadow Refuge + Jungle Strike for Falling Lotus Strike. The warrior bull skills could have allowed to use Falling Lotus Strike then, which again would have enabled the assassin Ox strikes. Trampling Ox could have been used less efficiently and overall the build would have been more dependant on fleeing enemies. But that again would have suited in regards of flavor, wouldn't it?^^ —ZerphaThe Improver 21:57, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Request a Clarification of lore on Abaddon[edit]
I would of asked Linsey, but her talk page is locked, so asking here: Before Nightfall was released, a bit of lore on Abaddon and the Exodus was found on the Taiwanese version of the official site. Since then, the page with that lore was removed, however a translation of it still exists here. Due to the removal of the page, it has been brought to question whether that lore is canon or not. Can you, by any chance, ask around (if you don't know yourself) whether or not that lore is still canon. Thank you in advance. -- Konig/talk 00:39, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Royal Ascalon Mascarade Ball 2010[edit]
Hello John! I have just heard from friends that a good friend of mine, Countess Reapera, is hosting the Royal Ascalon Ball this year. I know you and Linsey enjoyed it last time so if you two would like to come again, it's supposed to be held on Saturday, May 22nd. New Items?[edit]
Do you think you could make some of the currently PvP exclusive skins avaliable as PvE drops? As the skins already exist, I can't imagine it would be too hard to do (but please correct me if I am wrong). I just think It would be nice to have a few new items to find as drops or in chests :) these skins include:
Kournan Sword, Lesser Etched Sword, Etched Sword, Greater Etched Sword, Lesser Granite Edge, Granite Edge, Greater Granite Edge, Lesser Stoneblade, Stoneblade (no url), Greater Stoneblade, Canthan Shortsword, Arced Blade, Greater Arced Blade, Lord Onrah's Sword, Greater Naga Bow, Greater Sturdy Bow, Desolation Wand, Druidic Wand, Elegant Wand, Juju Scepter, Lesser Ancient Rod, Ancient Rod, Greater Ancient Rod, Silver Cane, Viridian Scepter, Silver Dragon Cane, Seahorse Scepter, Kaineng Wand, Boneclaw Rod, Darkwing Wand, Dragon Rod, Platinum Scepter, Tiger Rod, Iron Ladle, Ivory Crescent, Luminescent Lantern, Skullcrest Focus, Woven Focus, Forgotten Fan and its brothers, Shadestone, Banded Staff, Cowing Staff, Emanating Staff, Lesser Istani Staff, Istani Staff, Greater Istani Staff, Meditative Staff, Pyric Staff, Labyrinthine Spire, Shark Staff, Bedlam Staff, Darkwing Staff, Elliptical Staff, Sacred Staff, Willcrusher Staff, and the Blood Spear.
"Some of these are skins unobtainable in PvE, some represent skins that are found on a few infrequent greens (several of which are non-max, Istani items, and therefore worthless). Add these to the game, spread across all campaigns, especially in regions that lack special items (for instance, Echovald has unique gear of value, but the Crystal Desert does not). Recently, they gave PvPers access to weapon skins they couldn't get, such as the Deldrimor equipment, EotN armor, and Bonus Mission Pack stuff, because there were complaints that it was unfair that the PvP crowd could not access these weapons. It's time for the equal and fair return; these weapons exist, they should be obtainable in PvE."

- Factions and even more PRophecies have an alarming lack of skin variety. And no drops for newer professions. They could sure use some skin injection. But in the other hand, they'll drop uninscribed if they dropped there... *sigh*MithTalk 22:51, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Prophecies collector weapons update[edit]
I am wondering, will there ever be an update to Prophecies' collector weapons? The wands in particular are missing the halves casting time 20% or +5 energy modifiers, since they only have halves skill recharge 20%. Notably the ones in the Southern Shiverpeaks, such as Radamon have this issue. I could understand not providing access to dual modded wands in the Desert, but it is kind of odd that they are not dual modded in the Southern Shiverpeaks since that is the last area there are collector weapons (the Ring of Fire islands only have exp scrolls and consumables that were added in an update). In addition, the collector wands from Factions sometimes have +5 energy <50% HP when the corresponding inscription allows for +7 energy <50% HP. It doesn't matter to the general public, but when you have multiple characters with heros to equip and don't have the option of getting green items with 20/20 mods(because there are some attributes that are severely lacking in this regard, save for Droknar's endgame greens). Thanks for any insight you can give. --Life Infusion «T» 18:01, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

- Especially collector. No one gives a damn for generic skin/generic mod weapons anymore. If ever. It would be nice if their dialogue/collection could match Nick - just without the variable (both item and location). I like the ability to give multiple sets to the collector at once, even if it means one extra click. And Prophecies' collectors are majorly lacking in their dialogue department. -- Konig/talk 21:25, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

GW2 gear question.[edit]
After reading the article, all came down to two possibilities:
- Gear may drop at any level, but if the stats you like at in one item, and the appearance are in another, you can put the stats in the skin you want with the stones, instead having to keep looking for something of that skin at your level. This would be as if you could pick the stats you like from an unique a level 20 sword, and apply them to an unique sword from Istan, which is faster than looking for a maxed item with max stats and that skin, yet still possible.
- The other possibility, it's the one most people think: Certain gear will drop ONLY within a certain range of levels (a tier) and if you want, let's say an item that drops only at levels 40..50 to be level 80, you MUST pay. This would be, for example, as if the the Kaineng Center armor crafters were removed, and the ONLY way to get the 'noob' armors with level 20 stats would be by crafting a level 20 armor somewhere else, a noob armor from one of the Shing Jea crafters, and then having to pay for a consumable to get the stats from the level 20 into the noob armor.
The article is a bit ambiguous, and as it's written, it suggest any of those two. What I'd like to know, is which one of those two it is. So, what it is? "A faster way you have to pay for", or "the only way"? MithTalk 00:02, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
