Restoration request
Please restore this as per Guild_Wars_Wiki:Formatting/Missions. I don't know why a sysop would delete it, when it's part of a guideline usage. Kaisha 07:08, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
- Guidelines are guidelines. They do not trump consensus, and it looks to me like there's a consensus on the relevant talk pages that this template and the others like it are redundant, with the only objections raised being appeals to bureaucracy. A deletion tag was placed, it was left in place for 2 weeks to allow for discussion, and then deleted appropriately. Not restoring. Feel free to work on making the guideline reflect consensus. - Tanetris 07:55, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
- Will do, once consensus is formed on the reflecting talk page. Kaisha 08:21, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Changing a talk page comment made by another user
98.94.144.147 (talk • contribs • logs • block log) has changed a talk page comment made by another user [1] and reverted an edit that changed the comment back to its original form. [2] The user that originally made that comment has stated that the IP isn't him. --Silver Edge 05:03, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
- Considering the IPs only three edits are reverting someone's comments for no apparent reason (other than censorship perhaps?), I've blocked him. ~FarloTalk 05:27, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Signet of Secrets (again)
For the 12-month period ending mid-July 2011, there were 83 edits to the Signet of Spirits article:
- 6 were substantial and were made by registered users.
- 3 were administrative protective edits.
- 74 were vandalistic or reversions of vandalism.
As a result, the article was blocked for three months. 50 hours after the block expired, the article was vandalized another 10 times over a 48 hour period, which resulted in several more administrative blocks, each of which was evaded by the vandal.
This article is an attractive nuisance. It will keep getting vandalized as long as the vandal has access to the internet.
I urge the admins to indefinitely extend the current semi-protection. (At the very least, it should be be longer than the previous block, which would be consistent with how blocks are extended against individuals.) The last 15 months provide strong evidence that the community is better off with the protection than without. Thanks. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 00:58, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
- Given the rate of vandalism and the stubbornness of a few of them, I'd agree with the continued protection of the page, at least for unregistered users. ~FarloTalk 01:17, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
- Is there any way to trace the vandal IP and contact local authorities/his ISP? Generally internet vandalism isn't taken lightly by said organizations. That would be a better long-term solution to the problem, both for the user with mental troubles and for the wiki. -Auron 05:56, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
- http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/71.251.139.31 and http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/71.125.136.11, both coming from New Jersey on Verizon. I've never contacted an ISP about vandalism, but if you wish, go for it. Oddly enough, both IPs have less blacklists (according to that site) than mine o.0 ~FarloTalk 08:42, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Use of the GW2 wiki to evade email blocks
Given the global nature of accounts here, apparently users blocked from emailing users on this wiki can still use the other one to email the same users, since account information is all the same there, or something. So while I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring it up, someone might want to do something about that. Maybe. I dunno. I mean, they are separate wikis, and all; in theory someone with terrible issues here could behave there, right? Although I suppose using there for ban evasion isn't exactly behaving, now is it... *wanders off, mumbling* -— Apheori (talk) 02:24, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Use different e-mail addresses for the two wikis if you're worried about harassment. elix Omni 03:36, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- It's not that; a User:Ariyen apparently emailed multiple users trying to get them to edit for her by proxy, and considering that she's banned on both wikis, indefinitely with email blocked here, and for a year there, it seems to be a bit of a hole, especially since by default any user here is contactable through the same account and account information on that. Basically a form of ban evasion, but while I don't know how the database(s) are set up around here, either a global block or just changing the settings there too would resolve it in cases such as this. I didn't really want to get involved with specifics, though. Sometimes specifics involve scary bitey things, especially when it involves... folks... -— Apheori (talk) 10:37, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- It's up to those users to simply ignore her - she probably has their contact information from past exchanges. Or are people still really getting emails *via* the wiki from her? -Auron 12:44, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, yea, she's not email blocked over there. I'll fix that. -Auron 12:51, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Global CSS changes for the Interactive Maps
Following this discussion,
- We're trying to implement shadows and better text effects for the maps, but for them to work on IE, we'd need to edit MediaWiki:Common.css.
I've copied the code to be added into the hidden box below (it breaks the page layout) so we can keep the discussion in one place.I'm not very knowledgable in the code myself, so I'll leave this one up to Tub to explain. ~FarloTalk 04:48, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Nicholas the Traveler new maps
gory details: For the moment, I think the consensus is that we continue naming Nick's location maps using the first cycle's naming convention, Nicholas the Traveler location YYYYMMDD.jpg
. For any cycle #2 locations that are repeats, we should create redirects rather than uploading duplicate maps. Anyone can do this by typing the correct file name into the search box and then clicking on the redlink for creating a new article.
However, since this cannot be done using the upload file utility, we are probably going to see other examples of people creating files (instead of redirects). This will lead to requests to delete that file so that the redirect can be created. As soon as that happens, we will lose this week's map from Nick's article until we create the redirect.
Alternatively, we could go with a new naming convention (and update the relevant templates):
- Cycle 1:
Nicholas the Traveler location <requestedItem>.jpg
- Cycle 2:
- If same location, use same convention.
- If different location, use
Nicholas the Traveler location <requestedItem> Cycle 2.jpg
.

- Tub implemented a better solution, making the above moot. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:53, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Talk:Bonus effect
Are main space talk pages suppose to be deleted if its associated article was deleted, even though the talk page had the deletion discussion relating to the deletion of the article? If no, then Talk:Bonus effect should be restored, since that discussion may help users in the future determine if that page should be created. --Silver Edge 08:28, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- I agree, some (most?) similar discussions are worth preserving. Could an admin restore the talk page? Maybe Silver Edge or I can find another article to which the convo can be moved. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:06, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- For reference's sake, GW2W has gw2:Category:Orphaned talk pages for this purpose (and the discussions are kept on their original pages).
- Edit: forgot I'm an admin again and can view deleted pages. Anyway. I generally prefer to keep talk pages when they have substantial or important discussion which could be relevant to other cases or that same case should someone else recreate the page. That doesn't really apply to this talk page (it's 3 short comments regarding one skill that one user interpreted in a way that most others wouldn't/didn't). pling 18:12, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- Maybe Silver Edge and I are misremembering which discussion took place where — neither of us are admins, so we don't have access to the deleted text. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:50, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Alas, the main page is still showing the cool wintergreen/minty fresh colors. (On the other hand, it's nearly CNY, so perhaps we should just switch in two weeks to its theme, assuming there is one.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:52, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
- Well where's the fun in that? I reverted to the last non-Wintersday theme. Where there any changes besides the theme that I missed? ~FarloTalk 20:17, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Partywide IMS and Related Skills
I recently updated the "related skills" lists of various IMS skills, because I disagreed that some of the skills in the lists were related. But also because I wished for them to be more specific and as so narrowed down. Afterall, there are specific Pages for skills that are closely related all up, such as IMS, IAS etc. However some of my edits were reverted, and when confronting the person who reverted them (which I did in a somewhat rude manner, without it being the intention, and for that I apologize), I was met with hostility, and continuous refusal of discussing or focussing on the disagreement, and rather use personal attacks (however discreet they might have been). The user who reverted my edits is Thrain (talk • contribs • logs • block log). Exmaples of hostility include make obviously poor examples that the user attached as being my opinion (making me sound stupid) "by your logic Seed of Life shouldn't be linked to Healing Seed". "Seed of Life and Healing seed shouldn't be linked, they can just check the enchantment page if they want to use them!". Examples of lacking interest in discussing include "Yes, 6 linked skills is better than 2 or 3 in this case. Why? Because there are 6 skills that related to it." Hope to get a revision of this issue, and get it settled. Thank you very much Gaudy Gourd God 17:48, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

FYI Block evasions (suspected)
A blocked user has been suspected of evading their suspension using two different IPs:
- 98.119.198.186 a few days after the original block (19 May).
- Confirmed via CheckUser
- Blocked for 3 months.
- 71.160.93.144 about six weeks after the original block (30 June).
- Confirmed independently by two different non-admins via style analysis. Examples include: verbatim pasting, sorting one row, and misapplication of redirect template (among others).
- Blocked for 3 months.
No further action required as of this point; the IPs have been blocked and the edits were reviewed/cleaned-up as needed. We hope that this post serves merely as a point of information and does not need to be used in the future. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 21:52, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- Actually one further action was required. Original account ban extended an extra 3 months. - Tanetris 22:24, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

- The latest evasion on 8 July was barely a week after the previous block. This adds up to three attempts in under two months versus an original block duration of three months. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 07:14, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Request to lock "Ask an account question"
As discussed on it's talk page and now on the the page itself, it seems time to lock HELP:ACCOUNT so that it points people directly to the official forums. It's been ages since any of us have been able to provide meaningful advice for those with account questions; the forums are much more efficient than we can hope to be.
I therefore ask that the article be semi-protected, so registered users can archive the most recent questions and update the instructions. (And then perhaps we can leave it at that; it's rare that registered users ask a question there.) (PS If people want to discuss other plans, the best place is on the article's talk page.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 04:37, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

It looks like someone has figured out a way to get new gibberish accounts past the Abuse Filter. The accounts haven't done anything yet but it's something to look into. Cress Arvein 16:17, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- I second this. I've noticed it in the Special:RecentChanges page, and then decided to look at the new user log (Special:Log/newusers). This is getting way out of hand. Of all of the new accounts that have been made since at least 19 August, I would venture that only one seems to be a legitimate page. I realize we can't disable registration, but this requires attention promptly. -«troy.frostwind» 05:51, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Er... why? The accounts are being created and attempting to edit, but the edits are being stopped by abusefilter. Banning an account that hasn't made an edit is pointless. -Auron 08:32, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- It's more the matter of having a million new accounts being added, without any intention of helping the wiki. I'm not entirely willing to rule out the idea that they're all from the same (or similar) IP addresses, and I feel like even if it doesn't have a bearing on the speed/performance of the wiki, if we have the ability to stop this from happening, it's something we can/should address. «troy.frostwind» 15:31, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Account creations are being done by a wide range of ips, so it's hard to stop them with just blocks. We'd need a better verification for registration (CATcha?) but that would take resources that Anet just doesn't have now. Since they aren't actually making many edits, it's fine as-is. --JonTheMon 16:32, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Valid point. I hadn't looked at their IP addresses individually, I was just assuming they were related. At the very least, I wanted to make sure that people higher up than me were aware this was happening, which you all do. /cookie «troy.frostwind» 16:40, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

- I see that and no one is QQing we put to much time and effort in building our guild wiki site and was told the last time they hadnt returned when they had and now again only thing different now after reverting it back everything is out of align on it nothing is in order like it was and lined up porperly and we can't get it fixed right after this guy vandalized it yet again today. If you call reporting vandalism that ha happened more than a couple times by the same person QQing after some much time and work went into our wiki site you are wrong my friends.Jenn 15:16, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Jenn. I'd like to come in support of the individuals such as Auron, Ab.er.rant and Chieftain Alex that are dedicating a certain amount of their free time for the benefit of the community on this official wiki. While the term QQ is inappropriate, I'm sure they meant no disrespect (they should also be thanked for taking actions to protect your guild's page after all). Please understand that this wiki is run by players who volunteer their free time to help users and manage pages. They cannot be "expected" to do this as a job or asked to do something that they cannot do. Please do continue to report any abuse like these, in particular to me (on my talkpage) if you have further evidence, and we can even take this up with Customer Support to see if anything else can be done. Thanks for your understanding! --Stephane Lo Presti talk 17:50, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

- So this morning our page was vandalized yet again by this same person. You siad :said person hasn't returned" well this is 4 times now one after you telling us that. This really needs to stop. We do not know who this is they do not have a wiki account only shows different IP's I un did the several changes he did but now our page is messed up everything is out of a line and can not get it fixed right the way it was now. Auber un did some of the chamges too but our page still doesn't look like it did nothing is in order and aligned and can't fix it.Jenn 13:58, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry to disappoint you but... permaban ingame doesn't mean banned from the wiki — it's not tied to the game account. Anyone can edit the wiki, hence why it's really of limited effectiveness to block dynamic IPs that make infrequent edits. -- ab.er.rant 15:50, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- That's fine we don't need any haelp with this guy. anet handled it for us he now has a perma ban. thank you.Jenn 15:38, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hasn't returned? How is 3 times he's vandalized it up to 2 weeks ago hasn't returned? and guild wars isn't dead we still have our guild and alliance there and in guild wars 2 we play both.Jenn 15:31, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- Said person hasn't returned, so why do anything? (unless you want the page protected from all editing cos gw1 is dead and all.. ) --Chieftain Alex 18:17, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- When we have the same person we have reported 3 times vandalizing the page yes it would be appreciated.Jenn 15:56, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- There have been a whopping 3 IP edits in the past 6 months, all on the same day. You reverted the edit and everything was fine. Do you really need admin intervention on that page? :/ -Auron 03:48, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- well thank you for the help and answer...Jenn 23:41, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Talk:User interface
By the reasons which are not completely clear for me, this page several times for last few days became a target of vandalism. I can guess that User interface as a common term does exist in many Wikis, so auto-attack on the talk page with this name almost certainly will be successful. I would suggest to set the semi-protect mode with restriction to edit/write for unregistered users. At least for some time. --Slavic 15:39, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

MediaWiki update
Are there plans to ever update the version of MediaWiki in use here? This is a very, very outdated version at this point - it's around two years old. Shifuimam 22:49, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yes there are plans (already in motion). I started writing a massive update message for all our wikis for more than 2 weeks now, but have been derailed by a few urgent tasks. I should be able to publish that message soon (next week?) on my wiki journal with more information about our upgrade roadmap. Thanks. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 23:36, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
- That is great news! Thanks very much for the fast response. Shifuimam 01:57, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Creating New Account
Hi! I'm somewhat of a new player in GW (been playing since last October), but I really enjoyed the game and want to get involved a little more. That's why I'm asking to get an account on the Wiki, so I can help and have my own space to work on my toons and other things.
Thanks for the attention, have a nice day :)
- Hello! I've just tested this, and it turns out you can still create your GWW account on GW2W - you can do that here. Since accounts are linked, you can go create your account on GW2W and then return here and login ;) have fun! -GWW account creation test (talk) 16:55, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
- ^apparently I was logged in on the test account. -Chieftain Alex 17:07, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
Admin Defiant Elements - Page Undeletion Request Plz
Hello,
I'm not sure what exactly you need to facilitate my request, but the guild I represent had their page deleted sometime within the last six weeks. The guild name under Guild Wars (original version) was "Crusaders of Ancaria (CoA)". I edited the page within the six week timeframe, so I'm certain it was active.
Please let me know if there's anything that can be done to retrieve the page, and if you need any further information.
Thanks so much!
