Massivity
I just want to say WOW. Not the game, but this animal is HUGE. I'm not sure if it grows as it levels, but even at Level 5, its bigger than the guildie who charmed it... -elviondale (tahlk) 05:45, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Growth
The Phoenix does grow, my level 20 Hearty Phoenix is taller than I am, but the untamed one in the Hall is a bit shorter than me, so the amount of growth isn't much but is comparable. :) Captain Doughnut 23:11, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Dire Rainbow Phoenix?
I have tried to level this thing up to 15 many times in some of the safest places I can, and have managed to raise a Dire before for other pets like a regular phoenix, yet this one stays Aggressive only at level 15... Am I alone with this problem? Does anybody have any concrete proof that a Dire with this is even possible, and not some bug? - Andrew 23:21, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
It was a bug. They fixed it yesterday I think. Readem Warning: Ignore this User if at all possible. 23:35, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
This was definitely not fixed yet, since my current phoenix was one of two attempts with the same result today, a level 15 aggressive... hmm... - Andrew 00:18, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Did you reset the name or zone in and out of town? The name doesn't update til you do. Other than that I don't see why it should stay Aggressive. According to someone else it does evolve to the next stage at level 15 but it only goes Elder instead of Dire. Would kike to see some more confirmation though Liselle Morrow 12:11, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Seems you were right, Andrew. I've tried only once, but I got the same result, a level 15 Aggressive pet. I tried resetting the petname several times as well as zoning in and out of towns, but it made no difference.
Seems the rumour is true and the Rainbow Phoenix really is bugged. Liselle Morrow 19:53, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- /petname Dire Rainbow Phoenix. There, fixed that problem ^_^ -elviondale (tahlk) 20:38, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

- I've found out what's causing these guys to fail to evolve to dire, and I'll try to get this fixed in the next update.Andrew McLeod 01:32, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
(Reset Indent) SO the bug has been fixed, but what does this mean for those who have already leveled the Phoenix to level 20 with no final evolution? Do we have to start over with a level 5 phoenix? Trobinson97 11:07, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Applaudes Andrew McLeod* Thank you ever so much for fixing this. It's been bugging me for ages. And to Trobinson, yes I think you will need to start over sadly. When my own level 15 phoenix stayed aggressive I didn't bother continuing to level it, however I did take it into AB once or twice where it died a few times. So when this update rolled in yesterday I immediately checked my pet and reset it's name: still Aggressive. Not surprising really seeing as it needs to level up to evolve. I slammed on a protective petting build and took it out until it leveled. Result: Level 16 - Elder... Still after getting a new one and leveling it up again from scratch I ended up with a nice Level 15 - Dire one :) So yes, considering it only takes about 4-5 hours to get a new one leveled, on the grand scale of things it could have been worse. Liselle Morrow 12:05, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Monument?
Does this thing get its own monument separate from the Imperial Phoenix? Nietzsche 11:51, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- Currently, you get the default generic monument (animal companion)
Body-blocking
Does this pet body-block more because of it's huge size? --New.Dorling 21:28, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Though, it may be the largest pet in the game, there is 1 Pet that beats it in height when they are both at lvl 15+, the White Moa, its bigger than Jora!
But my friend has a Rainbow Phoenix, and we did a size comparison, seems White Moa's are taller Aerie swiftarrow 01:09, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Do you like this pet? Do you think its right to place this pet on the top of the pets - the end GW pet? I personally find it too colorfull and shiny to suit me, or my "dark" ranger, i prefer the Black Widow. Spaghetti 21:45, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

GW2

- So you're saying it wouldn't be nice to have in explorable areas? Also, it's been said that "They even established Asura Gates in major cities to provide safe passage from city to city and promote trade." Death Leveling
IS it possible to death level a dire phoenix using Lively was Mei Ling, etc? --Risus 21:52, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- Lively was Mei Ling isn't a real skill. What skill are you talking about? — ク Eloc 貢 02:53, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- I assume he means Lively Was Naomei. And no it doesn't work. You fail and return to outpost when you die, not res, even holding the ashpot. --Valshia 05:08, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

- Just train it the real way. Use this build:
Otyugh's Cry | Feral Aggression | Call of Protection | Brutal Strike | Enraged Lunge | Whirling Defense | Optional | Optional |
- Dwarven Stability and Great Dwarf Weapon are great optionals if you have your rank up. Equip a melee weapon and a shield. Go to Augury Rock and kill the Doppelganger over and over in Hard Mode. Engage the Dop at melee range, activate Whirling. It will do the same. Hold its attention while the pet slaughters with unblockable Brutal and Enraged. +396xp, takes about 45 seconds per run. Repeat until the pet gains Dire at level 15 (or continue if you want get it to 20). It's tedious but fast (2-3 hours to level 15), and a foolproof method of training any pet to Dire. I've done it many times. Arshay Duskbrow 22:14, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- Even better place is to use the same/similar build and have it kill the snow worms outside of Boreal Station. Much easier/quicker, and it can be done in NM or HM (:Hint: there are chests in the area) as well for even more XP 195.183.80.137 15:51, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
- Or take it to the Zenagerie and pay 5k faction... Paddymew 17:27, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
- Another good method is to simply go nuts in a Junundu in the Desolation. Pets automatically die when you enter the wurms, but still gain experience from kills, no matter how far away from them you travel. Be sure to let it peck away at the Master of Healing for an hour or so first, though, otherwise it will evolve to Elder instead of Dire. --Mme. Donelle 01:14, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

- This note needs to be removed. there is a method in which you can death level ALL pets through the menagerie. Its very simple. Bring 1 Necro hero with as many rez skills as you have unlocked, pour his points into soul reaping. (the more soul reaping he has the better) bring two other heros with vampy weapons and Sacrifice skills. (BiP Blood ritual etc etc) also bring a vampy weapon and low health set + a vampy weapon and high health set for yourself. it should be noted that this method is most easily done on a pvp ranger, however any pvp charachter will work, after youve equipped your heros with the lowest possible health they can have but NOT the vampy weapon yet, enter the zaishen menagerie (its important to remember you must have unlocked the animal before this method is possible). find your animal of choice, in this case, the rainbow pheonix, attack him a few times, getting his health low but being careful NOT to kill him. if your one who wants to be extra careful then do it twice, ensuring his health gets close to dying before setting all your heros to avoid combat and having them sac themselves on your Necro-rezbot. set a flag for your hero rezer thats in the general vicinity of the pet you wish to death level and just let him have at it. you can even go afk if you want. he will spam hard rez's and your vampy weapon will quickly kill you, giving the aggroed (but not attacking) pet, experience. after your all done it should evolve into a lvl 20 hearty pheonix. which you can turn in to the trainer at the menagerie and trade for whichever level of whichever evolution you so desire. I would post a video but i dont know how to do it. Test this theory if you dont beleive me, but the note about this not being death level-able is incorrect. you can use this method on any and all pets in the menagerie. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.20.33.106 (talk).

Special Case: Evolving a Dire Rainbow Phoenix
A Dire Rainbow Phoenix is a special case. It cannot be death leveled because in order to tame it, one has to be the ONLY one in the party while inside the Hall of Monuments. When the Rainbow Phoenix kills you inside the Hall you must Return To Outpost. The NPC's inside the hall will not resurect you (they will heal you though).
The first thing to know is that there is no risk of loosing the Rainbow Phoenix, so if you fail to evolve an Agressive Rainbow Phoenix (at level 11), just give your Phoenix to a Pet Tamer and go back to the Hall of Monuments to tame another.
You can use the Standard Pet Levelng methods discussed here to begin training your pet Rainbow Phoenix. Once the pet reaches level 7, you may begin using other methods for rapid advancement.
Assuming a People Know Me title and access to all campaigns, a method that works well is to set your skill bar with this template [OgASY5LT/GehcG8GrSripGbG]:
- Otyugh's Cry
- Feral Aggression
- Call of Protection
- Brutal Strike
- Heal as One (Elite)
- Great Dwarf Weapon
- Dodge
- Charm Animal
Using Normal Mode for levels 7-9 and Hard Mode afterwards, kill the Doppleganger (Augury Rock (Mission)) over and over again. Since the mission transports you to the The Dragon's Lair, it is convenient to buy 2X XP Rampager scrolls there. Use these to double the earned mission XP. To maximize the pet's ratio, target the Doppleganger, lock the pet's mode to Fight and walk away from the fight (letting the pet do all the fighting). Use Dodge to speed up the tedious walk at the begining of the mission. Mission Entry to Entry time is less than 1.5 minutes.
To speed up evolution, immediately after leveling up, run the Augury Rock mission 8 times using the 2X XP rampager's scrolls. Afterwards, use the Junundu method (below) to rapidly move to the next level. Repeat mission just after each new level to assure proper ratios. If the pet has not been marked as Aggressive by level 12, the pet has not been trained properly, start all over.
- (My thanks to Arshay Duskbrow for the Doppleganger idea and the base skills.)
AunweeOfTheNiaad 22:08, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- Forgive me, but I believe my skillbar and method is better. You must tank the Doppelganger's attacks yourself, or the damage-given-to-damage-taken ratio for the pet may be compromised. The Dop's attacks do quite a bit of damage, and this damage still "counts" for evolution even if it's mitigated by Call of Protection, Otyugh's Cry and so on. There is no need for Heal as One at all. A Feral+Enraged+Brutal combo will have the Dop dead in about 15 seconds. Whirling Defense will enable you to hold out that long. If you must have a run buff to make the walk less tedious, well...you're running a pure Beast build, so why not simply use Run as One? Also, Junundu Leveling will result in an Elder pet, because the pet is not doing any damage. Arshay Duskbrow 19:55, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Junundu Leveling
This method levels up a pet quickly. First be careful to only do this with a pet that has already fought well from levels 5 through 7. If attempting to evolve a dire pet, make sure to let the pet fight in an appropriate area for its level (as soon as a level has been newly attained) to assure a proper training ratio.
In Hard Mode, enter the Sulfurous Wastes from the Gate of Desolation with a lean team of heroes (3 or 4 at most, the less the better). Enter the Junundu. The pet will "die". This is OK since it is not really dead, and it will gain experience from all kills. This "death" does not count against it. Go on a killing spree on the southern parts of the area. You can earn Lightbringer points while you are at it. Normally one or two runs of the southern area "circle" will level up your pet. Entry to Entry, each run takes less than 20 minutes. HoM
Can you display this pet in the hall of monuments? Or just cap it there? Goody 11:54, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
- You can display it in the hall but it will have the default pet statue(the one with the bear, wolf and lynx). If you want to put a phoenix there, you need to get the phoenix after the last mission in Cantha. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:194.1.130.37 (talk).
- I think it's bad form for ArenaNet to not put a dedicated monument of this in the HoM, especially since this is such a time consuming pet to get and that the imperial phoenix gets it's own monument and is far easier to get. I hope they rectify this and don't require people to have to re-charm a new Rainbow Phoenix in order to get a monument displayed. Lady Elyssa 10:45, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Still No Luck Evolving this Pet
I've read everything above, and all the articles on Dire Pet evolution on this wiki and the wikia site. I'm using the following build for my pet to quickly solo the Frost Worms outside Boreal Station for 396 XP each in hard mode: OgASY5LTySriehnGcGbGqS/G
Enraged Lunge | Great Dwarf Weapon | Feral Aggression | Symbiotic Bond | Call of Protection | Charm Animal | Predatory Bond | Otyugh's Cry |
Now, I've read a lot of comments in which people talk about how evolving a dire rainbow Phoenix should be as easy as any other pet, but I've read far fewer comments from individuals who actually own their own dire Rainbow Phoenix. I'm not interested in speculation, or input from people who don't have a dire Rainbox Phoenix. If you do have one evolved to dire, can you please provide any information on what, specifically, you did to evolve it? I understand that there was, at one point, a bug that prevented dire evolution. Since that bug has been fixed, one ought to be able to evolve a dire rainbow phoenix relatively easily - but it's just not working for me. Ninjatek 18:35, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Dire Evolution
A good way to have this pet become Dire at level 20 is to enter the Hall of Monuments in Hard Mode and make the bird become aggressive. Once you have done that, stand near Ogden who will heal you. Take off pieces of your armor until you find a suitable amount of damage that Ogden is able to out-heal. Since this is Hard Mode, the bird will do more damage (I think...). With Ogden healing you and the bird doing large amounts of damage, it is safe to go afk. Come back every once in a while to check your connection and see how things are doing. After a couple of hours, my bird did somewhere around 20,000 damage. After all this use Charm Animal and it's yours. With all the damage its done, it's safe to assume it will do more damage than its tamer and will become Dire. This worked for me, and I am positive I did more damage than it as I leveled it.

- There's an npc version of dunkoro in the hom that stands by the door. that's what he's talking about. On a side note, I think death leveling might work in the menagerie, so you can just do that once you unlock the bird. I'll be testing later today. 71.59.231.50 23:54, 24 April 2009 (UTC) edit: apparently, you can't get the rainbow phoenix if you take heroes with you to the menagerie, so probably no go on that. 71.59.231.50 23:56, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

- Use standard procedure for leveling up a pet to Hearty... possibly by LB/SS farming in Junundu from Ruins of Sahlajah. When finished, show your lvl 20 hearty pet to Emyrd the Tamer, and when you come to the Zaishen Menagerie alone, you can have the option of picking up a lvl 20 dire rainbow pheonix from the trainer. Skie M 14:39, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
easy way to make it dire, just requires some time.
Aggressive/Dire evolutions don't matter about kills, just the damage the pet deals is higher than the damage it takes. Get one of these, and go to the isle of the nameless. Make it attack the master of healing. All you gotta do, just leave it there for a couple hours. 24.233.254.51 04:07, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Just curious how this works.....I get that it's doing a ton of damage vs damage taken, but the animal is not gaining any experience because nothing is dying. Perhaps I'm wrong in assuming that the pet gains levels through experience like a player or hero, but that would only make sense.154.5.176.59 06:29, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
