User issues

While I know you might feel strongly about such matters, please try to not go overboard when it comes to dealing with the actions of other users. If a friendly warning is warranted, do that, otherwise, bring it to the attention of the sysops - be careful not to become too involved to the point where things get personal. Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 11:29, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

^-^ not personal, I made sure not to violate any policies in my debate with him. I just dont think it is a good idea for him to be going around and slapping NPA violations on peoples talk pages, thats all. :o) --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 17:47, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Just saying, once you've issued a warning or two it's probably best to just leave it to the sysops - if you don't think action is being taken fast enough, hound the sysops, not the troublemaker. :) Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 01:35, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

To add to Shadows comment, if you do use certain parts of her userpage; for example the tabs, basic layout, etc; make sure you give the main credit to Lensor since the design was originally created by her and modified somewhat by Shadowphoenix. Having said that Zyko, personally I would go with a more unique userpage design since this basic layout is used by far too many users in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with getting inspiration from others; my userpage was inspired by a number of users Ab.er.rant being one of the main ones; but if too many users use the same layout userpages start to look a bit boring and not so unique. --Kakarot Talk 22:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Character Bios

Is it weird that I love not only your humour page but also your character bios? You both broke GWW:1RR, you might want to read the "I've violated 1RR. What do I do?" section on the policy page. Even better, do what should have been done first anyway: Take it to the talk page and ask other users how they feel about the issue. --Xeeron 16:26, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Elections

A few quick questions before the elections get here (I am going to try to ask each sysop and users, who imo deserve it, these questions):

  1. If you were nominated would you accept?
  2. If so, Do you believe that you would make a good bcrat?
  3. Would you be able to make wise choices when it comes to selecting administrators?
  4. Would you be sure to explain your actions when using your powers as a bcrat?
  5. Would you wear you status as a bcrat as a badge?
  6. Would you consider policy before taking any and all actions?
  7. How do feel towards our wikis community?

That should be enough. Thanks! --Cursed Angel talk 21:41, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Irony much lol...
  1. Yes, I do not really think it would go anywhere but it would be intersting
  2. Yes, I think I would make a excelent admin no matter if it is bcrat or not
  3. Yes, I would consider the opinions of the users who voted in the RfA before taking action
  4. Yes, I strongly believe that each bcrat should explain why they are doing what they are doing if it involves them using there bcrat powers
  5. No, I would mention it on my userpage but I would not flaunt my status around
  6. Yes, if I were to take any actions I would always consider policy (bcrat or not :) )
  7. Everyone should know that, but in case not: I hold Guild Wars Wiki's community above all else since it is the community that creates the wiki.

Lets see where hes going with this lol --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 21:47, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Intentional?

Hey, on your little character toolbar thing, you have "heroes" misspelled. One more question

Ok, one more stupid question, and then I'll shut up >.<. Can other people still consider running for bcrat? I'm tempted to run for the heck of it (and my political and debating skills are stronger then my editing skills), but I don't have the slightest idea if I can nominate myself, or if I can even do it by now. Can you answer this? I'll shut up after this one, I promise >.< --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 03:51, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Shad! Looking for Opinion

Hi Shadow! I was wondering what your opinion was on this:

A lot of people, especially during arguments, tend to arbitrarily link things. So, while the text reads, "So-and-so has never done anything wrong" the text links to something that they have done wrong. I was wondering how you feel about this activity on the wiki; if it should be governed by policy, and perhaps if someone uses arbitrary linking in an against-policy way (such as NPA) how would you react to it. Thanks! MiraLantis 06:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

hmmm, that is a tuffie. I think sometimes that tool can be misused, such as someone did something in the past but they came to understand what they did wrong and someone uses that against them. At the same time however, I think it can be a good tool as to point out a violation that isn't from the far past. I think that it might be a good idea to govern this by a policy. May I ask why you asked this question? I am just curious :o) --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 13:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

"Vandals"

If you want to inform someone about vandalism, you should make sure if that person is actually vandalising instead of smacking down a template that basically says "that's vandalising". For example, 91.117.192.223 seems to be the creator, and one of the major editors, for Guild:Sacred Champions Of Abyss Realm, which you can tell from the page's history and contributions.

I know you're looking out for vandalism and everything, which is a great thing, but for cases when something may not be vandalism and from the first look it seems like vandalism, something like "Hi there, if you want your guild page to deleted, please insert a {{delete|reason}} on the page, otherwise it may seem like a non-constructive edit" would be infinitely better. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ Talk 20:09, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

I realised that after I looked into the history :P, then I saw you marked it for deletion :S. I forgot to look at the history b4 putting something on his talk page, sorry about that. I put "never mind" on his talk page. Sorry, I usually look in the history b4 doing that, but I didn't this time for some reason :P --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 20:14, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
On a related note, Readem is blocked so he cannot edit his userspace, so telling him to log in and edit it through User:Readem... (you can't know everything, so I'll obviously give you the benefit of the doubt). Also, using the same "editing userspace" template for logged in users who edit another space isn't the best thing to do -- I saw another user's talk which said about Gaile's userpage and "if you are that user, please log in". I think it's best if you don't use one template for every issue and just use manually written messages instead. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ Talk 20:41, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
No I am going to make one for logged in users too dont worry I just have not done it yet, Yes I am aware he was blocked, but I figured that was some random anon; guess not :P --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 20:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Shadowphoenix,

What's your message here about? Nobody in the community wants you to go around trying suss out "potential" policy violations; assume good faith and figure that the edit is probably helpful and meaningful. If the user had a problem with it, that user can bring it up. If that user does complain about the userpage edit, feel free to helpfully point him in the direction of the admin noticeboard.

Tanaric 07:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tanaric :),
Most of the time it is the user just forgeting to log in, that is why I put considered and if you are this user please log in. I always assume good faith, however, I am going to re-word my vandal templates and such to make them sound a little less mean :D lol. Warnings about editing other peoples userspace have been happening for a while now if I can remember right :). All such edits must include an appropriate summary message explaining the edit. If the reason for the edit may not be immediately obvious, add further explanation on that user's talk page (refering to editing others userpages), if I see that they left a summary (or a note on the talk page) I will not send them that little message :). The Admin Noticeboard is not always necessary; it might be someone that has not read GWW:USER and just needs a friendly warning from a user.
Hope that cleared some things up! :o) --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 15:52, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
No, you're missing the point. The absolute last thing a new user needs is a warning on their talk page, regardless of how "friendly" it may be. You're not assuming good faith if you warn the user. Period! I'm not arguing against your intentions here, I'm arguing against your actions. You're not doing a good thing by posting these warnings -- at best, you anger somebody who is legitimately editing his own page, and at worst, you frighten off valuable new editors with policy dogmatism.
GWW:USER does not say that any edit to a user page by editors other than that user must include an edit summary or talk page notice. It says that any edits to a userpage against that user's wishes must include an edit summary or talk page notice. Until User:Makkert complains, the anon in question did nothing wrong, by policy or otherwise.

What's it going to take?

Shadow, in just the past 24 hrs you have been asked by more than one sysop to stop your wiki policing. I also want to point out that your comments here are really not constructive. It's the sysops' job to determine the severity of the offense and subsequent punishment, that's why we choose them. Until the day comes that you have a successful RfA, you should maybe refrain from policing this community, and just be a positive contributor instead.--Go to Wynthyst's Talk page Wynthyst 23:28, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

*Sigh* Wynthyst you are someone who a fully respect on this wiki (and others) and you are one of my best friends in-game. However, if I am not allowed to send out friendly warnings to people that have broke a policy (or came close to), and I am not allowed to voice my opinion then I do not want to be here. I am going to take a break for a couple of days and see what happens afterwards. Until then I am going to be over at GuildWiki if you need to speak to me (wiki wise). Maybe if I shut down my functions (so to speak) everyone can just calm down a bit (including me). I am not the first to do this, but because I do this more than the others I am going to get a stern talking to from people. Administrators are not the only people that have an opinion, I love all of our admins but I speak the truth when I say that. So I'm going to take a bit of a break from Guild Wars Wiki. I will see you guys in a few days. Bye :D (don't touch my waffles while im gone :P) --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 00:11, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Is not really that you can not or should not. There is a fine line between moderating and being overzealous, and we all cross it from time on time, but you just end doing it too frequently at times :).
I would advice you to take some time and read Eloc's past RfAs and RfBs, since most of the things told to him on his time could be applied to your case somehow.--Fighterdoken 00:19, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Like Fighterdoken says, it's not that you aren't allowed to, but the simple fact is that several of the admins have asked you politely to back off from your warnings and disengage yourself from debates over violations. This statement "if I am not allowed to send out friendly warnings to people that have broke a policy (or came close to), and I am not allowed to voice my opinion then I do not want to be here" really bothers me. These are not good reasons to be here in the first place. You should be here because you care about the documentation of the game (the ultimate purpose of this wiki), and want to be a positive, contributing editor to this community. If all you want to be is a wiki cop, this isn't the place for you.--Go to Wynthyst's Talk page Wynthyst 02:47, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I know I said I am not going to post here for a few days (which after this I am not) but I feel I must respond. I am not here to be a wiki cop am I here to help contribute to this wiki. I will not stand by and let something go on, without me saying something about it, if I think it is unjust. In Ryudo's case I feel a 3 day block is unjust, so I said something about it; and I did not like you saying it was unconstructive. Brains stated I was trying to enforce policy, how is that even possible; I do not have the power to enforce policy. I cannot block, delete, or protect. Every single time I did what I did, I was warning people so that I could prevent them from getting blocked for something that may have been a mistake, or they were not aware of our wikis policies. Honestly, seeing an innocent user get blocked discust me to a very large extent. If me trying to prevent that is wrong, then this is the wrong place for me. In all of those edits good faith was assumed and that was the point of me giving them a warning. If I did not assume goodfaith, I would have just reported them on the admin noticeboard; but I did not because it could have been a mistake or someone not knowing our policies. I always assume good faith, and always will; the posts by some of the admins suggesting I am not, makes me feel as if that admins think only they should do that. Now, this post tells my feelings toward the situation completely and truthfully; I hope that I do not get publicly slaughtered for speaking my mind. I would feel very greatful if no one brought this up in-game or on the other wikis. Thank You --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 03:59, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I would have to say, as an impartial viewer, this wiki honestly is not the right place for you. You want to contribute, that much is obvious; however, your methods and your understanding of the community are too far off to do that effectively.
You don't have to be able to block to be a backseat sysop. Going around for every other block and saying "IMO THAT WAS TOO LONG" is commentary that, frankly, nobody cares about. If you feel the sysop is a problem, open a reconfirmation. If you just want to rant, that sysop's talk page is the wrong place for it. You are perfectly entitled to make a userspace page with your daily rant, but bugging other people about it is going too far.
You have a definite sense of right and wrong. Unfortunately, you're usually wrong about which user is innocent or guilty. Ryudo wasn't "innocent," and after having been warned by users and sysops about trolling or whatever, he's basically vandalizing by continuing to post in that manner. Blocking Ryudo for a perceived disruption of the wiki was well within Tanetris' powers. -Auron 04:20, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
(Edit conflict)
Again, you've missed the point. The admins, and, indeed, the entire wiki assumed good faith on the parts of those anonymous users by not saying anything. If you assume good faith, there's nothing to warn anybody about. Posting on the noticeboard is not a failure to assume good faith -- it's merely giving the sysops a heads up that something might be going on. Any sysop would have ignored such a posting, because they would have assumed good faith! The only way you can fail to assume good faith is by warning the user that he's doing something wrong. The sentence, "In all of those edits good faith was assumed and that was the point of me giving them a warning.", is inherently self-contradictory.
I apologize for the overuse of bold, but at this point, after repeated misunderstandings on your part, I feel the need to highlight every point to make it easier to understand.

Been here before

Hey- I know what its like to be beaten down, I've been there myself. I've also tried leaving the wiki, but it always manages to bring me back. I've enjoyed your user page and all that it and its subpages have to offer. I hope you come back. PS- I don't think the sysops like being challenged on anything, but thats between you and me. I've just given up caring about it. Too much else to do. Anyways, hope to see you around soon. -elviondale (tahlk) 04:32, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah they dont because in their opinion they are above the rest of us, hopefully something will change here. --Shadowphoenix User-Shadowphoenix Shadow Phoenix Signet.jpg 04:36, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
If you're going to emoquit, please do it decisively. —Tanaric 04:37, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
oh, give the kid a break. she's gone through enough bashing as it is. and frankly, I don't really see why. Any user can issue warnings to other users. Heck, I'm starting to go a bit overboard with it as well. but its our job, isnt it? Shadowphoenix and her "backseat sysopping" actually stopped several vandalizing IP's. would it be better if she just left them alone, afraid to do anything in fear of retribution? I think not.
hookay, rant over. My apologies. But even so, I see nothing wrong done here. --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 04:42, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
That's just it, nobody's bashed her. We've provided instructions, we've offered to help teach, and we get snubbed and ignorantly refused along every turn. If you're unwilling to let us teach you how to do what you want in a way that's acceptable to the community, then, please, just go and stop adding unnecessary drama to the wiki. —Tanaric 04:48, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
....I have no comment. perhaps I'm just seeing the wrong side of this. but even so, I think its just a bit much. I apologize for that, I'll try to tone my arguments down a bit. --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 04:49, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I apologize too, I got a little coarse. It bothers me when users think they're the only ones well-intentioned. Literally everybody who's posted on this page has done so because they're well-intentioned and want the best for the wiki as a whole. A lot of us have a lot more experience at this sort of thing than Shadowphoenix might, and that's why we instruct in this manner -- especially when she's shown herself to be a bit rash and emotional, as she herself admitted when pulling out of the bureaucrat election. Implications that we're powerhungry or otherwise corrupt are a slap in the face. I paid in hard-earned money to help fund the GuildWiki, and I continually lose money by donating time to this. The only reason I bothered posting on this page in the first place is because I don't like to see any contributor or potential contributor leave. —Tanaric 05:04, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Your method of teaching her is no more acceptable than hers. Perhaps you should stop doing it too. --Rezyk 05:24, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Tanaric, stop. You have already helped to drive her off this wiki, don't you think that is enough? Just leave her alone. I would suggest that you do not further this discussion, it can only hurt more than help, you know. --Myria83 05:28, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Sure. I'm done. Have fun. —Tanaric 05:32, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
So does a blanket statement accusing sysops of believing our opinions are above regular users. It's strange to find it unfriendly and insulting when one is being told what others find wrong, yet not unfriendly and not insulting when one is telling others what one finds wrong. *shrugs* -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 05:38, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Look. This entire thread of discussion has gone nowhere but down, causing distress for many involved. I think any actual necessary expression of feelings has been made by this point, and I think that it would be better for everyone here to just take a breather for a little while. So may I kindly suggest that everyone simply refrain from posting here for a bit. I'm sure someone can find something here they want to respond to, but just restrain yourself for now. Everyone will be better off for it. Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 05:52, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

yet another user? Who did i mess up, i wanna at least know. and no i really wont, cuz this is really stupid. "Oh the users arent nice because they dont really want me to be bcrat." "Auron gets away with things" are really bad reasons to emoquit a wiki. Am i supposed to feel bad?
