“Shouts are skills that take effect instantly and affect all allies or enemies within earshot. [sic] Earshot is roughly equal to the "danger zone" represented by the white circle on your compass.
— Farisah, Expert Paragon
Skill type. Shouts have no activation time; they can be used during the activation of another skill or when knocked down. Multiple shouts of different types can be active at the same time. Most shouts belong to the Paragon and Warrior professions, although there are a few Ranger and title-based shouts.
Untargeted shouts affect allies, animal companions, party members or foes within earshot, unless the skill description specifies another range or area of effect.
Targeted shouts have spell range by default. Unlike with most other skills, if the target is not within range, the character will not try to get closer to use the skill, and the skill will simply not activate, showing a "Target is out of range" warning.
Shouts that have their skill name in quotation marks will generate a speech balloon above the user's head when activated (but it will not appear in the chat window). All players will be able to read those speech balloons, including other allies and foes that belong to other parties.
