Hello. If you need to get ahold of me, please leave a message in a new section. If, for some odd reason, you need to get ahold of me faster, or just don't feel like leaving a message, you can also e-mail me, and I'll get back to you fairly quickly. I'm also often available in-game (unless I'm in a GvG), with a user name of (big surprise!) Mister Pepe.

Please leave any comments not related to a previous topic in a new section, preferably with as strange of a section title as possible. Some of my favorites: "Raptors!," "How do you sink a ship?," "Doh!," and "Nyah, nyah." It makes seeing these things pop up on the Recentchanges log far more amusing.

Dumb question?[edit]

Hi MisterPepe, I have a very simple minded question to ask you. I recently have discovered a few collector NPCs that weren't listed in the Wiki, and so I figured I would make a complete page for each one of them. Now it may be because of a lack of attention, but I did not find out how to create a new page. I've corrected pages that already existed in the past, but I've never made one by myself, and I would like to do so, in order to help the GWW community. Could you please inform me about how it is done as soon as possible? Thanks a lot. --Evergreen 16:21, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

=) Well, to make a page, you just have to navigate to the place where the page should be - so, for example, searching for the collector "Lorem Ipsum" would bring up a blank page, because there's no such page (with editing links at the top). You can also link to it [[Lorem Ipsum]] and you'll get a red link - clicking the link brings up the editing page. There's also the option of editing the URL at the top of the page - you end up making something like http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/PAGENAME, which'll also bring up that editing page.
To start a collector page (content-wise), I'd recommend just copy-pasting the template from Guild Wars Wiki:Formatting/NPCs, because that'll make life much easier ;)
Hope that helps! MisterPepe talk 16:40, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I think I am going to improve the collectors section quite a lot, starting by the collectors of Tyria! --Evergreen 16:52, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Images[edit]

So you can only upload images which are free or all rights by owner, is the rule? IE one can't upload an image where the "owner retains rights to said image" but one can if it is "free of ownership" or what-not, outside of Guild Wars?

Technically, everything that we upload to the wiki is automatically licensed as GFDL (with a couple small exceptions, see Guild Wars Wiki:Copyrights). But really, the way it works, is that any images that don't belong to ArenaNet really need to be able to be licensed under the GFDL (so, for example, something released under the CC at-nc-sa license can't be uploaded here). It's been somewhat of a pain when coming up with icons, but it's not that bad.
Short answer: Public domain and images with a license that is compatible with GFDL 1.2+ are okay, everything else is a copyright violation (once again, excepting ArenaNet's images - those stay copyrighted to them). MisterPepe talk 05:07, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Ahh, many thanks. I figure it's lucky the playerbase is so huge as to contain some people that are able to make impressive icons of their own that I see around the wiki. --Talonz 05:27, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, LordBiro is the one that made a lot of our icons (including all the awesome profession icons). =) Copyrights are complicated... MisterPepe talk 05:33, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Bot[edit]

How would I go about getting a bot like you have?--§ Eloc § 04:50, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

In what sense? I've got two different bot programs/frameworks that I use, and a small library full of scripts. Or are you talking about the bot account? MisterPepe talk 04:51, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, reread that and I came out a little more snarky than intended. Let's see if I can come up with a better response for you:
  • The bot account I use, User:PepeGoesWikibotting was granted bot status by a BCrat. They're the only ones that can assign user rights, and it's an important thing to have on a bot account to avoid flooding recentchanges. To get this, you need to have a good reason/project in mind for the bot account - otherwise, you could just pop up a request at GWW:BOTS.
  • As far as the software that I use, there are a few different options.
    • I mainly use a bot framework that runs python scripts on a large number of wiki articles.
    • I've also been known to use an automated browser (WP:AWB) for some tasks.
Mind elaborating a bit on what you were hoping to do with the bot? I probably give a bit better advice if I know what you're trying to do... MisterPepe talk 05:00, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, I sometimes do repetative tasks here on GWW which can get quite annoying to do over and over and over. These things include articles and sometimes even my own userpage. Was wondering if bots are allowed to be used for that, as long as they aren't vandalizing of course.--§ Eloc § 08:33, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
For smaller actions I would suggest you to use AWB. It's easy to use and you don't need to register a bot account. poke | talk 08:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
(edit) For example I used AWB for changing all Skill bar templates to the new one (my contribs). It was a simple search & replace task. poke | talk 08:56, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, AWB is teh r0xx0rs. The only drawback of it is making the lists themselves - since the program populates lists from query.php, it doesn't work unless you make the list from a text file =\ Fortunately, that's pretty easy to do. I've got lists made up for all quests, weapons, etc.
The best part is that it's not a full bot, and can thus be run on a non-bot account. It's a fairly good way to get an introduction into the world of wikibots without too much difficulty. MisterPepe talk 21:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
I tried getting the AWB but it says something about the .NET something or other.--§ Eloc § 05:21, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah. The Microsoft .NET framework, it's pretty standard. Since you don't have it, head on over to [7] and get yourself a copy. It's rather useful for quite a lot of programs. MisterPepe talk 05:24, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Your Bot[edit]

I have a page in my Watchlist but when I view it, it still stays it hasn't been viewed by me and says your bot just edited it.--§ Eloc § 06:15, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

What page? MisterPepe talk 16:40, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Talk:Zaishen Elite--§ Eloc § 18:43, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Look at the history: [8]. User:PepeGoesWikibotting hasn't touched that page at all. Bug, perhaps? MisterPepe talk 18:44, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Well he said (Robot: Fixing double redirect) as his reason.--§ Eloc § 18:47, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I suppose you're right. See [9].
The reason it's not updating is probably because you have a redirect page watchlisted. The actual page is talk:Zaishen Elite (quest) - you did the page move yourself. Since you're going to the redirect page, it sends you over to the target, possibly without updating your watchlist.
Hell, I don't know. That's my best guess, at least =\ MisterPepe talk 18:52, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
And... it looks like Kurd's gotten rid of the redirect. Joy.
Anyway, just as a side note, the double redirect thing is one of the scripts that I run daily (the other two are TouchBotting Guild articles needing cleanup and Candidates for deletion - just to update categories on them). MisterPepe talk 18:58, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh ok. I still need to update my .NET thingy for that browser thingy.--§ Eloc § 21:47, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
TouchBotting? oO --SnogratUser Snograt signature.png 07:29, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
I must add that I just read the blurb on your bot's page, but TouchBotting just brings images of, er, shall we say "bottom-touching?" Lol - sorry, just got home from work; nightshift does weird things to one's brain :D --SnogratUser Snograt signature.png 07:33, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
That's why I've been calling it "Herbert" instead of "TouchBot" =P MisterPepe talk 17:31, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Tabula Rasa[edit]

Damn, the scenery from the screenshots looks just like Guild Wars... the only difference being those laser weapons of course. And quite a striking resemblance between SC2 Colossus and TR Stalker. Oh, and that's definitely not the teletubby green hills WinXP background. :) -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 23:22, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

=P Quite. And yeah, the game is quite sexy - one of the advantages of being in a mega-guild (XoO) is guild beta invites.
I'm currently testing Fury and Tabula Rasa, and I've got my beta key for Pirates of the Burning Sea. I've having some fun there ;) MisterPepe talk 23:26, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
You, sir, have probably too much time on your hands! ;) Btw, "guild beta invites"? Care to elaborate on that a bit more? Like XoO is invited because it is such a huge 'guild', or you getting a beta key because you know someone in XoO who can give them away? -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 23:29, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Like, XoO is so big and well-known that developers come to us an offer us a limited number of beta invites to distribute amongst ourselves (which are either distributed first-come-first-serve or to decent PvP players). Heck, we even have some game devs that watch our forums and post occasionally =P
Of course, XoO is freaking gigantic. I mean, we've got divisions for GuildWars, RFO, WCIII, DII LoD, so many WoW players that we had to make two divisions on different servers, Shadowrun, BF2142, Planetside (where XoO started, actually), LotRO.
That's not counting the beta games ;) (Fury, Huxley, Tabula Rasa, Warhammer Online, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Age of Conan, and there's already a SCII division formed =P)
As I said, it's bloody large ^^ MisterPepe talk 23:37, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I knew it was large, but I think I still didn't grasp HOW large. :) Nice though, to be able to receive those beta invites that way. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 23:40, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Bot programs[edit]

You mentioned back in Guild Wars Wiki talk:Bots that some bots won't work without the bot flag. Can you point me to some examples? --Rezyk 21:45, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I've looked into it a bit more since then. Anyway, here's what I've found out:
  • AWB is a semi-bot. It's also capable of detecting if it's being run on a bot-flagged account and shifting into a fully automated mode, which won't work otherwise. That's part of why I said it was a good introduction to botting in general - it's got the capability to expand once people get used to it. Well, that and the GUI =P
  • I used to think that the pywikipedia framework required a bot flag - apparently this is not the case. However, this one makes edits far faster than AWB can, and really shouldn't ever be run on a non-bot accounts.
  • The Perlwikipedia framework seems not to require it either. Nor do .NET framework, or the JAVA framework, AFAIK.
  • In order of difficulty of use/setup/configuration, I'd rank them AWB, Pywikipedia, and then all of the others (Pywikipedia comes with some pre-written scripts). I inferred (wrongly) from using AWB's full bot mode that other frameworks would require it as well
Oh, and all of the programs require that you be logged in, so we don't really have to worry about anon bots (except spammers =\)
Basically, it seems that (aside from AWB) a full bot doesn't require a bot account to run, but it should probably have it anyway.
On a somewhat related note, I figured out how to override the rate limits on the Pywikipedia framework - I've been making edits at a speed that's only limited by my ISP =\ Anyway, it might be a good time to look at those rate limits again. Hope that helps somewhat. MisterPepe talk 22:36, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Just a little on the side, regarding AWB, I can't seem to get it to load up anything from this wiki. I gotta login via IE first right? But it just keeps saying I'm not logged on. Mebe I got the url wrong? -- ab.er.rant sig 04:30, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, the configuration is a bit of a pain. Under the "general" tab, go to "User and Project Preferences" and make a custom project with with the URL http://wiki.guildwars.com/. If that's properly set, when you try to start up a run, it'll bring up the IE login screen. Also, since this wiki doesn't have query.php installed, AWB can't auto-populate the lists from a category. You have to make them from a text file (yeah, I know). I've got some fairly complete lists if there's anything you need. Tell me if that doesn't fix it for you =)
And, oh - btw, I'm going to upload a completely new version of AVT today, which'll probably break your installer (you'll have to subst the installer again) =P More details later MisterPepe talk 17:58, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Wrong section Pepe? :P Anyway, thanks, AWB sounds like a pain to use outside of Wikipedia :P Well, if ever I need it, I'll buzz you instead :P -- ab.er.rant sig 18:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I got an edit conflict with myself =\ MisterPepe talk 18:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I guess I'm generally done with hacking in my take on bot policy (everything that I can think of for now, anyways). Let me know what you think. --Rezyk 06:23, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Double Redirect Bot fixing[edit]

Perhaps that botting missed something while fixing the redirects. E.G Map of Cantha used to point to Maps#Cantha (Factions), Maps redirected to Map (that was the double redirect part). New redirect should be Map#Cantha (Factions), but actually is only Map. - MSorglos (talk|contrib) 07:38, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

You did pretty well actually, after verifying all pvp + ss + k + l skills it looks like it only really messed up on Attuned Was Songkai, Draw Conditions, Headbutt, Heal Other, Offering of Spirit, Shadowsong, Spirit Transfer, and Vile Touch, all of which have been fixed. Not sure how to count Resurrection Signet, since it simply didn't touch it... ;)
I'm not processing any of the monster only skills so I didn't check 'em... Cloud 07:55, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm... Juuju (sp?) and rollerbeetle skills haven't been changed either, how do you get a list of all skill articles? Perhaps everything in the general namespace that uses the Skill infobox template? In any case you've done your job, thanks :) Cloud 08:24, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Great job Pepe, how did you end up fixing the bot? -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 10:41, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, I used a simplified regex (which worked). The only problem was the false positives, so I semi-botted (to avoid as many mistakes as possible). That's right, I manually approved each one of those 1.2k edits (and had to fix probably 300-400 of them as I went along). =P
I made that skill list from User:Skuld/Skills list and added all of the sunspear/kurzy skills. I simply forgot to include rollerbeetle/those big worm things =\ MisterPepe talk 18:59, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Hiya Pepe! I just wanted to get your attention and point you in this direction. Check it out when you get a chance, and let me know if you have any questions! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:40, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Help Wanted[edit]

Heya Pepe, I'm in the process of setting up a wiki to use as a teaching tool for a class I'm going to be teaching starting in a few weeks. I'd really appreciate your help in setting up some basic help pages. --Go to Wynthyst's Talk page Wynthyst 22:16, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

RfC[edit]

Greetings. I have started a request for confirmation discussion on the RfA page regarding your status as sysop. This is just the first step (which could pretty much end in nothing changing), but your input would be appreciated.--Fighterdoken 18:20, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Copyvio[edit]

Just a note to say that one of your (fairly old) images has been tagged for deletion as a copyvio. Thanks, -- User indochine dsk tree.png Indochine talk 17:37, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Sysop rights cleanup[edit]

Hello, I appreciate you've been inactive for a fair while, but on the odd chance you've still got your talk page watchlisted/notifications enabled, I thought out of courtesy I would leave a message (admittedly I'm going to copy-paste the same message for all affected users). (1) We're going through a bit of a review of which inactive users have sysop rights (including reconfirmation), and (2) here's a link to yours: Guild Wars Wiki:Requests for adminship/MisterPepe. -Chieftain Alex 19:02, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
