[edit] weapon render project

you may want to check this out :) Fall 18:10, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Nice. I'll try to provide an overview of the shared models. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 18:38, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Moving

When moving, remember to "move" talk pages so they drag the history around. There is this whole "attribution" discussion somewhere else, so it's better doing it now than leaving it for others to do it anyways.--Fighterdoken 22:16, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Trophy images

Heya, I was noticing there are several trophies listed in the Image Needed category. I have most all of them in inventory, but I don't know how to extract them using textmod, and not sure I can identify them all in the DAT. If you'd like me to show them to you, and get them cleaned out of Image Needed, I'd be happy to help.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 11:11, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Sure. Tell me on the wiki or ingame when you get the time for doing it. Btw, which trophies actually? —ZerphatalkThe Improver 15:39, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hand Axe

Could you explain what is required for Hand Axe and Hand Axe (Canthan)? Tagging with G4 isn't exactly helpful on what's being attempted. Which is needed to be moved where? And if the the redirect is to be retained, the move isn't really necessary. -- ab.er.rant 16:03, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

d'oh, i actually alrady wrote an answer and thought i saved it, but seemingly i didn't. Well, the last comment was a bit mixed up anyways, so i'll try to answer in catchwords tis time:

[edit] Rhino's Sloth

do you have any info on this hammer? Fall 16:05, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Not more than you :) I only once noticed that name on the Hammer article. I didn't even know the taiwanese promotional items until i searched the wiki for "Rhino's Sloth" now :P —ZerphatalkThe Improver 17:02, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Spear Mastery unique items and Category:Unique spears

Theres been a problem lately with the double unique tags on certian weapon articles. (an example of this can be found here.) I'm wondering about spears in particular, because they both are listed in the above categories. But doesnt it seem a bit redundant to have unique spears and spear mastery unique items as different categories? I'm thinking we need to choose whether to keep one or the other. Any thoughts? -- Wandering Traveler 04:23, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, this double "unique"-tag issue, and the "doubled" category for unique spears are two different things, aren't they?
Regarding the doubled tag-issue, i already noticed it and changed a bunch of them, though i'm not certainly sure whether that was a good idea (similar to Vorith)
But i agree with you, one of these two spear categories are redundant and could be tagged for deletition. I noticed that the same applies to every other weapon type. I suppose they were made as there's a difference in those categories where one weapon can have multiple attributes: Shields, Foci, Wands and Staves. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 14:35, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't think they're two different things. I remember trying to fix the unique spears category by readding the redundant Unique tag. It wasnt the greatest thing I could have done, but it fixed that category for the time being. After checking over some of the other Unique categories, it seems that one unique led to one category, while the other lead to another unique category. (example being Category:Unique bows and Category:Unique recurve bows. Removing one unique tag removed it from the former, but it was still in the latter category. I hope that made sense, my mind is not at its prime atm >.< -- Wandering Traveler 14:46, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh right, they both have to do with the {{Weapon infobox}}. :P It's likely coded in a way that only certain descriptions of the parameters will cause an auto-categorization. The main problem is likely that this template is a bit mixed up atm... —ZerphatalkThe Improver 15:03, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Great, so the only fix is to change around the entire template? o.O -- Wandering Traveler 15:14, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Either that, or everything else that uses this template. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 17:59, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Methinks Wikichu will like that kind of project.... -- Wandering Traveler 18:18, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

I need help working on my new userbox. the code is all here and examples are here. I cant figure out how to let the userboxes be {{any-color}} by just putting a 2 or no. They just stay in there specialty colored forms. and i need to fix the witches hat dilemma since it has 2 forms xD.— Seru Talk 19:51, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Heya

I know way back when we talked about needing a category tree for the Images, well, I've done this The red ones are ones I think need to be added for consistency. I did the same for the Guild namespace categories, so I figured I'd do this one too. If you think it's worthwhile to keep (which I definitely do) I will move it to someplace more appropriate than my sandbox.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 15:43, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Could you add cinematic under screenshots as well? — Seru Talk 15:46, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
This is the category tree of the primary images category. If you wish to add a subcategory to it, you just need to, you don't seem to have a problem adding a gazillion categories for userboxes. There is no reason to ask me, I'm just documenting what is there, and sharing it with Zerpha, since he's so heavily involved with the images.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 15:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't add a category for every userbox :). — Seru Talk 15:54, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, for those you do, you need to add them as subcategories of Category:Users :P --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:01, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
You want me to do that for all the userbox categories? Since im addicted to userboxes <3Seru Talk 16:04, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
It would help to clean up the overall category tree, so sure, if you wish to take it on, go for it :D--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:06, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
(Edit conflict x4) :P That's a great table, well done :) I also like seru's idea. It could become a sub-category of the screenshots like the loading screens. Btw, as you double-tagged "unique <item type> image"-categories, could you possibly also put some of the map images into the screenshot category? The problem here is that some of them aren't screenshots...(e.g. gw.dat extracts, or TyriaMap2.jpg) Oh, and you accidentally added the icon galleries twice. :P —ZerphatalkThe Improver 16:14, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
whoops... icon galleries <--> item galleriesZerphatalkThe Improver 16:16, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
As I told Seru, I simply documented the current category structure, so the Unique weapons categories show up twice because they are not only in the Unique weapons, but also subcategorized under each weapon category. I'm hoping that seeing it in a structured format might help to clean it up, and also to give people a better idea of how to categorize things. I'm also looking into the mediawiki extension for category trees, thinking it might prove useful in cleaning up and maintaining all the categories we have. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:39, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
alright —ZerphatalkThe Improver 16:42, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Also, the icon galleries are not technically galleries, so I believe they are miscategorized, but my brain is starting to spin.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:44, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, the icon "galleries" currently always show the according icon sub-categories which include / show the images. It's at some parts a bit stupid as these categories both include subcategories and icons (those which don't have a subcategory), e.g. Category:Skill tome icons. The actual reason for this was that i couldn't find a good name for the "regular" tomes here tbh :P —ZerphatalkThe Improver 16:48, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I understand, I'm just saying that there is a difference between the categories that actually have gallery pages i.e. the weapons galleries, and the categories that just contain images that due to the way media wiki works, display as galleries.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:53, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah i know what you mean. For this reason i also wondered about these "galleries" ât first when you created them. my previous comment was rather redundant, huh? :P —ZerphatalkThe Improver 16:57, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok, so I just realized I completely missed the subcategories of Category:Inventory icons and have gone in and added them. I'm thinking that the stuff in Category:Icon galleries needs to be in Category:Inventory icons only, and not in the galleries category, unless there are actual gallery pages created.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 17:37, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, i also think so. The galleries should better be created like the weapon galleries: Normal page named "Gallery of <inventory item type>". —ZerphatalkThe Improver 11:56, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] German wiki - ideas borrowing

So like, somehow one day, I managed to stumble upon the article for the Tormented Staff on the German wiki and thought how really cool and awesome it would be to also have animated gifs here and also liked how the icons were implemented on a weapons page. I figured maybe I should tentatively ask you if you could ask if some of those could be added here, maybe also ask Flece nicely if we could host more of their lovely pics? :P Jennalee 14:40, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

The licensing will prohibit copying of content there to here, unless you manage to get the contributors themselves to declare their contributions to be licensed under GFDL. -- ab.er.rant 15:08, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
The screenshots are under ArenaNet copyright (not GFDL/CC-by-nc-sa), surely? Asking them for those images would only be a nicety rather than a necessity if that's the case. -- Brains12 \ talk 15:16, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
People with low RAM are gonna hate us if we do this and/or skill sounds. Calor Talk 13:36, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Gifs are only slow when you are still loading them, there isn't much to do inside of the RAM to display a gif.. Also I suggest we make animation links as we did before, so they don't load always when you go on that page. poke | talk 20:10, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, all gifs in Category:ArenaNet video sequences are not directly imbedded into the pages, right? But getting the images at first could be the bigger problem. I'm not sure whether we are allowed to do this...it's property of arenanet, but isn't the animation still the german wiki's contributor's work, though? I can remember that they weren't pleased about the idea of leaving the images rendered by them to GWW, as they argued they wouldn't be taken seriously by us.
Jennalee: i also like how they included the icon in their infoboxes, yet our design is slightly different and uses smaller screenshots, thus not always leaving enough space for icons on the right next to the text. Yet i know where we could place them: As they have transperent background, putting them into right upper edge of the infobox should look nice. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 09:28, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
problem is, that screws up the wiki tools on the left and shrinks the navigation at the top--Sum Mesmer GuyTalk to me NOW!! DO IT! contribs 10:11, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
That is just because Zerpha failed a bit :P (fixed) poke | talk 11:16, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
I was thinking you could have them at the bottom of the infobox, where say, a map would go, with a white background and the same orange border. Still, no way you could implement the icons in the navboxes? Don't they resize to a certain extent? I mean, your tonics navbox has the icons in a miniature format. Maybe half the size would work. i changed em all to 32pxSeru Talk 14:29, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
No, 64px is standard. Two rows? Calor Talk 16:07, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Nevermind, it looks fine on one row at 64px. Calor Talk 16:12, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
That nav in this section has them all at 32px — Seru Talk 17:24, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
64px made them take up too much space :\ at least to me it looked that way. — Seru Talk 17:25, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
It was less than the width of the page, so it should be fine unless your resolution is less than (roughly) 1200 x 700. Calor Talk 17:30, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Just because it fits doesnt mean it seems bulky. Notice that all other navs only user 19px images in front of the names — Seru Talk 17:32, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually, at full size, it need to scroll sideways if you set a low res. Even at 32px, it might still need to tho.
Soo... Icons on weapon pages, maybe try at the bottom a la polymock pieces? I could forsee then to the side of infos also if you let the image in the preview box be larger by default, say 250px. A lot of people seem to like making them bigger anyway. You would probably have to format all campaigns in a box and attributes by making them go down in columns by spacing them with breaks though. No chance of animated gifs from emily? <_<... I know piling on workload is bad but good animation showing has been sorely lacking, mostly bad youtube vids. Jennalee 22:03, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
I would like to throw my opinion in here, figure better late than never, but I really like the way the icons are used in the nav bars on the German wiki. I think it would be a good thing to incorporate on GWW. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 11:19, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Another unrelated note on nav bars, sometimes they link items only similar in name but aren't part of a "set" stylistically - eg. Runic weapons Jennalee 12:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
On animations from Emily: not at the moment; She will work first on the skill sounds project (and renderings of course).
On infobox changes: Maybe suggest that on the formatting page? poke | talk 20:14, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Zerpha's talkpage is more fun :p Jennalee 08:03, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm a bit out of order here I know, but meh, @Calor, my understanding was we try to optimize to 1024 x 768 which would make 64 too big, but I see no problem in making them smaller, the 'standard' upload size for them is 64, but that doesn't mean they have to be used at that size.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 01:47, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
I like the size they're at on this page (32px) — Seru Talk 01:49, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Here are some comparisons. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 01:59, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
48px looks best imo, though 32px would also be nice if the navbar should be kept as small as possible. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 07:54, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Its screwing up somewhere. Its completely messing up the wiki page...I'll tinker around in my sandbox and see if there is a solution. -- Wandering Traveler 03:11, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I think its the color codign in some of the userboxes. They used a #xxx format. That might be killing firefox o.O— Seru Talk 03:14, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Nope. I think I foudn the solution. Hang on, let me fix it up in my sandbox. -- Wandering Traveler 03:17, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I checked your sandbox the version i saw still didnt fix it :\ I think one of those userboxes doesnt like being in the grid. — Seru Talk 03:43, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Huh, it looks just fine on opera :/. Ah well, worth a shot. -- Wandering Traveler 03:46, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I have no idea what it is. I think it might just be the #xxx color coding. :\ Its really bothering me tho since i only saw that bad of a total page destroying code once b4. — Seru Talk 03:53, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
It's also showing up fine in K-Meleon, IE6 and IE7. -- Gordon Ecker 04:49, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Correction, it pushes down navigation, support, search and toolbox in IE7. -- Gordon Ecker 04:51, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah look at it now. Wandering didn't have all the right code — Seru Talk 04:53, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
yes, that's weird. In IE7 the navigation on these two pages is placed beneath the categories for some reason, yet in ff it looks alright. I noticed that it only gets mixed up when you close the table, otherwise without {| there aren't any problems...but one of these boxes has to be responsible for this, though: My userpage for example is made up in the same way, but as soon as i add your userboxes from Wandering's sandbox, it's also mixed up. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 08:43, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
hmmm i made a bit trial and error and found out that {{User Kurzick2}} and {{User GvG}} are the troublemakers. Lookie, no problems without them... —ZerphatalkThe Improver 08:57, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I did the same and came uop with the same conclusion. Do no add extra divs to userbox templates. I removed them, and now it works. :) One had an open div style=float, which is a BIG nono :P - anja talk 09:02, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
