Yours and my existence may not change the world, Omaiah, but we at the very least are capable of helping people—and helping is all that matters.

— Ace of Balthazar

The Acolytes of Balthazar are a small, diverse, and powerful team of individuals that share a single, divine purpose: to serve as the ultimate vessels of Balthazar's holy judgement, and to disperse His justice in every corner of the world wherever seen fit.

Led by the renowned Ace of Balthazar, a giant warrior gifted with a fragment of the War-God's scorching power and overwhelming hammer abilities, the Acolytes of Balthazar are responsible for the outcome of countless great battles across the world. After the disbanding of their mother guild, N Generation, the Acolytes of Balthazar sought missions to continue challenging the wicked, facing evil that masked itself as flaming Titans, demonized soldiers, and—once, even—a God of Darkness itself.

N Generation

The Acolytes of Balthazar originated as a faction within the N Generation guild, more commonly dubbed the 'Divine Alliance' or the 'Lords of Light', where they battled alongside the mightiest teams ever formed in all of the world's history.

Second Summoners

A group once widely known as the most elite spellcasters across the globe, the Second Summoners prided themselves in their ability to master high-level magics once thought outside the realm of human capability. In their prime their missions were spearheaded by Orios Pak, regarded as the wisest leader in the history of the faction's leadership, and the only known human capable of summoning large and powerful beasts unlike anyone had ever seen. Even while led by Orios Pak the Second Summoners never permitted more than a dozen members into their ranks, which some would claim had a hand in the faction's strange and untimely disappearance many years ago.

Holy Guard

The Holy Guard faction was the second-largest faction within N Generation, with approximately forty holy-magic scythe masters in its formidable army. Although their was no distinguished commander among them, every two years all the members would gather to appoint three members as the 'Voices of the Guard'. Only the bravest, cleverest, and most righteous among the Holy Guard could receive such an honor, which permitted them to speak on behalf of their brethren at any council meetings. Many from the Knights of the Wing found them to be a little strange, as it appeared every time a member of the Holy Guard was killed or disabled from combat, they were always replaced by another soldier within days--keeping them at approximately forty members. This was exceptionally odd because no one in the guild knew of their recruitment methods, even the heads of the other factions. Even stranger, around the time they had left with the Second Summoners on a quest and mysteriously vanished, not a single soul had come to replace them.

Knights of the Wing

The main bulk of the N Generation alliance's forces consisted of the Knights of the Wing, a legion of armor-clad warriors who strove to master every form of martial weapon combat known to humans. Commanding nearly 50% of the guild's total forces, it was they who were tasked with most of the grunt work when deployed on missions--and as such had the least-respected reputation to those outside the alliance. Although their faction was immensely powerful, they were far too careless when engaging enemy threats and would often exacerbate any delicate situation. However, their leader at the time, Commander Dastion, had no qualms about fully compensating any who had suffered damages from the Knight's actions. Instead, he reveled at the power of his followers, constantly encouraging them to climb to new heights and to never hold themselves back. The Knights of the Wing were the last of the N Generation factions to disband following the disappearance of the Second Summoners and the Holy Guard, as Commander Dastion was regrettably slain in combat shortly thereafter. Dispersing to every corner of the world immediately after, his warriors decided on a new mission to help the world wherever they could.

Recruitment

Unfortunately, recruitment into the Acolytes of Balthazar is incredibly rare.

Past Days

In the past, there was not much of a recruitment process for the Acolytes of Balthazar. Originally consisting of only the Ace of Balthazar and his childhood friends, Adria and Jarvis (the remains of his young team after the Searing) the faction was not well-known around the world. Shortly after that, even, the group shrank as Adria met her tragic end alongside Prince Rurik in the Shiverpeak Mountains, in an attempt to buy time for the Ace. However, whenever his are Jarvis' adventures teamed them up with extraordinary people with extraordinary talents, the friendship that was built and the loyalty gained earned their newfound companions a place as a War-God legionary. Omaiah was the first to join the ranks when he and the Ace met in Istan, as he was found to be an undoubtedly trustworthy commander. Dorukan and Karla swiftly accepted the invitation as they were traveling north through Vabbi, as the Necromancer siblings--although their personalities were polar opposites--could be trusted to do anything. It was around this time they met the holy Dervish Drohva, as well, whose time was unfortunately cut short by the dark God Abaddon in their quest to end Nightfall. Cantha graced his journeys with a talented smite healer at Shing Jea Monastery by the name of Kenjiro, coupled with the son of the notorious Crimson Skull Guild's leader--a rebellious, narcissistic, and powerful spirit-master named Shen Yun. It was only when the faction trekked the Northern Shiverpeaks that they discovered Haru, the Windwalker, a swordsman raised by Norn since infancy whose agility was unmatched. Melody was the most recent member to be recruited, showing exceptional talent as a Mesmer during training with the Ebon Vanguard.

Current Days

The Acolytes of Balthazar have not recruited any new members to their ranks in many years, but it has been rumored that those who are still discovering incredible talents within themselves could possibly be visited by an Acolyte in the near future.

You ever get the feeling that we take this Acolyte life a little too seriously? I have a sneakin' suspicion in the end we won't be making it out alive... but don't quote me on that.

Character Lore

Ace of Balthazar

Alayen Dragone was not always the strongest or most gifted Warrior. In fact, during his training before the Searing he was notoriously labeled a failure due to his frail body structure and almost laughable inability to properly wield a sword, even though Prince Rurik believed he held great potential. As a trainee he was teamed up with a promising group of individuals—including Jarvis—although their talent in combat made him feel utterly useless. Being the only Warrior in a party with two Elementalists, a Mesmer, and a Monk forced him to the front lines during their sessions to tank incoming foes, which never ended too well for him. Nevertheless, it served as excellent time for him to get to know their Monk Urijah very well.

Although Rurik himself oversaw particular training drills and monster hunts, the group was led by Zeph Cinderhide—an arrogant but exceptionally keen fire mage—who had brazenly dubbed the group the "Acolytes of Balthazar" in honor of the group's patron god. Although he and Alayen never saw eye-to-eye—mainly due to Alayen's lack of ability—Alayen was rather smitten with his sister, Adria, who was also a powerful fire mage but constantly supported him despite his shortcomings; this, however never sat well with Zeph. On the day of the Searing he lashed out at Alayen in an argument over their relationship, and although he was quickly subdued by Adria and Jarvis, he fled in his anger. Alayen was immediately dragged to Rurik for healing while Urijah, attempting to mediate the dispute and calm Zeph down, traveled north of the wall in search of him just as the events of the Searing occurred. With the death of Zeph and Urijah, the Acolytes of Balthazar were no more.

Following the Searing, the trio decided to travel with Rurik through the mountains towards Kryta seeking refuge near Lion's Arch. Alayen hadn't become any less of a burden during this time, sadly, and was increasingly aware of how much Jarvis and Adria were having to cover him as they continued to fight their way farther north. While attempting to pass through the Frost Gate, however, Alayen's ambitions changed dramatically when Adria chose to sacrifice herself in order to rescue Prince Rurik and buy him and Jarvis more time to escape the Stone Summit. Although their efforts were ultimately successful, Alayen repeatedly blamed himself for being too useless and detrimental to his friends, and chose to journey even farther north from Lion's Arch to better his skills and help create what would eventually be the foundation for the Ebon Vanguard. Jarvis, to his surprise, offered to travel with him, and the two trained with the remnants of the Ascalon Guard until both were sturdy, young soldiers fit to train recruits themselves; Alayen's new aptitude for combat accelerated his results at an alarming rate, but this soon caused issues of pride for his seniors. Upon realizing after a confrontation with a few of them that perhaps his skills were needed elsewhere, he chose to travel to Elona in search of "new possibilities". Jarvis, not to his surprise this time, made the same decision.

It was during his time in Vabbi that his legacy as the War-God's champion began, about the time he and the perceptive Paragon Omaiah were seeking entrance to the Festival of Lyss. A squadron of Ebon Vanguard and Vabbian soldiers had made contact with him just after they'd received their invitation to the event, asking for assistance in the dispatching of an 'unknown threat'--something vaguely suspicious enough to warrant Alayen's curiosity. As Omaiah sought support for the Sunspears from the Princes and with Jarvis delayed by a scouting mission, Alayen marched alone with the Ebon-Vabbi team towards The Mirror of Lyss, and certain death. It was ascertained almost immediately that the 'unknown threat' reported was actually an enraged ghostly former-Champion of Balthazar, who did not hesitate to engage and annihilate Alayen and his entire company out of rage. Even though the one-sided conflict snapped his bones and gouged gaping wounds into his limbs, Alayen continued pointlessly fighting with every ounce of himself that he could muster, as his allies' spirits broke and tried to flee around him, but to no avail. At long last, when his heavily broken body was the only thing attempting to continue struggling against the Champion--whose wrath was subsiding fast--he was unexpectedly blessed with an amused laugh. Even more unexpectedly, it was at this moment the Champion asked why he continued to fight. After a moment, his reply was simple: "I fight so other people don't have to. Even if I die, I know I never gave up."

It wasn't long before Alayen found that his answer was correct, as the words "Precisely, worthy one" stayed in his memories since he was granted the deceased Champion's power--a fragment of Balthazar himself, boosting both his physical and mental attributes to awe-inspiring levels and instilling him with an innate sense of detecting incoming threats, no matter the distance gauged. Returning to Omaiah and Jarvis as a newly crowned Champion of Balthazar--evident by his now seven-foot tall, three-hundred-pound stature--he was then nicknamed the group's 'Ace', and went on to utilize this destructive new power to bring down Abaddon and put an end to Nightfall. It was at this time that Alayen revived his former captain's legacy; with the fall of the dark God, he knew it was time to aptly name his party the "Acolytes of Balthazar".

Ever since, he has only been known to the people as the Ace of Balthazar.
