Technical Notice +
Technical issues update
Since there are a lot of new things to report to you guys, I've written up a big article and posted it on my journal page. Check it out to find out:
If anyone has any comments about these items, please post them on my journal's talk page or on my talk page.
Thanks so much! --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 02:48, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
This page is for reporting bugs that you may encounter in the wiki. This does not cover in-game issues that you may encounter, nor does it cover page contents within individual articles.
  • If you are experiencing an in-game bug or issue that requires technical support, check the Guild Wars support site.
  • If you are experiencing difficulties getting past a specific part of the game, use the "Search" box on the left to find the specific quest, mission, or region that you are finding difficult. You can review any tips on that page, and discuss it on that page's talk page if more help is needed.
  • If you have a problem with contents of a page, use the associated talk page.

Please review existing bug reports before creating a new one. If you add a bug not related to the wiki (such as a bug in the game itself), the report may be removed with no action taken.

When reporting a new bug, be sure to provide a description of the problem, your wiki username, the information from any error message received, and any additional comments that may help someone reproduce and troubleshoot the suspected bug. Also be aware of some common things that will cause problems on the wiki.

[edit] Guild Namespace

The Guild namespace seems to have disappeared, and all the guild pages have been moved to Arena Net namespace.--Wyn's Talk page Wynthyst 20:23, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

And ArenaNet namespace pages moved somewhere else or are just gone. -- Inspired to ____ 20:26, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
We're looking into this right now. Thanks for your patience! --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:29, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Hiya everyone! This issue should now be resolved. Thanks again for the reports, and I apologize for the confusion :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:35, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Wow that was fast, tnx a lot Emily. And give the IT team a cookie ~ KurdImage:User Kurd sig.png 20:37, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
But take it back off them for doing it in the first place :P -- Brains12 \ talk 20:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
We noticed an error with some guild pages which were edited during the time of the bug described above. There are 2 guild pages and 2 guild subpages affected by this: Guild:Guild Of Russian Pathfinders, Guild:The Disciples Of Kashga, Guild:The Disciples Of Kashga/Melanktion Gods and Guild:The Disciples Of Kashga/New Melank. All of them are internally stored in the Main namspace (see also this link). Is it possible to have the IT look this up and fix it directly in the database? We tried different things but we were not able to solve this. Thanks poke | talk 17:50, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Heya Poke! Sure, I'll see if we can resolve this issue for you on our end. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:24, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Hey Emily, any news on this? There are now others realizing this error, so it would be fine if it could be fixed somehow. Thanks :) poke | talk 23:58, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Hiya Poke...I brought this up today, and the team will go in and check it out. So hopefully this will be resolved shortly. Sorry for the wait on it :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:27, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm not going to archive this since it doesn't seem to be done yet. I'll send another email about it and follow-up on it again on Monday. Sorry for the delay :( --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 02:53, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi guys! This should be taken care of. Can you check and make sure that everything is kosher before I archive this? --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Emily, but it doesn't look like it is fixed yet :/ entry 2-4 poke | talk 20:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I suppose that neither I nor my IT contact understand what the problem is. All of the links posted above are in the Guild: namespace. Can you specify what we're looking at again? --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:58, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
It seems as if internally in the database the namespace for those four pages is set to "0" instead of "100" which would equal the guild namespace. So someone would have to get into the database and check the stored values there. Hmm, after checking a bit more I found out that they are indeed stored within the guild namespace, but for some reason they are still to be found using the Allpages special page and setting the namespace to 0 (main namespace). I'm not sure why this happens, but maybe the allpages result is cached. But maybe the IT will find something out about this. The article IDs for the pages in question are 118552, 136636, 136011 and 135596. Thanks for your help! poke | talk 21:04, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I found it out now. In the database there are actually two page entries for each of the said pages, one is stored in the guild namespace and one is stored in the main namespace. The IDs I said before are the ones for the guild namespace which are correct. The redundant ones are 136018, 128417, 130646 and 136009. Those have to be deleted. poke | talk 21:10, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Another related thing when the IT is working their way through the database ;) On GW2W there is still one page which is unaccessible due to the interwiki linking system. You can see the entry (which is found by DPL) here; when clicking the link you are redirected to GWW but the article actually exists with that name on GW2W as well and it would be great to have that page deleted as well. Thank you :) poke | talk 21:14, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Poke! I'll pass that along :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:00, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bug

I got this when I tried to view this page:

Database error
From Guild Wars Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search
A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
(SQL query hidden)
from within function "Job::pop". MySQL returned error "1213: Deadlock found when trying to get lock; try restarting transaction (172.30.129.83)".

--ShadowphoenixPlease, talk to me; I'm so lonely ;-; 00:27, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Workin' for me. Could have just been a hiccup in the system. -- Wandering Traveler 00:31, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
That is what I figured, but wanted to report it anyway just incase. --ShadowphoenixPlease, talk to me; I'm so lonely ;-; 00:36, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tilde in username

We've got one of those problematic urls with tildes in, User:~nymph~ (this works). As it's a user and not just a page, it'll probably need a rename of the account if that's possible, and it may be a good idea to disallow creation of account names with tildes in so it doesn't reoccur. -- Brains12 \ talk 01:28, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

A fix of the mod_rewrite should do it too I think. poke | talk 06:37, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
There are at least seven other users with a tilde in their name, going by the user list. Calor Talk 16:03, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
You looked through the entire list to find them? Or did you just see the ones who may have a tilde at the start of their name? — Eloc
Hi guys...we're currently talking about this exact topic. Right now, we're leaning towards allowing tildes in names (which would fix the current issues) to avoid having to rename people's accounts for them. I'll keep you updated with the final decision when I learn more details. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:51, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Ya, maybe, but it's still good to report them I guess because it says it might indicate a bug in the software. — Eloc 05:59, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Ive been getting several of these errors today, Image:User Fall Wiki Bug.jpg. Fall 19:27, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Recent Changes

I currently notice the recent changes not following up to the changes, plus those changes taking a while to appear. Plus its also close to the problem hour. Dominator Matrix 04:57, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Recently, User talk:NuclearVII/Essays/Questions and no answers didn't update for me for a while after I edited it. It showed up fine in the history and edit tabs. -- Gordon Ecker 06:47, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm also re-experiencing a problem that we had a while ago, with new entries being attributed to a different time. -- Brains12 \ talk 11:48, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I can confirm that, currently the history of Wyn's talk page is messing up, showing comments to a section before the section was created. poke | talk 12:32, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
It looks as if the server time was not correct as the signature timestamps have the wrong time as well. poke | talk 12:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
This may be related to this but yesterday I noticed that the recent changes date/time seemed to be messed up. The line "Below are the last 100 changes in the last 7 days, as of" read 18:52, August 15, 2008 as did the line "Show new changes starting from" but the last edit was from 22:51 (August 15th), if need be I can upload a screenie. --Kakarot Talk 13:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
It seems to be continuing even now. My RC hasnt updated in quite some time. -- Wandering Traveler 16:50, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
On top of that pages (like my userpage) the cache also doesn't get updated until you purge the page. So times are wrong, its not recording, and its not updating. Dominator Matrix 23:29, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
It dosen't seem to be recording reverted information correctly in the history. Fall 21:10, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) It gets better and better all the time, I left these comments at 12:56 (UTC) and as the link shows the first one went back four hours and the second four hours before that. --Kakarot Talk 13:00, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, it's getting worse. Now not only the history thing is cazy, but also the pages themselves are not showing some contributions. Erasculio 09:49, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I've noticed on a few pages the past two days or so. Calor Talk 13:30, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

I sent an email about this to Emily. poke | talk 18:16, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm looking at the history of ArenaNet:Guild Wars suggestions and I see:
  • 22:24, 17 August 2008 Lolsocks (Talk | contribs) (85 bytes) (Replacing page with '#1 suggestion for GW Revert GvG, you've killed the only good thing left in the game.')
  • 22:18, 17 August 2008 M0st want3d (Talk | contribs) (480,427 bytes) (→Xunlai Mini Pet Storage)
  • 18:33, 17 August 2008 Anja Astor (Talk | contribs) m (480,427 bytes) (Reverted edits by Lolsocks (Talk); changed back to last version by M0st want3d)
The order is completely screwed up and I just time out if I try to view a comparison of these changes. Weirdest thing I saw on a wiki in a good while @_@ — Poki#3 Image:User Poki Signature.jpg 17:14, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] History issues since the crash

Since the wiki crashed yesterday, edit histories are not recording correctly, at least, several of my edits do not appear in RC, or in the various page histories. When I purge my cache, the edits appear on the page, but not in the history.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:12, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, duh, this issue goes with the section above. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 10:51, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi guys! I've received word from IT that they've tracked down the source of these problems and they should be resolved. If anyone still notices issues, please let me know. Thanks :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:49, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thumbnail errors

While I've been working on the cinematics pages, I'm getting a relatively high number of thumbnail errors. The image will show up the first time, but if I edit the page again, it errors writing the thumbnail. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 02:31, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

I had a similar problem, when I tried to view the rank 15 emote pic for the HA title. I have a screen here --ShadowphoenixPlease, talk to me; I'm so lonely ;-; 18:21, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Categorising

Category:Elite skills contains User:Spawnlegacy/Swashbuckler/skill/Embrace Elements, a page that has never been categorised as such.

Presumably this has something to do with the page containing an infobox template that would have categorised it as such if it had been in mainspace. Backsword 02:45, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

And this is a bug? Calor Talk 02:47, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
It does? — Eloc 20:00, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
The infobox lists it as an Elite Stance under type. That would put it in Category:Elite skills.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 20:14, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
The page was accidentally in the main namespace before, that is why it was categorized. poke | talk 20:20, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image Cache

Again many files are not updating, this has gone on for many days and affects any new versions of images of this week. A purging and refresh of the image page doesn't help as it just goes back to the old one. Dominator Matrix 23:12, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

I've actually noticed that images being reuploaded update automatically (or just require a quick hard refresh) -- could you give an example of one that hasn't? -- Brains12 \ talk 00:37, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
It would be this one. Though it was uploaded between the backup and DB work. It seems to have finally updated. Dominator Matrix 03:43, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Defy Pain

im not sure where is should put this but i noticed that the skill 'Defy Pain' is not listed as providing damage reduction in the damage reduction article --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:131.151.136.37 (talk).

That's not a bug, the list needs to be updated manually. -- Gordon Ecker 05:28, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Minions

moved to Help:Ask a game question

[edit] Server error disallowing access via index.php on some pages

Example: http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?title=Guild:Sp_Team - redirects to http://www.plaync.com/badInput.html. The server seems to be misconfigured making it impossible (or very hard) for some pages to be viewed or edited. poke | talk 17:58, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Just thought I'd add that it does seem to work if you replace the underscore in the URL with %20 (a space). Might be useful info when diagnosing what's going wrong. Biscuits Image:User Biscuits sig.png 23:40, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks guys! I've passed this along for ya. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 17:57, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
So I received word about this issue, and was told that the reason this is happening is because "sp_" is being blocked because it can be a stored procedure. We've put in a request to have the full guild name excepted, so that change should be made in the near future. In the meantime, I'd continue to use the %20 solution to hit the page. Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done until that exception is made :( Thanks for pointing this out! --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:30, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Heya guys! I'm getting prodded by our IT folks to let you all know that this issue has been fixed. If you run into any other odd cases like this, please let us know :) As always, thanks again! --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:45, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Why can´t I save changes?

moved from ArenaNet talk:Skill feedback/Elementalist

I can edit the article, but as soon as I try to save the changes the site is not found. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:84.56.251.116 (talk).

Possibly due to too much server load. I experienced a similar problem earlier today. -- Gordon Ecker 07:04, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] I can't login

Everytime I try to log in it shows me logged in but when I switch to another page it logs me out. Any ideas? Is it becuase I am on a different IP address (this is not my computer) --67.142.161.28 17:45, 23 September 2008 (UTC) (Shadowphoenix)

Do you have cookies enabled? poke | talk 18:21, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
alternatively you can enable pancakes. - Y0_ich_halt 19:16, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Also, some pages load like that (images for me mostly). Try another page. --TalkAntioch 21:06, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Cookies are enabled, and I added it to IE's list of permitted sites, yet I still can't log in... Somethign to do with the ISP or somethign maybe? --67.142.161.31 21:38, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
My adivse is to download another broswer and see if it will allow you with that. -- Blood contribs 22:03, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
I am using the same browser here as I do at home (IE). I am thinking that this ISP is just awful, I can't even load a single town in Guild Wars here D'=. --67.142.161.34 05:39, 25 September 2008 (UTC) (SP)
Well I am back home and I can login in fine now, must have had something to do with the ISP --ShadowphoenixPlease, talk to me; I'm so lonely ;-; 20:10, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Protecting

Protecting seems to grind the wiki to a halt for a few minutes. For example,

# (Protection log); 01:14 . . Brains12 (Talk | contribs | block) (protected "Guild:Dark Betrayers": bot target [create=autoconfirmed])
# (Deletion log); 01:08 . . Brains12 (Talk | contribs | block) (deleted "Guild:Dark Betrayers": G1: Purely vandalism)

I saved the protection request a few seconds after I deleted the page, but the log shows it was 6 minutes after the deletion, during which the wiki wouldn't load. This slowdown seems to occur whenever a page is protected (though the length of time usually differs), so it's not a one-time thing. -- Brains12 \ talk 00:27, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) Could be not a bug but a feature to make it protected (as you can't allow anyone to edit while getting it protected). Though it shouldn't take that long. Dominator Matrix 00:36, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
I just tested it on another wiki, and it saved perfectly fine; in fact, it's a slower wiki compared to this one, yet the protection request took the same amount of time as any other save would. They're on MediaWiki 1.13.1, but I doubt that would have an effect on the speed of protections. -- Brains12 \ talk 00:45, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
"Could be not a bug but a feature to make it protected" - nice feature that breaks the wiki for multiple minutes... Actually the protection is just a simple value inside of the database that need to be changed, so there is actually no reason why it should take so long. poke | talk 11:58, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi guys...I'll go ahead and pass this along to see if there's some config change on our side that's causing the issue. I'll let you know what I find out. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:13, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GW2W - permissions error

I'll post this here as I'm not sure how much viewing the GW2W bug report page gets -- while blocking a vandal, and reverting/deleting his remnants, I kept getting errors. The rollback errors came with the message:

"You do not have permission to do that, for the following reason:

There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking.
Please hit "back" and reload the page you came from, then try again."

Note: I was using ?bot=1 as described here to prevent the edits from flooding recent changes. I had to re-send some rollbacks and blocks several times in order to get them through, while some worked the first time. (I'm User:Plingggggg on there, by the way.) -- Brains12 \ talk 16:43, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
