Hero armor

Each hero comes with a default armor model unique to the hero. Players may upgrade the hero armor with runes and/or insignias. Players can also update most hero armor to one of two other models; this has no effect on the the hero's armor rating or on the applied upgrades.

Armor rating

A hero's armor rating is solely dependent on their profession and level:

Runes and insignias

Every hero's headpiece comes with an inherent <Item's Attribute + 1> and each piece can be upgraded with any rune or insignia available to the player character. These can be safely salvaged from the hero using an Expert Salvage Kit, since hero armor cannot be removed or broken.

Armor appearance upgrades

Players can upgrade the armor of most heroes by trading in special items found in certain challenge missions in Nightfall and Eye of the North to an appropriate hero armorer. Once upgraded, the armor sets can be swapped at-will by returning to any of the relevant NPCs. Changing a hero's appearance has no effect on the armor rating or on any applied runes or insignias.

You must update the hero's armor before they can be added to the "Fellowship" monument in the Hall of Monuments, except for M.O.X. — the golem only has one armor set and can be added to the monument immediately after acquisition.

Exceptions

You cannot upgrade the appearance of any of the heroes unlocked through Guild Wars Beyond: Keiran Thackeray, Miku, and Zei Ri; these are also the only heroes that cannot be added to the monument. (Although Keiran has two alternate armor sets, they are not yet implemented due to lack of resources for updating the Hall of Monuments.)
