Rin is the official capital of the Kingdom of Ascalon. It is located south of the Nolani Academy. Rin became the capital of Ascalon when Drascir, the former capital, fell into the hands of the Charr.
Since the Searing, Rin lays in ruins while Ascalon City has taken over as the unofficial capital of Ascalon. However, King Adelbern still holds his throne in Rin and organizes the war against the Charr from there.
During the Nolani Academy mission, players find out that Rin is being destroyed by the Charr forces (assault is lead by Bonfaaz Burntfur), and is at the brink of falling into their hands. Prince Rurik is able to see that going head-on into the Charr would be suicide, as their numbers would quickly overwhelm Ascalon's. Using the legendary Stormcaller mouthpiece on the Stormcaller itself, a great rain begins to pour. The Charr's fires are extinguished and their forces weakened. This allows the Ascalonians to reclaim the befallen city of Rin and the king's throne housed within it.
Prince Rurik, seeing Rin - the capital of Ascalon - in ruins, finally gathers up the courage to confront his father, King Adelbern. Rurik tells him the destruction of Rin is final evidence of the need for Ascalonians to flee their ruined kingdom. Adelbern, seeing his son as traitorous, exiles him from the lands of Ascalon as Rurik leaves Rin to take refugees through the Northern Shiverpeaks.
[edit] Notes
- The Ascalon Athenaeum1 was located here.
- Rin is also one of the three destinations to which the Lich Lord sends his army of Titans during the last two missions of the game. However, the actual invasion of Ascalon seems to start from Charr territory in the Eastern Frontier and Dragon's Gullet, during quests The Last Day Dawns and The Titan Source.
